- 712 - The Suburban Mum Who Lost $500,000 to Poker Machines
For more than a decade, Kate Seselja lived a double life.
Outwardly, she was a well-spoken suburban mum raising six children. Privately, she was trapped in a devastating poker machine addiction that would cost her more than $500,000, push her family into overwhelming debt, and bring her to the brink of suicide.
In this deeply confronting episode, Kate takes us back to the years when gambling consumed her life — the highs of winning, the crushing shame of losing, the secrecy, and the relentless hope that the next spin would fix everything. She reflects on how poker machines are designed to hijack the brain, why addiction thrives in silence, and how stigma keeps people trapped for far too long.
Kate also speaks candidly about her rock-bottom moment while pregnant with her sixth child, what stopped her from ending her life, and the long road to recovery that followed. Now an advocate and founder of The Hope Project, she dedicates her life to helping others understand gambling harm as a public health issue and not a personal failure.
This episode is a powerful reminder that gambling addiction doesn’t look the way we expect it to and that it can happen to anyone.
If this episode brings up anything for you, support is available. You can contact Lifeline on 13 11 14.
Kate Seselja, along with at GHLEE (Gambling Harm Lived Experience Experts) are calling for each state and territory to enforce loss limits on poker machines of $100 per day, $500 per month, and $5000 per year. This simple act will literally save lives. You can find out more information and sign their petition here.

Sun, 01 Feb 2026 - 711 - Angie Kent Always Knew She’d Be A Solo Mum
Angie Kent first joined No Filter back in 2019, she was fresh off The Bachelorette, newly in love, and stepping into a very public chapter of her life. A lot has changed since then.
In this episode, Angie returns with Kate Langbroek for an honest, deeply reflective conversation about what it means to choose a life that feels right, even when it doesn’t look the way you once imagined.
Angie opens up about her decision to become a solo mum by choice, sharing her IVF journey, the public reaction (both supportive and critical), and the internal certainty that led her here. She reflects on her search for love, the pressure women still face around partnership and timelines, and why companionship now matters more than financial stability, especially when so many women are finding men aren’t meeting them where they are.
This is a conversation about autonomy, motherhood, healing, and unlearning the scripts we’re handed. About trusting your instincts. About choosing yourself. And about what it really means to say, “I am the right person.”

Sun, 25 Jan 2026 - 710 - Jonathan Van Ness: Addiction, HIV and the Wake-Up Call That Saved My Life
Jonathan Van Ness is one of the most recognisable and beloved figures in pop culture today - but in this conversation, they open up about the chapters of their life few people truly understand.
Jonathan speaks candidly about addiction, relapse, sex addiction, and living with HIV, including the moment they realised contracting HIV ultimately saved their life by forcing them to confront a dangerous relationship with meth. With extraordinary honesty, Jonathan reflects on survival, recovery, shame, joy, and what it really means to heal.
We also talk about identity, coming out as non-binary, people-pleasing, impulse behaviour, and why healing isn’t a destination — it’s a lifelong practice. Alongside the heavy moments, Jonathan brings humour, warmth and deep compassion, sharing how movement, group fitness, love, and chosen family helped them rebuild a life they want to stay in.
This is a powerful, vulnerable and deeply human conversation about staying alive, finding joy after trauma, and learning how to come home to yourself.

Sun, 18 Jan 2026 - 709 - New Year, Same Me — Celeste Barber Keeps It Real
In a world of New Year, New Me promises, Celeste Barber has built a career on doing the opposite. She keeps it real—big knickers, unflattering angles, and a refusal to pretend life is anything other than messy.
Celeste built a global following by parodying celebrity perfection and making millions of people laugh on Instagram. But in this episode of No Filter, she steps away from the selfies and punchlines to talk about the parts of her life the internet rarely sees.
In this candid conversation with Kate Langbroek, Celeste opens up about the chaos of her childhood, her ADHD diagnosis, the burnout that nearly broke her, and the pressure of being the internet’s favourite funny woman. She talks honestly about her marriage to ‘Hot Husband’ Api, what it’s like raising kids under public scrutiny, and the work she’s done to decide which parts of her life stay private.
She reflects on what fame has given her, what it’s taken, and why resisting the urge to constantly “fix” herself has become an act of self-preservation.
Yes, she’s hilarious. But she’s also thoughtful, vulnerable, and still figuring it out—one small, imperfect win at a time.
This is the real Celeste Barber, beyond the selfies, the knickers, and the punchlines.
You can follow Celeste Barber and find tickets to her upcoming Australian regional tour Backup Dancer here.

Sun, 04 Jan 2026 - 706 - You Asked, We Listened — The Full Mel C Conversation
She’s about to take centre stage at the Sydney New Year’s Eve countdown on the harbour, but before that, here is Melanie Chisholm (aka Mel C) for her most open conversation yet.
You know the name—Sporty Spice. But before the world tours, the crop tops and the legacy of Girl Power, Melanie was just a 20-year-old answering a flyer to audition for a girl band. In this episode of No Filter, Kate Langbroek speaks with Melanie in a rare, full-length conversation that goes far beyond the headlines and the pop mythology.
Melanie reflects on the real story behind the Spice Girls, what it was like to rise to global fame almost overnight, and the personal cost that came with it.
In this episode, you’ll hear about:
The dizzying highs and private heartbreaks of being in one of the biggest girl bands of all time
How sudden fame shaped Melanie’s mental health and sense of self
The bond she still shares with her Spice sisters today
Why she’s finally made peace with that chapter of her life
Honest, grounded and deeply reflective, this is Melanie Chisholm as you’ve never heard her before.

Sun, 21 Dec 2025 - 704 - Bonnie Blue requested an interview with us. We almost said no
Inside Mamamia, we spent weeks debating whether this interview should happen at all.
Every woman on the team had strong feelings about Bonnie Blue. We talked, argued, researched, and questioned whether giving her any space was responsible. We knew our audience would feel the same tension we did.
So why did we do it?
Because Bonnie Blue asked us for this interview. She reached out to No Filter, specifically and we needed to understand why.
In the lead-up, we watched every interview she has done. Most were either sensationalist, openly hostile, or enthusiastically cheering her on. None of them asked what we genuinely needed answered:
Does she understand the implications of what she does?
Does she understand the misogynistic language she uses about women?
Why does her behaviour evoke such visceral anger in women?
And crucially — does she care?
What we learnt, very quickly, is that behind the shock value and headlines is a deeply strategic marketing machine — one built on outrage, provocation and attention. Bonnie Blue told us plainly: she rage-baits on purpose. She knows that women’s fury spreads faster than anything else online, and she has learnt how to leverage that to build her name and her business.
This episode is not designed to rehabilitate her image, and it certainly isn’t designed to promote her.
It is designed for one purpose only: to understand what she’s doing, why she’s doing it, and what it means for the rest of us.This is a conversation that unsettled us, challenged us, and left us with more questions than answers.
But it is an important one — because it sits at the crossroads of sex, power, misogyny, internet fame, and the culture that rewards outrage above everything else.THE END BITS:

Sun, 14 Dec 2025 - 703 - “I Love My Husband. I Also Love My Boyfriend.” How an Open Marriage Really Works
What really happens when you open up your marriage?
This week on No Filter, Kate Langbroek sits down with writer Deepa Paul, whose book Ask Me How It Works chronicles the decade she has spent in an open marriage with her husband, Marcus. While the conversation around open relationships has been everywhere lately, Deepa’s story offers a different perspective. For her, non-monogamy didn’t break her marriage. It reshaped it.
Deepa was raised in the Philippines, where divorce is still illegal and the expectation for women is clear: marry once, stay devoted, stay desirable, stay monogamous. But after moving to Amsterdam with her husband, Deepa discovered a version of herself she’d never had permission to explore. One that included desire, autonomy, and eventually, a boyfriend she also loves deeply.
In this candid conversation, Deepa answers the questions so many people have about open marriage but rarely ask out loud:
How does it work? How do you handle jealousy? What happens when one partner gets more attention? How do you parent inside a non-traditional structure? And what do you do when you fall in love with someone else? You can follow Deepa Paul here.

Turia Pitt has been called inspiring, extraordinary and resilient, but her new book is about something far less shiny: selfishness.
After surviving the fire that changed her life, Turia built a career as an author, speaker and endurance athlete. From the outside, she looked unstoppable. Inside, she was exhausted, overwhelmed and edging towards a breakdown she didn’t see coming.
In this conversation, Turia opens up to Kate about the moment she realised she needed help, how burnout crept into her life without her noticing, and why putting everyone else first was slowly destroying her. She talks honestly about motherhood, boundaries, the pressure to be grateful, and the small habits that pushed her to the brink.
This is a side of Turia Pitt you haven’t heard before. It’s thoughtful, surprising and full of the kind of honesty that makes you rethink your own life.

Sun, 23 Nov 2025 - 700 - Dita Von Teese's Life as a Showgirl
Dita Von Teese has spent her life turning beauty into power.
Born Heather Sweet in small-town Michigan, she grew up dreaming of old Hollywood glamour, satin corsets, and the kind of femininity that shimmered on the silver screen. When she opened her first bra as a teenager—a plain white cotton thing inside a plastic egg—she was deeply disappointed. That moment, she says, is where it all began. If the world wouldn’t make things beautiful, she would.
In this conversation, Dita opens up about the art and discipline behind the spectacle that made her a global icon. She talks about her early days as a model and Playboy cover star, the power and intention behind creating the Dita Von Teese persona, and how she’s kept mystery alive in a world prone to oversharing.
She also shares what it was like collaborating with Taylor Swift on Bejeweled and how rare it is, even now, to be approached by another artist with such genuine respect for her craft. Dita explains that while many have imitated her, Taylor came to her as a true collaborator.
Now, as she brings her new show Nocturnelle to Australia in 2026, Dita talks about control, longevity, and the quiet strength behind the glamour. Click here for tour information.

Sun, 16 Nov 2025 - 699 - From Prison Cells to Country Stardom: The Incredible Story of Jelly Roll
He was born Jason DeFord in Nashville, Tennessee. By the time he was a teenager, he was in and out of jail, surrounded by addiction, violence, and survival. He thought his life would end the same way it began: in chaos. But somewhere inside those walls, he started writing lyrics and dreaming about music.
Today, the world knows him as Jelly Roll, one of the most unlikely success stories in country music. He has gone from a decade behind bars to the top of the Billboard charts, winning CMA Awards and earning Grammy nominations along the way. His songs are raw, confessional, and painfully honest. They are about addiction, faith, shame, forgiveness, and the long, slow road to redemption.
In this deeply moving conversation with Kate Langbroek, recorded backstage at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney minutes before he hit the stage, Jelly Roll went deep about how he turned his pain into purpose. He shares the stories of the people who saved him, including his wife, Bunnie XO, and his children. He opens up about his years in prison, his mother’s struggles, his faith, and the moment he learned that forgiveness starts with yourself.
It is the story of a man who refused to give up on himself, even when the world had. A boy who became a better man, a husband, a father, and one of the most honest voices in country music today.

Wed, 29 Oct 2025 - 695 - ‘Crazy Cousin’ Amy Saw Everything The Infamous Duggars Tried To Hide
For years, the Duggar family was one of America’s most famous and most controversial reality TV dynasties. Their show 19 Kids and Counting turned their strict religious beliefs and enormous family into entertainment.

Amy Duggar King, known to viewers as the “rebel” or “crazy cousin,” grew up alongside the Duggars, but her childhood looked very different. Now she’s telling her story about what it was really like growing up on the fringes of that world, what she saw happening behind the scenes, and why she refuses to stay silent.
In this episode of No Filter, Amy opens up about family loyalty, generational trauma, and how she’s reclaiming her voice after years of being told to be quiet.

Sun, 26 Oct 2025 - 694 - At 37, Lucy Ormonde Joined A 'Boob Club'
Lucy Ormonde thought she was too young to get breast cancer. She wasn’t. At 37, Lucy believed she was healthy, she had no family history or any of the risk factors we generally associate with cancer. But cancer found her anyway.
In this special episode of No Filter, Holly Wainwright speaks with Lucy to mark the end of Breast Cancer Awareness month. No woman in Australia hasn't been touched in some way by breast cancer. And Lucy has some hard-won wisdom to share with us: like, what's the most useful stuff you can do when somebody is right in that heat of finding out that everything in their life has shifted in just a few words that came out of their doctor's mouth, why it's not over when it's officially over, and what really happens to your priorities and your life when you go through something as profound as this.
You can find Lucy's Substack 'A Year of Healing' here.

Sun, 12 Oct 2025 - 691 - Laura Brown and Kristina O’Neill Had the Coolest Jobs in Magazines - Then They Got Fired
Laura Brown and Kristina O’Neill had the kind of jobs most people only dream about. They were the women behind some of the world’s most glamorous magazines — InStyle, Harper’s Bazaar, WSJ. Magazine — sitting front row at fashion week, rubbing shoulders with celebs on covershoots, and setting the cultural agenda.
But then, both of them got fired.
In an industry built on power, prestige, and appearances, being shown the door at the very top should have been devastating. Instead, it sparked a friendship, a book, and a movement. Their manifesto All the Cool Girls Get Fired is about stripping away the shame of job loss and reframing it as a rite of passage.
In this conversation with Kate Langbroek, Laura and Kristina open up about what it’s really like to lose your dream job, the night out that led to their viral “all the cool girls get fired” post, and how even icons like Oprah and Lisa Kudrow have their own firing stories.
It’s about friendship, resilience, and reinvention — and why getting fired might just be the best thing that ever happens to you.

Sun, 14 Sep 2025 - 685 - Yes, Elizabeth Gilbert Plotted To Murder The Love Of Her Life
There’s one thing you definitely know about Elizabeth Gilbert.
She wrote Eat Pray Love - a book that became a global phenomenon, a movie, and a blueprint for millions of women seeking transformation. It made Liz one of the most famous writers in the world.
But behind that fame was a deeper story - one Liz never told. Until now.
In her new memoir, All the Way to the River, Elizabeth Gilbert tells the truth about the love of her life, her best friend-turned-partner, the late Rayya Elias. It’s a story that’s fierce, complicated, and far from the romantic ideal many people projected onto them. It’s also about Liz’s own descent into addiction; not to drugs or alcohol, but to sex and love.
“I am a sex and love addict,” she writes. “I have caused tremendous harm to myself and others.” In this brutally honest conversation, Liz opens up to Holly about the darkest chapters of her life; the chaos of living with a partner relapsing into addiction, the shame of her own destructive patterns, and the moment she contemplated something unthinkable.
But this is also a story about healing, truth, and grace. About the kind of honesty that can save your life. And about what happens when you stop running, and finally let yourself be seen.
This is Elizabeth Gilbert like you’ve never heard her before: Unfiltered. Grieving. Funny. Fierce.
And ready to tell the whole truth.THE END BITS:

Wed, 10 Sep 2025 - 684 - Rosie O’Donnell on the Day Her Friendship With Ellen Fell Apart
Rosie O’Donnell has lived almost every version of life in the spotlight. From her breakout in Hollywood alongside Tom Hanks and Madonna, to her groundbreaking daytime talk show that redefined television, Rosie was one of the most famous women in America.

In this conversation, Rosie is raw, funny and reflective. She speaks about growing up in the shadow of losing her mother, her shy first attempts at romance, the highs and lows of talk show success, and the very public feuds that made headlines. She shares what it was like to be blindsided by Ellen’s rejection, and why that moment stayed with her. And yes, she even talks about her recent return to our screens in And Just Like That.
Rosie O’Donnell has lived a big, messy, fascinating life — and in this episode, she tells it all.

Sun, 17 Aug 2025 - 679 - The Story Kayla Jade Wasn’t Supposed to Tell
Kayla Jade didn’t plan to become one of the most recognisable women on Australian TikTok. She didn’t plan to become a sex worker, or a mum, or a viral sensation. But somehow, she’s all of those things and more.
In this episode of No Filter, Kate Langbroek sits down with Kayla to talk about the story that wasn’t supposed to be told. The one that includes a man named Peggy Sue, an A-Lister who asked for too much, falling for one of her clients and that infamous meet up with Drake. It's deep dive into the wild, unfiltered life Kayla’s built - one storytime at a time.
From her rise on OnlyFans to becoming a full-service sex worker, from co-parenting in the Gold Coast hinterland to managing fame, surgery, shame and survival, Kayla speaks with extraordinary candour about everything she’s lived through and what she’s still learning.
And yes, we talk about the pegging story that may or may not have impacted the federal election.

Sun, 03 Aug 2025 - 677 - Osher Günsberg On What Happens When TV Fame Ends
Osher Günsberg has been one of the most recognisable people on Australian television. The face of The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, The Masked Singer, and Australian Idol, he’s been in our living rooms for over two decades.
But TV has changed. The work slowed. And suddenly, one of the most familiar faces in the country found himself scrambling to pay the mortgage.
In this episode of No Filter, Osher sits down with Kate Langbroek for a raw and revealing conversation about what happens when the cameras stop rolling. He opens up about the financial strain of losing multiple prime-time jobs, the reality of hustling for gigs to make ends meet, and the ego hit that comes with watching an industry move on without you.

Sun, 27 Jul 2025 - 676 - Why You Immediately Need To Know The Name CJ Hendry
CJ Hendry is one of the world’s most successful working artists. But she didn’t go to art school. She didn’t have a plan. And for a long time, she didn’t even call herself an artist.
She was a uni dropout working in retail, with a side obsession for beautiful things. One day she sold her entire wardrobe on eBay, bought some pencils and paper, and started to draw. She shared her work online. Then Kanye West bought one of her pieces. And everything changed.
In this conversation, CJ tells Kate Langbroek how she built a global art business from scratch, without a gallery, a degree, or any of the traditional paths artists are expected to follow. She talks about the moment the Andy Warhol Foundation threatened to sue her, and how she turned it into an international scavenger hunt. She opens up about marriage, motherhood, money, and why Sundays nearly break her. And she shares how a rebrand in Year 5 became the first step in becoming who she is now.
CJ also makes a major announcement during this episode — one that her fans will not want to miss.
Whether you’ve never heard of CJ or have been following her work for years, this is the story of what can happen when someone doesn’t wait for permission.

Sun, 20 Jul 2025 - 675 - Bethany And Simone Did Everything Together - Until a Toxic Drink Took Simone’s Life
Bethany Clarke and Simone White were best friends.
They’d known each other since they were kids. So when they set off on a long-awaited backpacking trip through Southeast Asia, it was meant to be a joyful, carefree adventure.
But just three days into their holiday, everything changed.
At their hostel in Laos, Bethany and Simone attended happy hour drinks by the pool. What they didn’t know was that the drinks had been contaminated with methanol, a toxic and often fatal chemical sometimes found in unregulated alcohol.
Within 24 hours, both women were seriously unwell and found themselves in hospital. Simone didn’t survive. Bethany did.
This is the story of what happened next - the decisions no one should have to make in a foreign hospital, the grief of losing your best friend, and the unbearable weight of being the one left behind.

Sun, 13 Jul 2025 - 674 - Deborah Frances-White Isn't Afraid To Take On The Manosphere
Deborah Frances-White is the woman behind The Guilty Feminist, the podcast that’s sparked global conversations about modern feminism, contradiction, and calling ourselves in.
She’s a comedian, an author, a screenwriter, and a performer. But underneath all of that is someone who knows what it means to live in silence.
Adopted at birth and raised in a strict religious community, Deborah grew up in a world shaped by rules, obedience, and fear. She was taught to conform. To behave. To stay quiet. And she did, for a while.
In this episode of No Filter, Deborah shares the story of walking away from everything she was raised to believe, and how she found her voice in the aftermath. We talk about her new book, Six Conversations We’re Scared to Have, and why she's choosing to say the things most of us are too afraid to.
She speaks about gender non-conformity, shame, free speech, cancel culture, and the emotional impact of being publicly shunned. We also talk about comedy, and how it became the way she processes pain, connection and truth.
This is a conversation about identity, courage, and what happens when you stop being the person everyone expected you to be.

Sun, 06 Jul 2025 - 673 - The Marvel Star Who Survived Opus Dei as a Gay Teen
Before Australian actor, Tim Pocock, was cast as young Cyclops in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, he was a teenager growing up in a strict Catholic home - navigating a world where being gay wasn’t just discouraged, it was treated as something to be fixed.
In this raw and powerful conversation, Tim opens up about his time at Redfield College in Sydney - a school linked to Opus Dei. He speaks candidly about surviving conversion therapy, and the years he spent battling internalised homophobia.
Tim also shares what it was like to grow up silenced, how that trauma shaped his relationship with his body, his family and his faith, and what it took to finally unlearn it all - and live as himself.
This is a story of survival, truth, and reclaiming identity.

Celeste Barber built a global following by being “real” - pulling faces in big knickers, parodying celebrity perfection, and making millions of people laugh on Instagram.
But this is the side of Celeste that Instagram doesn’t see.
In this intimate and revealing conversation, Celeste opens up about the chaos of her childhood, her ADHD diagnosis, the burnout that nearly broke her, and the pressure of being the internet’s favourite funny woman.

Sun, 22 Jun 2025 - 670 - Vincent Fantauzzo On The Trauma He Hid From Asher Keddie
On paper, Vincent Fantauzzo’s life looks perfect. He’s one of Australia’s most celebrated portrait artists, winning the People’s Choice Award at the Archibald Prize four times. His subjects have included some of Australia’s biggest names - Heath Ledger, Baz Luhrmann, Matt Moran - and his work hangs in galleries, private collections, and museums around the world.
He’s married to beloved actress Asher Keddie, they’re raising two boys together, and from the outside, it looks like Vincent has it all. But his real story is far more complicated.
In this conversation, Vincent opens up about the trauma he’s carried since childhood: neglect, abuse, crime, poverty and the trauma that shaped him long before he ever picked up a paintbrush.
He speaks about growing up completely illiterate, the violence he witnessed and was part of as a teenager, and how boxing became the unlikely path that led him to art, and ultimately, to healing.
This is a conversation about survival, love, redemption, and the parts of someone’s story you’ll never see just by looking at their life from the outside.

Sun, 15 Jun 2025 - 668 - From Husbands to Friends, Poh Ling Yeow Has Mastered Breakups
You might know Poh Ling Yeow as an artist, a chef and a regular fixture on television ever since she was first introduced to Australia on MasterChef. But that’s just the public side of Poh.
The version you see is only part of her truth; behind it lies a layered, often painful journey.
In this conversation Poh opens up about her years spent in the church before walking away from it, which left her untangling years of belief and identity.
She shares the profound grief she has experienced with the loss of her mother, and as well as the heartbreak of two marriage breakdowns and how those moments led to loneliness, questioning and rebuilding.
But through it all, she’s discovered something quite extraordinary: an ability to find beauty in the sorrow, light in the mess, and humour in the most unexpected places.
This is a conversation about identity, resilience, creativity, and what it means to truly move on and start over.
You can watch Poh on this season of MasterChef on Network 10 and you can follow her here:

Sun, 08 Jun 2025 - 667 - David Holmes Was Harry Potter's Stunt Double... And Then He Was Paralysed
David Holmes is the Harry Potter you’ve never heard of. That’s because he was Daniel Radcliffe’s stunt double.
At just 25 years old, David Holmes was living the dream. He was working on the biggest film franchise in the world, out partying, and fully immersed in a life of sex, drugs, and rock and roll.
A former gymnast turned stuntman, he was in all the Harry Potter films—growing up alongside the cast, almost like a big brother to a group of pre-teens who would go on to become global stars. But while rehearsing a stunt for the final Harry Potter film—a move he’d done many times before—something went terribly wrong. David was flung into a wall and broke his neck. He now refers to his injury as “the gift that keeps on taking.”
Over 15 years later, David has the use of only one arm. But as you’ll hear in this conversation, he doesn’t see himself as a victim. Life, he says, guarantees nothing. It’s what you do with what you’ve got that counts.
And David is doing a lot. From writing a novel to producing a documentary with his friend Daniel Radcliffe, hosting a podcast, advocating for disability rights—and yes, having the best sex of his life.

The Otto Legacy. An Award Winning Documentary. High End Fashion.
Gracie Otto is one of the Ottos—you know, Barry and Miranda Otto, Australian cinematic royalty. But she has carved out her own space in the industry. She’s the director behind The Other Guy, Deadloch, The Artful Dodger, and Heartbreak High.
However, it’s her most recent film, the AACTA-winning documentary Otto by Otto, that pulls back the curtain on the Otto family. What began as a project documenting her father, Barry, as he prepared to premiere a one-man show became something far more personal. Through her lens, Gracie realised she was capturing the unfolding reality of her dad’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis.
What You’ll Hear:
How Otto by Otto became a heartbreaking portrait of her father, Barry Otto The highs and lows of a career in Australian film and theatre The challenge of documenting a loved one’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis in real time How and why she never stops workingTHE END BITS:

Sun, 25 May 2025 - 664 - Brooke Boney Doesn’t Know What’s Next… And She’s Ok With That
Brooke Boney had one of the best gigs in the world. For years, we woke up with her on morning TV. Not just with breakfast television, but with Australia. She was heading overseas to study at Oxford.
She’s back in Australia now - wiser, thoughtful, and unsure of what her next move will be. She’s collected her wisdom in a new book, All Of It, and that pretty much sums up this special episode of No Filter.
In this conversation, you’ll hear Kate & Brooke discuss:
Fame & Stalkers (yes, plural) Why Brooke loves sport so much Family, Fertility, and Love Being the first Indigenous woman on commercial TV So much more…You can find Brooke’s book, All Of It, here:https://www.allenandunwin.com/browse/book/Brooke-Boney-All-of-It-9781761068003

Wed, 14 May 2025 - 662 - "I Was A Neo-Nazi Skinhead" [Part One] How Christian Picciolini Was Radicalised
[Part 1 of 2] At fourteen years old, Christian Picciolini was lost, confused and looking for guidance. If he’d been approached by a footy coach or a skateboarder - he reckons he would have followed their lead. But instead, he was recruited by the leader of the notorious Chicago area skinheads, and found himself deeply entwined in a violent, racist and dangerous neo-nazi hate group.
Today, however, Christian spends every day of his life trying to undo the harm he caused, and to help other young people disengage from hate groups. So how did Christian go from being the lead propagandist for an extremist organisation to actively working to bring them down?
It’s a story you’ll have to hear to believe - and it’s a story that’s more important today than ever before.

Sun, 11 May 2025 - 661 - The Women Behind "Strife": Asher, Mia, Bruna And Jessie
It’s been 18 months since Evelyn Jones burst onto our screens—fictional, yes, but her story couldn’t feel more real to the women who brought her to life.
In this special episode of No Filter, host Jessie Stephens—who is also a writer on the show and Mamamia’s Executive Editor—is joined by Mia Freedman, whose memoir Work, Strife, Balance inspired the hit Binge series Strife, along with Asher Keddie, who plays Evelyn, and executive producer Bruna Papandrea.
They reflect on Season 1, including Mia’s emotional spiral before the premiere, and give us a sneak peek at what’s to come in Season 2, dropping Thursday, May 8.
Together, these powerhouse creatives open up about what it means to be a woman in the media and entertainment industry today—the competition, the comparisons, the fear of cancellation, and the constant balancing act between public and private life.
And of course, they talk about ambition: what it costs, why it matters, and how the world still struggles when women dare to want more.
Season 2 of Strife premieres on Binge Thursday May 8th,.

Sun, 20 Apr 2025 - 655 - The Doctor Who Turned His Diaries Into A Hit Show
Adam Kay knew exactly who he wanted to play him in the TV version of his life.
After spending years working in hospitals across the UK, mostly in obstetrics and gynaecology, Adam—completely burnt out—took a break. What was meant to be a short pause turned into 14 years and counting.
During his training in the labour wards, Adam kept a diary. Those diary entries would later become a best-selling book (This Is Going To Hurt, which sold over 5 million copies), and eventually a hit TV series starring Ben Whishaw as Adam.
In this candid, emotional, and at times hilarious conversation, Adam talks about:
– The human cost of being a doctor
– Why mental health support in medicine is so urgently needed
– What changes are essential—both in the UK and here in Australia
– And… the strangest things people have turned up to hospital with inside their bodies. This episode is a must-listen for anyone who’s ever been a patient, worked in healthcare, or simply wants to understand the real cost of caring.
If you'd like to see Adam Kay live in Australia, he's currently touring the country. You can look at his tour dates here.

Fri, 11 Apr 2025 - 653 - Madeleine West On Confronting Her Monsters And Motherhood At 47
Madeleine West has lived many lives— from Neighbours’ Dee Bliss to Underbelly’s Danielle McGuire, she’s been a fixture on Australian screens for decades.
Beyond acting, she’s also an advocate, a survivor, and now, at 47, she’s stepping into a surprising new chapter... motherhood for the seventh time.
What she first thought was menopause turned out to be an unexpected pregnancy, something that took time to embrace. But that’s not the only battle Madeleine has faced. Just a few years ago, she made the courageous decision to help police uncover a pedophile—the man who abused her as a child.
In this deeply personal and powerful conversation, Madeleine opens up about:
How she came to terms with becoming a mother again at 47 The media storm that forced her to announce her pregnancy before she was ready The darkness she had to push through to become the woman she is today The moment she wore a wire to confront her abuserThis is a story of survival, strength, and reclaiming your own narrative - no matter how impossible it may seem.

Wed, 29 Jan 2025 - 637 - What Happened To Sophie Delezio [re-release]
In this conversation from the archives we go back to 2003, when a two-year-old girl captured the hearts of Australians after she was involved in an accident at her NSW childcare centre. Her name was Sophie Delezio. A vehicle crashed into the centre and caught alight, trapping Sophie and burning 85% of her body. After that accident, she lost both her legs below the knee, her right hand and ear.
Three years later, in May 2006, Sophie was hit by a car as her nanny pushed her wheelchair across the road. The car threw her 18 metres from her wheelchair and resulted in a broken jaw, broken ribs, fractured collarbone and a punctured lung as well as bleeding on her brain and a heart attack.
But after all of that, she lived. Oh boy did she live.
And this is her story.

Happy New Year - No Filter listeners - how are you going so far in 2025? Did you survive the silly season? Did you make any “new year, new me” resolutions?

Wherever you might be on the mocktail to cocktail spectrum - this conversation is for you because our guest, author and health & wellbeing coach, Sarah Rusbatch, has lived it all.
She has written a book called Beyond Booze, How to Create A Life You Love Alcohol Free’ - Sarah lived through what she describes as her own “dysfunctional relationship with alcohol” but - as you’ll hear - she’s not at all preachy, she just happens to know a lot about how hard it can be to be sober, but how good it can be on the other side.

Never has the cliche “truth is stranger than fiction” applied more than to the woman on today's episode. You couldn’t make Susan Francis’s life up - it has too many twists.
It begins with an adoption story and the mystery of her biological parents, it includes a secret sister, a heartbreaking confrontation, unexpected love and a series of events that were so dramatic that she had to write them down in a memoir just to make sense of them. It’s called The Love That Remains.

How do you prepare for prison? How do you tell your young daughters that you aren’t going to see them for a very long time?
Kerry Tucker was jailed in 2004 for one of the biggest white-collar crimes committed by a female in Victoria at the time. She’d been stealing money from her employers. She owned up to it, went through the process and spent 4.5 years behind bars in a maximum security prison away from her two daughters. Surprisingly for Kerry, jail was the making of her and she’s written a book all about it...

Tue, 31 Dec 2024 - 627 - The Day Stuart Diver Decided To Live [re-release]
It was an ordinary day on the 30th of July, 1997 in Thredbo, but at 11:35pm the earth moved. Lives were changed and lost in just a few minutes. The Thredbo Landslide happened fast. It hit two ski lodges where 19 people were sleeping. It destroyed the buildings, ripped them off their foundations, and plunged those inside under tonnes of debris and concrete.
For the first two days, we were told that there would be no survivors. However, on the morning of the third day, 66 hours after he was buried, Stuart Diver was found alive. He was the lone survivor of one of the most famous tragedies in Australia’s history.

The last few years of Abi Morgan’s life would make an incredible TV show, although you might not believe it because of the plot twists. One of those twists is that Abi herself is an Emmy-award-winning screenwriter of movies like Iron Lady, with Meryl Streep, and TV dramas like The Split.
But nothing could have prepared her for the cascading series of events that began on a very ordinary day. The crescendo of this story is that, after waking up from a coma, Abi's partner of 20 years didn't recognise her. And only her...

At the intersection of sex, marketing and the gig economy, you will find Annie Knight, who has been branded ‘Australia’s Most Sexually Active Woman’. Annie is a 27-year-old Brisbane woman who makes her own sex content and sells it to subscribers via Only Fans where she is in the top 0.02% of creators on the platform.
Only Fans became wildly popular during the pandemic, with thousands of Australians creating accounts in the hope of converting home made content - usually sexually explicit photos and videos - into cash.
But OnlyFans isn’t the golden goose of the gig economy. The vast majority of creators make very little money. And then there’s Annie. So how much does she make? And what exactly does she have to do for it?

Sun, 24 Nov 2024 - 614 - Extra: When MID Doesn't Come With Money
Simmone Jade McKinnon was - and is, to many - Stevie from McLouds Daughters. She joined that iconic Australian show fresh from another era-defining TV moment, Baywatch, with a Hollywood star fiancé on her arm and a creative career in full flight.
And then everything changed.
Simmone and her son Madigan have been living in a caravan and then a shed in her family’s back paddock for the best part of a decade. She’s been making ends meet with carer’s subsidy, odd jobs like jillaroo and by starting her own small business. When she decided to step out of a dark time and back in front of a camera for a reality show earlier this year it was very clearly with one goal in mind - the prize money.
On this episode, the first MID conversation about money, you'll hear how all that's been going for Simmone. And you’ll hear what it was like to be on one of the biggest shows in the world and get fired for what you refused to do in lingerie on a beach. How she came back from crippling panic attacks during a high-profile break-up to film wedding scenes for our viewing pleasure and, most importantly, how she’s kept moving and dreaming and pushing on as she’s been parenting her son alone on a very minimal income.
Simonne is famous but she’s not rich, and we assume those things go together. Her story might not be yours, but there’s plenty of familiar territory here. Please enjoy MID, Season 2, Episode 3: Money, with Simmone Jade Mackinnon.
