- 81 - #81 - Is Warming Up Worth It?
What if your warmup could be more targeted to your individual nervous system? In this episode, I speak with my trusty podcast producer, Tony, all about the neurology of warming up. I discuss common warmup techniques and analyze them from a neurological perspective to better understand their effectiveness. I also make the case for tools that may not be typically associated with warming up that we can use for a more targeted effect. I discuss warmups for combat sports, strength training, ball-sport athletes, and more. I also talk about how to choose high payoff warmups, the importance of specificity for sport vs targeting higher order neurological systems, how to build buy-in with athletes, instances where warmups can be counterproductive, order of operations for warmups and training in general, sympathetic vs parasympathetic stimuli, autonomic function and performance, training with less tension, breathing exercises, and more.

Fri, 16 Oct 2026 - 79 - #79 - Beyond the Massage Table: Integrating Applied Neurology Into Manual Therapy with Adam Goodrich
What happens when a manual therapist with more than 20 years of hands-on experience starts looking at pain and movement through a neurological lens?
In this episode, Taylor talks withKRUSE ELITE student Adam Goodrich, a licensed massage therapist and physical therapist assistant, about the challenges and wins he’s experienced integrating applied neurology into an established manual therapy practice.
In this episode:
Moving beyond the “table dilemma”— introducing neurological assessments and drills to clients who expect hands-on treatment. Why adding applied neurologydoesn’t mean abandoning the manual skills you’re already good at. How Adam started small with trusted clients and gradually built confidence applying neuro concepts. Real client examples wherevision, sensory input, opposing-joint work and neuro stackingcreated surprising changes in pain, mobility and muscle tone. Whyassessment and reassessmentcan help determine whether both your neuro drillsand your manual techniquesare creating the desired response. How a client’shistory can provide cluesabout which neurological systems and inputs may be worth exploring. Why manual therapists may have a unique advantage—their hands-on skills already provide powerful sensory input that can be viewed through a neurological lens. Why applied neurology is less about learning another protocol and more about developing athinking modelthat can enhance the skills you already have. The big takeaway
You don’t have to know everything about the nervous system before you start applying what you’re learning.
Start small. Test an input. Reassess. Learn from the response.
Over time, applied neurology can give you a new way to understand the manual work you’re already doing—and a much larger toolbox when hands-on treatment alone isn’t creating the change you want.
Thank you to neuro ninja student, Adam Goodrich for sharing your personal and professional journey in learning applied neurology. To work with Adam, check out his practice:

Fri, 03 Jul 2026 - 69 - #69 - Aquatic Training for Recovery and Coordination
What if aquatic training could turbo-charge your recovery? In this episode, I speak with my trusty podcast producer, Tony, all about aquatic training and how I would often use it to aid in recovery, reduce inflammation and improve many facets of movement like strength, coordination, mobility, endurance, and more. I discuss how aquatic training and the Burdenko Method were a formative part of my movement education and outline what makes aquatic training unique from a movement perspective. I also breakdown aquatic training methods from an applied neurology perspective, and discuss how it can improve range of motion and create a more supportive environment for movement after injury, but also how it can adversely affect the vestibular system and create issues in certain situations. I talk about how I would use aquatic training for athletes, as well as some of the programming ideas in the Burdanko method that set it apart. Aquatic training is not your grandmother's water aerobics, and even though I have moved away from it for practical reasons, I encourage everyone to experiment with this modality to this day.

Fri, 15 May 2026 - 64 - #64 - The 8 Levels of Applied Neurology - A Framework for Pain and Mobility Issues
What if you could use a single framework to diagnose your pain and mobility issues? In this episode, I speak with my trusty podcast producer, Tony, about the 8 Levels of Applied Neurology, and how any issue we are trying to solve can be viewed through this framework to better understand, diagnose, and target it at the neurological level. I outline the 8 Levels from the outside-in, following the neuro-anatomy of the body from the receptor level at the skin all the way up the spine and into the brain, and in doing so, show how you can systematically evaluate pain, movement, or mobility issues from a local level on up to higher order systems in the brain. I also use a specific example of a pain and mobility issue and run it through the 8 Levels so you can see exactly how it can be applied and why so many of these issues are complex and touch many different systems in the body. The 8 Levels is a powerful model that integrates all of the topics, tools, and approaches discussed thus far on the podcast into a single framework, and is required listening for the aspiring or practicing movement coach or professional.

Sat, 21 Feb 2026 - 59 - #59 - What is Applied Neurology?
Does the word "neurology" make you think of scientists in white lab coats? In this episode, I bring it back to basics with my trusty podcast producer, Tony, and talk about what applied neurology really is. I define applied neurology as I use it in my practice and what sets it apart from other more clinical neuroscience-based disciplines like functional neurology. I also talk about the growing "nervous system regulation" space and what many are getting right and wrong about applied neurology as the concepts start to become more popular. I talk about some of the core foundations and models underpinning applied neurology such as the input/output loop, the threat bucket, the assessment process, the importance of neuroanatomy, the time-scale of the nervous system, and more. This is a review of fundamental concepts but also a great discussion around how I think about applied neurology and how it fits into the wider conversation around health, fitness, pain, and mobility.

Sat, 14 Feb 2026 - 58 - #58 - How to Change Your Autonomic Function
Do you have clients who never seem to warm up despite your best efforts? In this episode, I speak with my trusty podcast producer, Tony, about the autonomic system and how it relates to pain and mobility. I talk about the involuntary nature of the autonomic system, the relationship between voluntary and involuntary function, how the body will anticipate physical activity, the neuro-anatomy of autonomic function, pain and threat, gait, breathing, blood-pressure, bone-conduction headphones, warm-ups, and more. I also talk about how to determine if someone is having issues with their autonomic system, what tools you can use when making assessments, and different stimuli that can be used to improve autonomic function. While autonomic function may not be under your direct conscious control, there are still a lot of ways to affect your autonomic function for the better to decrease pain and improve health and performance.

Fri, 30 Jan 2026 - 56 - #56 - Setting Goals Around Pain
What if your pain is getting in the way of your health and fitness goals? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, about setting goals around pain. I discuss why calendar-based goals can be a trap, what happens when pain gets in the way of your performance goals, how I think about goal-setting for my own training, how I help my clients achieve their performance goals, setting goals around consistency, how to set neuro-specific goals for yourself, and more. I also talk about the ephemeral nature of pain, why it's better to focus on process rather than outcomes when it comes to pain, how chronic pain differs greatly from other forms of pain, why the salience of performance goals can actually help reduce pain, and why getting benchmarks of your own performance is often a better first step than looking at standards. This is a must-listen if you are setting goals for the New Year.

Fri, 19 Dec 2025 - 54 - #54 - Expanding Your Movement Box
What if your ability to move well is shrinking? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, about the concept of the 'movement box' and why creating a varied movement practice can be the key to a healthy, pain-free lifestyle. I discuss the neurology of movement and how movement can be trained through exposure, what happens when you don't have that exposure to varied movement, and why a lack of varied movement may have other, less obvious side-effects. I give my number one recommendation for the sedentary individual that is looking to improve their ability to move, some of my favorite exercises to add to a regular strength training program, and my thoughts on picking up new physical fitness modalities or sports. I also discuss the concept of "optimal" movement in strength training vs "functional" movement, why I believe lifestyle stress is the greatest contributor to injury, the difference between flexibility and mobility training, the active vs passive gap, why you should treat your training like a practice, why speed of movement matters, and more.

Fri, 21 Nov 2025 - 52 - #52 - Primitive Reflexes Explained: How Early Brain Development Shapes Behavior, Learning & Emotions with Rachel Harrington
Did your child skip some developmental milestones or seem a little behind in hitting them? Do they struggle with things like catching or throwing a ball, playing sports, or even making friends? Or maybe you were that kid once upon a time?
In today’s episode, I’m chatting with pediatric occupational therapy assistant Rachel Harrington all about primitive reflexes—what they are, how and when they develop, and how they impact both kids and adults in daily life.
We dive into how these reflexes get kick-started during the birthing process, how many are guided by the visual system, and why it’s so important to integrate them as children grow. We also talk about how primitive reflexes can actually come back after trauma or as part of the aging process, acting as a protective mechanism.
Rachel breaks down the signs of poor reflex integration—things like ongoing anxiety, vestibular dysfunction, feeling ungrounded, poor left/right coordination, ADHD, bedwetting, IBS, trouble sitting still, speech or articulation challenges, and more.
We nerd out a bit on the neuroanatomy behind primitive reflexes and get into practical tools like breathing exercises, motor control drills, and vestibular activities. We even chat about how these concepts overlap with applied neuro training.
Plus, Rachel shares activity ideas for kids who struggle with emotional regulation and explains how to choose drills based on whether a child is over- or under-responsive.
Huge thanks to Rachel for sharing her deep knowledge of pediatric occupational therapy and for creating such incredible resources for both parents and practitioners.

Fri, 07 Nov 2025 - 51 - #51 - Understanding Pain
What if most people are fundamentally misunderstanding how pain works? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, about how I think about pain through an applied neurology lens. I discuss the psychology of pain, how we usually associate pain with injury, how pain is a construct of the brain related to threat, and why understanding the true nature of pain can be the single most powerful revelation for many of my clients. I also discuss how I approach acute pain related to injury vs chronic pain, why movement tends to be so helpful for pain, the threat bucket, the concept of nociception, muscle pain vs joint pain, referral-based visceral pain, what's actually causing headaches, pain disorders and more. I also discuss some of my favorite interventions for dealing with pain ranging from techniques such as blood-flow restriction and breathing exercises to trigeminal nerve activation and lymphatic drainage techniques. This episode is a great review of many essential applied neurology concepts around pain and includes some of my go-to tools and insights for dealing with pain when nothing else seems to be working.

Fri, 31 Oct 2025 - 50 - #50 - Your Hearing May Be Your Weakest Link
What if listening to music in just one ear could make your pain go away? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, about how we process sound and why it can be an incredible tool for improving balance, posture and muscle tone as well as decreasing pain. I discuss how audio is processed in the brain, what pathways it follows, what related systems it is connected to in a neurological context, and how a hearing deficiency can have some wide ranging and surprising effects on the body and performance. I lay out a simple assessment process for evaluating your hearing, as well as how to use specific sound stimulation techniques to target deficiencies in hearing or to support other systems such as the trigeminal nerve and the vestibular or sympathetic systems. I also discuss phenomena like tinnitus, whether different frequencies in the audio spectrum have different effects, why hearing deficiencies that have neurological effects may not be considered diagnosable by an audiologist, how your brain can compensate for deficiencies in hearing, tone generators, tuning forks, bone-conduction headphones, stacking, and more.

Fri, 03 Oct 2025 - 48 - #48 - The Surprising Benefits of Pelvic Floor Training
What if kegels aren't working for you? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, all about the pelvic floor. I discuss the anatomy around the pelvic floor, common problems you might not realize are related to poor pelvic floor function, an old injury I had that caused asymmetries and tonal issues with my pelvic floor, why I think most pelvic floor rehabilitation like kegels aren't that successful, and why focusing on the reflexive control of the pelvic floor may be the more fruitful path. I discuss drills and exercises that can improve pelvic floor function that go beyond just voluntary contraction work, such as spinal mobility work, breathing drills and techniques, bilateral complex movements, vibration, vestibular drills, tongue drills, stacking, and more. This is a fantastic topic for applied neurology due to the reflexive nature of pelvic floor control and the often indirect paths you need to take to affect its function for the better.

Fri, 12 Sep 2025 - 47 - #47 - What People Get WRONG about the Sympathetic System
What if elevating sympathetics could actually help with pain and stress? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, all about the much-maligned sympathetic system. I discuss the neurology and anatomy of the sympathetic system and explain how it works in tandem with other systems to achieve the correct balance needed for movement, strength-training, and more. I outline cases where this balance isn't being met, and how raising sympathetics, even when it may seem counter-intuitive, might be the solution to problems with pain, decreased mobility, and anxiety. I go over signs that the sympathetic system might be under-performing, and give you drills and assessments to activate the sympathetic system in a targeted way to improve outcomes without raising threat and causing more issues. I also discuss the idea of intentionally raising sympathetics to actually provoke a parasympathetic response later. This episode includes discussion of vision drills, breathing techniques, using light and sound, circadian rhythms, cold temperature, acupuncture tools, vigorous workouts, stretching and more.

Sat, 23 Aug 2025 - 46 - #46 - Athletic Performance - Training Your Eyes to Improve Your Reaction Speed
What if training "fast" isn't actually the best way to improve reaction time for athletes? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, all about improving reaction speed to improve athletic performance. I discuss the neurology of reaction speed and how decisions are often made after first taking in visual information and understanding it. This is why improving the speed of visual recognition is actually the game-changer many coaches and athletes are missing from their training. I outline 4 main categories of vision, how to assess and train each of them, and how to make our training specific for each athlete based on their own neurology. I also talk about depth perception, peripheral vision, contrast sensitivity, sympathetic tone, stacking cognitive skills, perturbation, and more. This is one of our longer episodes filled with actionable assessments, drills, and gems that you can put into your practice immediately to train your reaction speed and improve your athletic performance.

Sat, 16 Aug 2025 - 45 - #45 - Interoception and Understanding What Your Body Is Telling You
If you had a sense that could tell you how your body was functioning, would you use it? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, all about interoception and the important role it plays in the nervous system. I begin with a story about a client that was essentially blind to the internal functions and sensations of her own body and the challenges she faced in both training and day-to-day life. I go on to define interoception, the relevant anatomy of the brain and body, its connection to both emotion and physical sensation, and more. I discuss the importance of autonomic function to healthy movement and performance, drills you can use to upregulate and downregulate interoception, and how to assess those drills to make sure you are moving in the right direction for your specific goals. I also discuss various techniques and modalities, like breathing, tongue exercises, meditation, insular belts, and more. Throughout the episode, I tie these concepts and drills back to my client, so I can provide context and show how these concepts are applied in the real world, and to underscore just how life-changing improving someone's sense of interoception can be.

Sat, 02 Aug 2025 - 44 - #44 - Fixing Alisha's Back Pain
What do applied neurology professionals do when they injure their back? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, about Alisha's recent back injury and the tools we used immediately to start to fix her pain and get her back to training. I talk about how she got injured while we were moving, and then go step by step and detail what we did on day one and then throughout the first week to help get her back on track. I discuss how we used the assessment process, combined with some clues from her training history, to find her high-payoff drills, and how we stacked them and drilled them repeatedly until we were able to majorly improve her mobility, relieve her pain, and get her back to her normal self. I also discuss some of the dead-ends we embarked upon that sounded good in theory, but didn't pass the assessment process. This is a case-study in applied neurology, and covers a plethora of concepts, including threat assessment, stacking, closed chain vs open-chain positions, the table dilemma, inhibition tools, isometrics, audio stimulation, tractioning and more. I also talk about my balance-board, and whether or not I consider it valuable as a tool for vestibular training.

Sat, 19 Jul 2025 - 43 - #43 - Inhibition Tools - How To Turn Down Your Pain
What if you could decrease your pain by covering one eye? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, about inhibition tools and how removing stimulus can actually be the key to success when it comes to decreasing pain and improving movement. I talk about overactivity in different systems of the brain, and why sometimes staying in that elevated state of activity can lead to pain, anxiety, lack of focus, training imbalances, and more. By inhibiting some parts of the nervous system, we can focus our training away from areas that are increasing threat, or are simply doing too much of the work so that we can target a weaker system that isn't properly doing it's job. I relay the stories of several clients that benefited from inhibition tools, and give concrete examples of tools that you can easily purchase or make at home. This is a powerful concept that can be useful for those who keep trying to "train" their problems without success, or have "tried everything" and nothing works.

Fri, 13 Jun 2025 - 42 - #42 - The Neurology of Movement
What if you could fix your tight hamstrings by gargling water? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, about how we can better understand movement by learning about the structures of the brain. I go over the main areas of the brain associated with movement, and discuss their location, their function, how to assess them, and how to train them. This episode ties together a bunch of concepts previously discussed on the podcast, like threat, the opposing joint theory, posture and gait assessment, and more, but with a focus on the brain areas that drive many of the inputs and outputs for the rest of the body. We also have a free-ranging discussion around our recent experiences with applied neurology in our own training, and discuss the real-world impacts that gargling, humming, pencil pushups, finger tapping, and vestibular drills are having on our lives today.

Fri, 30 May 2025 - 41 - #41 - Gait Assessment - The Neuroscience of Walking
What if you could design your training program based on how you walk? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, about gait assessment, and how the way you walk can reveal the health of your brain and give you clues about how to improve your movement and decrease pain. I discuss the difference between running gait and walking gait, the biomechanical rabbit hole, and why gait assessment is one of my most important assessment tools. I break down four common patterns to look for when assessing gait and give details on how to recognize them, what they mean for the brain and higher order systems, and starting points for training based on each pattern. I also talk about my earliest experiences with gait assessment, why people on Instagram think I'm crazy, and why my current training program revolves around improving my own walking gait.

Fri, 23 May 2025 - 40 - #40 - Hypermobility and Pain: What You Need To Know
Are you or is someone you know hypermobile and dealing with pain? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, all about hypermobility, and how it's often connected to chronic pain, injury, and even autonomic issues. I use neurology to explain why this might be, as well as discuss how I approach training hypermobile individuals to decrease pain, optimize interoception, and improve strength in end-ranges of motion. I also discuss how hypermobile individuals are often attracted to modalities centered around flexibility, why this might not be the best training tool for them, and why hypermobility can lead to mapping with pain instead of proprioception, especially at end-ranges of motion. This episode is a great starting point for tackling common issues associated with hypermobility and lays out practical training tools that you can implement right away to start to assess and improve movement and decrease pain in hypermobile individuals.

Fri, 09 May 2025 - 39 - #39 - Programming Strength, Movement, and Neurology
Did you know that applied neurology isn't actually the goal? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, about the importance of a balanced strength and movement practice as the foundation for a healthy, fit, and pain-free life. I discuss my own training practice, the pros and cons of following a strict regimen vs following your intuition, why interoception is one of the most important things I teach, why I prioritize balance and coordination over strength, free weights vs machines, gait cycle, rate of perceived exertion and more. I outline the programming we follow in our Strength Dojo and how we integrate applied neurology throughout while still building strength, mobility, and resilience. I also caution the applied neurology enthusiasts against seeing everything in terms of targeted interventions when focusing on the fundamentals may be the solution they are seeking. This episode will empower you to better understand how your body responds to training, and to think about training in a more comprehensive way than just getting faster or stronger.

Fri, 02 May 2025 - 38 - #38 - Training Your Trigeminal Nerve
What if your knee pain can be cured by smelling salts? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, all about the trigeminal nerve and why this large nerve in the face can have far reaching effects on the rest of the body. I discuss the anatomy of the trigeminal nerve, its primary functions, its connection to the brainstem and cranial nerves, and how these connections can manifest in surprising ways. I go over how to assess and train different aspects of the trigeminal nerve, using tools that range from touch, to motor control, to vision, to activating the nasal cavity through scent, and how you can use these tools today to improve trigeminal function, increase map clarity, reduce threat, and potentially reduce or eliminate pain or movement dysfunction. While the focus is on the trigeminal nerve, we cover a variety of related topics from jaw alignment, scoliosis, autonomic function, blood pressure, botox and more, and underscore the importance of not relying solely on biomechanical connections when dealing with pain and mobility issues.

Fri, 18 Apr 2025 - 37 - #37 - What you REALLY need to know about the Vagus Nerve
Have you ever heard someone say your vagus nerve needs a reset? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, all about the Vagus nerve and navigate the line between fact and fiction with regard to this increasingly popular focal point for health and movement professionals. I outline the anatomy of the vagus nerve and discuss why it's often called the "wandering nerve" because it connects to so many different vital organs and higher order systems in the body. By studying the anatomy of the vagus nerve, I show how it can be used therapeutically to target a myriad of different areas and functions of the body, and why its connective power is also why it's often so misunderstood. I discuss some common points of activation that I use to access the vagus nerve and clarify the map, as well as how to assess these interventions to make sure they are actually helping the client. This is a massive episode that covers a ton of ground from the parasympathetic system and vestibular system down to the interoceptive system and digestive system, and touches on inflammation, recovery, anxiety, depression, blood pressure, breathing, diet, balance and more. I also discuss the lymphatic system and some simple drills I use to improve recovery, and why I think it's so important for people to learn to listen to their own bodies.

Sat, 29 Mar 2025 - 36 - #36 - Your Chronic Pain May Be A Fuel Issue with Matt Bush
Are you managing chronic pain? Do you have the type of pain that "flares up?" Or, maybe your pain moves from one body part to another and you're constantly playing whack-a-mole with your pain.
In today's episode, I speak with one of my very first instructors of applied neurology, Matt Bush, about signs and symptoms suggesting your brain and body are in need of fuel support. We talk about how your brain needs two things to stay alive - fuel and activation. And, your brain's preferred source of fuel is glucose along with oxygen. We talk about acute signs of a fuel deficit like decreases performance, increases in pain, a decrease in cognition and coordination, and increased emotional volatility. We cover what it looks like when you have a more longstanding fuel deficit that can lead to more systemic dysfunction, neural degeneration, emotional dysregulation and even metabolic disease. We share the physiology behind increasing oxygenation of your brain and tissues through CO2 tolerance training, the most important categories of breath training to consider to increase oxygen utilization at the cellular level, and styles of breathing to stay away from if you identify with having a fuel issue. We also cover how metabolic dysfunction may be the root of autoimmune illnesses, how ketosis is not a sustainable strategy for long term health, and which sources of carbohydrates are ideal, not just for brain health, but for overall metabolic health and wellbeing.
Thank you to my mentor and co-host for today's podcast, Matt Bush, for delivering such an awesome lesson on fueling your brain and your body. Click below to follow and work with Matt and his team at Next Level Neuro.

Fri, 21 Mar 2025 - 35 - #35 - Neuromechanic Drills That You Can Use Today
What if you could solve your carpal tunnel or sciatic problems with a single drill? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, about a category of drills that directly target the peripheral nerves called neuromechanics. I discuss how the concept of mobility applies not only to the joints and muscles but also the nerves, how understanding the anatomy of nerves is crucial to understanding how to use neuromechanics correctly, and how to apply these concepts for real-world results with pain and mobility. I break down neuromechanic drills into three main categories - tensioning, slacking, and sliding, and explain how choosing different drivers can lead to almost limitless combinations with specific targets and effects. I also discuss how this category of drills is often misunderstood or misapplied, and what to watch out for when applying these drills to resolve specific pain issues or to simply mobilize the nerves for a broader training effect. Neuromechanic drills can be an extremely powerful tool when used correctly and this episode will help you hit the ground running so you can integrate them into your own practice.

Fri, 28 Feb 2025 - 34 - #34 - How a Yogi Conquered A Decade Long Battle with Low Back Pain (Krista's Story)
Have you ever experienced chronic pain? Maybe you've seen every practitioner and doctor and even tried surgery to resolve your pain, but years later you are still struggling? This is the story of Dojo member and yoga therapist, Krista Quinn.
Over 10 years ago, Krista found us on instagram after battling a decade long of low back pain. A laminectomy at age 22 initially provided relief for a year or two but her pain came back with a persistent vengeance, putting her in and out of the emergency room. In this episode, Krista and I recall how we met, the first few sessions using applied neurology and how sensory work as strange and simple as smelling cinnamon, poking with a paper clip, applying kinesiotape, and some cerebellar training provided tremendous relief. Throughout our work together Krista went from a yogi who couldn't do a forward fold due to her back pain to practicing advanced arm balancing positions with ease and coaching others with chronic back pain.
We also talk about a realistic timeline for getting out of chronic pain, the role of your mindset, and how behavior change is a huge factor in eliminating pain.
Thank you to Dojo Member, Krista Quinn for sharing your story and for demonstrating the commitment and dedication required to overcome chronic pain.

Tue, 25 Feb 2025 - 33 - #33 - A Fighting Chance - Jason's Battle With Cancer
What would you do if you were facing a terminal diagnosis? Do you give up or do you fight? This is the reality for Dojo Member, Jason Gallman. Over a year ago Jason came to us after having a history of beating cancer and surviving a spinal stroke. He discovered some mobility drills that helped him exercise without low back pain and improved some sensation in his feet. Just a couple months in we received a message from Jason that he was facing a potential terminal diagnosis. He learned that he has stage 4 prostate cancer. Jason shares: "There is no cure and I'm living with the reality of no energy and a shorter life." Jason is a husband, a father, a grandfather, a preacher, a stand-up member of his community, and an inspiration to so many. Despite the challenges he is facing he chooses to get up and go. He shares how he has used what he has learned in the Dojo to manage symptoms, to improve his energy, and he shares how the threat bucket concept has helped him keep perspective when symptoms arise and which tools he needs to call on in order to lessen the discomfort. It is an absolute honor to have Jason in this community and we hope that those of you who are struggling, or know somebody who is struggling, with a challenging health condition, you can share Jason's story and call on his spirit to pull you through.
Thank you to Neuro Dojo student and Dojo Member, Jason Gallman for sharing your deeply personal and inspiring story.

Sat, 22 Feb 2025 - 32 - #32 - Building Your Neuro Toolset
In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, about building your very own neuro toolset. I go over the main categories that I consider essential to my work in applied neurology, and what the top tools are that you can get to help you with your coaching, your training, and with tackling pain and mobility issues. I discuss tools for general training, sensory stimulation, visual training, breath training, reaction training, speed training, and more, and go in-depth on the why and how of different techniques that these tools can help you achieve. Most of these tools are cheap or even free, and can level up your personal or professional applied neurology practice. This episode goes into detail at the conceptual and application level, so even if you get none of these tools you will come away with a greater understanding of how to practice applied neurology and how to think about assessing and solving problems for yourself or your clients.

Sat, 08 Feb 2025 - 30 - #30 - Threat Where You Least Expect It
What if your chronic neck pain isn't a problem with your neck at all? In this episode, I speak with my trusty podcast producer, Tony, about unexpected sources of threat that could sneakily be causing your pain and mobility issues. I talk about a variety of factors like life stress, traumatic events, marathons, calorie deficits, intense training, visual impairments, specific colors of light, prescription lenses, laser eye surgery, mid-line surgeries, c-sections, concussions, low protein diets, breathing dysfunction, asthma, and more, and illustrate how using applied neurology can show us why seemingly unrelated factors can drive threat, pain, and injury in the body, even in completely different locations and unexpected ways. I tell story after story where these issues, when finally addressed, solve persistent problems with pain and mobility, and give you clues to figure out if there are unexpected sources of threat that you should look into to solve your own pain and movement issues. This is a long one, so grab your notebook and enjoy!

Fri, 31 Jan 2025 - 29 - #29 - What's Next for KRUSE ELITE?
In this episode, I speak with my trusty podcast producer, Tony, about the challenges and triumphs of 2024 for Kruse Elite and for myself personally. I talk about what it was like launching the podcast from scratch, my evolving approach to social media, how we grew our audience on YouTube from zero to thousands of subscribers, and why we are focusing more on long-form content and education. I discuss how shifting our focus to neuro-education has led to more and better engagement, why I think simply listing exercises no longer has value online, and how building a business based on social media is fraught with obstacles and misaligned incentives. This past year has been both one of the most challenging and also most rewarding for Kruse Elite, and we are looking forward to some new big things in 2025.

What if you could reduce pain from an injury with a single set of exercise? In this episode, I speak with my trusty podcast producer, Tony, about using applied neurology to supercharge recovery from an injury. I discuss my recent MCL sprain, and the tools and approaches I used to take what I thought was a 6 month injury to almost completely recovered in 2 weeks. I talk about the importance of movement and mobilizing the joint, why I believe RICE is not always the best protocol, working around range-of-motion limitations and pain, the value of targeted compression, breathing protocols, red light therapy, e-stim therapy, aquatic training for serious injuries, and more. This case study is packed with a myriad of varied and useful techniques that you can apply immediately to speed up your recovery, just remember the importance of the assessment process to guide you.

Mon, 23 Dec 2024 - 27 - #27 - Secrets to Improving Performance and Athletics
Want to learn what even professional athletes don't know about training optimally? In this episode, I speak with my trusty podcast producer, Tony, about using applied neurology to level up your performance and unlock your inner athlete. I outline some of my favorite training protocols that I use with athletes when they need to gain a competitive edge, not only giving you the actual methods that I use but also how and why these neurological-based approaches work. I also talk about some of the major things that were holding me back as an athlete before I learned about applied neurology, why vision training is linked to reaction time, why tension is great for strength but the enemy of athleticism, why talking about "feeling" your muscles when working out is doomed to fail, why C02 tolerance is somehow overlooked in endurance sports, and more.

Mon, 25 Nov 2024 - 26 - #26 - Your History Is Your Secret Weapon, Pt 2
Want to hear what the process of taking a history is really like? In Part 2 of this episode about training histories, I take a history of my podcast producer, Tony, on-air so you can listen in and follow along. While taking Tony's history, I explain my thought process and reasoning, zero in on some clues that might tell me more about what is going on with Tony's pain and movement issues, and offer some actionable strategies that Tony can implement right away to start feeling and moving better. I discuss some important concepts like what constitutes chronic pain, what it means to step into the blind map, the table dilemma, why direction matters when tractioning the skin, opposing joint theory, and more. Finally, I underscore the importance of creating buy-in with a client by getting them closer to their goal on day 1 and why applied neurology is called the science of hope.

Fri, 01 Nov 2024 - 25 - #25 - Your History Is Your Secret Weapon
Does your doctor or trainer know your training, health and injury history? Do you? In this episode, I speak with my trusty podcast producer, Tony, about the process of taking a personal history and why it's so fundamental to our applied neurology approach for eliminating pain and dysfunction. I walk you through the process I go through with every client to better understand what has led them to seek out my help and find clues along the way to get them feeling healthy and moving better again, sometimes during the very first session. I also discuss examples where health and fitness professionals may misdiagnose problems when they don't take a thorough history, why some people are addicted to exercise, why I don't ask certain questions on day one, and more. This is one of the most important components of my practice, and whether you're dealing with pain, just trying to move better, or building a movement practice of your own, this episode will give you valuable tools to design and implement your own history taking process.

Fri, 04 Oct 2024 - 24 - #24 - Learning Applied Neurology as a Chiropractor with Dr. Shaun Puro
Have you ever been in a position where you felt responsible for helping someone in pain and yet you didn't feel confident in your tools or your process?
Today, I speak with one of our members and Neuro Dojo students, Dr. Shaun Puro about his journey integrating applied neurology into his chiropractic practice. We discuss the tools he used as a chiropractor and the internal conflict he had when his techniques would help some people and not others. We talk about the transition he had as he began implementing brain-based assessments and exercises with his patients, how it was overwhelming at first but ultimately how he now feels confident that he can help anyone that comes into his life.
We talk about how powerful neuro-education is in getting patients to be committed and personally involved in their healing process. We talk shop about different patient cases and how we use our neuro assessments to pattern patients and more accurately select exercises to target their pain and performance issues. And, we talk about how cool it is to figure out which sensory inputs might be missing for a person that will help them move better and feel better.
Thank you to Neuro Dojo student, Dr. Shaun Puro for sharing your personal and professional journey in learning applied neurology. To work with Shaun, check out his practice:

Sat, 24 Aug 2024 - 23 - #23 - Change Your Brain to ELIMINATE Pain
Have you tried everything but you're still in pain? In this episode, I speak with my trusty podcast producer, Tony, about the concept of neuroplasticity and why it's so fundamental to our applied neurology approach for eliminating pain and dysfunction. I discuss how it's possible to change the function and structure of your brain through training and exercise, and what variables you need to keep in mind in order to create lasting change. I also discuss the importance of fuel, why exercise alone isn't enough, how to target specific issues based on someone's health and training history, and how plasticity can cut both ways if you're not careful. You can change your brain function to improve your movement and get rid of pain, you just have to use the right targeted approach.

What are some simple ways to incorporate neuroscience into your training? In this episode, I speak with my trusty podcast producer, Tony, about some of the simplest and highest payoff neuroscience-based exercises and techniques to improve your performance and quality of life. I discuss the concept of 'clarifying the map' and how drills that target the different systems in the neural hierarchy can solve pain and mobility problems and unlock performance gains that most people from athletes to everyday fitness enthusiasts are leaving on the table. I give examples of specific drills that target the visual, vestibular, and proprioceptive systems, discuss how speed is an underrated variable in training, explain why hinge joints like knees and elbows still benefit from rotational training, and underscore the importance of fuel in training, pain-management, and performance. I also discuss the difference between 'balance' and 'stability' training, why visual training is so resource-intensive, and how training the visual system can actually change your eyeglasses prescription. This episode is full of actionable tips and discussion that you can use immediately to train your brain to be better equipped to make you move and feel better in all aspects of life.

Fri, 02 Aug 2024 - 21 - #21 - The Neuroscience of Massage Therapy
Why does chiropractic, massage therapy, or foam rolling work for some people and not others? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, about therapeutic interventions and what is actually happening from a neurological perspective when someone gets a massage or goes to see a chiropractor. I talk about how manual techniques work at the receptor level and how to use that knowledge to select different techniques to solve problems like back or knee pain. I also talk about how those same receptors can aggravate sensitivities, and how knowing what receptors are involved can help you find a solution to your problem. I talk about vibration, sound, light touch, smell, deep tissue massage, trigger point, and more and run them through a neurological filter so that we can understand why what might work magic for some may actually exacerbate problems for others, all in the name of solving tricky and elusive pain and movement issues.

Fri, 12 Jul 2024 - 20 - #20 - The Neurology of Posture with Matt Bush
Do you have concerns about rounded shoulders, anterior pelvic tilt, a droopy shoulder or maybe even scoliosis? Or, maybe you have a chronically stiff neck, tight shoulders, and painful low back and you know your posture needs some work.
In today's episode, I speak with one of my very first instructors of applied neurology, Matt Bush, about posture and the neurologic systems responsible for posture. We talk about the way in which you carry yourself posturally is really habitual, reflexive, and involuntary in nature. We talk about how traditional attempts to improve posture are primarily focused on the voluntary aspect of the proprioceptive system - utilizing tools like trigger pointing, foam rolling, and stretching to "release" tight areas or strength training to improve muscle activation. We bridge you into the idea that the muscle tone imbalances you're experiencing are a direct result of deficits in higher order systems. We break down the roles your visual and vestibular system play in maintaining head and body position, balance, spatial awareness and autonomic control so that you can effectively and efficiently hold your posture against gravity. We talk about key brain areas that are responsible for regulating posture control and resting muscle tone so that you can find a sense of balance and equilibrium posturally. And, we dive into some intro level exercises that you can use to begin to improve your posture at the brain-level.
Thank you to my mentor and co-host for today's podcast, Matt Bush, for delivering such an awesome lesson on the neurology of posture. Click below to follow and work with Matt and his team at Next Level Neuro:

Tue, 04 Jun 2024 - 18 - #18 - The Neuroscience of Yoga and Bodybuilding
What do yoga and bodybuilding have in common? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, about how you can apply a neuroscience based filter to pretty much any fitness or movement practice to better understand and assess its effectiveness. I talk specifically about yoga and bodybuilding and how they interact with different systems in the brain and the nervous system and why and in what ways targeting those systems may be beneficial to your health and fitness. I go over the active/passive gap and discuss the differences between flexibility and mobility, why mindfulness, stretching, and breathing exercises can all target the same region of the brain, and why interoception as found in yoga and bodybuilding is linked to better executive function and decision-making.

Fri, 31 May 2024 - 17 - #17 - The Neural Hierarchy Pt 3: The Proprioceptive System
What if an old scar is causing your brain to erroneously map where your body is in space? In Part 3 of a series on the neural hierarchy, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, all about the proprioceptive system and how our sense of where our body is in space lives not in the body, but rather in the brain. I discuss why the proprioceptive system is closely related to performance and pain, and how this system ties in with the rest of the neural hierarchy to make decisions about movement, balance, mobility and threat. By understanding how the proprioceptive mental map is made, I show how seemingly unrelated exercises that "clarify the map" can help decrease pain, increase performance, and even lessen things like anxiety and stress.

Thu, 25 Apr 2024 - 16 - #16 - The Neural Hierarchy Pt 2: The Vestibular System
What if your tight calves are actually caused by a deficiency in how your brain perceives balance? In Part 2 of a series on the neural hierarchy, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, all about the often overlooked vestibular system and how it is integrally related to balance, posture, respiration, blood pressure, and potentially, pain and performance. I discuss some clues that might make me suspect someone has a vestibular deficiency, how I can test the vestibular system, what kinds of drills and exercises you can use to train the vestibular system, and more. I also tell some powerful stories of clients that had lifelong vestibular deficits that they weren't aware of, and that when identified and targeted, led to huge improvements in quality of life and performance.

Fri, 29 Mar 2024 - 15 - #15 - The Neural Hierarchy Pt 1: The Visual System
The neural hierarchy is a powerful explanatory framework for how our brain relies on sensory information when we are active, but what if the vast majority of the movement and fitness industry only focuses on the least important sensory system? Today, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, about the neural hierarchy. I outline what the three sensory systems in the neural hierarchy are and focus on the visual system which accounts for 70% of the sensory information that our brain receives. I discuss my own challenges with visual impairment as a young athlete, how the visual system interacts with movement and athletic performance, and why a visual deficit can potentially lead to pain and injury. I also discuss how training and activating the visual system can have surprising benefits in pain management, threat reduction, and strength and coordination.

Tue, 06 Feb 2024 - 12 - #12 - The Science of Pain (How It Works and Factors that Contribute to Your Pain Experience)
Understanding how pain works and where it comes from is one of the most important pieces of the puzzle when it comes to solving your own pain issues. Pain can be very frightening for people because they generally associate pain with damage, but this is not necessarily true. Today, my goal is to introduce you to pain science to help you learn about what pain is, where it comes from, and why it exists in the first place.
We cover these 4 main concepts:
- Pain lives in the brain Pain does not equal injury and injury does not equal pain The severity of your pain does not dictate the severity of your problem Just because you have pain does not mean you have a mechanical problem
Pain is a signal. It is a protective output. The goal of the pain is to get you to change your behavior in some way. So you have to ask yourself, 'what is the protective reason for my pain?'
I discuss a variety of factors that may contribute to your pain experience, a study on low back imaging of people with bulging discs or disc degeneration yet they had no pain, a story of a young gymnast with chronic back pain years after her original injury, and a review of The Threat Bucket as an educational tool to help you identify areas of your life that may be contributing to your pain experience.

Fri, 12 Jan 2024 - 11 - #11 - Applying Interventions for Pain and Mobility
When you have pain or mobility issues, many will offer advice on what you should do, whether it's stretching, foam rolling, certain exercises or even surgery. Today, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, about how I think about applying interventions to relieve pain and get your body moving properly. I discuss what happens when you apply a stimulus to the body from a neurological perspective as well as how to then assess whether it's helping or not. I also discuss different types of stimuli, why it's possible to run any modality through a neurological framework to assess its effectiveness, and several different higher order systems in the body that let me hone in on my approach to interventions for pain relief and mobility. I also address the potential for the placebo effect to occur and share a story of how some of my students in the Neuro Dojo were able to eliminate my knee pain without even being in the same room as me.

Fri, 15 Dec 2023 - 9 - #9 - Why You Need Minimalist Shoes
Have you ever wondered - what exactly is a minimalist shoe? Or, maybe you haven't heard of them but you need some strategies for improving your foot health. Today, I share my first introduction to minimalist shoes, how to ease into barefoot-style shoes and why it's so important to get your feet a pair of "ninja booties." I discuss some of the key features to look for in a minimalist shoe, how to perform a shoe test to identify the flexibility and mobility of the shoe itself, how conventional footwear negatively alters the way you move and can actually compress your joints, interfering with reflexes that are designed to keep your muscles strong and engaged. I also discuss strategies for transitioning into minimalist footwear and how to apply the concept of "progressive overload" to adapt to wearing barefoot shoes. I also cover some common questions like whether minimalist shoes are okay for seniors, on pavement or while hiking and situations where it might be best to alternate between conventional and minimalist footwear.
Here are two of our favorite minimalist shoe brands:

Fri, 08 Dec 2023 - 8 - #8 - You Need To Keep Moving
The hardest people for me to help are the ones that aren't moving on a regular basis. Today, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, about why inactivity leads to all sorts of other problems downstream and why it's so important to maintain a regular movement practice. I discuss some of the main causes of inactivity, from pain and injury to sedentary lifestyles, and dig into some core concepts like the movement box and the pain vortex, that can help us understand what happens when your movement has been compromised. I also discuss how to approach injuries, some common myths and misconceptions around healing from injury, the use of "crude touch" and other non-intuitive methods to help with pain and mobility, why motivation is less effective than habit, why I no longer use the functional movement screen, and more.
