Welcome to Human Evolution, the podcast where growth gets real, patterns get exposed, and things start to look a little different. I'm Jodi Tala, Integrative Neuro-Regulation Coach and founder of Mind Drop. This is where we have the conversations that don't always get said out loud. We're unpacking emotional regulation, neuroscience, and the patterns shaping how you think, feel, and show up in the world - and what it really takes to change. For the self-aware, heart-led humans and high performers who are done running on autopilot and ready to live life on purpose. Let's go.
- 19 - Why Someone Else's Success Triggers You (Envy and the Drama Triangle)
Someone you know shares a massive win. One person hears it and goes, "How did they do that, and what could I learn?" Another starts building a case for why it was easier for them. This week Jodi unpacks what decides which way you go, sparked by Julie Chenell and Cathy Olson's episode on The Gorgeous Effect, where Julie called that second reaction, dare she say it, a victim mindset.
Jodi gets into the research on benign and malicious envy, and how the drama triangle shows you where you've handed over your power. She also looks at where your sense of agency came from in the first place, and how to step back into the part you can actually influence. When a friend's good news lands with a sting you didn't expect, this one's for you.

Tue, 06 Oct 2026 - 24min - 18 - You’re Regulating Your Nervous System. So Why Isn’t Anything Changing?
Nervous system regulation is everywhere right now, and a lot of that shift is a good thing. But it's gone from being one important piece of the puzzle to being sold as the whole answer. So when you've done the breathing and the grounding and the same patterns keep running, it's easy to land on "I've tried everything and nothing works."
Here's the reframe. Sometimes the tool did work. It just didn't do the job you expected it to do. In this episode Jodi pulls apart the different jobs inside real change: changing your state, building your capacity, and the deeper work of processing what's underneath so you can create something new. When you know which job you're actually asking regulation to do, you can finally choose a tool built to do it.
In This Episode
→ What nervous system regulation tools are actually built for, and the job they were never designed to do
→ Why "I've tried everything and nothing works" is usually the wrong conclusion
→ The difference between changing your state and building your capacity, and why it matters
→ Experiential avoidance, and when reaching for a tool quietly becomes a way of not feeling
→ Why calm was never the goal, and what more range actually gives you
→ The three jobs of change, and how to work out which one you're actually in

You said sorry. You meant it. And a few weeks later, you did the same thing again. So what was the sorry actually for?
This episode goes at the half of repair almost nobody was taught. Not the apology itself, but what comes after it: understanding the impact you had on someone, and letting it change what you do next. Jodi unpacks why the hollow sorry keeps happening, what it costs the person on the other end, and what real repair actually takes. Drawing on relationship research, the neuroscience of feeling heard, and what the justice system of all places reveals about healing a rupture.
For the self-aware, heart-led human who's tired of apologies that don't change anything, whether you're the one saying sorry or the one who keeps hearing it.
In This Episode
→ Why an apology is only part of repair, and the part almost everyone skips
→ The nervous system reason the sorry is often about you, not them
→ Intention versus impact, and why being truly heard is what lets hurt move instead of hardening into resentment
→ What restorative justice reveals about the power of hearing the impact, and what the research shows
→ Why changed behaviour is the real apology, and why repair takes capacity you can build
→ The difference between repair and reconciliation, and when repair isn't safe or appropriate

Tue, 22 Sep 2026 - 20min - 16 - Take A Break Before You Break: Why Rest Makes You More Productive
You know you need the break. You've read the burnout articles, you could explain the science to a friend, and you still keep pushing, because there's always something on a list that never seems to end. Rest keeps getting filed under "once everything's done," so it never quite arrives.
This episode is about what that's costing you. We get into the energy quadrant from Loehr and Schwartz and why performance and recovery are meant to move in a cycle. Then the harder part: why the guilt shows up the second you stop, even when you know you've gotta switch gears. Because knowing you need rest and letting yourself take it are two very different things.
For the self-aware, heart-led human who can explain exactly why rest matters and still can't let themselves take it.
IN THIS EPISODE
The hustle-and-grind trap, and why "rest when you've earned it" keeps rest permanently out of reachThe energy quadrant from Loehr and Schwartz, and why performance and recovery live on the same side while survival and burnout live on the otherWhat athletes understand about load and recovery that high performers missThe Formula 1 pit stop, and why stopping is built into the strategyThe difference between choosing recovery and being forced into it once your body arranges the break for youTimestamps

The Nervous System Emergency Kit: a circuit breaker for the moment your nervous system feels overwhelmed or hijacked. Free emotional regulation tools → grab your kit: https://minddrophq.com/emergencykit
We say "I just want to be happy" like it's the most reasonable goal in the world. And of course you want to be happy, most of us do. But somewhere along the way happiness stopped being something we feel and turned into something we chase, a finish line that keeps moving further away the closer we get.
In this episode Jodi unpacks why happiness makes a shaky goal to chase, and why the moment you start measuring it you tend to feel less of it. She looks at why this trap is so sticky for people who are good at chasing goals, then gets into what to aim at instead, so a day that doesn't feel particularly happy can still be a day that means something.
In This Episode
Why happiness is an emotion that comes and goes rather than a permanent place you arrive at, and what regulation actually means. The "when I, then" trap, and why we're so good at turning happiness into a target. The Mauss research on what happens when you place a really high value on feeling happy. Why feeling bad about feeling bad makes it worse, and the Ford and Lam work on accepting your emotions. Hedonic adaptation, why the high always fades, and the Sheldon and Lyubomirsky model. Why celebrating the win before you move the goalpost actually matters. And what to aim at instead: meaning, growth, contribution and connection, through the lens of Self-Determination Theory.

Tue, 08 Sep 2026 - 19min - 14 - Where Does Faith Fit Into Manifestation?
Where does faith fit into manifestation, and what about your part?
In this episode Jodi shares her personal take on holding faith and neuroscience at the same table, without forcing either one to explain the other away.
She gets into what science can actually measure about belief, where manifestation can tip over into blame, and why faith doesn't let you off the hook for your own part. It's the finale of the four-part manifestation miniseries.
In This Episode
Where faith and spirituality actually fit in the manifestation conversation. What science can and can't measure about belief, including the Ano and Vasconcelles research on religious coping. The two very different things people mean when they say "energy", and which one has observable mechanisms. Where manifestation tips into blame, and why that version does real harm. How faith runs through both the vision-led and the evidence-led pathway. The difference between influencing an outcome and controlling it. And why the door opening is God's part, and walking through it is yours.

Tue, 01 Sep 2026 - 19min - 13 - Why Your Brain Calls BS on Your Manifestation
When you read your manifestation goal and something in you pulls the other way, that pushback is information. This episode is about what's actually happening when the goal your conscious mind wants meets the old beliefs and nervous system predictions already running underneath it.
Jodi walks through a practical, repeatable process for reading that internal conflict instead of affirming over it: notice, regulate, clarify, clear, rewire, act, gather evidence, integrate. The aim is to get your inner world and your real-life action moving in the same direction, because that's when things actually start to shift.
In This Episode
Why your brain pushes back on a goal you consciously want. The background check your beliefs, values and identity run on every intention. How the guard dog and forecaster read a goal as a prediction of what it'll cost you. When the pushback is an old belief, and when it's clarity worth listening to. The process of notice, regulate, clarify, clear, rewire, act, gather evidence and integrate. Where tapping and neuro-rewiring fit, and what they can and can't do. And why the win only counts if you let it.

Tue, 25 Aug 2026 - 21min - 12 - Can You Manifest Something You Never Imagined?
Can you manifest a life you can't even picture? This is part two of the manifestation series, and it's for the people vision boards and affirmations have never really worked for. There are two ways to manifest: some people see the outcome first and borrow belief from the picture, and some people start moving and build belief from the evidence as they go.
Jodi gets into why a present-tense affirmation can feel like lying to yourself, what actually builds belief when you can't picture the future yet (backed by Albert Bandura's research on self-efficacy), and why getting something and being able to hold it are two very different things. For the self-aware, heart-led human who's done waiting to feel certain before they begin.
In This Episode

Tue, 18 Aug 2026 - 21min - 11 - Have We Been Using the Word Manifestation Wrong?
I love a good vision board. I also know a lot of people who've made one and then gone absolutely nowhere with it.
This week we pull the word manifestation apart, because we've bundled visualising, intention setting, affirmations and goal setting into one term and then wondered why the board on the wall changed nothing. You'll see what manifestation actually is, where a vision board really helps and where it leaves you stuck, and what Gabriele Oettingen's research says about why picturing the finished outcome can drain the very energy you'd need to chase it.
Then I walk you through exactly how I set intentions so the action is built in from the start, and the part almost everyone skips: the point where the lovely, controlled vision meets real life, and whether you've got the capacity to keep taking the next ordinary step when it stops feeling exciting.
In This Episode

Tue, 11 Aug 2026 - 25min - 10 - Self Sabotage Isn't What You Think...
Part of me was relieved when it fell apart. There, I said it. That's the thing people don't usually admit out loud, and it's where this episode starts.
This week we take the word everyone reaches for, self-sabotage, and pull it apart, because it's doing more damage than the pattern it's describing. You'll see why the relief you feel when a good thing falls over is the exact reason it keeps happening, why "self-sabotage" makes it sound like there's a defective part of you waiting to wreck things when that's usually not what's going on, and the four different engines that can be driving the whole thing.
Then the strange part: why the pull to bail gets loudest right as the thing you want is nearly in your hands. Running underneath all of it, the reframe the episode lands on: you're not your own worst enemy, a short-term protective strategy is just beating a longer-term intention.
In This Episode
- Why the relief you feel when a good thing falls apart is the reason the pattern repeats
- Why "self-sabotage" might be the wrong word, and what's actually happening instead
- The four engines underneath the behaviour: relief, protection, conflict, and capacity
- Why the pull to wreck it gets louder the closer you get to the finish line
- Why "fear of success" gives you nowhere to go, and the better question to ask instead
- What actually shifts the pattern, matched to whichever engine is driving yours

Tue, 04 Aug 2026 - 35min - 9 - Why You Attract The Same People - Even When You Swore You Wouldn't
You left the last one for good reason. You found someone new. And somehow you're right back in the same dynamic you swore you'd never repeat, just with a different face.
This week we pull apart the word everyone uses, attract, and swap it for the one that's actually happening: recognise. You'll see why the spark you feel is often your nervous system matching someone to an old blueprint, why the steady, available person can feel flat or boring, and why the same dynamic keeps rebuilding itself even when you choose someone completely different. And running underneath all of it, the line this episode won't let go of: your nervous system recognising someone does not make you responsible for what they chose to do.

Nervous system regulation is everywhere right now, and somewhere in the noise the actual meaning has gotten lost. Most people have it reduced to one small idea: stay calm. That's not what it means, and that misunderstanding is part of why it feels so out of reach.

Tue, 14 Jul 2026 - 24min - 6 - The Neuroscience Of Self Worth
This episode starts with a distinction most people skip straight past: self-worth and self-esteem are not the same thing, and most of the "self-worth work" people do is actually building the wrong one.
From there it moves into the real neuroscience, why the belief about your own value doesn't live in the same part of the brain as conscious thought, why that's exactly why affirmations can feel like lying, and the specific sequence required for a new belief to actually reach the layer required so change can take place.
In This Episode
The real difference between self-worth and self-esteem, and why most "self-worth work" is actually self-esteem workWhat the neuroscience says about where self-worth beliefs actually live in the brainWhy the affirmation feels like lying, and what's happening underneath when it doesThe four-step sequence required to build self-worth that actually holdsHow this connects to the Neuro-Regulation MethodTimestamps

Tue, 07 Jul 2026 - 16min - 5 - High Functioning Dysregulation
This episode unpacks high-functioning dysregulation, the pattern that hides behind being capable, calm and reliable, and gets praised instead of noticed.
We go through five faces of it, the neuroscience underneath each one, and a small, doable interrupt for every face so your body can finally start to loosen the patterns grip and find some relief.
It’s for the self-aware, heart-led human who looks completely on top of things while quietly running on empty. If you’ve ever wondered why rest feels uncomfortable, or why you crash the second the pressure lifts, this one’s for you.
In This Episode
• Why dysregulation can hide behind being the most capable, productive person in the room
• The five faces of high-functioning dysregulation, and how to spot which one is yours
• A simple nervous system interrupt for each face that you can start using today
• The neuroscience of why you can perform through pressure and crash later
• Why insight alone doesn’t shift the pattern, and what gives your nervous system new proof

Tue, 30 Jun 2026 - 20min - 4 - Why Insight Doesn't Create Change (And What Actually Does)
You've done the therapy. The journalling. The deep conversations in the car on the way home. You understand exactly why you do what you do. And the pattern is still running.
This episode breaks down why insight, as powerful as it feels, was never built to reach the layer your patterns actually live in. We get into the neuroscience of memory, why traditional talk therapy can sometimes reinforce the very thing it's trying to shift, and what actually needs to happen for change to hold. It's for the self-aware, heart-led human who's done the work and still finds themselves asking why nothing's changed. If you've ever said "I know why I do this, I just can't stop" — this one's for you.
In This Episode

Tue, 23 Jun 2026 - 14min - 3 - People Pleasing Isn't a Personality Trait - It's a Nervous System Response
People pleasing may have protected you in the beginning, but what is it costing you now?
This episode is about what's actually driving it, and it goes a lot deeper than boundaries or self-esteem. People-pleasing is a nervous system response, not a personality trait, a character flaw, or something you can think or decide your way out of.
We break it down across all four layers, The 4 Show Runners, and show why most approaches aimed have only ever touched the surface.
For the self-aware, heart-led human who knows they say yes when they mean no, and can't work out why understanding that has never been enough to stop it.
Key Takeaways
→ Why people-pleasing isn't a self-esteem or boundaries problem, and what layer it actually lives in
→ The neuroscience of social threat, and why the guard dog responds to rejection the same way it responds to physical danger
→ How the conditioned response forms, how it keeps getting reinforced, and why awareness alone can't reach it
→ The role of belonging and approval in keeping the pattern locked in place
→ Why the CEO can't override it in time, and what actually needs to happen at all four layers to rewire this pattern.

Tue, 16 Jun 2026 - 14min - 2 - Why You Keep Repeating Patterns You Already Understand
You can see the pattern. You've named it, traced it back, probably talked about it for years. And it still keeps happening.
This episode is about why, and it's not what most people tell you. The gap between knowing and doing isn't a willpower problem, a discipline problem, or a self-awareness problem. It's a nervous system one. We break down what's actually running underneath the pattern across four layers, The 4 Show Runners, and what has to change for new behaviour to hold under real-life pressure.
It's for the self-aware, heart-led humans and high performers who understand themselves well yet keep landing in the same reactions, decisions, and cycles, and are done accepting that as just the way they are. If you've ever thought "I know better than this, so why do I keep doing it?", this one's for you.
In This Episode
Why understanding a pattern and changing a pattern are two completely different thingsThe 4 Show Runners driving behaviour, and why most approaches only touch oneWhat your nervous system is actually doing when you react in ways you didn't intend toWhy beliefs and values are the missing piece most people never addressWhat it actually takes for new behaviour to hold under real-life pressureTimestamps
