In February of 2015, 16-year-old Becky Watts was starting a normal day. When Becky failed to show up to a lunch date planned with her boyfriend that afternoon and stopped responding to texts from family and friends, worry set in for Becky's loved ones. Just over 24 hours later, her father and stepmother reported her missing and the search began.

In the United States, the 4th of July holiday weekend is usually spent celebrating summer with friends and family, by BBQing and other outdoor activities. However, July 5, 1951 was not a celebration for Betty Jean Hansen and her family. On that day, the deadly obsession that Betty Jean's stepfather, Frank Walter Kristy had with her ended. John Alexander Lawson was born in 1976, and seemed to have a relatively normal upbringing in Clemmons, North Carolina...or at least there seemed to be nothing to indicate why John, at the age of 24 years old, seemed to radically change his personality and his name. He became Pazuzu Algarad. His name was inspired by "The Exorcist" and he claimed his mother was a Satanist (she wasn't). July 9, 2014, started off as a beautiful summer day in suburban Houston, Texas. The Stay Family consisted of seven people—Katie and Stephen (mom and dad, 33 and 39 respectively), and their five children, 15-year-old Cassidy, 13-year-old Bryan, 9-year-old Emily, 7-year-old Rebecca, and the baby of the family, 4-year-old Zachary. On this particular Wednesday, Katie and Stephen were out running errands and had left the children at home with the eldest, Cassidy at the helm. Serial killer and gross child molester Joseph Edward Duncan may not be someone whose name rings a bell, but maybe the case that brought him to justice will. On May 31, 1995, in Oslo, Norway, a woman registered as "Jennifer Fairgate" was checking into the Plaza Hotel. As she signed her registration card, no one noticed that she signed "Jennifer Fergate" and not "Fairgate". It was a very busy evening at the hotel, and the front desk employees failed to not only notice the name discrepancy, but they also never got a credit card or identification from Jennifer. A few days later, Jennifer was supposed to check out. But when she failed to do so, and also ignored several messages sent to her room TV, security was called. John George Haigh was a lazy bastard. Instead of finding gainful employment, he decided he was going to victimize wealthy people. He had gone to jail for stealing earlier in his life, and while he was in prison, he learned forgery which would help him impersonate his victims after he murdered them. January 29th, 2009 was an exciting day for children in Australia--it was the first day back to school after the long holiday break and it also was 4-year-old Darcey Freeman's very first day of school. Darcey's father was driving her, along with her two brothers to school, when he seemed to have snapped. The day prior, Darcey's parents' long divorce and custody battle finally came to an end, and her father, Arthur Freeman, was awarded much less parenting time than he wanted. Arthur felt like the courts were against him and he seethed with anger at his ex-wife, Peta Barnes the entire drive to school. Sadly, Darcey never made it to school that day and died in the most unthinkable way.

Marlene Warren loved clowns. She loved them so much, she painted many pictures of clowns, and one of her paintings is our cover photo. Marlene enjoyed clowns so much, that it was an ironic tragedy when she was murdered by one. In 1990, Marlene answered the front door to her home where she was greeted by a clown with flowers and balloons for her. In November of 2013, a Cleveland 911 operator got a frantic call from a woman. Her husband had just been shot outside of the home that they were packing up to move. It seemed like a robbery gone wrong. There were no perpetrators on site, and the man shot was still breathing--even after being shot four times. The man’s wife, rode along with EMS to the local hospital, with her husband, firefighter, William Walker. Unfortunately, William did not survive and this week's episode is about his murder.

There was a time in this country when there really were not any laws against child abuse. It wasn’t until 1975 did the State of Minnesota adopt legislation regarding child abuse and in 1971, the Minnesota State Supreme Court first heard a case concerning “battered-child syndrome”. This week’s case is about the horrific treatment and death of three-year-old Dennis Jergens, at the hands of his adoptive mother—someone who had no business ever being allowed to adopt—in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. Be forewarned, it’s horrific.

In the early morning hours of March 19, 1985, Linda Bailey Brown lost her life. When police arrived at the home, her husband, David Arnold Brown answered the door and told them his wife’s body was in their bedroom and that he thought she had been shot. Also living in the home was Linda’s 17-year-old younger sister, Patti, David’s 14-year-old daughter, Cinnamon, from a previous marriage, and David and Linda’s baby daughter, Crystal. On the morning of November 2, 1990, a Florida Power & Light crew was working on an electrical box located in a wealthy Miami Beach neighborhood. The neighborhood was known for its beachfront mansions, however, on this day, it would be known for something that would horrify the community. Tucked along the base of one of the mansion’s exterior walls was what the electrical worker first thought was a discarded lollipop wrapper. However, upon closer inspection, the worker was aghast to find the body of a very small child, wearing a t-shirt with three lollipops on the front. In 1973, Willie Steelman and Doug Gretzler met by chance. This meeting would end up being deadly for 17 people in Arizona and California that same year. During a 17-day span, Willie and Doug would kill acquaintances, strangers, and children all for what seemed to be just for the thrill. This spree killing would leave not only many dead behind, but dozens more traumatized over losing their friends or loved ones. Ultimately, what they did landed them on death row in Arizona, and neither of them saw another day of freedom after their sentencing.

Ann Hoover bought her first home in 1995 in the Pittsburg, Pennsylvania neighborhood of South Oakland. This neighborhood was somewhere that needed a lot of TLC (tender loving care) and Ann, along with her neighbors, were excited to rehab the area. Everyone including Ann and her next-door neighbor, Roy Kirk, looked forward to the transformation and had wonderful and exciting plans for their neighborhood. However, when Roy started doing things to his home that damaged Ann's, Ann felt her only path to recouping her losses was to eventually go to court.

Christine Paolilla had a tough childhood. Her father died in an accident when she was little and she also suffered from alopecia which caused her to have very low self-esteem. During her early school years, she had a tough time at school when she was the victim of teasing and was picked on quite a bit. This all changed when her family moved to Friendswood, Texas, and was befriended by two of the most popular girls in the high school. Rachel and her baby daughter were found murdered in their bed on January 20th, 2006 in Massachusetts. They were shot to death while Rachel held baby Lillian Rose in her arms. Rachel's husband Neil, originally from England was nowhere to be found and police launched a hunt for him which took them all way over to Europe.

South Central Los Angeles in the late 1980s was a terrible place to be. The area was rampant with crime, drugs, and a struggle to survive. Many women turned to sex work to either help feed their addiction or to feed their families. As many of you know, police tended to turn a blind eye when dead sex workers were found, and they had an attitude like the victims were disposable. Because of this attitude, serial killers often made South Central L.A. their hunting grounds, and Lonnie Franklin, Jr. was one of them. Nicknamed "The Grim Sleeper" due to the extended supposed break he took in killing--Lonnie's true victim count will never be known.

In August 1985, the Bamber family was murdered. Neville and June Bamber were killed along with their 6-year-old grandchildren, twins Nicholas and Daniel. The twins’ mother, 28-year-old Sheila was also found dead, and at first, the police believed that Sheila annihilated her family and then killed herself. The body of a young woman was found on November 16, 1969, off Mulholland Drive in Los Angeles, California, only a few short miles from where The Manson Family had murdered several people that summer. The woman had no ID and no significant identifying marks, and while the Los Angeles Police Department tried to discover her identity, they were unsuccessful. The woman was given the moniker Jane Doe 59. Jane Doe 59 and another woman, Marina Habe, whose body was found in January 1969, would be cold cases for the LAPD and would cause them to wonder if they were victims of The Manson Family or had met their ends via some other violent means. Eight-year-old Cherish Perrywinkle was out shopping with her mother, Rayne, on June 21, 2013, near Jacksonville, Florida. Rayne was struggling financially when she thought she had been blessed by a kind stranger, especially when that stranger told her that he and his wife had a $100 gift card for Walmart to give to her and he wanted her to buy whatever she needed. The kind stranger was Donald James Smith--who wasn't kind at all. He was a lifelong child predator, who fell through the cracks in the Florida prison system. A month prior, Donald was still in prison, but on that fateful day in June, he was out preying on another unsuspecting child. As the evening wore on, Cherish and her two little sisters grew hungry, and Donald offered to buy them cheeseburgers at the McDonald's that was inside Walmart. Donald and Cherish went to get the cheeseburgers, but instead, Donald led Cherish out of the store and she was never seen alive again. In 1974, Michael and Christine Taylor joined a "Charismatic Christianity" movement after Michael suffered from a debilitating back injury resulting in depression. An exorcism was performed on him overnight which allegedly cast out 40 demons. By the early morning hours, only three demons were left: insanity, murder, and violence. Those who performed the exorcism were too tired to cast out the remaining evil spirits and sent Michael home. Two hours later, he was arrested for the barbaric murder of his wife.

In 2019, Keyona Griffin called 911 and whispered for them to please hurry because she was about to die. In the call, she told the dispatcher that her aunt had already been murdered and she was going to be next. But the urgency in her voice somehow got lost in translation, and the police left after knocking on her door and getting no answer.

Keyona's death and the murder of her aunt set in motion a sequence of events that resulted in two more people being killed. On January 14, 2003, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call of a possible body found in a ravine off the Ortega Highway in California. When the homicide investigators showed up, they found the remains of a woman missing her head and hands, wearing only a pair of underwear.
