The Promised Land | A Manchester United Podcast

Manchester United's difficult start to the season continues after a hugely disappointing 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford, raising further questions about Michael Carrick's future. Despite taking the lead through Bryan Mbeumo and playing against ten men following Rodrigo Bentancur's dismissal, United conceded a late equaliser to Dominic Solanke and dropped another two points. But the result is only part of the problem. United's lack of intensity, urgency and attacking cohesion remains a major concern, with Spurs arguably the better side for much of the contest. Why are United struggling to impose themselves on matches? Is Carrick getting enough from his players, and how much responsibility should he take for the team's performances? With just six points from six Premier League games, is his position now becoming genuinely vulnerable? Jamie Bajwa from Sub Prime Goals returns to discuss Manchester United’s latest financial results, the future of Old Trafford and a potentially significant route towards finally removing the club’s historic leveraged buyout debt - which has been suggested as a path in the club's recent releases. Could stadium financing eventually provide the opportunity for INEOS to take majority control, refinance the debt away from Manchester United and increase the club’s capacity to fund a new stadium? The new loan agreement, the importance of 2029 and the different ways a multi-billion-pound stadium project could be financed are all explained. There’s also discussion of what United’s latest accounts tell us about the health of the club, the importance of Champions League football and INEOS’ own financial position. Plus, thoughts on the extraordinary Manchester City financial case and the potential consequences following the independent Commission’s findings. Manchester City have been found guilty of serious breaches of the Premier League's financial rules — so what should happen to them now? Harry Symeou from the Chronicles of a Gooner joins the show to break down the Premier League's extraordinary statement and the findings of the independent commission, including the numbers behind City's "sham" sponsorship arrangements and the scale of the financial advantage the Commission says they obtained. There's also discussion of whether expulsion from the Premier League now has to be seriously considered, whether City should even be allowed to continue competing while sanctions and an appeal remain outstanding, and what their spending since the period covered by the charges tells us — if anything. Attention also turns to reports that City learned of the Commission's findings in July, the reaction from City supporters, Ferran Soriano's response and Manchester City's continued insistence that they are innocent and will ultimately be vindicated. Plus: were football's financial rules fundamentally unfair in the first place, how differently could José Mourinho's career have been viewed without City's rise, and just how severe could the consequences now become? City say the Commission's decision contains material errors of law, principle and fact and have confirmed their intention to appeal. But they find themselves in a mess that could drag on for years and have the most serious consequences we've ever seen. Manchester City have been found guilty on 114 Premier League charges — so it's time for a slightly different State of Play. Adam Joseph joins to assess where City stand following the verdict, what it means for the club's future and whether the way their achievements are viewed has now changed permanently...as if they weren't already under question. Attention also turns to the potential punishment if City's appeal fails. What would actually constitute a proportionate sporting sanction? Is relegation enough? Should titles be stripped? And what could compensation claims from United and other clubs ultimately look like? But this is about more than punishment. What does the verdict mean for Pep Guardiola's legacy, City's players, recruitment and future? How much responsibility should fall on the Premier League for allowing the situation to drag on for so long? And could this case fundamentally change the way English football is governed? Manchester City have, per David Ornstein's report, been found guilty of the vast majority of the Premier League charges against them — a landmark moment in a case that has hung over English football for years. This episode looks at what City have been found guilty of, what the findings actually mean and why the outcome feels like vindication after years of questioning the legitimacy and significance of their success. There's also a personal reflection on why City's dominance has always felt hollow, why this case is about far more than simply disliking a rival, and how the verdict could permanently change the way this era of English football is remembered. Attention then turns to punishment if the findings survive City's appeal. Would a fine or conventional points deduction come close to being sufficient? Should relegation be the minimum consequence — or does wrongdoing on this scale warrant expulsion and sporting sanctions lasting multiple seasons? Finally, what could all of this mean for Manchester United and other affected clubs? Should City's trophies be stripped or reallocated? Could clubs pursue compensation for lost prize money and opportunities? And can football ever truly repair the consequences of rules being broken over such a long period? The appeal process means the story is not over. But after years of allegations, investigations and arguments, English football has reached a defining moment. Michael Carrick's Manchester United have five points from their opening five Premier League games and performances have fallen below expectations — so how much responsibility should fall on the coach considering all the other factors hanging over the club? Adam Joseph joins for this episode and the guys take a closer look at Carrick's start to the season - focusing on the areas where United simply haven't delivered: in both boxes, in their defensive structure, intensity, game management and more. There's discussion on how much this falls on the coaches, how much is on the players, and how long everyone has to turn this around and how they can do it before serious decisions are made on another coach in the United hot seat. Manchester United's start to the season has fallen well below expectations — so where does that leave Michael Carrick and his team? Adam Joseph joins for the latest Man Utd State of Play to take stock after the draw at Fulham and assess whether pre-season expectations for this team were too high or remain realistic despite performances and results. There's a wider look at United's performances and playing style, what Carrick is trying to build, what the biggest issues on pitch are and which problems should genuinely concern supporters. Has the start changed the view of United's summer transfer business or made the doubters completely right? How much patience will remain if things stay the same? Man Utd drew 1-1 with Fulham on Sunday to confirm their poor start to the season and go into the international break with five points from five games. Scott Saunders shares his reaction to the performance and the result and what's going wrong at United (again) and explains why the belief is stronger at the moment that things are on a negative path again than likely to turn around. Manchester United are out of the Carabao Cup after throwing away a two-goal lead in a damaging defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford. United started well, with Shea Lacey enjoying his big moment and Mason Mount making it 2-0, but what followed was another alarming collapse as Brighton took control of the game and exposed familiar problems in Michael Carrick’s side. This episode looks at where it went wrong, the mistakes that changed the game, United’s build-up and whether individual errors are masking deeper coaching and structural issues. There are also growing questions around the fitness and intensity of the team, particularly when compared to a Brighton side that once again looked better organised and better coached. Does the standard expected of this United team now need reassessing? Or are the same root problems that have undermined previous managers simply resurfacing again and causing them to fall short? Carrick looked shellshocked by the end. United need answers quickly — the question is whether he has them. JJ Gabriel wants to leave Manchester United with immediate effect, bringing his future at the club into serious doubt just weeks before his 16th birthday. One of the most highly-rated young players in United's academy, Gabriel has already broken records at youth level and scored a UEFA Youth League hat-trick last week. He had also been in contention for a first-team opportunity on Wednesday night — so why does he now want out? This episode breaks down what is known about the situation, Gabriel's reported frustration over his pathway towards the first team, the significance of his age and why his eligibility to potentially move abroad could become crucial. There's also a look at where the responsibility lies. Could United have done more to keep him happy? Is it reasonable to expect significant first-team football at just 15? And should the club trust its coaches' judgement over when even an exceptional academy player is physically ready for senior football? Plus, with some of Europe's biggest clubs interested, what would actually be the best next step for Gabriel's career? Losing a talent of this level would undoubtedly be a major blow — but the grass isn't always greener for young players leaving in search of a faster route to the top. How damaging is United’s start to the season, and how much responsibility should fall on Michael Carrick, the players and the club’s summer recruitment? There’s also a wider look at the issues beginning to emerge in Carrick’s team, what should genuinely concern United supporters and which problems may simply require patience as a new-look squad settles. Manchester United improved their squad significantly over the summer — but after all the talk of further additions, why didn't the club spend more before the transfer window closed? Jamie Bajwa joins TPL to look at the financial and strategic reasons behind United's summer spending, the budget available to the club and why there was ultimately a limit to how far the rebuild could go in one window. There's also a look at the decisions United made over where to allocate their money, the importance of player sales, cash considerations, and whether holding money back rather than forcing another deal could prove to be the right long-term decision. After strengthening key areas but leaving some obvious gaps in the squad, was this simply the reality of United's financial position — or should the club have found a way to do more? Manchester United's summer transfer window is over — so did the club actually do enough? Adam Joseph joins for a full review of United's summer business, looking back at what the squad needed when the window opened, how expectations changed and whether the club ultimately stopped short of completing the job they set out to do. There's a major focus on the midfield overhaul and how much United have improved in the middle of the pitch, before assessing the positions that remain unresolved and whether Michael Carrick has been left short heading into a season of Premier League and Champions League football. Also discussed: United's struggles selling players, the briefings that emerged after the window closed, the club's changing transfer targets and what the summer tells us about the wider recruitment strategy. Finally, with the squad now locked in, have expectations for Carrick and Manchester United changed? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The final hours of the transfer window saw Man Utd potentially make a signing and an offload, only for moves for Joshua Zirkzee to Everton and Rayan Ait-Nouri to Man Utd to be extinguished before they even started. Adam Joseph joins Scott Saunders to reflect on the final hours of the transfer window, if those moves would have made sense, and deadline day on the whole - with feelings on how deadline day mapped out high on the agenda. Manchester United's transfer window is officially closed — and deadline day is passing without a single new arrival at Old Trafford. Despite links with Louis Page and Jorge Salinas, United have opted against making a late addition, while Harry Amass and Joshua Zirkzee are both staying at the club. There is also no additional striker arriving to strengthen Michael Carrick's attacking options and left back COULD be a HUGE problem. Scott Saunders reacts. Manchester United responded to their opening-day defeat in emphatic fashion, beating Ipswich 5-2 at Old Trafford — but how much did the performance actually tell us about where Michael Carrick’s team are? Adam Joseph joins for the latest Man Utd State of Play to assess the win, the confidence and resilience shown after falling behind, and another extraordinary performance from Bruno Fernandes after his hat-trick and assist. There’s also a big discussion on Kobbie Mainoo after an outstanding return to the starting XI, with Carrick describing his performance as “immense” and saying he underpinned United’s display. Plus, with the transfer window entering its final days, attention turns to the squad itself: remaining business, possible departures and whether United still need defensive reinforcements at left-back or centre-back. A 5-2 win looks great — but is this squad actually good enough for the season ahead? Manchester United's Champions League opponents are confirmed — and on first inspection, it's a draw United should be pretty happy with. This episode is the full reaction to the UCL draw, including the biggest tests against Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid, the games United should be expecting to win and what the schedule could mean for Michael Carrick's side. There's also a look back at some rather unpleasant recent memories against several of United's opponents, the trips to look forward to and an early assessment of how many points United should be targeting. Bruno Fernandes has been named PFA Players' Player of the Year after an extraordinary season for Manchester United — completing a clean sweep of the major individual awards after being voted the Premier League's best player by his fellow professionals. And yet, just days earlier, Bruno found himself at the centre of criticism following United's opening defeat at Hull, with Paul Scholes even suggesting the captain should have kept quiet after the game and social media swirling with criticism for the United captain. Scott Saunders looks into why the debate around Fernandes continues despite the numbers, performances and recognition from his peers, offers thoughts on the criticism since and while....while some of it might be legitimate concern, it is not smart to write Bruno off and demand his sale at this precise moment. There's also discussion of the Premier League's potential shift towards lower-possession football, and Bruno's crucial role within it - even in the face of the criticism he's currently getting. Manchester United's left-back search continues — but what is the plan for the position before the transfer window closes? This episode looks at the latest options being discussed, including the possibility of Alejandro Balde arriving on loan from Barcelona and continued interest in Jorge Salinas. If Lewis Hall remains United's preferred long-term target, could a short-term solution this summer allow the club to go back for him next year? There's also discussion of Luke Shaw's revealing comments after the 2-0 defeat at Hull, the concerns surrounding United's defensive depth and whether centre-back could become another position that needs addressing over the course of the season. With the midfield rebuild taking shape, attention now turns to the defence — and how United balance solving immediate problems with sticking to their longer-term recruitment plan. But after discussing why Rashford deserves another opportunity at United, the reaction has been... mixed. This episode is largely about that debate. The biggest comments and arguments from TPL listeners are addressed, including concerns over Rashford's attitude, work rate and previous performances. Having revisited Marcus Rashford's interview from last year, I came away with a different perspective. Rather than focusing on individual moments or performances, this episode looks at what Rashford had to say about Manchester United's lack of long-term direction, constant managerial changes and the absence of a clear footballing identity. Many of the frustrations he described were shared by supporters at the time, but with another year having passed—and significant cultural changes taking place under the current football leadership—is it time to reassess Rashford's situation? I discuss where I think he was right, where I disagree, why the cultural reset at Manchester United has been so important, and what Rashford would have to prove if he is to earn another opportunity at the club. This isn't about ignoring the criticisms of his performances or attitude. It's about asking whether there is now a genuine opportunity for Marcus Rashford to come back into a very different Manchester United. Learn more about your ad choices. So, what if Man Utd don't do anything else this summer? What if they actually do keep Mason Mount as the third midfielder and not sign another one? What if Lewis Hall is too expensive and they don't sign a left back? Scott Saunders addresses the latest doomerisms around Man Utd's transfer window and lack of recent activity. For over a decade, Manchester United haven't just been missing one or two players – they've been battling deeper structural problems that have repeatedly held the club back. In this episode, Adam Joseph joins the podcast to assess the biggest long-term issues that have defined United since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, and whether INEOS and the current football leadership are finally fixing them. The discussion covers culture, recruitment, financial discipline, the wage structure, midfield balance, athleticism, leadership, squad depth, player sales, football identity and more, with each area assessed based on how much progress has actually been made. Rather than focusing on one transfer or one result, this is a broader look at where Manchester United really are as a football club—and whether the foundations are finally being put in place to compete for major honours again. Manchester United have made progress this summer, but the squad still does not look complete. In this episode, Scott is joined by Adam Joseph to go position by position through the depth chart, looking at where United are now covered, where the squad still looks light, and what still needs to happen before the window can really be considered a success. There is discussion on the left-back situation, whether another addition is needed there, and why centre-midfield still feels like the one area that demands another major signing. The conversation turns into a passionate case for Carlos Baleba, why his profile makes so much sense, and why United still need a defensive, athletic, ground-covering midfielder who can win the ball back, carry it, and pass it. The episode also looks at how complete the squad really is, what the remaining priorities should be, and why one more big midfield move could make a huge difference to United’s ceiling this season. Ederson’s move to Manchester United is off (WE THINK?!) after the midfielder failed his medical, forcing the club back into the market at a key stage of the summer. This episode reacts to the collapse of the deal, the odd reporting around it, what it means for United’s midfield plans, and whether Manu Kone could now emerge as the next serious option. There is also discussion on how significant a setback this is, whether United’s recruitment team will have to move quickly again, and what the situation says about the wider shape of the club’s midfield rebuild. Manchester United have now confirmed the proposed location of a new 100,000-seat stadium as part of a huge wider regeneration project around Old Trafford. But beyond the headlines, the biggest question is the obvious one: how exactly is this going to be paid for? In this episode, Scott is joined by Jamie Bajwa of Sub Prime Goals to break down the latest stadium announcement, the wider Trafford Wharfside masterplan, and the financial reality behind a project of this scale. There is discussion on the difference between bad debt and good debt, the revenue potential of a new stadium complex, and the funding options available to United as the club looks to build for the long term. The episode also looks at whether United can realistically finance a new stadium and still remain competitive on the pitch, why naming rights and other revenue streams matter so much, and how all of this connects back to INEOS’ current transfer strategy and financial restraint. Topics include the confirmed location of the new stadium, the scale of the wider regeneration plans, how the project could be financed, what the earning potential might be, and what it all means for Manchester United’s football future. Andrey Santos’ move to Manchester United is agreed, with a £48m fee plus £2m in achievable add-ons, and the deal now moving quickly towards completion. This episode reacts to the signing, why it could be a smart piece of business, how Santos may fit into United’s midfield, and why there is real upside in one of the more buyable high-potential players on the market. There is also discussion on what Santos adds to a young core that already includes Kobbie Mainoo, Leny Yoro, Ayden Heaven, Patrick Dorgu, Benjamin Sesko, Amad and Senne Lammens, and whether that group can realistically mature into a title-winning side by 2028. The episode also covers Aurelien Tchouameni signing a new contract at Real Madrid, why that deal was never truly workable once the wage demands became clear, and what that means for Manchester United’s need for senior midfield experience. There is also an update on Ederson, with questions around the timing and language surrounding his medical, and whether United’s midfield plans may now be shifting again after missing out on both Santos and Tchouameni alternatives. Chelsea's Andrey Santos has emerged as the latest name linked with a move to Manchester United. Scott Saunders offers his initial reaction and explains why this move - while it can't be the MAIN midfield move of the summer - makes a lot of sense at the right price, which appears far more reasonable than plenty of others out there. There's a dive into some background on Santos and an explanation around why shopping in the "non hyped" market may make sense at this moment in time. Scott Saunders and Adam Joseph assess Man Utd's lack of transfer activity in the window so far and discuss how many signings we can realistically expect United to make this summer. Spurs have unveiled Matheus Fernandes as a new signing and Sandro Tonali is soon to follow - and BOTH of those players have been linked extensively with Manchester United. So where do United turn next? Scott Saunders outlines his thinking on the state of the transfer window at present and why Aurelien Tchouameni is pivotal to United's success this summer, and why his signing is now so important. Marcus Rashford returning to Manchester United is becoming a REAL possibility. This episode of TPL looks at the reports around Rashford’s future, the new meeting that took place and all parties being open to reintegration. Host Scott Saunders remembers the past, and outlines the only three conditions under which a return to Old Trafford would be acceptable in his eyes. There is discussion on Rashford’s role in the squad, the attitude and application that would need to change behind the scenes, and whether a new contract on reduced terms would be the only realistic way to bring the situation back into line with Manchester United’s new wage structure. There is also a look at why United should not entertain another loan, why a rotation role may now be the only serious level available to Rashford at a top club, and how all of this affects the wider squad build — especially on the left side and in midfield. Elliot Anderson was never a realistic signing for Manchester United in the end, and the numbers now being talked about only reinforce that. This episode looks at why United were never getting close to Manchester City in that race, why the deal never really made sense, and what Anderson’s move now does to the wider midfield market. There is also discussion on Matheus Fernandes, why Manchester United may still have a real chance if the player prefers Old Trafford, why Spurs’ moves in the market are raising questions, and whether United could still end up doing both Aurelien Tchouameni and Fernandes as part of a bigger midfield rebuild. In a crusade against the nonsense you see online this week, Scott Saunders comes to TPL with the latest on Matheus Fernandes and a reminder of an interview Man Utd CEO Omar Berrada gave....just three weeks ago. Berrada sat down with Andy Mitten and gave fans the answers they're looking for for scenarios that are literally playing out as we speak with United's most recent transfer target. There's a reminder on the club's approach to overspending, being responsible, their ambitions to win the title, and how they won't let agents dictate the market to them beyond reason any more. Go and check out the excellent interview on United's 'Inside Carrington' podcast on audio platforms and YouTube, posted in early June, if you've not seen it already. Manchester United’s midfield plans remain fluid, and one big question is whether Aurelien Tchouameni’s potential availability is affecting the club’s move for Mateus Fernandes. This episode looks at why United may be hesitating, how the market around Fernandes has changed, and whether waiting could make more sense than rushing into an expensive deal. There is also discussion on why Fernandes’ price and the growing competition for him may be changing the appeal of the move, what Tchouameni would bring as a more senior midfield option, and how United’s wider midfield priority list could still shift again before the end of the summer. The latest has dropped on West Ham's potential sale of Matheus Fernandes amid Spurs and Man Utd's interest, and indications are that the RELEGATED club want to START THE BIDDING at £85m - a higher price than we've heard before! Scott Saunders runs through the report from Fabrizio Romano, discusses its legitimacy, the social media hysteria around the deal, and what value means to Manchester United a very important summer. The Promised Land Podcast is back! After an unintended two week break, Scott Saunders returns to talk about Manchester United's interest in Crysencio Summerville and explore if that is the right move for United to bolster their options on the left wing ... while also asking the question again about what happens next with Marcus Rashford. Rashford scored for England against Croatia and is now unlikely to return to Barcelona following the expiration of his loan and the option to buy in the deal.
