Behind the black basalt walls of Crumlin Road Gaol in Belfast, Northern Ireland, 150 years of history refuses to stay buried.  Once the county gaol for Antrim, "the Crum" as it was known is Northern Ireland's only remaining Victorian-era prison. There's a grand stone building in Fergus, Ontario, that has stood for nearly 150 years. It was built as a poorhouse in 1877 — a place for the destitute, the sick, the aged, and the forgotten. But according to staff who work there today, some of those who lived and died within its walls may never have truly left. Visitors have smelled cigar smoke in empty rooms. Rocking chairs move on their own. And staff have learned one unsettling rule: if you hear the little girl, don't talk back to her. In the late 1800's, the community of Commanda sprang up as a way station along the Old Nipissing Road, one of the last routes built to entice immigrants to Ontario's near north. In 1885 by James and Elizabeth Arthurs, built a store strategically located on the Rosseau-Nipissing Road. During the boom years of settlement in the Southern Canadian Shield, the Commanda General Store served as an important supply centre for the pioneer lumbermen and farmers of the region . Since then it changed hands many times but through it all there have been claims that there are a few ghosts lingering on the premises. Among them is James Arthurs. Nestled along the Rideau Canal between the Chateau Laurier and Parliament Hill is another haunted hotbed, the Bytown Museum. First constructed in 1827, the building that houses the museum is the oldest remaining stone building in Ottawa. One of the more prominent reported ghosts in the building is former supply manager Duncan McNab, who worked during the construction of the canal. Staff and visitors have reported doors shaking almost off their hinges, porcelain dolls that cry and footsteps up and down the stairs from the first floor to the second. He is just one of many who continue to reside in the museum. Strathcona County Museum and Archives is located in the first fire hall of the County, erected in 1959. The RCMP moved in eight years later and shared the building until 1975 . The museum and exhibits opened in 1997, and by 2001 there were reported sightings of a 'friendly', but prankster ghost. Many believe it's the spirit of a former RCMP guard and a prisoner that linger from beyond. Located in Drumheller Alberta, The Johnston House was initially built in 1885 by Dr. Robert Johnson and was occupied by the family. In 1935, at 45, Dr. Johnson met his untimely demise when a hunting rifle discharged while packing it for a hunting trip. On Wednesday, August 1, 1906 George Stanley was hanged. He was the last man executed at the Windsor County Jail. From that day on…. the town was never the same because while justice may have d been served many believe that Freeman Harvey, the man George Stanley so callously killed is not at rest. Judge Charles Edgar DeWolf, who lived in the area, reported seeing the apparition of a headless man in his basement window. He knew that parts of Harvey’s corpse had been found hidden under a pile of potatoes, and the judge was sure that he had seen Harvey’s ghost. Then, other strange things began to happen. This is the story of Headless Harvey. About 25 mins from Victoria, British Columbia is where you'll find Hatley Castle. In 1906, B.C.'s Lieutenant Governor, James Dunsmuir, purchased the property. He and his wife Laura commissioned the renowned Canadian architect Samuel Maclure to build a 40-room mansion in the Tudor revival style that was popular in the Edwardian period. James was often criticized as a public official, and the mansion became his escape when he retired. James and his wife Laura had 12 children. Their youngest son, Jim, was of fighting age when WWI broke out and lost his life on the RMS Lusitania when a German U-boat torpedoed the ship, and Jim’s body was never discovered. The couple was heartbroken by the death of their son and spent the majority of their days mourning him. James died shortly after Jim and ever since then, there have been claims of strange things happening in the mansion. Esther Cox, lived with her married sister Olive Teed, Olive's husband Daniel and their two young children. Her siblings also lived with them, as did Daniel's brother John Teed. The family lived in Amherst, Nova Scotia, Canada and between 1878 and 1879, Esther experienced unexplained knockings, bangings and rustlings in the night. She began to suffer seizures, her body visibly swelled and she was feverish and chilled just before objects in the house took flight. This is her story. A small, historic pond believed to be bottomless and located on Signal Hill in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada is also the final resting place for executed criminals after they were removed from the Gibbet Hill. Captured pirates and other convicted criminals were hung from a gallows on top of the hill, and the bodies were then suspended as a warning to everyone in the city and those entering by ship. It is widely believed that is how Deadman's Pond got its name. It could also have gotten its unfortunate handle as a result of the numerous drownings that have occurred there. Located on the western tip of Nova Scotia, along the Bay of Fundy is Yarmouth and a structure built in 1865 - The Yarmouth County Jail. It had 19 jail cells with iron beds and straw mattresses where prisoners would sleep with no bed sheets or pillows. It was in use by Nova Scotia Correctional Services until 2004 and was the last place Omar Roberts slept before he was hanged in 1922. He was accused and convicted of a horrific crime and is thought to wander the halls of the prison to this day. On Fredericton’s Waterloo Row you'll find a grey Victorian mansion with a bright red roof. In the 1960s the grand old mansion was converted into a men's residence for University of New Brunswick students but decades earlier it had been the home of Mae and Walter Boyce. He donated the equivalent of half a million dollars to start Fredericton’s beloved Boyce Farmers Market. The couple died in the early 50s and since then residents have experienced spooky happenings, like objects and furniture being moved around, doors opening and closing in the night, and ghostly silhouettes drifting around the house. They claimed that Boyce House's constant inhabitant is a friendly ghost that continues to care for people who live in there today. Running underneath what once was a Grand Trunk Railway line in Niagara Falls, Ontario, this structure was abandoned due to lack of funding and became a drainage tunnel so water wouldn't flood nearby farmlands. Throughout the 20th century, farmers used it to transport goods and animals safely underneath the busy railroad above. In 1983 it became the spooky location for David Cronenberg's film adaptation of Stephen King's horror novel The Dead Zone. And it is all because legend says this tunnel is haunted by the ghost of a young woman whose clothing caught fire and died inside. Her screams can still be heard to this day. Located in the upscale neighbourhood of Shaughnessy this stately 20,000 square foot, 30 room home was completed in 1911 for General Alexander Duncan McRae. In the 1920s and 30s, the General and his wife, Blaunche McRae, hosted many high society parties in the house. The gatherings were famous amongst Vancouver’s social elite, especially their New Year’s Eve masquerade balls. Their guests included royalty, high ranking politicians, and high-profile businessmen and their wives. In 1942, the McRae donated Hycroft Manor to the Canadian Government, but before that his family was involved in one of the city's most mysterious unsolved cases. Some believe that the controversy surrounding The McRaes is why Hycroft Manor has easily become one of Vancouver’s most haunted mansions. New Brunswick is the location for today's destination. St. Andrews By The Sea is a quiet and quaint seaside community near the U.S border in Maine. The small town was the centre of justice, local government and professional services for Charlotte County, including the Fundy Isles. Among the picturesque homes is a a small grassy hill. That is where you’ll find the Charlotte County Gaol Provincial Historic Site.   It is adjacent to the white Charlotte County Court House which is a well preserved mid-nineteenth century Maritime courthouse sits a hard granite building with a dark exterior and metal bar windows. The jail on the other hand is a cold and ominous-looking structure meant to keep people in while terrifying all who gaze upon it. It is in stark contrast to what was once the centre of community activities such as elections, fairs, parades, and official visits. It is also where from 1867 to 1957, twenty-six men were executed including Tom Roland Hutchings who it is believed still haunts the cell he once inhabited. The Fairmont Château Laurier in Ottawa, Ontario, is Canada’s most lavish and elegant hotels. Just steps from Canadian Parliament, the granite and white Italian marble building was designed in French Renaissance and neo-Gothic style and built in 1912 for $2 million. Despite its romantic appearance, several deaths have allegedly occurred in and around the hotel, those souls seem to be trapped with the hotel and encounters, including disembodied voice singing, brushes with unseen hands, and doors opening and closing have all been experienced. William Lyon Mackenzie King was Canada's longest serving Prime Minister. He was leader of the Liberal party for 29 years and Prime Minister for a total of 22 years, and steered Canada through the Second World War, yet he had a well-kept secret. Forever a bachelor Mackenzie was a spiritualist who kept in contact with his long departed mother. He often attended two seances a week when he was in Britain, and communicated with other dead relatives, with his predecessor, Sir Wilfrid Laurier, with the late President Franklin Roosevelt, and even with Pat, his departed Irish terrier. The Frank Slide Interpretive Centre, in southern Alberta's spectacular Crowsnest Pass, overlooks Canada's deadliest rockslide. At 4:10 a.m. on April 29, 1903. Around 44 million cubic metres/110 million tonnes (120 million short tons) of limestone rock slid down Turtle Mountain. Within 100 seconds the rock reached up the opposing hills, obliterating the eastern edge of Frank, the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) line and the coal mine. It was one of the largest landslides in Canadian history and remains the deadliest, as between 70 and 90 of the town's residents died, most of whom remain buried in the rubble. Today, you can still hear their screams. From 1835 and up until 2013, it housed some of the most dangerous criminals in Canadian history, but now it's deserted. As you walk through the metal gates, nervous laughter ripples through you. Footsteps echo through the hallway and rooms, which still have graffiti on the walls. The vaulted heart of the prison has a brick-laid ceiling which is truly remarkable. A central dome connects four cell block buildings. If the walls of the Kingston Penitentiary could talk; they would tell you of these notorious criminals and share with you the eerie history of murders, and violent riots.
