Tue, 09 Sep 2025 - 28min - 57 - E51 - Sounds of Argentina: Tango vs. Rock
For years, tango and rock were seen as complete opposites.
Tango was labeled old people’s music—born in the arrabales, carried by a weeping bandoneón. Rock, on the other hand, came in loud and electric: youth, rebellion, sharp guitars, and attitude. But over time, something unexpected happened. The kids who had grown up around tango—often without choosing it—started letting traces of that music sneak into their rock.
This episode explores that generational clash that once seemed impossible to bridge, and how it ultimately gave birth to a uniquely Argentine musical identity.
Curious to hear how it all came together?

Mon, 18 Aug 2025 - 17min - 56 - E50 - Sounds of Argentina: Cumbia & Cuarteto
In Argentina, there are two rhythms you don’t just listen to—you live them: Cuarteto and Argentine cumbia.
One was born in the hills of Córdoba, the other in the working-class neighborhoods of Greater Buenos Aires. Together, they move massive crowds, shift the mood of an entire city, and even sneak their way into everyday language. It doesn’t matter if you’re in a packed club, hanging out on the sidewalk with neighbors, or riding the bus—when these rhythms kick in, something happens. Hands go up, smiles spread, and your body starts moving on its own.
But to really understand why they have that effect, we need to take a little trip back in time.

In this episode of Argentalk, we dive into a very Argentine topic: mental health and therapy. Fri, 25 Apr 2025 - 18min - 43 - E40 - Pachamama in Argentina: Ancient Rituals for the Mother Earth of the Andes
In this episode of Argentalk, we dive into a deep, ancient tradition that many visitors to Argentina have never really heard about: Pachamama. But this isn’t just a cute “Northern Argentina” postcard or a random folklore celebration—this is a living relationship with the earth: something you honor, talk to, and (according to many people) something that can also get angry if you don’t respect it. What does it mean to “feed the earth,” and why do thousands of people still do this every August 1st? Through real anecdotes, reflections, and cultural context, this episode invites you to rethink your relationship with nature—and maybe slow down for a minute in a world that never stops. Thu, 10 Apr 2025 - 19min - 42 - E39 - The Infernal Gauchos: Argentina’s Untold War for Independence
Did you know that in Salta there was a group of gauchos in red ponchoswho made an entire Spanish army panic? With barely any weapons but a brutal level of strategy, Güemes’ “Infernales” turned Northern Argentina into a nightmare for the royalists—using ambushes, lightning attacks, and local knowledge that a professional army just couldn’t match. How did they pull it off? Why didn’t Buenos Aires fully back them?
This episode tells the epic (and often overlooked) story of Martín Miguel de Güemes, the Salta strongman who helped stop Spanish invasions and made it possible for San Martín to move forward with his liberation plan. We’ll also look at how his story ends—and the key role women played in this fight. The episode is entirely in Argentine Spanish.

Thu, 08 Jul 2021 - 21min - 17 - E16 Cultural Journey to Argentina: El Rock Nacional
In this episode, I have a conversation in Rioplatense Spanish with Marcelo Lamela about the history of Argentine national rock—a genre that’s truly unique in Latin America. In Argentina, rock has often been more than music: it’s been a way to push back, to survive difficult political times, and to express who we are. We talk about iconic figures like Charly García, Spinetta, and Gustavo Cerati, and you’ll pick up the vocabulary and cultural references that come with this world. Marcelo is the founder and director of Rock Is Here, a longtime rock enthusiast turned expert, and the author of three books on the genre, including one focused on rock in Buenos Aires.

Thu, 13 May 2021 - 12min - 15 - E14 From Hunter to Nature Protectionist in Argentina
In this episode, I chat with Jaime, a wildlife ranger in Argentina’s Entre Ríos province, while I’m visiting his nature reserve on a photo safari—all in Rioplatense Spanish.
Jaime shares his story: growing up in a rural area where he sometimes had to hunt to eat, and how that experience slowly shaped his deep commitment to protecting local flora and fauna. We also talk about the region’s animals, real-life life-in-the-wild advice, and yes—what you should do if you get bitten by a yarará (a venomous snake). Can you guess his answer?

In this episode, I’m reading “The Giant Turtle” by Horacio Quiroga—a classic short story and a great, easy entry point into Argentine (and regional) literature for intermediate Spanish learners.
It follows a hunter who, seriously ill, goes into the jungle hoping to recover—and there he meets a giant turtle. What happens next is unexpected: is this encounter a fight… or the beginning of an unlikely bond?

Fri, 30 Apr 2021 - 17min - 13 - E12 Argentine Food Traditions: Dulce de Leche
In this episode of Argentalk, my husband Mariano and I talk about dulce de leche—Argentina’s ultimate sweet obsession: what we eat it with (spoiler: almost everything), why it shows up in so many classic treats like facturas and alfajores, and even how it sneaks into everyday language with expressions like “remar en dulce de leche” and “más argentino que el dulce de leche.” We also explore the (very Argentine) origin story tied to Rosas and Lavalle, compare dulce de leche to similar versions across Latin America, and share what Argentines do when they travel somewhere (like Brazil) and can’t find it.
The whole episode is 100% in Spanish, full of real conversation, cultural context, and delicious vocabulary.---

In this episode of Argentalk, I chat with Gustavo Robert—writer, history teacher, and tango lover—about lunfardo, Argentina’s iconic slang: where it came from, how tango helped spread it, and why so many everyday expressions have roots in Italian, French, African languages, and Indigenous languages like Quechua and Mapudungun. Along the way, we unpack the stories behind words like laburar, croto, and che, plus the playful world of vesre and other classic Argentine twists—all 100% in Spanish for intermediate listeners who want to understand not just what Argentines say, but where it comes from.

Wed, 04 Nov 2020 - 22min - 4 - E03 - Gauchito Gil: from war soldier to popular saint in Argentina
In this episode, you’ll meet one of Argentina’s most legendary folk saints: Gauchito Gil—a kind of Argentine Robin Hood whose story mixes war, love, betrayal, miracles, and a lot of popular devotion. We’ll go back to the 19th century (around the time of the War of the Triple Alliance) to understand who he was, why he became an outlaw, and how a single prophecy right before his death turned him into a figure people still pray to today. You’ll also learn why everything around him is red, what his roadside shrines mean, what people leave as offerings, and why there’s one thing you should never do if you don’t want to “mess with” Gauchito Gil.
