Happy Halloween, kiddies! The OST Party is back to celebrate spooky season with an episode all about 1995's Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight! "Tales from the Crypt" ran on HBO from 1989 to 1996, featuring spooky tales adapted from the comic series of the same name, and in 1995 they broke into movies with Demon Knight. The film stars William Sadler as the titular demon knight, protecting a sacred talisman from The Collector, played by national treasure Billy Zane, who's having a hellaciously good time in this ridiculous movie about demons, holy blood, and all kinds of gross, goopy nonsense. School's back in session, and we're back to discuss one of the most iconic high school comedies of the 80s: Fast Times at Ridgemont High!  Fast Times is a year in the life of your typical gang of high school kids: You got the kids just try to make a buck, the ones obsessed with sex, the ones obsessed with finding love... And then, of course, you've got Jeff Spicoli, Sean Penn's totally baked surfer dude. As their stories weave in and out, the film is threaded throughout by one of the largest soundtracks we've ever covered. It's graduation season and that means it's time to reminisce about the time we spent in college. And we do just that on this week's episode! We're discussing the soundtrack to the 1994 college dramedy With Honors. Joe Pesci plays homeless man Simon who befriends college senior Brendan Fraser, who's desperate to finish his senior thesis, and Pesci offers to help him in exchange for room and board.  All the life lessons and general feelgoodery is the perfect canvas for a soundtrack full of early 90s schmaltz and Gen X longing. We get a surprisingly great theme song by Madonna; requisite cover songs from Duran Duran, Belly and The Pretenders. There's also a haunting duet between Kristin Hersh and Michael Stipe, a goofy one-off from Mudhoney, and hey! Lindsey Buckingham is back! The film ain't much to talk about, but the soundtrack sent us down some wild rabbit holes. So crack open a cold one, put on your favorite alma mater sweater and join the party! We're back! It's been too long since our last episode, but Rad Day is here and we couldn't let it go without celebrating it properly. What is Rad, you ask? Rad is every 80s sports movie you've ever seen, wrapped up in a package of BMX bikes, cheesy butt rock and more synthesizers than you can jump a bike over. It's ridiculous, it's kinda lame, but's also so completely RAD. Helltrack is coming to town, and our hero Cru has a chance to prove to the BMX world he's the best racer around. Hello all you OST Party fans out there in radioland! Are you ready to rock?!  On this episode we're looking at the 1994 comedy AIRHEADS! Adam Sandler, Steve Buscemi and OST Party fave Brendan Fraser are The Lone Rangers, a down and out LA rock trio. In a last ditch effort to land a record deal, they take a radio station hostage and demand to have their music heard.  The movie may be a grim foreshadowing of FM rock radio's future, but the movie's a hell of a lot of fun. And the soundtrack is pretty neat too. We get a slammin' opening credits song from Motorhead and Ice T, a weird Smiths cover from Anthrax, an even weirder Van Halen cover from Four Non Blondes, and naturally, the #1 hit single from the movie's own Lone Rangers! We're ringing in the new year with a film we've been wanting to cover for a long time. It's the 1978 cult film FM, about a Los Angeles radio station fighting back against The Man with some of the coolest rock jams of the 70s. Or at least, that's what the movie is supposed to be about. Mostly it's an excuse for Martin Mull to ham things up while they shoot a Linda Ronstadt concert. And maybe we'll get celebrity cameos from Tom Petty and REO Speedwagon along the way. It's barely a movie, and not even a good one at that. Really though, FM is more famous for its soundtrack album, which is absolutely STACKED with some of the top rock hits of the era. We get two cuts from Steely Dan, including that excellent title track, as well as songs from Bob Seger, Boston, Foreigner, Boz Scaggs, and a whooole lot more! This week we mourn the passing of the incomparable Paul Reubens. His most famous creation, Pee-wee Herman, taught kids of all stripes that there's beauty in the weird and kitschy parts of the world, and that just because we grow up doesn't mean we have to stop being silly. And throughout his career, Reubens incorporated lots of music into the Pee-wee persona. So on this episode we'll take you through the musical history of Pee-wee Herman. We'll start with his 1981 stage show, dig into his three feature films, and highlight some of the strange places Pee-wee has popped up along the way. On this episode we celebrate the 30th anniversary of Coneheads! Wayne's World proved there was a market for SNL comedies in the 90s, so naturally here's a movie based on the Coneheads, space aliens from the planet Remulak just trying to fit in among regular humans. It's basically an excuse for Dan Aykroyd to be a big weirdo for 90 minutes. And the soundtrack is equally weird. We've got a handful of really great, classic tracks (including an inexplicable hit single from the Red Hot Chili Peppers), a couple of really great cover songs, as well as one of the worst cover songs we have ever covered on this show. This podcast has been overrun by gremlins! We were supposed to do a Thanksgiving episode on Planes Trains & Automobiles, but the powers that be said, "No, you're doing Gremlins." The story of The Only Good Cop In England solving a string of murders in the small village of Sandford finds Wright leaning heavily on classic rock tunes from every era. The film is an absolute riot, but the soundtrack is equally impressive. Sporting tracks from classic acts The Kinks, The Troggs, and The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, but also more modern artists such as The Fratellis, Supergrass and Eels. Only 90s Kids may remember the phenomenon known as Dinosaurs, an ABC sitcom that ran from 1991 to 1995 and followed the adventures of dinosaur Earl Sinclair and his prehistoric family. Produced by the Jim Henson company, Dinosaurs was not only a marvel of live-action puppetry, but also just some damn funny television. And in 1992, they produced the album "Big Songs". You'd think this would be a compilation of songs from the show, right? Wrong! This album features twelve tracks recorded by the show's cast exclusively for the album. Loosely based on "The Odyssey", Joel and Ethan Coen pulled together an all-star lineup of country musicians to score this wacky road trip through Depression-era Mississippi. The film is a hoot, but the soundtrack was a sensation. The album hit #1 on the charts over a year after its release, and went on to sell 8 million copies. "I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow" and "O Death" won all the awards, but the real standouts on this album come from Allison Krauss, Gillian Welch, The Whites, and more! This week's podcast is all about Vegas, baby! Well...not exactly. It's all about Swingers, which spends a grand total of 15 minutes in Las Vegas. The rest is all about idealizing modern notions of coolness all set to a soundtrack of swing and lounge revival goodness. Swingers was one of the pillars of the mid-90s indie film boom, and also a signpost for the toxic masculinity of the era. This week marks the 30th anniversary of Wayne's World! Not only was this movie spun off from the wildly popular sketches on Saturday Night Live, but Wayne's World was instrumental in reviving Queen's popularity with its iconic "Bohemian Rhapsody" sequence. It hit #1 on the Billboard charts for two straight weeks. It had video games, board games, halloween costumes, and even a roller coaster!  But for as big a deal as Wayne's World was, the soundtrack kinda fumbles the ball. We've got Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", naturally, but aside from the requisite Alice Cooper and Jimi Hendrix tracks, there's very little to recommend here. The gang returns to fight an evil spirit trapped in a painting who wants to kidnap and inhabit a baby on New Year's Eve. It's an extremely silly film, but the soundtrack is almost wall to wall bangers! New Jack Swing was on the rise in a big way in 1989, and bolstered by singles from Bobby Brown and Run DMC, this soundtrack was one of the breakout hits of that summer. In addition, we get tracks from New Edition, Doug E. Fresh, Glenn Frey, and the requisite Oingo Boingo cut. And, for some reason, they dug up an Elton John B-side to fill out the album. Yabba Dabba Doo! We couldn't let the summer end without covering a ridiculous summer blockbuster, and The Flintstones is most certainly that. The Steven Spielberg-produced, live-action adaptation of the 60s cartoon has to be seen to be believed. It's got gaudy caveman sets and costumes, John Goodman hamming it up as Fred Flintstone, and a wild soundtrack... Good lord, the soundtrack. One half of this album features awkward attempts at caveman humor by the likes of The B(C)-52s, Big Audio Dynamite, and Us3. The other half is a bizarre collection of Flintstones novelty songs that predate the movie. No movie put a stamp on the mid-90s quite like Amy Heckerling's Clueless. Loosely adapted from Jane Austen's "Emma", Clueless follows a year in the life of Beverly Hills teen Cher as she plays matchmaker to teacher and student alike (but not, like, at the same time). And the soundtrack is the rare album that actually helps tell the story. With tracks from 90s mainstays Luscious Jackson, Coolio, Cracker, Smoking Popes and more, the Clueless soundtrack is full of angst, social satire, and just some really solid tunes. Also in this episode, we encounter more 90s glam rock covers, Libby reminisces about the clothes that got away, and we fall backwards into a new name for ska! We've been threatening to do this for a while, and now it's finally here. This week we're discussing the soundtrack to 2000's Me, Myself & Irene. If you're not familiar, it's the film that closed out Jim Carrey's run of blockbuster 90s comedies with a resounding thud. Carrey plays Charlie, a mild-mannered cop with a split personality. He also plays Hank, Charlie's deranged alter ego. Renee Zellweger is here as well. The rest really isn't important. And the soundtrack is equally split down the middle. Half the album's songs are your usual suspects of late-90s radio rock staples. The other half is a bizarre collection of Steely Dan songs covered by modern artists such as Wilco, Ivy, Ben Folds Five, and Smash Mouth. Yes, Smash Mouth is back and they're doing Steely Dan. Happy Halloween, everybody! It's time to party down with another one of Libby's favorite wackadoo cult classics. It's Hobgoblins! It's a film that looks an awful lot like Gremlins or Critters, but has its own set of tricks up its sleeve. Famously one of the worst films ever covered on "Mystery Science Theater 3000", Hobgoblins features a soundtrack by post-punk band The Fontanelles. The band also appears in the film, playing the song "Kiss Kicker 99" to a room of roughly six people. In this episode we break down the Fontanelles' soundtrack, talk about some of our favorite MST3K bits, and ponder whether or not Hobgoblins inspired some classic 90s cartoons. Kiefer Sutherland and his gang of bleach blonde vampires seduce moody teen Jason Patric to their flock, while the latter's younger brother Corey Haim teams up with vampire hunter Corey Feldman to destroy them. It's all very silly, and the soundtrack is no different. This one introduces some future goth staples, and also brings us Echo and the Bunnymen covering The Doors, as well as Roger Daltrey covering Elton John. People are strange, and so is this album. We return to the world of Kevin Smith this week with the soundtrack to 2001's Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back! In Jay and Silent Bob's "final" adventure, Smith called in all his favors and created a madcap Hollywood sendup featuring dozens of celebrity cameos, movie parodies and insults hurled directly at the audience. This movie came out right before 9/11, and boy can you feel it. The soundtrack features 90s holdovers like Marcy Playground and Stroke 9, 80s hits from Bon Jovi, Run DMC and Morris Day & The Time, and some more modern songs that, quite frankly, have aged like shit. If you're like Libby, you look back on these shenanigans fondly. And if you're anything like Joe, you look back at this and die of embarrassment. Either way, you're in for a wild ride. The result is a wild pastiche of Vaudeville, stagecraft, animation and big band music produced completely outside the realms of studio filmmaking and any semblance of good taste. It's a film that pushes viewers to the breakpoint and offers so much off-the-wall creativity, it's almost unreal. Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo, an Englishman and a Colombian, play Italian brothers chasing a kidnapped princess into a dimension where an industrialist dinosaur-man played by Dennis Hopper rules his city with an iron fist. All of this is somehow based on a video game. As for the soundtrack we've got a would-be hit single from Roxette, random cuts from Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, Joe Satriani and Queen, and George Clinton delivers the grandest, goofiest cover of "Walk The Dinosaur" you'll ever need. On this episode of The O/S/T Party, we discuss THE CROW, the 1994 dark comic fantasy that served as Brandon Lee's tragic swansong, and launched the goth phase for a million terrible 90s kids. This soundtrack was one of the surprise hits of the mid-90s, mostly remembered now for Nine Inch Nails covering Joy Division, a pretty decent soundtrack cut from The Cure, and another appearance from our pals My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult! But did you know this soundtrack also features Rage Against the Machine? Or Rollins Band? Or Pantera? Or Violent Femmes? Why, you ask? Well, we don't really address it in this episode, but it just goes to show how many heavy hitters they managed to cram onto one disc. Riddle me this, riddle me that, how many tunes were inspired by the Bat?This edition of The O/S/T Party finds Libby & Joe diving into the mid-90s superhero muck that is Batman Forever. It's a neon dayglo nightmare, and the soundtrack is no different, full of smooth R&B, college rock leftovers and one or two of the best songs of the 90s. Not only did this album spawn SIX. RADIO. SINGLES. ("Kiss From a Rose", anyone?) It also sold millions of copies, would be nominated for, win AND lose Grammy awards, and inspired one of the most baffling animated music videos of all time. Also in this episode, we discuss middle-aged teenager Dick Grayson, how and why this film became The Jim Carrey Show, Tommy Lee Jones' immortal putdown, and just the general rock opera-ness of the whole production.
