As one of the largest nature reserves in the world, measuring around half the size of Switzerland, Etosha National Park is located in northern Namibia. The name "Etosha" has its origin in the language of the Ovambo and means something like "big white place". It's a very fitting name: the Etosha pan is covered all over with a silvery-white salt-clay crust. The additional year-round sparse vegetation gives the pan its characteristic mystical coloring.

Anyone who wants to volunteer in Namibia or is particularly interested in big cats and the carnivores of this country will probably stumble across Naankuse sooner or later. The name Naankuse – or actually N/a'n ku sê – comes from the San language and means as much as “God will protect us”.
The Naankuse Foundation, which over the years has developed into a renowned conservation organisation, was founded by Marlice and Rudie van Vuuren and combines animal protection in wildlife sanctuaries with social commitment in the form of schools and a clinic.
The lodges of the Naankuse Foundation are spread all over Namibia and offer a variety of activities. And if you don't just want to watch but lend a hand as well, you've come to the right place: Volunteers can help out everywhere at Naankuse and support research in the reserve, track animals and collect data, build camps and waterholes or play and learn with the children at school. Volunteer tourism is also an important source of funding for the organisation.

Pap is one of Namibia's traditional dishes par excellence, and a true all-rounder at that. The cereal porridge – pap is Afrikaans for porridge or gruel – is made from Mahangu or maize and served in every Namibian household at every conceivable time of day. Mahangu, or pearl millet, is mainly grown in northern Namibia. Traditionally, the grain is threshed by hand, ground into flour with blunt tools and separated from dirt with the help of the wind. If the pap is prepared with mahangu, it has a greyish colour.
Mielie pap on the other hand is made from maize flour and is white. Even though the appearance and taste differ depending on the grain, the way of preparing the pap is the same. The important things here are the right ratio of water and flour, timing and especially perseverance when stirring the pap. But don't worry, you can also slowly get accustomed to the traditional way of cooking pap. Supermarkets sell instant pap that you only have to mix with water or milk in order to enjoy a nice meal. Usually, pap is served with meat and sauce. But there are also sweet versions that are refined with condensed milk, for example. No matter which variation sounds best to you: You should definitely try pap whilst travelling through Namibia!

Hardly any travellers are aware that the idyllic coastal town of Swakopmund, on the outskirts of the city, is still home to mass graves from the 1904-1907/08 genocide of the Ovaherero and Nama people. One of the country's largest concentration camps was also located in this now quiet and tranquil town. Laidlaw Peringanda, the founder of the Genocide Museum in Swakopmund, offers city tours with this historical focus and invites you to personal lectures. The atrocities of the past should not be forgotten. To restore the dignity of the victims the artist, historian and activist dedicated his work to this important cause. This meant that Namibian people were to be divided into their different ethnic groups and had to live in the areas which were chosen for them.
