- 216 - MBP #189 Dom Smart
Today I'm talking with Dom Smart, who makes music as Neurodriver and runs the plugin company Devious Machines. He spent about fifteen years doing sound design for games, a lot of it on the Harry Potter games at Electronic Arts, and back in the day he was half of the breaks act Far Too Loud. Then he taught himself C plus plus, teamed up with his business partner Jim Credland, and they made Texture and Infiltrator. I still use Texture all the time. He also just finished a new Neurodriver album after a long break from music, and it's on Alpaka Musik.
We get into the granular car engine stuff they were doing at E A, which is kind of insane, and how Texture started as a techno trick with gated white noise under the hi hats. He also tries to explain the Fourier transform to me, which I still don't fully get. We talk about why pretty much only audio software uses knobs, saying no to power user features so a plugin stays easy to use, the sample based instrument they've been working on for ages, and how he's coding with Claude now.
And then it turns into a bigger thing about AI and art, and why prompting code feels totally different to him than prompting a song.
Hope you dig it.

Thu, 08 Oct 2026 - 1h 23min - 215 - MBP #188 AHEE
Today I've got AHEE back on the podcast — Chris Adams. He came up through audio engineering and synthesis, and he's spent years pulling dubstep, trap and future bass into one sound, with releases on Bassrush, Subsidia, Circus Records and Wakaan, and support slots for Excision, Subtronics, Shpongle and Liquid Stranger. He also puts a lot of producer knowledge out for free on YouTube, which I respect.
Last time we spoke he'd moved onto a farm outside Portland, Oregon. He's still there, still has the chickens.
Most of this one is about his new DJ/VJ rig. Instead of DJing with WAVs and MP3s he's DJing with MOVs, running them through Rekordbox with the CDJs as a MIDI controller, so the audio and the visuals come off the same file and the faders crossfade both at once. He turned the camera around and walked me through the whole thing, including where the visuals come from, which is mostly CapCut and InShot on his phone, layering up gifs and old commissioned artwork into what he calls hyper collages.
We also get into having far more finished music than you can ever put out, why he's releasing it as the Bass Quest EPs instead of albums, the forty eight albums he made in four years at college, and why he started Zot Records. And then there's a long detour into UFOs, including the time he stepped out of his body onto a ship while holding a field recorder, and what his mate said when he stepped back in.

Thu, 03 Sep 2026 - 1h 18min - 214 - MBP #187 Tom Cosm
Today we're joined by Tom Cosm, a New Zealand-born producer, technologist, coder, and educator who's been pushing the boundaries of music and sound for over two decades. He's known for pioneering YouTube tutorials that taught a generation of producers, and for building systems that turn things like tree-disease data and biometric signals into actual music. He's currently Technical Director at Telepathic Instruments, where he built the first prototype of Orchid and now oversees its development.
We start out talking about travel and jet lag recovery, which sounds like small talk but turns into a pretty real conversation about what it actually feels like to be constantly in motion — the post-travel bounce, the crash that follows, and learning to slow down when you get home. Tom just got back from London, Berlin, and Spain, partly for a Telepathic team meetup and a pop-up where people could come play Orchid in person, and partly for Superbooth, which he describes as basically a Vegas casino lobby for modular nerds — in a forest.
From there we get into Telepathic Instruments and how he got involved — Kevin Parker reached out after seeing his work on YouTube — and what the development of Orchid has actually looked like. We talk about what the device is trying to do, how community feedback from their early adopters has shaped the features, and what's coming next. Hope you enjoy it. Please welcome Tom Cosm.

Thu, 11 Jun 2026 - 1h 43min - 213 - MBP #186 David Satori
Today we're joined by David Satori — co-founder of Beats Antique alongside Zoe Jakes and Sidecar Tommy, a trio that came out of the San Francisco performance underground, Burning Man, and the West Coast Circus Bass music scene. He's also co-founder of Dirtwire with Evan Fraser and Mark Reveley, which blends experimental bass music with folk music from around the world. Between the two projects he's co-produced and recorded over 20 albums in the past 15 years. He also co-founded a nonprofit called SunRise Studios Collective, which builds micro recording and multimedia studios in under-resourced communities around the world to give youth a voice through music and production.
David and I actually go back to a tour we did together in 2017, so it was good to catch up. We spend a good chunk of this one talking about life on the road — buying and converting buses, what it actually costs to tour as an independent artist, and the tradeoffs between owning your vehicle versus renting. He just got off a two month run with Dirtwire and shares what touring looks like for them right now, including how they run their live setup with Ableton and handle sound checks. Hope you enjoy it. Please welcome David Satori.
Thu, 28 May 2026 - 1h 11min - 212 - MBP #185 Nicholas Yochum
Today we're joined by Nicholas Yochum, an LA based sound designer currently working at Blizzard on Overwatch, where he focuses on synthesized sounds to help create effects with a more clean, stylized aesthetic. He's on the heroes team and is currently working on new heroes for the game.
Nicholas and I actually go way back to like 2012 in Boston, so it's cool to finally catch up. We get into how he got into the industry — starting out at a third party audio company called Hexany, which he describes as kind of like sound design boot camp, and eventually landing a senior sound designer role at Blizzard, which even he still seems a little surprised about.
We talk about what stylized sound design actually means — why game audio has been pulling more and more from the electronic music world, and how listening to stuff like Noisia is basically research at this point. We also get into the difference between working at a third party studio versus being embedded on a game team, and why that sense of ownership and connection to the work ended up mattering a lot to him.
Hope you enjoy it. Please welcome Nicholas Yochum.

Today we're joined by Mr. Wobbles, a.k.a. Austin O'Brien — a live loop station artist who's built his own approach to creating music entirely in the moment.
We get into where the name Mr. Wobbles actually came from — which involves a beatboxing Ventrilo server, a wah bass, and a guy who turned out to be a three-time world champ. Austin talks about coming up as a beatboxer when he couldn't afford production gear, doing street performances, and running a touring beatbox troop — and how all of that shaped his obsession with the live element. We also get into why live performance feels so absent from EDM right now, and what he thinks is missing when shows lean harder on production value than on the actual music. And we talk about where he's at now with learning to produce, trying to bridge that gap between his live setup and the in-the-box world.
He's playing 1720 in Los Angeles on April 24th with Honeycomb, so go check that out if you're in the area. Hope you enjoy the episode.

Today's guest on The Mr. Bill Podcast is Rob Talbott of Dodge & Fuski and co-founder of Disciple.
Rob's been producing since the early 2000s and came up during the early UK dubstep era, back when scenes were small, MySpace was the main discovery tool, and nothing happened overnight. Dodge & Fuski was a key part of that moment, and Disciple went on to become home to a generation of artists who grew into long-term careers.
We talk about when music stopped being a hobby and started feeling like a job, what it was really like coming up before modern social media, and how slow and unglamorous those early years actually were. We also get into the realities of running a label, balancing creativity with business, and the burnout that can come with doing both at once.
Rob also opens up about stepping away from music for several years, what caused that disconnect, and what it has been like coming back after a long hiatus. We talk about how his relationship with music has changed and why he is enjoying it again now.
This is an honest, behind-the-scenes conversation about building things, burning out, and finding your way back to the thing you cared about in the first place. Rob Talbott Links

Opiuo is a genre-bending plethora of auditory and visual masterclasses. Born in 1984 in rural New Zealand, his parents provided the land upon which music festivals were held. This extremely formative growth surrounded by the early incarnations of Aotearoa's electronic music scene exposed him to the celebration of life through self-expression, dance, and giant sound systems. These experiences shaped so much of who he is & what he stands for today. Positivity and movement at the core of the project, his music is an infectious electronic based blend of funk, soul, psychedelia, and booty-shaking bass.
Now calling Australia home, Oscar tours his party-starting music throughout the globe. Having spent more than a decade performing at some of the world's most renowned festivals and venues including Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, and Coachella, as well as selling out Colorado's famous Red Rocks Amphitheatre multiple times, he's performed his music in an unimaginably large array of formats. From self-built Orchestras, to collaborating with symphony choirs, touring his own Opiuo Band, and as an immersive solo audio & visual show, his live creativity is limitless.
Taking home the New Zealand Music Award for Best Electronic Album in 2014, his catalogue is vast. Having released 6 full-length albums, 10 EPs, and a myriad of singles and remixes over the last 14 years. In his own words, he is still "just getting started!".

BIO: Benn Jordan's career began in the late 1990's as a recording artist most widely released under the moniker "The Flashbulb". A decade later, Benn would become synonymous with artist advocacy after he purchased his music rights back from record labels, formed a non-profit publisher, and challenged the early models of digital music distribution by using peer-to-peer file transfers instead of iTunes. This led to Benn being a consultant for Bandcamp before the service launched in 2007.
After expanding his non-profit to carry a music education school and community center in Chicago, Benn moved to the Atlanta area in 2017 and started what has now become one of the most popular YouTube channels in the pro-audio and audio technology space. The channel now exists under Benn's non-profit umbrella and funds data-science and the never ending challenge of finding ethical business models that can make the music business easier to navigate for artists and creators. During this time his unique relationship with audio-related businesses and organizations expanded as fast as his amount of viewers and public reach.
Benn Jordan doesn't exactly keep it a secret that he's discontent with the way independent artists have been treated by the tech industry, and he is very proactive about getting ahead of the curve and attempting to help write and set ethical standards for AI audio technology, and holds patents in technology fighting the non-consensual training of generative AI.

Thu, 09 Jan 2025 - 1h 35min - 189 - MBP #162 Ainonow
Ainonow is an interdisciplinary and enigmatic artist focused on electronic music production. His musical journey began playing the viola in an orchestra at the age of nine, where he began to fall in love with music. However, the classical world alone was not enough to satisfy his musical curiosity. Swirling in and out of bands while playing bass guitar, he experimented with different styles until eventually discovering underground electronic music and hip hop. Inspired by the hypnotic beats and hard-hitting bass of these genres, he dove into electronic music production and the infinite timbres permitted by this new approach to music creation. On his critically acclaimed, debut two-track EP Exile Ainonow showcased some of his range in the genre of drum & bass starting out with the title track Exile, an industrial, raw, and ruthlessly rhythmic minimal jungle track. The second track of the EP, Triturate, then launches into a meticulously layered, high energy neurofunk song that holds nothing back. He followed up his debut release with Bedlam, a deep neuro drum & bass song blending sinister soundscapes with aggressive beats and haunting melodies, alongside fellow artist Slaythoven. Now, he has released yet another single, Forlorn, a liquid roller drum & bass track that plays heavily with tension and release, combining intricate beats and ambient textures. With such a diverse background and range of influences, Ainonow's tracks traverse a broad spectrum of sonic landscapes. Combining elements of dark and heavy drum & bass, broken beat halftime and experimental bass music, he takes his listeners on a musical journey soaked in organic textures. As one of the most forward-thinking, rising artists in the world of underground electronic music, Ainonow's music speaks to the power of experimentation and the limitless possibilities of creative expression. In November 2016 he released the 'Displaced' EP, which covered a variety of atmospheres and speeds whilst keeping a consistently dance floor friendly sound. After co-founding the record label Slug Wife, he turned out a wide variety of material, including his two solo albums to date, 'More' (2018) and 'Split' (2020), both of which were received to great acclaim. He's also put out two albums with collaborator Chalky, entitled 'Bright Spots' (2018) and 'Strange Changes' (2020), exploring instrument driven Jazz flavours and psychedelia. Show Takeaways:
Brain-computer interfaces have the potential to revolutionize music creation, but there are challenges to overcome, such as data transfer and the role of musical knowledge. AI can be a useful tool in music production, from generating lyrics to providing information about plugins and audio files. Creativity is subjective, and the definition of creativity can vary from person to person. AI can be creative in its ability to generate music, but a sense of ownership and sentimental value may be lacking. Imperfections and randomness can add depth and authenticity to music production, and tools like Eurorack can provide unique sounds and experiences. Language has limitations in expressing emotions in music, and the complexity of defining concepts like holes and chairs highlights the challenges of categorization.

Thu, 29 Feb 2024 - 1h 22min - 168 - MBP #141 David Packouz
This podcast episode will delve into the life of David Mordechai Packouz, a former American arms dealer, musician, and inventor born on February 17, 1982. Packouz joined forces with Efraim Diveroli in September 2005 at AEY Inc., an arms company that quickly secured numerous contracts worth millions. Their notable achievement was a nearly $300 million contract in 2007 to supply the Afghan Army with vast quantities of ammunition, which controversially included prohibited Chinese ammunition, leading to significant legal and ethical issues. Packouz played a key role in concealing the origin of these munitions, resulting in a sentence of seven months of house arrest for conspiracy to defraud the United States. His story caught public attention and was later depicted in the 2016 film War Dogs, where Packouz made a cameo appearance. Beyond his controversial past, Packouz has reinvented himself as an inventor and CEO of Singular Sound, where he developed the BeatBuddy, a guitar pedal drum machine, showcasing his transition from arms dealing to music technology.

Dirty Funky Bass Music, but make it pretty. The vibe and soul of the Maddy O'Neal project combine soundscapes from all across the spectrum of genres. Rich in texture and atmosphere, her roots in funk and soul shine through in a bed of low-end frequencies, making for a unique environment for future bass and synth design to tie it all together. Hailing from Denver, Colorado, you can hear the direct electro-soul inspiration sprinkled in her productions, but she has managed to carve out her own unique lane within the bass community. As a self-taught producer and DJ with a wildly creative upbringing, Maddy's expression was formed by way of soulful melodic overtones, driven basslines, and glitched-out hip-hop grooves. Maddy's live performances consist of original compositions, drum pads, and an interwoven storyline ranging from down-low grimey bangers to shimmery mid-tempo vocal bass tracks and head-nodding disco. Her momentum is unstoppable, as she has been touring the country for the last 5 years, playing 90+ shows a year, spreading her infectious energy from stage to stage. With hits like "Zest Please," a collaboration with the iconic Clozee that amassed over 2 million Spotify plays in just one year, five EPs, and a massive sophomore LP "Ricochet" in 2022, followed by two volumes of remix albums, Maddy's repertoire is ever-expanding, leaving fan bases across the world wanting more. Maddy O'Neal has played Coachella, Lollapalooza, Lost Lands, Electric Forest, Bonnaroo Envision, North Coast, Red Rocks (x3), and many, many more. Her touring resume is long and accomplished by supporting such artists as Clozee, Pretty Lights, Griz, Big Gigantic, Liquid Stranger, The Floozies, Opiuo, Wreckno, STS9, Manic Focus, and more!

Channeling a love affair with classic '90s hip-hop, an affinity for otherworldly themes and an ear for raw funk, Barclay Crenshaw uses his given birth name to bare his soul and deliver a slowed-down, emotive collection of collaborations and instrumentals. His 2017 self-titled debut album was a left-field departure from his better-known alias, Claude VonStroke, but the quality is undeniably the same.
This project represents a mixture of modern bass and organic beats blended with gorgeous melodic moments and underlying grittiness to create an experience that is eclectic, expressive and expansive.
Coded art and epic visuals depicting ancient alien abductions and explorations of time and space furthers the sense of mystery and the unknown, harking back to the past while gazing into the future.
In 2022, Barclay announced his hiatus from Claude VonStroke and Dirtybird to focus full time on Barclay Crenshaw.

Thu, 23 Nov 2023 - 1h 33min - 161 - MBP #134 Benn Jordan
Benn Jordan's career began in the late 1990's as a recording artist, most widely released under the moniker "The Flashbulb".
Benn Jordan doesn't exactly keep it a secret that he's discontent with the way independent artists have been treated by the tech industry, and he is very proactive about getting ahead of the curve and attempting to help write and set ethical standards for AI audio technology.

Thu, 04 May 2023 - 1h 09min - 122 - MBP #122 Thys
This is Thys (Thijs de Vlieger): DJ, producer and composer from the north of the Netherlands. His DJ sets are a reflection of a two-decade-long musical course. With razor- sharp and unexpected mixing, he seamlessly blends a multitude of bass heavy genres. Creating energetic waves, not afraid to make bold leaps, but never losing sight of the groove. When producing club music De Vlieger loves to mix up BPMS and moods. His recent "Shoulder To Shoulder" EP is a clear statement of intent in that regard: a love letter to club music and the intuitive feeling of togetherness that loud music in a dark room can unlock for us. But when writing music in a more "composer" role, the range stretches even wider: Repeated collaborations with Amon Tobin, a short film for Iris Van Herpen with renowned harpist Lavinia Meijer (Biomimicry), a feature film with Salvador Breed (Mycelia; unreleased at the time of writing), three scores for contemporary dance performances, writing for full symphonic orchestra and classical ensembles, and an album composed for church organ, cello and viola, with the organ recorded by De Vlieger himself (unreleased): Thys will not be tied down to one sound or genre. As a member of widely recognised electronic music trio Noisia, Thys has toured the world for decades, has collaborated with and remixed a range of top tier artists like The Prodigy and Skrillex, and scored for AAA videogames such as DMC: Devil May Cry and Motorstorm: Apocalypse. Thu, 09 Mar 2023 - 1h 07min - 118 - MBP #118 Opiuo
Having spent more than a decade performing at some of the world's most renowned festivals and venues including Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, and Coachella, as well as selling out Colorado's Red Rocks Amphitheatre, he's performed his music in an unimaginably large array of formats. From the self-built SYZYGY Orchestras, to symphony choirs, touring his own Opiuo Band, and most recently as an immersive solo audio & visual show, his live creativity is limitless. Taking home the New Zealand Music Award for Best Electronic Album in 2014, his catalogue is vast. Having released 4 full-length albums, 10 EPs, and a myriad of singles and remixes over the last 12 years. His 5th studio album is titled "A Shape Of Sound" and is on the way this August. His most diverse, expansive, and detailed yet.

An interstellar cyber-funk bass champion, Freddy Todd has no time to waste in this galaxy. Born & raised in metro-Detroit, he found his way into the matrix at age 14, slowly understanding the intricacies of glitch found within Windows XP. After being bestowed a keytar from his main homie (his dad) at 22, he has continued to shred not only the minds of his fans but the evil vibes throughout the world. Freddy Todd is a psychedelic hyper throw down party for the people, and something to be witnessed and enjoyed at full volume… but also medium volume works (protect your ears). For the past decade, Freddy has played all over the realm from Australia to Canada to his main circuit in the United States. Notable performances include Red Rocks, Coachella, EDC Chicago, Okeechobee, Electric Forest, Shambala, Burning Man, on an airplane wing at a rave in the forest outside Portland, the Detroit Masonic Temple, and many others. Catch him at Electric Forest 2023 this summer along with many more soon to be announced festivities. "Freddy Todd, EDM producer, musician, and probable shapeshifter who has visited the golden idols of the moon…" -Duncan Trussell, 2019
