What happens when your desires become more powerful than your belief in Allāh?In this powerful Jumu'ah Khutbah, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan explores a profound passage from the Qurʾān about people who take their desires as their god. The discussion examines how a person can have knowledge, belief, and even religious practice, yet gradually allow emotions and desires to become the ultimate standard for what they accept as right and wrong. The Khutbah explores the deeper meaning of hawa, the difference between ritual worship and true emotional devotion, and how unchecked desires can eventually prevent a person from accepting guidance.Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan also explains the Qurʾānic description of spiritual paralysis: when hearing becomes sealed, the heart becomes closed, and the eyes become unable to recognize what is happening. This is a powerful reminder to examine what truly controls our decisions, emotions, priorities, and relationship with Allāh.📌 What You Will Learn➤ The powerful meaning behind "Ra'aita" in the Qurʾān➤ How desires can gradually replace devotion to Allāh➤ The deeper meaning of hawa➤ The difference between ritual worship and emotional devotion➤ How a person can go astray despite having knowledge➤ The difference between belief-driven and emotion-driven mindsets➤ Lessons from the story of the Minister's wife in Sūrah Yūsuf➤ How unchecked emotions can distort a person's sense of right and wrong➤ The spiritual consequences of repeatedly rejecting guidance➤ Why hearing, the heart, and sight can become spiritually blocked➤ The limits of human effort in guiding someone who refuses guidance➤ Why some people become more astray than cattle🎤 About the KhutbahIn this Jumu'ah Khutbah, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan reflects on the Qurʾānic description of a person who takes their own desires as an object of devotion. The discussion begins with the significance of "Ra'aita" and why this expression creates a sense of shock and highlights something extraordinary. The Khutbah then examines how a person's relationship with Allāh can gradually be replaced by emotional desires. Rather than allowing revelation to guide their feelings, they begin allowing their feelings to determine what they believe and how they behave. The discussion also explores the difference between people who are driven by beliefs and principles and those who allow their emotions to become their ultimate authority. One of the most powerful sections examines the spiritual consequences of repeatedly rejecting guidance: hearing becomes sealed, the heart becomes closed, and the eyes become covered from recognizing the reality of one's own condition. The Khutbah concludes with lessons from Sūrah Al-Furqān and a reminder that believers are not responsible for forcing guidance upon those who refuse to use their intellect and accept the truth. The deeper question is not simply what you believe. It is: what controls you when your feelings and Allah's guidance disagree?📺 Watch LiveWatch live on YouTube and Instagram:@israfoundation🤝 Support ISRAhttps://israfoundation.com/support📅 Eventshttps://israfoundation.com/events🌐 Websitehttps://israfoundation.com📍 ISRA HQ930 W. 🎤 About the Series
Heartfelt: Softening the Heart is a weekly series with Mufti MWK exploring timeless lessons from Kitāb al-Zuhd wa al-Raqāʾiq by Imām ʿAbdullāh ibn al-Mubārak.Through Qurʾānic reflections, Prophetic guidance, stories of the righteous, and practical lessons, the series explores the things that shape the heart and strengthen our relationship with Allāh.In this session, the focus turns to companionship.
The lecture begins by exploring our natural need for connection and why Islam places so much importance on the people we surround ourselves with.It then explores the difference between relationships built around wealth, beauty, status, or other worldly interests and the deeper form of love that exists for the sake of Allāh.
The session also highlights the subtle influence of companionship. Friends can pull us toward their habits, values, and priorities without us even realizing it.The discussion then becomes practical: how can we protect ourselves from sin?
One way is to make sin difficult by creating accountability through a trusted friend, mentor, or companion who can help us stay on the right path. The lecture also draws on the wisdom of Imām al-Ghazālī, highlighting five qualities to look for in a wise companion: intelligence, good character, integrity, freedom from corruption, and freedom from excessive worldly greed. The session concludes with a powerful challenge.
Don't always wait for someone else to guide your circle.Become that person.Become the friend who reminds others of Allāh.Become the person who brings light into the room.
Thu, 27 Aug 2026 - 1h 06min - 235 - When Hatred Makes You Unjust | The Qur'an's Warning About Anger & Revenge | Nouman Ali Khan
There are moments when we feel completely certain that we are right.Someone hurt us.Someone betrayed us.Someone treated us unfairly. And suddenly, everything we want to do feels justified. But the Qur'an asks a difficult question:Is it really justice?Or has hatred quietly taken control of the heart? In this powerful Jumu'ah Khutbah, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan reflects on the Qur'anic command to stand firmly for justice and remain fair, even when anger, resentment, or hatred make fairness difficult. The reminder explores two forms of injustice. One comes from carefully manipulating words, twisting narratives, and hiding facts. The other comes from within: when anger and the desire for revenge become so powerful that they begin controlling how we think and act.
🎤 About the Reminder
In this Jumu'ah Khutbah, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan reflects on powerful lessons from the Qur'an about justice and the danger of allowing our emotions to make us unfair.
The discussion begins by showing how injustice is not always obvious. A person can manipulate words, twist a narrative, or leave out important facts without openly lying. Sometimes, injustice is carefully planned.
But there is another kind of injustice. It begins in the heart.Anger, resentment, and hatred can become so powerful that a person slowly loses control of their judgment. What they want to do to someone else may feel completely justified, even when it is no longer fair. One of the central lessons of this reminder is that hatred can redefine justice in our minds. Revenge can begin to feel righteous simply because we are hurt. The Qur'an commands believers to remain fair, even when dealing with people they dislike or people who hate them.
The reminder also explores the deep connection between fairness and taqwā. Taqwā is not something that can be separated from our relationships with people. Our Ṣalāh, fasting, Qur'an recitation, and other acts of worship do not give us permission to be unjust, cruel, or controlled by rage.
The real challenge is not simply asking, "How is my relationship with Allāh?"It is also asking: How am I with His creation?

Imam Adil Khan is a distinguished scholar and A’sharah Qārī, recognized for his exceptional command of Qur’anic recitation and his depth in the classical Islamic sciences. Originally from Maryland, Imam Adil comes from one of the earliest Muslim families in America — his father, now 92 years old, migrated to the United States in 1958. Having witnessed the era of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, his father, himself a Dāʿī, would actively give daʿwah on the streets of America during that very same era.Imam Adil’s spiritual journey began in 1987, when he met Qari Abdul Basit (رحمه الله) and was profoundly moved after hearing his recitation. This meeting became a turning point in his life. After consulting with Qari Abdul Basit, he resolved to dedicate his life to the pursuit of Islamic knowledge. He later studied Qirā’at under Qari Muhammad Fathi al-Madhi (رحمه الله) of Al-Azhar University, further refining his mastery of Qur’anic recitation. In 1988, he enrolled at Darul Uloom Dewsbury (UK), a renowned seminary that later produced many prominent American scholars such as Imam Kashif (Islamic Center of Irving), Imam Nadim Bashir (East Plano Islamic Center), and Imam Azhar Subedar (Plano). His pursuit of sacred knowledge then took him to Darul Uloom Karachi, where he studied under Mufti Taqi Usmani and Mufti Rafi Usmani (رحمهما الله) — both of whom served as his mentors, teachers, and spiritual guides.Over the past several decades, Imam Adil has taught Tafseer, Hadith, and Fiqh in various institutes, guiding students through a balanced methodology that combines rigorous scholarship with spiritual refinement. His humility, precision in Qur’anic sciences, and deep love for the Deen have inspired countless students across the United States and abroad.Imam Adil Khan is the teacher of Shaykh Mikaeel Smith (Qalam), Mufti Wasim Khan (ISRA), and many other scholars around the world. He is married and blessed with four children. His daughter, Alimah Sarah Khan, and his son-in-law, Shaykh Mikaeel Smith, are both Islamic scholars who actively serve the Dallas and wider American Muslim community.Outside his academic and teaching work, Imam Adil enjoys hiking, nature, and hunting.Fun fact: Imam Adil played quarterback for his high school football team in Maryland. For more information: israfoundation.comhttps://www.instagram.com/israfoundation/ Visit us at ISRA HQ930 W.
