  • 155 - The Nightclub Business, Fake Alcohol & 4AM Discipline - Malcolm "MJO" Okubo | Coffee Pump (E134)

    Konnichiwa Fam,

On this episode I sit down with Malcolm "MJO" Okubo. At 25 he co-owns some of Nairobi's biggest nightlife spots, works in fintech at Honeycoin, and runs the MJO Living on YouTube. Before any of that he was trading forex at 20, wrapping cars, importing routers through COVID and selling shawarma at a car wash. I enjoyed this one a lot. He is sharp, he is honest about the parts that did not work, and the discipline on this guy at his age is something else.

    We talk about:

    - Whether opening a nightclub in Nairobi is actually profitable

    - Why so many clubs are dead within three or four months

    - How location decides whether a club lives or dies

    - Why that side of Westlands is coming back to life

    - How brand activations and sponsors really work behind the scenes

    - Why strong weekday sales are the real test of a business

    - Theft in the nightlife industry and how managers handle it

    - The fake alcohol scare and going branch to branch scanning every bottle

    - Counterfeit everything: laptops, car parts, medicine, phone cases

    - How to tell a bottle is fake (alcohol should never freeze)

    - The 4am gym routine and 10,000 steps before 7am

    - Where that discipline actually came from

    - Getting bashed online over a watch, and going watch shopping with the guy instead

    - Dubai, a 2,500 dirham tequila bottle and the level of money being spent there

    - Forex, EM Capital at 20, car wrapping and the shawarma machine

    - Joining Honeycoin and moving money across 29 African markets

    - Why he started MJO Living and what he wants it to do for young Kenyans

    - Politics, his food chain theory of life and the number that would make him content

    Hope you enjoy the episode.

    Konnichiwa,

Ben is one of the first people I met in this industry and has been a friend ever since. He got an E in computer studies and barely got into university. He now leads Meta's edge strategy for Africa, the infrastructure that decides how fast WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook load on this continent, and he is the reason Meta landed in Mombasa before Nairobi. This is his first ever podcast!

    We talk about:

    - Serial cables, Quake, and building a network just to game

    - An E in computer studies and why it never mattered

    - Finding his first real job

    - The night out in Nairobi that ended with Ben dropping me home

    - Made redundant at 34, and the imposter syndrome after

    - The hardest thing he ever did as a manager

    - 3.6 billion people using a Meta product every day

    - Kinshasa, and why it feels like Lagos did eight years ago

    - The flowery shirts

    Hope you enjoy the episode.

  • 153 - Scuba Diving, Yale University & Global Internet Ecosystems - Nurani Nimpuno | Coffee Pump (E132)

    Konnichiwa,

Nurani Nimpuno has been shaping the internet for 25 years and most people have never heard of her. Born in Sweden to Dutch Indonesian parents, she got into tech because she liked computer games, handed out IP addresses at RIPE NCC before she knew what Unix was, spent years at APNIC and Netnod, chaired Euro-IX, sat on the team that moved internet governance out of US government hands, and then helped build the exchange point in Mombasa and Nairobi. She now runs strategy for LINX - London Internet Exchange.

This episode was recorded at the Africa Peering and Interconnection Forum (https://www.afpif.org) in collaboration with the African IXP Association (https://www.af-ix.org).

    We talk about:

    – Scuba diving with reef sharks, and why an hour underwater leaves you exhausted

    – Going back to school for an Executive MBA

    – What she learned at Yale University

    – Growing up in Sweden

    – The mango she ate in Mombasa at 11 that made her want to come back

    – Leaving a comfortable job to start an internet exchange company from scratch

    – What it really took to get the Mombasa exchange off the ground

    – Why 300 small ISPs in Kenya have never heard of peering

    – Why most of Africa's internet traffic still leaves Africa

    – Walking into rooms of older men who assumed she knew nothing

    – How LINX picks its next market, and why AS numbers tell you everything

    – Why she understands Japan less every time she visits

    Hope you enjoy the episode.

  • 152 - Batman, Faith & The Three Most Dangerous Words A Man Can Say - Michael Marras | Coffee Pump (E131)

    Konnichiwa,

Michael Marras is a former Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer turned health and performance coach, and he runs Fit Fatherhood. The whole idea behind it is that looking after yourself is not vanity, it is responsibility. Strong in the body, disciplined in the mind, present for the people who depend on you and grounded in something bigger, so you can lead your family with courage, humility and consistency.

He started out as my fitness coach, then it turned into life coaching, and somewhere along the way he became more of an elder brother to me. That is why this one is less about training and more about everything sitting underneath it.

This episode went nowhere near where I planned. I had a whole list of fitness questions lined up, peptides, steroids, all of it, and I binned the lot after a call we had the week before where Coach Mike said something that stopped me cold.

    We talk about:

    - The line that started it: when God wants an impossible task done, he takes an impossible man and crushes him

    - Italian parents in Windsor, Ontario, Sopranos meets Everybody Loves Raymond

    - Why Batman and not Superman, and how that led him into the Mounties

    - Ten years in law enforcement, meeting his wife there, and why leaving was not a mistake

    - What changed the day his first son was born

    - Why he kept the job while he built the exit

    - The mentor who told him to stop being Robin

    - Rusty the mechanical rabbit, and the dog that catches it

    - Human formation, not body transformation

    - Tie me to the mast, and building systems while you are still thinking clearly

    - Training on your worst day instead of your ideal one

    - Ten years in, and why security becomes a cage

    - Alcohol, escapism and turn up culture in Kenya

    - The three most dangerous words a man can say

    - Faith, surrender, and optimising the body while neglecting the soul

    - Why he wants you to be someone's Matt Damon

    Hope you enjoy the episode.

  • 151 - Mugabe, Cyber Cafés & Choosing Music Over Tech - Robert Nkeramugaba | Coffee Pump (E130)

    Konnichiwa,

This one comes to you from Kigali, recorded at AfPIF in August with Robert Nkeramugaba, or Bob, as everyone calls him. Bob is a system architect at Broadband Systems Corporation and has been there ten years. Outside the day job he produces music, paints, and writes poetry. We first met in Kigali back in 2021 at a point where we were both going through it, and this is the first time we have sat down on camera.

    We talk about:

    - How we met in Kigali in 2021 and why men don't have enough of these conversations

    - Why Bob's dad named him after Robert Mugabe, and why it only appears on his baptism card

    - Kigali nightlife, the new arena, and Kenyans flying in for the basketball

    - Producing an EP for a spoken word artist and building sound from African instruments

    - Painting, curation, and where to find art in Kigali

    - Born in Burundi, moved to Rwanda at ten, and the architecture degree he never got to do

    - Cyber cafes in 1999 and what it took to hand in a single university assignment

    - Using AI to sharpen his thinking rather than to produce, and the message that gave itself away

    - His first job at Rwandatel, now Liquid, and being thrown in the water on day three

    - Five years on a World Bank broadband project and what an IRU locks you into for a decade

    - Rwanda's internet arriving through Nairobi and Uganda before Tanzania opened a second route

    - Starlink, dark fibre, local CDNs, and the Rwanda and Oman tier three AI data centre

    - Gun to his head, tech or music, and why the answer was music

    Hope you enjoy the episode.
