  • 277 - After 42 Years in Prison, He Walked Out Catholic

What happens when a man sentenced to life in prison discovers that no life is beyond redemption?

After serving 42 years in prison, Doug Austin is finally out. Today, he continues his mission of serving others through the Holy Family House.

🏠 Learn more about the Holy Family House:

    https://www.idahoholyfamilyhouse.org

Doug entered prison in his early twenties after a life consumed by alcohol, drugs, and eventually a crime that took another person’s life.

For decades, freedom seemed possible—but repeatedly slipped away. Doug would go before the parole board only to learn that he would remain behind bars. In 1996, his sentence was changed to fixed life, eliminating the possibility of parole.

    Doug was devastated.

He began to believe that if he wasn't worthy of being released, perhaps his entire life was unredeemable. On February 26, 1996, he decided to do something drastic.

Then, in a way he never expected, God intervened.

Doug was unexpectedly transferred to a prison in Texas. There, hearing Christian worship through the walls near his cell eventually led him back to the faith of his childhood. He gave his life to Christ, began studying Scripture, and watched addictions that had followed him into prison finally lose their grip.

    But Doug's journey wasn't finished.

When he returned to Idaho, he wanted to know something deeper: What did the earliest Christians actually believe? What happened to the Church after the Apostles?

He began devouring Church history. At first, Catholicism seemed like a bridge too far. He considered becoming Orthodox instead. But the deeper he studied, the harder it became to ignore where the evidence was leading him.

One unexpected influence was EWTN. Seeing Catholics who looked like him helped break down one of the barriers he had carried toward the Church.

Then, at Easter in 2003, Bishop Michael Driscoll came inside the prison and confirmed Doug into the Catholic Church—making Doug the first person in Idaho to be confirmed by a bishop while incarcerated.

The man who once believed his life was beyond redemption became a spiritual mentor to other prisoners.

Doug led Bible studies and Rosaries, helped prepare for Mass, and assisted other inmates on their own journeys into the Catholic Church. His ministry eventually earned him the Diocese of Boise's Guardian of the Faith Award.

And still, the parole hearings came.

Again and again, Doug faced the possibility that he might never walk out of prison. His sentence was eventually changed back from fixed life to indeterminate life, making parole possible once again. Yet freedom remained uncertain.

Years ago, an article about Doug ended with an extraordinary line:

“Doug Austin, still serving a life sentence, is a free man.”

Today, those words have an entirely new meaning.

After 42 years behind bars, Doug Austin walked out of prison.

Now, through Holy Family House, he is dedicating his freedom to serving others.

In this episode of Catholic ReCon, Doug shares an extraordinary story of crime and consequence, addiction and despair, conversion and Catholicism, rejected parole and persevering hope—and ultimately, freedom.

What happens when a Christian musician raised in the Brethren Church begins to sense that there’s trouble brewing—and finds himself called to walk the Camino de Santiago and visit Lourdes?

In this powerful testimony, he shares how God used pilgrimage, prayer, and an unexpected journey to draw him deeper into the Christian faith and ultimately toward the Catholic Church.

What began as a journey on foot became something much deeper. Through the Camino, the Rosary, the tomb of St. James, and the ancient Christian practice of pilgrimage, God began opening his eyes to a faith he hadn’t fully understood before.

This conversation is about more than walking the Camino de Santiago or going to Lourdes. It’s about what happens when God disrupts your plans, calls you somewhere unexpected, and uses the journey to help others.

If you’ve ever wondered why pilgrimage has played such an important role in Christianity—or how God can use one journey to completely redirect a life—this testimony is for you.

    ---

Linda Carl was a Vice President in banking before entering the world of yoga after choosing to become a stay-at-home mom. For nearly twenty years, she practiced and taught yoga and other New Age philosophies associated with it. After several life incidents brought her to her knees, including a brush with evil spirits, she slowly began to open up to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. In a “come to Jesus moment” when He made everything crystal clear, she completely eliminated everything related to yoga and the New Age from her life. Since then, the truths of yoga were slowly revealed to her which she artfully details in her book,Yoga Unveiled, My spiritual journey from darkness to light. She shares the many truths and dangers she was blind to for almost two decades.

She currently serves on the boards of the Legacy of Life Foundation, the Bucks County Legatus Chapter, and the Penn State Libraries Development Board. She also runs a weekly prayer Cenacle to Mary, Guardian of the Faith.
