He described a storm wind, fire, radiant metal, four composite beings, wheels within wheels that moved without turning, a crystal-like expanse, and a humanlike figure above a throne. Centuries later, these details became central to one of the most enduring ancient-astronaut claims: that Ezekiel was trying to describe advanced aerial technology with the language available to an ancient witness.


    This episode follows the original text through its exile setting, Ezekiel’s later temple visions, the departure of divine glory from Jerusalem, and the return-of-glory vision that closes the book’s great restoration sequence. It examines the modern reinterpretation popularized by Erich von Däniken and developed in technical detail by aerospace engineer Josef F. Blumrich, whose genuine NASA association and omnidirectional-wheel patent are often overstated in popular retellings.


    The strongest conventional interpretation sees Ezekiel’s account as a prophetic throne vision built from ancient Near Eastern imagery of storm gods, cherubim, temples, kingship, and divine mobility. Their tests on Egyptian mummy material reported cocaine, nicotine, and cannabis-related compounds in remains dating as early as about one thousand years before the common era. Cocaine was the troubling result. Its best-known natural source is South American coca, while tobacco is strongly associated with the Americas.


    The public face of the controversy became Henut Taui, a mummy generally identified as a priestess or chantress of Amun from Thebes. Follow-up work by Franz Parsche and Andreas Nerlich reported cocaine, nicotine, cotinine, and THC-related material in different tissues. The researchers argued that the internal distribution of some compounds was consistent with exposure during life, rather than simple contamination on the mummy’s surface.


    But museum mummies have often been excavated, moved, unwrapped, treated with preservatives, fumigated, displayed, and sampled over generations. Critics argue that the chain of custody is too uncertain to draw conclusions about ancient Egyptian trade. Nicotine also has possible Old World plant sources. Cocaine is harder to explain, yet no accepted archaeological evidence establishes regular Egypt-Americas contact.


    Was this evidence of contamination, an unidentified Old World plant, analytical uncertainty, or a rare ancient movement of coca across the Atlantic? The published chemical findings are real. Their historical meaning remains contested.
