Retired agent and FBI-certified polygraph examiner George Olivo reviews his polygraph examination of Korina Flores Sanchez, who was suspected of murdering her live-in boyfriend. It was one of the first high-stakes examinations George conducted as a brand-new polygrapher. George is also interviewed about the truths and untruths surrounding polygraphs, what true crime media often gets wrong about polygraphs, and his TV appearance on another season of Lie Detector: Truth or Deception, which premieres on A&E and Hulu on March 12 and 19. George served in the FBI for 22 years. Retired agent Jerry Spurgers reviews his investigation of the mysterious disappearance of federal witness Susan Cooper from Malvern, Arkansas. The case involved drug conspiracy, witness intimidation, and murder. Jerry investigated the case with a team of local officers, sheriff's deputies, and an intelligence analyst by using traditional police skills and new technologies. As a former member of the Little Rock Division's Evidence Response Team and an experienced death investigator, he also reviews the steps taken to collect evidence at a murder or accidental death. Jerry is the author of Murder at Midnight: The FBI's Battle with Violence and Drugs in a Small Southern Town, a true crime book about the investigation. He served in the FBI for 24 years.

Retired agent Phil Andrew shares how his experience surviving one of the nation's first school shootings when he was a twenty-year-old college student impacted his FBI career as a hostage negotiator. Phil reviews a kidnapping case where he negotiated with a member of the terrorist organization behind the Mumbai attacks and a case where he attempted to broker the release of New York Times reporter David Rohde, who was being held captive for ransom by the Taliban in Afghanistan. These case reviews are examples of how Phil turned tragedy into purpose, dedicating his life to keeping communities safe. Phil served in the FBI for 21 years. He is currently a 2026 candidate for the United States Congress in Illinois's 9th Congressional District.

Retired agent Barry Black reviews two bombing cases he worked as a special agent bomb tech (SABT) assigned to the Oklahoma City Division. The first case covers the detonation of a bomb at a University of Oklahoma football game in 2005, where the subject used a type of homemade explosive that had only been used by international terrorists. The second is an undercover investigation code-named Operation Mischief Mayhem Barry worked just before he retired, where he thwarted the subject's plan to build and deploy a 1000-pound device similar to the one Timothy McVeigh used to bomb the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. These cases are included in Barry's new book, Hazardous Devices: Memoir of an FBI Bomb Technician, Accountant, and Sniper. He served in the FBI for 31 years.

Retired agents Bob Anderson and Carl Larsen review the major role Lou Peters, the owner of a Cadillac dealership in Lodi, California, played in the takedown of mobster Joseph Bonanno, Sr. In 1977, Bonanno had a mob associate approach Lou Peters with an offer to buy his Cadillac dealership to launder illegal funds. Peters instead met with Bob Anderson, who was assigned the case. Carl Larsen was the technical agent who wired Lou and his undercover apartment for sound. We also invited Lou's daughter, Lori Peters, to review the case with us. She's the author of God, the Mafia, My Dad, and Me.

Bob and Carl joined the FBI in the 1960s. In recognition of Lou Peters' contribution to this case, the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI annually presents the Louis E. Peters Memorial Award to private citizens who selflessly dedicate their time and service to assist the FBI in uncovering wrongdoing.

Retired agent Harry Samit reviews his investigation of Zacarias Moussaoui. Harry was assigned the case after the FBI's Minneapolis Division had been contacted by a flight school that reported its suspicions about Moussaoui, who had paid $8,000 in cash for a flight simulator course to fly a commercial Boeing 747 aircraft even though he had no background in aviation. Harry's investigation of Moussaoui as a potential threat to commit a terrorist act was stymied by program managers at FBI Headquarters. Moussaoui was later charged, convicted, and sentenced to life in prison as a co-conspirator of the September 11 terrorist attacks. He provides his thoughts on whether Moussaoui was going to be al-Qaeda's "20th hijacker," assigned to crash a plane into the White House. Harry is the author of The Zacarias Moussaoui Matter: The Arrest and Trial of a 9/11 Al Qaeda Operative. Harry Samit served in the FBI for 21-years. Retired FBI agent Michael Clarke and retired DEA agent Jack McFarland review their 2004 joint FBI and DEA investigation of "The Commission," a violent criminal gang operating in the U.S. Virgin Islands which includes St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix, whose members were convicted in federal court for racketeering, murder, and drug trafficking. The case was conducted under the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) program, the Safe Streets Task Force initiative, and the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) program. Retired agent William Peterson reviews two cases, his kidnapping investigation where two American businessmen in Kenya where held for ransom and his assistance in the capture and identification of terrorist Sajid Mir, a senior member of the Pakistan-based Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT). Mir is on the FBI Most Wanted list for his leading role in the planning, preparation, and execution of the November 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India. These were just two of the significant investigations Peterson worked during his FBI counterterrorism and international law enforcement career. He served in the FBI for 23 years.

In this encore episode of FBI Case File Review, John reviews the November 22, 1994, ambush at the DC Metro Police Headquarters where a gunman killed SAs Martha Dixon and Michael Miller, and MPD Sgt. Henry "Hank" Daly and John survived multiple gunshot wounds to the heart, liver, kidney, lung, arm and leg.

For his actions that day, he was awarded the FBI Medal of Valor and U.S. Attorney General's Award for Exceptional Heroism in recognition of exceptional acts of heroism involving the voluntary risk of personal safety and life performed in the line of duty in the face of a criminal encounter. Retired agent and former FBI art crime team leader Tim Carpenter reviews his case where 5,000 illegally collected cultural artifacts and two thousand human burial remains were seized from the Midwestern home of grave robber Don Miller. Many of the pieces in Miller's illicit collection of over 42,000 items were looted from sacred burial and cultural heritage sites around the world. Tim and his team repatriated these items of historical and cultural significance back to Native American and other indigenous communities from which they were stolen. Tim, the author of The Grave Robber, a book about the meticulous work involved in the FBI's investigation, served in the FBI for twenty years.

Retired agent Steve Conley reviews his investigation of the 18-year period in which Katrina Leung, one of the Bureau's highest-paid assets, was operated by former FBI Supervisory Special Agent (SSA) James J. Smith, known as JJ. Katrina Leung's code name was Parlor Maid. Steve's investigation determined that during the time Smith was Leung's handler, not only was she actively spying for the People's Republic of China against the United States, but they were involved in a sexual relationship. Steve received the Director's Award for his work on this espionage case. Steven Conley served in the FBI for over 24 years.

Retired agent Joe Wolfinger is interviewed about his supervision of the counterintelligence squad in Norfolk, VA and the investigation of John Walker, a retired U.S. Navy chief warrant officer and communications specialist who sold secrets about American military codes to the Soviets for nearly 20 years. Walker also recruited his friend, brother and son and together they caused extensive damage to America's national security. The John Walker spy ring has been described as the "most damaging Soviet spy ring in history. Walker pled guilty and was sentenced to life in prison.

Retired agent Dan Reilly reviews the case of Wayne "Silk" Perry, a hitman and enforcer for drug gangs operating in the early 1990s in the Washington, D.C. area. Perry claimed to have been involved in as many as 100 murders, many targeting witnesses who dared to cooperate with law enforcement. Dan Reilly helped start the FBI's Safe Streets Task Force Program. In addition to investigating violent drug gangs, Dan Reilly headed the FBI's Evidence Response Team at the Washington Field Office and provided extensive experience and training to others on crime scene examination.

Retired agent Greg Stejskal reviews the investigation of a massive marijuana criminal enterprise. Initially, a lead from the Indianapolis Division seeking assistance with a case involving a mother, Linda Leary, and her two sons, Paul and Richard Heilbrunn, who were charged with operating a marijuana smuggling and distribution enterprise, Greg Stejskal was assigned to identified and locate a co-conspirator thought to be living in the Ann Arbor, Michigan area. Only identified as "The Joker" in the 136-page federal indictment, the unknown subject had been charged with being a distributor for the Heilbrunn family marijuana operation. According to the indictment, the drug ring operated from 1975 to 1985 and it would prove to be, at the time, the biggest marijuana ring ever prosecuted by the US.

Retired agent Gina Davis, the acting supervisor of a Safe Streets Task Force operating out of Calverton, Maryland office and Maryland State Trooper and homicide detective Ted Jones, a 10-year task force member, review how the team solved a cold case murder of the execution-style shooting of three young women. The women's bodies were left in a secluded area off a rural route in Laurel, Maryland. Because the location was on federal land, the case was initially investigated by the U.S. Park Police and later assigned to the Safe Streets Taskforce. The task force was able to gather the evidence needed to charge the three men responsible for the murders.

Retired agent Phil Sena reviews the fugitive investigation of Top Ten Fugitive Ted Otsuki. In October 1987, Otsuki killed Boston police officer Roy Sergei and wounded officer Jorge Torres when they responded to a domestic disturbance call. A national manhunt to locate and capture Otsuki ensued. After he developed a crucial cooperating witness, Phil Sena, working closely with Boston and San Francisco detectives, took up the fugitive hunt in San Francisco, Texas and Guadalajara, Mexico, where Otsuki was eventually captured by Mexican Federal Judicial Police and the FBI.

Retired agent John Chesson reviews a hate crime/civil rights matter from his early days in the FBI. The case involved the investigation of six South Philadelphia men suspected of violating the civil rights of an African American woman by vandalizing the home she had just rented on their block. The case was assigned to John and his co-case agent, Christina Kibbey. Mike Kates (also spelled Cates), a wheelchair-bound man who lived on the street, agreed to become their cooperating witness and to help them gather the evidence needed to prove that damaging the house was a racially motivated scheme to make the house uninhabitable and to intimidate and discourage the woman from moving into the neighborhood. Kates courageously recorded consensually monitored conversations with the subjects of the investigation and testified as the star witness in the subsequent trials. All involved were found guilty. On October 21, 1999, FBI Director Louis Freeh awarded Mike Kates the 18th Annual "Louis E. Peters Memorial Service Award" for his selfless commitment to protect victims of crime.

Retired agent Jim Huggins reviews his investigation of FBI agent Mark Putnam, a new agent assigned to a two-man resident agency in Pikeville, Kentucky, high in Appalachian coal country. Based primarily on Huggins' ability to elicit a confession, Putnam pled guilty and was convicted of strangling is his pregnant informant, Susan Daniels Smith, in a fit of rage. Retired agent Angelo Lano reviews his role as the case agent of the FBI Watergate investigation, starting from the morning of June 17, 1972, when he received a phone call from his Bureau supervisor instructing him to report to the Watergate Complex to investigate a break-in at the Democratic National Committee Headquarters. His initial assignment was to identify the five men caught in the act and arrested by local police. However, subsequent investigation by Lano and members of his squad quickly determined that this was more than just another interstate theft of stolen property case. They learned that the intruders were connected to the committee to re-elect President Richard Nixon and the property crime case morphed into the biggest political scandal in U.S. history. Lano's investigation produced evidence of a cover-up and led to articles of impeachment being drawn up against Nixon, who resigned from office in 1974. Angelo Lano was one of several FBI agents falsely accused of being Deep Throat, a source of leaks about inside investigatory information provided to reporters at the Washington Post.

Part two of a two-part episode. Retired agent Max Noel reviews the Unabomber Terrorist Ted Kaczynski case. For 15 years, multiple agencies, including the FBI, AFT, the Postal Inspection Service and numerous state and local police departments, worked mostly independently to identified and arrest the person responsible for setting off 16 bombs throughout the United States that killed three and seriously maimed and injured several victims. Noel, who was planning to retire just prior to being hand-picked for the assignment, was selected as the investigative squad supervisor for a new task force created by then Attorney General Janet Reno and FBI Director Louie Freeh. Noel and other members of the taskforce received the Attorney General's Award for Distinguish Service for their efforts. This is part one of a two-part episode. Retired agent Max Noel reviews the Unabomber Terrorist Ted Kaczynski case. For 15 years, multiple agencies, including the FBI, AFT, the Postal Inspection Service and numerous state and local police departments, worked mostly independently to identified and arrest the person responsible for setting off 16 bombs throughout the United States that killed three and seriously maimed and injured several victims. Noel, who was planning to retire just prior to being hand-picked for the assignment, was selected as the investigative squad supervisor for a new task force created by then Attorney General Janet Reno and FBI Director Louie Freeh. Noel and other members of the taskforce received the Attorney General's Award for Distinguish Service for their efforts. Retired agent Bill Dyson reviews an international conspiracy involving the El Rukn street gang and Libyan terrorist. Bill Dyson led the Chicago Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) that developed this information and determined that members of the El Rukns were meeting with representatives of the then-hostile government of Libya led by Colonel Muammar al-Gaddafi to discuss a conspiracy to perpetrate a terrorist attack inside of the United States. The El Rukn Libyan conspiracy investigation marked the first convictions of American citizens for conspiring to commit terrorist acts in their country on behalf of a foreign government in exchange for money.

Retired agent Denise Minor reviews her extensive investigative experience working overseas, primarily in various countries in Africa and in the United States utilizing her French language skills to communicate, interpret and translate during her career. In addition to serving as the Legal Attaché or LEGAT in Rabat, Morocco, Minor was a French interpreter for the Protocol Office in support of FBI Director Louie Freeh and other FBI executives, deployed to Nairobi, Kenya to lead a small team with French language skills to conduct terrorism investigation in the Federal Islamic Republic of the Comoros Islands, deployed to Rwanda to investigate human rights violations and genocide and had numerous other assignments that took her to Yemen, Haiti and other French speaking destinations around the world.

Retired agent Myron Fuller reviews his role as the case agent and undercover agent in the case code named ABSCAM, originally initiated to investigate and penetrate White Collar Crime and Organized Crime targets in the New York area. Specifically, it was begun as an undercover operation to infiltrate the conspiracy of members of organize crime to purchase a mortgage company for fraudulent and criminal purposes. The sophisticated ABSCAM scenario included a fictitious wealthy Lebanese businessman and a $7 Million bank account. Fuller and his undercover partner, agent John Hauss, represented that they worked for a consortium of foreign banks and a Lebanese businessman who wanted to funnel millions of Middle-East money into ventures in the United States. The scenario, with the cooperation of con man Mel Weinberg, allowed for the successful conviction of organized crime figures, conmen, and ultimately, corrupt politicians.

Retired Special Agent Jim McGee reviews being a member of the FBI Hostage Rescue Team (HRT), one of the world's most elite counter-terrorism teams. McGee provides a first-hand account of his participation in the HRT's first dynamic assault mission, which resulted in the successful hostage rescue of nine. In 1991, a violent group of Cuban inmates in the Federal Correctional Institution in Talladega, Alabama, overpowered their guards and took hostages. The inmates demanded that they not to be deported back to Cuba. The HRT was called in and the hostages were rescued unharmed. For their efforts, Jim and the other HRT members were awarded the FBI Medal of Meritorious Achievement. McGee wrote a book about his experience—Phase Line Green. "Leo" Mascheroni was a theoretical physicist formerly employed at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. The FBI discovered that he had contacted a foreign country and had offered to sell his expertise and assistance to build a nuclear weapons program for that nation. Hulsey supervised the Albuquerque Division case and the agents, analysts and surveillance group members who gathered the evidence needed to prosecute the Mascheronis for espionage. They both agreed to plead guilty to illegally passing nuclear weapons program documents, which contained information derived from classified and restricted data. He was sentenced to five years and she to one year in prison.

Retired agent Richard "Dick" Marquise reviews the Pan Am Flight 103 case, where the airplane was blown out of the skies over Lockerbie, Scotland on December 21, 1988, four days before Christmas. Two hundred and seventy people were killed. Marquise was involved with the investigation from its inception and, after being named to lead the U.S. Task Force which included the FBI, Department of Justice and the Central Intelligence Agency, he managed the investigation through the return of indictments in 1991. He also played an active role through the court proceedings and in August 2001, with the successful resolution of the trial, he received the Attorney General's Award for Distinguished Service. The case code name was Scotbom. Marquise wrote Scotbom: Evidence and the Lockerbie Investigation, a non-fiction account of the international terrorism case.

Retired agent Joe Pistone is primarily known worldwide for the six years he spent infiltrating one of the New York mafia families as Donnie Brasco, his undercover alter ego. He reviews his undercover assignment, a mission so secret only a handful of agents knew what he was doing and where he was as he secretly gathered vital intelligence on the mafia and its criminal ways. The work Joe Pistone did was so incredibly dangerous that it has been documented in numerous books, documentaries, television shows, and the 1997 feature film Donnie Brasco, starring Johnny Depp and Al Pacino. After the undercover case was closed, Joe spent the rest of his Bureau career testifying in federal court all around the country for mob related trials and at the FBI Academy helping to establish the FBI's undercover program and training courses. Joe continues to travel overseas, lecturing and training law enforcement officers on how to "go undercover."

Podcast host Jerri Williams interviews one of her former subjects, Karl LNU (last name unknown - or in this case unused). Karl was investigated, charged and convicted of bribing corrupt purchasing agents to approve invoices for over-priced and inferior lighting and maintenance supplies. The scam was operated by phone. Karl, his business partner, and their employees made telemarketing calls to unsuspecting businesses throughout the United States and ripped them off with the help of their own greedy employees. Karl pled guilty and served time for fraud, but his sentence was reduced significantly based on his decision to become a cooperating witness, assisting a multi-agency Group II undercover investigation targeting the business-to-business telemarketing fraud industry in the Philadelphia area. The economic crime case resulted in 16 search warrants and 25 convictions.

Retired agent Doug Hess reviews a scheme conducted to defraud 150 coin dealers and collectors, known as numismatists, of $1 million in gold coins. During the investigation, Hess discovered a second scheme involving lead filled bars of silver that had the potential to damage the precious metals industry. Retired agent Stan Ragen reviews the important role he played in coordinating the office's extraterritorial response to crisis events overseas. Some notable examples are the El-Khobar Towers (Saudi Arabia); TWA flight 800 (NY); Egypt Air flight 990 (RI); USS Cole (Yemen); US Embassy bombings (Kenya and Tanzania); and the 9/11 attacks. He also assisted in the New York FBI response to Hurricane MARILYN (USVI); USAir flight 1549 (NY); and Hurricane SANDY (NY). Stan is also interviewed about how he and members of the New York Division's Evidence Response Team (ERT) found human remains in a collapsed building in Harlem while assisting the one of the New York Division squads on a drug case. According to Stan, the success of the ERT in this matter demonstrated what the team could do and is an example of cooperation and collaboration with NYC agencies. Prior to retiring, Stan served as a senior advisor to New York Field Office executives, developing Continuity of Operations plans and procedures.

Retired agent Toni Chrabot reviews the kidnapped grandma case involving Hedwig, "Heddy" Braun, held for a $3 million ransom on her 88th birthday. An intruder came into her home, and while her 88-year-old husband slept in another room, dragged her out of the house and put her into the trunk of her 1992 white Cadillac, and drove away. This case has a happy ending, as the FBI and law enforcement partners worked around the clock to find Heddy Braun and bring her home.

Toni is also interviewed about the Crisis Incident Response Group (CIRG) and specifically the Crisis Negotiation Unit. She served in the FBI for 24 years.

Retired agent Dell Spry was liaison to the CIA Counterintelligence Center, Counterespionage Group, and was the lead investigator for the FBI in the Aldrich Ames case. He reviews the two-year-long investigation where he, as the FBI case agent, along with a team of FBI and CIA personnel, was successful in identifying Ames as a KGB mole. Ames, who was directly responsible for the execution of several Soviet and Russian assets and operatives, was charged and convicted of espionage in 1994 and is serving a life sentence. Dell received the FBI Director's Award for Excellence in a Counterintelligence Investigation and the CIA Director's Meritorious Service Award for his efforts.

Retired Agent Vincent McNally became an instructor in Crisis (Hostage) Negotiations and Program Manager for the FBI's Critical Incident Stress Management teams at the FBI Academy. Vince reviews a hostage negotiation case in Honolulu, Hawaii, involving a workplace violence situation. Vince and I also have an open and honest conversation about the stress and trauma experienced by law enforcement personnel, how that affects their work and home life, and results in a higher incidence of suicide.

Retired agent Ed Hino, who has been retired for over 26 years, takes us back in time to the era of the G-Man and reviews two very different kidnapping cases. Retired agent Brig Barker, a combat veteran and a highly respected linguist with full fluency in Arabic and a professional working proficiency in German, reviews how he used his fluency in Arabic to investigate international matters such as the illicit trade of blood diamonds to terrorist organizations. During his deployment to Sierra Leone, he was tasked with officially opening the FBI Attaché office there and establishing liaison with local leaders and diamond merchants. He initiated the investigation into allegations that profits from the sale of blood diamonds were being funneled to terrorist organizations. Allegedly, diamonds were being used for this purpose because of the gem's high value and portability.

Retired agent Mike Rochford, as a manager at FBI Headquarters and in the field, oversaw such cases as Aldrich Ames and Earl Pitts and worked to identity six unknown subjects, government spies, the FBI and CIA, had been for years trying to uncover. One of those "unsubs" was eventually identified as FBI agent turned spy, Robert Hanssen. Mike reviews the investigation of Hanssen, who is considered the most damaging spy in FBI history. Mike recruited the source, a Russian agent of the KGB/SVR, who provided the information that led to Hanssen's identification. For this effort, Mike received the National Intelligence Medal of Achievement from the CIA.

Retired agent Shawn Henry reviews cybercrime, the global computer intrusion threat and cyber security. During his career, Shawn held multiple positions relating to cybercrime and computer intrusions, including Deputy Assistant Director and Assistant Director of the Cyber Division at FBI Headquarters; Supervisor of the FBI Cyber Crime Squad in Baltimore; and Chief of the Computer Investigations Unit within the FBI-led National Infrastructure Protection Center. He managed computer crime investigations spanning the globe, including denial-of-service attacks, bank and corporate breaches, and state-sponsored computer intrusions. When he retired from the Bureau in 2012, he was overseeing all criminal and cyber investigations worldwide as an Executive Assistant Director (EAD).

Retired agent Bea DeFazio is interviewed about working Innocent Images cases, going undercover online to catch child predators trolling in computer chat rooms to sexually exploit children and exchange images of abuse. During the last half of her agent career, she posed online as a child or teen and engaged in conversations with child predators in an attempt to gather the evidence to identify them and arrest them for exchanging child pornography—more appropriately labeled child sexual exploitation images—and/or soliciting in-person contact for sex. Bea says that this emotionally difficult work was by far the most rewarding she did for the Bureau. She also talked about her collateral duties as a member of the Evidence Response Team (ERT) and, immediately after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center Towers, working at the Fresh Kills landfill sifting through debris for evidence, personal items belonging to victims and human body parts.

Retired agent Bill Grace reviews how he conducted two high-profiled investigations involving municipal corruption at the same time, one directed at the corrupt activities of Camden, New Jersey Mayor Milton Milan and the other targeting Washington Township, New Jersey Mayor Jerry Luongo. Electronic and physical surveillance indicated that even before Milan entered municipal politics, he was associating with local drug dealers, as well as members of the Philadelphia mob and that, after being elected to City Council and as mayor, he continued those relationships. During Milan's corruption trial, the head of the Philly mob cooperated and testified against him. The Luongo case was initiated based on a questionable local land deal, but resulted in the mayor being charged with the misuse of the township's community fund. With the assistance of colleagues from the Cherry Hill Resident Agency (FBI Philadelphia Division), the IRS and the U. S. Attorney's Office, both investigations resulted in both mayors being convicted and receiving jail sentences.

Retired agent Sam Smemo is interviewed about how witnessing the devastation of 9/11, compelled him to transition from fighting the war on drugs to joining the war on terror. After hunting dangerous fugitives during the early part of his career, once onboard with the FBI, Sam worked drug cases while assigned to the Philadelphia Division. He talks about working on a drug case that inadvertently resulted in the exoneration and release from jail of an innocent man wrongly accused of shooting a child during a drive by shooting. Identifying and bringing the real culprit to justice was a highlight of his career. But after 9/11, Sam requested to be transferred to work terrorism cases. He tells us about working on an extraterritorial case wherein the FBI and the American government desperately attempted to locate and rescue a U.S. citizen kidnapped in Saudi Arabia. Tragically, the businessman was executed by an Al Qaeda terrorist organization operating in the Arabian Peninsula.

This is the second half of a two-part episode with former FBI agent Terry Hake. Terry continues his account of working undercover as a crooked defense attorney in the largest public corruption investigation in America. When the investigation—code named Operation Greylord—was initiated, Terry was a young Assistant State's Attorney fed up with corruption in the Cook County, Illinois court system. During the investigation, he was hired by the FBI, first as a project development specialist and then as a special agent. He wore a concealed recording device for three-and-a-half years, fully aware that he could have been jeopardizing his reputation and law career in doing so. At the conclusion of the undercover operation, Terry testified in 23 trials over a 10-year period and eighty-three judges, lawyers, court personnel and policeman were convicted for accepting bribes to fix court cases.

In this episode, Terry also explains why, after being an employee for only seven years, he resigned from the FBI and instead continued his 23-year career in federal law enforcement at several other non-Bureau agencies.

Retired agent Cary Thornton reviews an undercover sting and insurance fraud investigation he worked in Detroit for nearly three years where he and two other undercover FBI agents played the roles of owners and operators of an auto wrecking company willing to dispose of cars for cash so the vehicle owners could file fraudulent insurance claims. The Bureau gave the case the code name Operation Steamclean, which incorporated the term, steaming, slang used to describe dumping a vehicle for the insurance payoff. The case resulted in over 50 indictments charging individuals with fraudulent claims exceeding $100 million.

Retired Special Agent Jesse Coleman reviews the two-year period he went undercover as a drug dealer selling cocaine and heroin to made members of the Sicilian mob. During the undercover investigation, he secretly recorded over 200 conversations between him and the subjects. Jesse's efforts resulted in the arrest and conviction of 20 members of the mob family operating in the U.S., in addition to the head of the family who lived in Sicily, Italy. Jesse was awarded the Justice Department's Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Agent of the Year in 1991 for his undercover role in this investigation. He spent most of his career working drug investigations targeting organized crime figures and pursuing high-profile, violent drug gang members.

Retired Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) John Cosenza reviews how extraterritorial jurisdiction authorizes the FBI to investigate crimes against Americans on foreign soil, such as murders and kidnappings, if the crimes were based on an act of terrorism. These extraterritorial jurisdiction and counterterrorism cases took John around the world to numerous countries and international venues. He talks about one case involving a Tunisian operative and a European terrorist cell that he worked out of Milan while assigned as the Assistant Legal Attaché (ALAT) in Italy. This case was unique in that it was worked jointly between the FBI and the Italian National Police, with assistance from NCIS. The successful investigation resulted in charges of conspiracy, arms and explosive trafficking, and the use of fraudulent documents.

Retired Special Agent in Charge Wayne Davis, one of the first African American special agents to attend the FBI Academy and meet all standard special agent qualifications, provides a fascinating personal and historical account of diversity in the FBI and his private meeting with Director J. Edgar Hoover in 1965, at which time the Director Hoover expressed his views about Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights Movement. Wayne Davis served 25 years with the FBI. Known officially as COLLARBOMB, the case involves a pizza deliveryman who robbed a bank with a time bomb locked around his neck. It took Jerry and his partners from AFT and the Erie Police Department several years to unravel the complicated plot and to discover there were more dead bodies involved.

Retired agent Gerry Downes worked in the FBI's Child Abduction and Serial Killer Unit (now known as the BAU) for 11 years. He reviews the time he traveled with several team members to Accra, Ghana, in May 2001 to assist in the identification of a serial killer responsible for the horrific murders of over 30 women. During the two weeks the Gerry and the FBI team were in Ghana, a suspect was arrested. The suspect confessed to committing several of the murders. While in the country, the FBI team also trained Ghanaian police investigators in evidence collection and interrogations techniques. Gerry also mentions that when he returned to Ghana several years later, he was very impressed with the advances made.

Retired agent Ed Shaw reviews two cases he worked while assigned to LEGAT Tokyo in Japan. One focused on the capture of an American fugitive who had fled to Taiwan after murdering his wife in Vermont and the other involved the investigation of the theft of an Allosaurus dinosaur fossil illegally exported from the U.S. Both cases show from beginning to end what a Legat does when handling the overseas aspects of an international FBI investigation.

Retired agent Kathy Lambert is interviewed about supervising the Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) in Philadelphia and South Jersey and working on several high-profiled cases, including the investigation and prosecution of the infamous homegrown terrorists known as Jihad Jane. Retired agent John Whiteside reviews his investigation of the longest open espionage case ever brought before the U.S. courts. Thirty-two years after former NSA employee (and NSA spy) Robert Lipka sold vital military secrets to the KGB, John was able to gather the evidence that finally exposed the betrayal. For his outstanding work on this espionage case, in March 1997, John received from Director of the CIA George Tenet the National Intelligence Certificate of Distinction. John has authored the book, Fool's Mate, which provides further details about his investigation of Robert Lipka.

Retired Special Agent Jeff Covington reviews his assignment on a Violent Crimes Squad and two shoot outs he was involved in while in the Kansas City Division. Retired Supervisory Special Agent Jim Wedick reviews his assignment as an undercover agent in the Bureau's very first long-term undercover investigation. The case, Major Case 1, was captioned OPFOPEN – short for Operation Fountain Pen. The investigation marked a significant shift in FBI priorities and the first time the Bureau operated a sophisticated attack on organized crime networks, financial criminals and con-men using White-Collar Crime violations to prosecute off shore criminal enterprises. The case is the subject of a book, Chasing Phil by David Howard.

Retired agent Sherman Hopkins reviews a horrific kidnapping case he worked while assigned to the Dallas Division. The case involved three little girls who went missing from their neighborhoods over a three-year period. The only thing their abductions had in common was a white van seen in the vicinity of these separate incidents. He also shares how this case affected him as a young father and his admiration for the families, particularly one mother, who fought to make sure they would eventually learn what happened to their daughters.

Welcome to the first episode of FBI Retired Case File Review with Jerri Williams. I'd like to take a moment to introduce myself. I'm a retired agent writing crime fiction inspired by actual FBI investigations. My debut novel, Pay to Play, about a female FBI agent investigating corruption in the Philadelphia strip club industry, will be published later this year. FBI Retired Case File Review will feature interviews with retired FBI agents discussing their careers and their most intriguing cases. In this episode, I interview Tom Cotton who retired from the FBI more than 20 years ago. He talks about being assigned to six different offices and working a variety of cases involving Soviet spies, bank robbers, mob guys, and corrupt politicians. I'll also discuss crime fiction and dramas - books, movies and TV shows - especially those depicting the FBI. Retired agent Carrie Landau reviews her sex trafficking investigation of the man who had held sixteen-year-old Desiree Robinson against her will and trafficked her for sex on the website Backpage. Desiree was murdered by a man who answered the online advertisement. Carrie Landau served in the FBI for 21 years. During her Bureau career, she specialized in Crimes Against Children and Human Trafficking Investigations and received the Hero's Award from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Retired agent Martin Suarez reviews his nearly seven-year undercover role infiltrating from inside the cartels. During Operation Colaboro, using the alias "Manny," he smuggled millions of dollars' worth of cocaine for the Medellín Cartel, all of which was seized by the FBI after delivery. During Operation Golden Trash, Martin became a high-level money launderer for the North Coast Cartel. When the operation ended and the cartel thought Manny had stolen their money, they sent a hitman to Martin's home to kill him.

Martin is the author of Inside The Cartel: How An Undercover FBI Agent Smuggled Cocaine, Laundered Cash, and Dismantled a Colombian Narco-Empire. His co-author, Ian Frisch, also takes part in this interview. The true crime tale recounts Martin's undercover operations, but also how Martin the family man was trying not to lose himself in his undercover roles. Martin served in the FBI for 23 years.
