Police believed it was connected to a string of other sex attacks in the area. But the true culprit wasn’t hiding in plain sight, but standing by their side.

Sunday 9th of October 1983, at around noon, roughly 75 yards north of the Coventry Canal, homeless man, George Cunningham was shuffling up the Old Leicester Road, when he discovered the body of 30-year-old wife and mother-of-three Lalitaben Ladva of Rugby. She had been strangled, beaten with a hammer, and her body dumped. It seemed like a motiveless crime, but a series of lies and deceptions by her killer would unearth the selfish reason for her murder.

On Wednesday 8th of January 1988, at 3:25pm, expelled pupil 16-year-old Darren Fowler entered the Ferrers School in the town of Higham Ferrers with two knives, 25 cartridges and a shotgun. He had written a suicide note, and planned to get revenge on those who had wronged him. By 3:37pm, it was over. But unlike the Dunblane massacre, it is largely forgotten, and why, like the Dormers Wells school shooting did it not lead for stricter gun control? This was the UK’s penultimate school shooting.

Saturday the 12th of April 1958, two men – 60-year-old Isaiah Dixon and 32-year-old Matthew Kavanagh – returned to their boarding house at 11 Hillmorton Road in Rugby. Kavanagh strangled Dixon with his own tie, stole 34 10s from his pockets, went shopping, and confessed to his murder. But then in court, he denied murder, and used an alibi which had got many 1950s killers off a murder charge.

Wednesday 20th of March 1985, the 9:02pm slow train from London Euston to Birmingham New Street pulls out of Coventry Station, having passed through Northampton, Long Buckby and Rugby. It was silent, empty, and as the lone passenger slides open the door, in an off-side compartment, he saw blood up the windows and its seats saturated in a dark goo, as running twelve feet from the seat to a door stained with red sticky prints, a ‘river’ of blood ran along the aisle.

Back in 2019, the ground floor flat at 4 Darell Road in Kew was home to 34-year-old Laureline Garcia-Bertaux, a busy singleton working in the media who had big plans of being a creative success, and was striving to make it happen.

In the spring of 1942, a young French girl known only as ‘Veronique’ vanished from the streets of Soho. No-one knew her real name, where she came from, or how she had got there, but she had lived and worked as a prostitute for almost two years, and then having tried to escape, she vanished. Her disappearance is as much of a mystery as her life, or identity.

Unlike others episodes of Murder Mile, this was compiled over a decade from the reminiscences of those who knew her or knew of her, therefore not everything should be taken as fact. Memories are subjective, and over time, the accuracy fades, and details are shifted, rearranged or adapted to suit a bias or perspective, so all that remains is a mystery.

On Wednesday 21st of March 1984, 79-year-old Hilda Murrell of Shropshire was attacked in her own home by an unseen assailant. Double killer, David McKenzie had already been convicted of the murders of 76-year-old widow Barbara Pinder in 1984 in Battersea and 86-year-old widow Henrietta Osbourne in Chelsea, which had similar hallmarks. On the Saturday the 27th of October 1984, 76-year-old widow Barbara Pinder was brutally murdered in her own flat on Prince of Wales Drive in Battersea by an unknown man with a lot of hatred for her. One year later, on Saturday 27th of October 1985, 86-year-old widow Henrietta Osbourne was also stabbed and attacked frenziedly in an attack which had similar hallmarks. It went unsolved for two years… then out of the blue, a petty burglar confessed to both murders. Evidence proved it was him, he confessed, he was convicted. At 5pm, he planned to close-up early to watch the World Cup, but was beaten to death by his last customer. But was this Patrick MacKay? He confessed to the robbery, but not the murder.

On Friday the 20th of July 1973, a kind and frail 75-year-old spinster called Mary Hynds was last seen entering her ground floor lodging at 4 Willes Road in Kentish Town, London. The next morning her body was discovered; she had been strangled and beaten violently about the head in a killing which has similarities to the murders of Adele Price, Isabella Griffiths and Father Anthony Crean. Police linked it to serial killer Patrick MacKay, and he confessed to the crime. But was he guilty?

On Sunday the 8th of July 1973, 17-year-old German tourist Heidi Mnilk boarded the 4:57pm train to Hayes at Charing Cross station. At 5:08pm, just 90 seconds outside of London Bridge station, a scream was heard, she was stabbed and her body was thrown onto the tracks at Bermondsey. 

Her murder has never been solved. But on Thursday 17th of April at Brixton Prison, serial killer Patrick MacKay (awaiting trial for the murders of Adele Price, Isabella Griffith and Father Anthony Crean) confessed to "killing eleven people". One of them, he claimed, was Heidi Mnilk. But did he? This series explores the killings he confessed to, and which he committed.

On Monday 23rd of August 1971 at 9:40am, a gang of armed robbers stole £166,000 (£3.2 million today) from Preston’s Jewellers in Blackpool, and in their haste to escape, three officers were shot, many were injured, and Detective Superintendent Gerry Richardson was shot. The gang’s leader, Frederick Sewell, a gangster known as ‘Fat Fred’ was branded ‘Britain’s most hates man’ and hunted.

On Monday the 12th of May 1975 at 2:40pm, two prostitutes on the first and second floors of 3 Peter Street were ‘entertaining’ their clients. With these small flats connected by a communal door, their punters rang the right bell for Jeanne, the left bell for ‘Sheila’ and were greeted on the stairwell by the correct prostitute’s maid. It was all very businesslike and efficient for these two professional woman.

But with a campaign of violence between rival gangs having torn apart this side of the city, as bad men did bad things for selfish reasons, two women would become the unwitting victims of ‘The Syndicate’.

Tuesday the 18th of February 1992 at 7:15pm. Merlyn Nuttall was kidnapped, raped, stabbed and set on fire by a drug-crazed assailant inside of a crack den at 9 Effra Road in Brixton. She could have died owing to her wounds and she should have been scarred for life owing to the attack, but as you’ll hear, from the precipice of death, it was the woman she was who ensured that the case was resolved, the culprit was convicted, and that the rest of her life was worth living.

Note: after this episode was released, I was made aware that this wasn't the work of one Colin Findlay, but two; two almost identical men, both Scottish, both quiet and depressed, both rapists and attempted murderers / murderers, who targeted similar women and committed almost identical crimes. It's an incredible twist and it's almost as if they were related, but they weren't. There is a correction in this episode.

On Friday the 7th of February 1936, 32-year-old Carmen Swann booked a twin room for one night in Clarendon Court at 33 Maida Vale, West London. Staying in Room 4 of Flat 20 on the third floor, she and her 8-year-old daughter unpacked their cases, popped on their nightdresses, ordered a pot of tea and got into bed beside the reassuring warmth of the fire. Their stay marked the end of a very long journey, and it was here that their lives would cease.

Saturday 19th of December 1992 at 2:20pm, behind a wooden hut at White City bus depot off Caxton Road in Shepherd's Bush, the body of 32-year-old successful Peter Wickins was found, he was naked except for a pair of socks and had been stabbed 19 times.

The Police assumed because he was a millionaire dressed in a tuxedo and that his Rolex watch was missing, that it must be a robbery gone wrong. But it led to a story which was much darker, as one of life’s winners... met one of life's losers.

They left without a struggle, with no blood spilled, no damage done and nobody hurt. On Tuesday 6th of September 2022, 71-year-old Susan Hawkey was last seen entering her flat on Aylesbury Street in Neasden. Nobody saw her, nobody heard her, and – although vulnerable and afraid - no-one was looking out for her. On 1st January 1932, in the attic room of 27 Old Compton Street in Soho, 19-year-old domestic servant Edith McQuaid gave birth to a baby boy. Whether he died of natural causes, or she took his life by infanticide will never be known. But she wasn't alone. Edith was one of 1000s of women who concealed the pregnancy, the body of the dead babies or murdered them at birth across the United Kingdom, and yet, it wasn't there fault, as this national scandal had been raging for centuries.

Monday 31st of October 1960, at 5:30pm, the body of 53-year-old William Davies was found inside the top-floor flat of 5 Westbourne Park Road in Bayswater, London, W2. There was no sign of a break-in, no struggle and no obvious robbery. He was found on his knees, with a knife in his chest, and even though all the evidence pointed to this being a suicide, the police knew it wasn't.

But still unsolved today, it remains one of the most perplexing unsolved double murders in Britain. But who was he?

Across October and early November 1888, when 'Jack the Ripper' slayed several women in the East End of London, a smaller and largely forgotten sexual sadist was attacking women in Soho in the West End. Masked using a series of baffling distractions, his crimes were made possible owing to the fevered frenzy in the midst of a mini media mania committed in the Ripper's shadow. But who was he, was it a hoax, or did he even exist? Sunday the 1st of December 2019 was the last time 53-year-old William Algar, a talented jazz trumpeter was seen alive. One month later, parts of his dismembered body were found in his flat at 7 Nowell Road in Barnes, having been the victim of cuckooing by a drugs gang. But who had murdered him? This is a story about a county lines gang who murdered an innocent man in the name of greed.

Note: Wodu, Emmons & Dube were found guilty of the later murder of Ebrima Cham. In the murder of William Algar, all were convicted of perverting the course of justice, but unable to prove who had killed William, Wodu, Emmons & Dube were found ‘not guilty’ of his murder or his manslaughter.

In the evening of Tuesday 20th of May 1941, 28-year-old single-mother Phyllis Crocker and her 18-month-old daughter Eileen went to bed, as usual. Being 3 months pregnant, Phyllis drank a cup of cocoa to help her sleep, as made by her husband. But little did she know it would make her sleep for an eternity.

On Sunday 5th of November 1978, at a little after 5:30pm, two women stood at a bus stop on Sydney Place in Kensington, SW7, waiting for the rush hour bus. Having been close friends for decades, there seemed to be an odd friction between them, and although their issue was of a personal nature, within minutes, one would be a wanted criminal on the run, and the other would be shot dead.
