The Grace and Grit Podcast takes the health fairy tale you've heard all your life and turns it upside down and inside out, helping women rebuild their relationship with their body once and for all. Placing the focus on love and respect, rather than the aggressive demands and unrealistic expectations that have become the norm, Courtney Townley is determined to help women mend the fabric of what is driving the female health story.
- 811 - Episode 709: What Gets the Best of You—and What Gets the Scraps?
We say our health matters. Our relationships matter. Creativity matters. Joy matters. Being present for the people we love matters.
But do those things actually get the best of us?
Or do they get whatever energy happens to be left after work, errands, obligations, messages, problems, and everyone else's requests have taken their share?
In this episode, I'm inviting you to look at priorities through a slightly different lens—not simply where your time goes, but where the most alive, focused, present version of you goes. Because those two things aren't always the same.

Tue, 03 Nov 2026 - 06min - 810 - Episode 708: Your Energy Is Not an Unlimited Resource
We're pretty good at understanding that money is finite. If there's $300 in the account, spending $900 is eventually going to create a problem.
And yet, we often refuse to apply the same logic to our energy.
We make plans based on the energy we wish we had, judge ourselves for not being able to handle more, and keep making withdrawals long after our internal account is flashing insufficient funds.
In this episode, we're talking about capacity: what it actually means, why it changes, and why respecting it has nothing to do with weakness. Especially as we head into a season notorious for asking women to spend more while replenishing less.

Mon, 02 Nov 2026 - 06min - 809 - Episode 707: When Your Life No Longer Fits Who You're Becoming
There comes a point in midlife when the strategies, expectations, roles, and routines that once worked beautifully start creating more friction than flow.
Our instinct is often to assume the problem is us. We need to try harder, get more disciplined, become more organized, or somehow get back to the woman we used to be.
But what if the friction is telling you something else?
In this episode, I'm exploring what happens when you keep trying to operate from an outdated version of yourself—and the question that can help you distinguish between something that needs more effort and something you may have simply outgrown.

Sun, 01 Nov 2026 - 10min - 808 - Episode 706: Finishing Strong vs Finishing Perfect
Strong does not always mean pushing harder.
Sometimes it means knowing when to rest, when to ask for help, and when to give yourself permission to release something gracefully.
In this episode I challenge the perfectionism that drives so many women to abandon everything in the final stretch of the year, and make the case that finishing strong is a personal definition, not a performance standard. Strong might look like protecting your sleep through the holidays. It might look like asking for help with something you have been carrying alone. It might look like choosing one thing to let go of rather than doing everything imperfectly. The year you finish on your own terms, aligned with your own values and your own version of what strong means, is the year worth building toward.

Sat, 31 Oct 2026 - 05min - 807 - Episode 705: The Woman You Want to Be on January 1st Is Built Right Now
Every January, millions of women vow to start fresh. And most of them are starting from a significant deficit.
What if the preparation started now instead?
In this episode I use the analogy of preparing for a serious hike. You would not sign up for the hardest trail of the year and then spend the months beforehand eating poorly, skipping training, and letting everything slide. Yet that is precisely how most women approach the new year. The version of you who shows up on January 1st is not created by a resolution. She is built in the ordinary, unglamorous, no-one-is-watching days of October and November. Every choice between now and then is contributing to who she is.

Fri, 30 Oct 2026 - 06min - 806 - Episode 704: The Comparison Trap Gets Worse in the Fourth Quarter
Something specific happens at the end of the year that makes comparison particularly sharp.
The natural impulse to take stock collides with the curated highlight reels of everyone around you. And the result is a particular kind of pain that deserves a direct response.
In this episode I explore why year-end amplifies comparison and offer the most reliable antidote I know: an honest inventory of your own year. Not just the wins. Both the highs and the lows. I share that this year has contained some extraordinary highs and some very deep lows for me personally, and that holding both with equal honesty is what keeps other people's highlight reels from having so much power. Your real life, in all its complexity, is so much more interesting than anyone else's curated version.

Thu, 29 Oct 2026 - 06min - 805 - Episode 703: What Does Your Body Need This Time of Year?
This time of year, a lot of attention goes toward what other people need.
What the family needs. What the gatherings require. What the season demands.
And quietly, without much fanfare, the woman who is often managing most of it stops appearing on her own list.
In this episode I redirect the question inward. What do you need to move through the next eight weeks with your health and your sense of self reasonably intact? What practices would you need to protect? What would you need to ask for? What would you need to say no to? The season will fill whatever space you give it. And the space you do not claim for yourself will absolutely be claimed by something else.

Wed, 28 Oct 2026 - 06min - 804 - Episode 702: Rest Before the Rush Is a Strategy
In endurance sports there is a practice called tapering. In the weeks before a major race, athletes deliberately reduce their training volume.
Not because they are giving up. Because they understand that showing up to the biggest demand of the season at full capacity requires strategic rest beforehand.
In this episode I make the case for applying that same logic to the most demanding stretch of your year. The instinct when a big season approaches is to push harder beforehand. The smarter move is to pull back deliberately and build your reserves before the season asks you to spend them. I share how I apply this in my own life and offer a practical way to identify your personal race day and design a taper around it.

Tue, 27 Oct 2026 - 06min - 803 - Episode 701: How to Protect Your Non-Negotiables When Life Gets Full
The season will expand to fill whatever space you give it.
You get to decide how much that is.
In this episode I distinguish between what is truly non-negotiable and what is simply a preference, and make the case that the former list is usually shorter than most people think. I also name the mechanism by which non-negotiables erode, not through one dramatic decision but through a series of small, reasonable-seeming compromises that compound into a significant deficit. And I offer the two things that protect against that pattern: clarity about what you are actually protecting, and the pre-commitment to protect it before the pressure arrives to test you.

Mon, 26 Oct 2026 - 09min - 802 - Episode 700: The Difference Between Coping and Recovering
Coping and recovering can look remarkably similar from the outside. Both involve a pause in the difficulty. Both offer some form of relief.
But they produce completely different outcomes over time.
In this episode I define the distinction clearly: coping is buffering, reaching for something that temporarily alters how you feel without changing what produced the feeling. Recovering is addressing the source. Having the difficult conversation. Making the hard decision. Backing off when the world expects you to charge forward. I share what coping most commonly looks like in midlife women and offer the most useful diagnostic question I know for telling the two apart: am I feeling better, or am I just feeling less?

Sun, 25 Oct 2026 - 07min - 801 - Episode 699: Your Relationship With Alcohol Deserves an Honest Look
There is something interesting about the things we have done long enough that we stop questioning them.
They become invisible. We cannot imagine life without them. Not because life without them would actually be worse, but because we have never given ourselves enough distance from them to find out.
In this episode I address the claim that alcohol does not really affect you, which is one I have heard many times over thirty years in the wellness industry and which the science simply does not support. I also explore the normalization problem, how something can become so woven into the social fabric of our lives that honest evaluation becomes genuinely difficult, and make a non-prescriptive but honest case for giving yourself enough distance to actually feel the difference.

Sat, 24 Oct 2026 - 09min - 800 - Episode 698: Self-Expression Is a Health Practice
There is a particular kind of aliveness that comes from doing something that is completely, authentically yours.
Not a template. Not someone else's version of how it should be done. Not a performance calibrated to someone else's expectations. Yours.
In this episode I make the case that accessing that aliveness is not a luxury. It is a health practice. I share the contrast between what it has felt like to deliver work to someone else's template versus what it feels like right now, approaching a speaking engagement in Nashville that could not feel more fully mine. The physiological difference between performing and expressing is real. And building a life with more of the latter is one of the most health-promoting investments available.

Fri, 23 Oct 2026 - 08min - 799 - Episode 697: The Art of Saying No Without Explaining Yourself
Most of us were never taught to say no cleanly.
We were taught to soften it, justify it, apologize for it, and wrap it in so much explanation that the other person barely registers it as a no at all.
In this episode I make the case that the compulsion to over-explain your no is not politeness. It is people-pleasing. And it is costing you more than you realize. I share my own practice of declining social invitations that do not fit my capacity without a paragraph of justification, and offer what I have found to be a clean, warm, and complete alternative. The version of you who can hold a boundary without apology has a great deal more energy for the things she is actually saying yes to.

Thu, 22 Oct 2026 - 06min - 798 - Episode 696: Finding Your Center
Most of us treat feeling centered as something that happens to us when circumstances are favorable.
But what if center is not something you feel when things are right? What if it is something you return to regardless of what is happening around you?
In this episode I define center not as a mood but as a relationship with yourself, specifically the condition of being grounded in your values, regulated in your body, and oriented toward what matters now. I also introduce a framework involving three versions of yourself that I find deeply useful: the past self as mentor who reveals your patterns, the future self as the north star who clarifies your direction, and the current self as the integration of both. All three are available to you. And together they make the return to center faster, cleaner, and more sustainable.

Wed, 21 Oct 2026 - 09min - 797 - Episode 695: Regulating Your Nervous System Will Make Some People Uncomfortable
When you start doing the work of regulating your nervous system, something interesting happens.
You feel better. You make clearer decisions. You stop absorbing other people's chaos quite so readily.
And some of the people around you find that deeply unsettling.
In this episode I explain why the friction that comes with growing into a more regulated version of yourself is not a sign that you are doing something wrong. It is often a sign that you are doing something right. The people in your life whose nervous systems have been calibrated to your old patterns will feel the change. Their discomfort is about their nervous system, not your choices. You are not responsible for managing it. You are responsible for staying the course.

Tue, 20 Oct 2026 - 06min - 796 - Episode 694: Emotional Hunger vs Physical Hunger
We spend enormous amounts of time and energy managing what we eat.
Very few of us have been taught to ask why we are eating.
In this episode I explore the critical distinction between physical hunger, which builds gradually, is satisfied by food, and stays satisfied, and emotional hunger, which arrives suddenly, is often specific to a particular food, and is not resolved by eating. I share the emotional hungers I see most frequently in the women I work with: a hunger for time alone, for being truly seen and understood, for permission to meet their own needs. Food temporarily quiets these hungers. It cannot satisfy them. And the gap between what the hunger is actually asking for and what food can provide is where the cycle lives.

Mon, 19 Oct 2026 - 08min - 795 - Episode 693: Accountability Tools vs Self-Leadership
The wellness market is full of tools designed to hold you accountable.
And most of them are genuinely useful. But there is something none of them can do. And understanding that distinction might be the most important thing about using them well.
In this episode I make the case that tools are multipliers, not foundations. A food tracking app cannot tell you why you are eating. A recovery monitor cannot distinguish between genuine rest and convenient avoidance. The women who get the most out of accountability tools are the ones who already have a foundation of self-awareness and self-knowledge that allows them to use the data honestly. I share the one free practice that builds that foundation better than any app, and offer questions worth asking before you invest in the next tool.

Sun, 18 Oct 2026 - 08min - 794 - Episode 692: Find Out Who You Are and Do It on Purpose
Dolly Parton once said: find out who you are and do it on purpose.
In a world that constantly invites us to be something other than ourselves, doing it on purpose is a radical act.
In this episode I use Dolly's life as a masterclass in self-leadership. She was told early in her career to change the way she dressed to appeal to a wider audience. She did not. She was pressured repeatedly to use her platform to express political opinions. She declined. Decade after decade, in an industry designed to reshape people into whatever the market wanted, she remained distinctly, completely herself. That is not stubbornness. That is a woman who knew herself so thoroughly that external pressure did not find much purchase. This episode is a tribute to that kind of knowing, and an invitation to find it for yourself.

Sat, 17 Oct 2026 - 06min - 793 - Episode 691: What You Practice Now You Will Live in December
Every year, millions of women arrive in January exhausted, depleted, and vowing to start over.
And every year, the same pattern produced that outcome: a slow unraveling that began somewhere in October.
In this episode I make a direct challenge to the fourth-quarter slide, the quiet permission most women give themselves to let their health practices slip in the name of seasonal busyness. The habits you are building right now are the ones you will have available when the season gets hard. Consistency with the fundamentals during October and November does not just maintain your health. It determines who shows up in December and who arrives in January.

Fri, 16 Oct 2026 - 07min - 792 - Episode 690: The Sleep Divorce and Other Brave Sleep Decisions
There is a decision that a growing number of women are making quietly, usually without telling many people, because they are not sure how it will be received.
They are choosing to sleep apart from their partners. Not as a statement about their relationship. As a statement about their health.
In this episode I make the case for the sleep divorce as a practical, loving, intelligent choice for midlife women whose hormonal shifts have made shared sleeping arrangements consistently disruptive. I challenge the story that sleeping apart means something is wrong, and offer two words that remove the weight of permanence from the decision entirely: for now. For now is a complete sentence. And it might save both your health and your relationship.

Thu, 15 Oct 2026 - 06min - 791 - Episode 689: Letting Go as a Form of Nutrition
We talk about nutrition almost exclusively in terms of food.
But there is another kind of nourishment that rarely gets discussed: the kind that becomes available when you release an identity that no longer fits who you are becoming.
In this episode I explore the identities many midlife women carry past their expiration date: the caretaker, the overachiever, the one who never asks for help. These identities served a purpose once. But held too long, they become constraints rather than descriptions, and the energy spent maintaining them costs more than most people realize. Releasing an outdated identity is not loss. It is the creation of space for something more true. And that space is its own form of deep nourishment.

Wed, 14 Oct 2026 - 07min - 790 - Episode 688: Boundaries Are Not a Personality Trait
There is a story we tell about boundaries that sounds like this: some people just have them and some people do not.
Today I want to dismantle that story completely.
In this episode I make the case that boundaries are a skill, not a fixed character trait, and that the women who appear effortlessly confident at setting them have simply practiced more. I also speak directly to the guilt that arrives with the first few attempts, which is not evidence that you did something wrong but simply the sound of an unfamiliar muscle working for the first time. The capacity to hold a boundary cleanly, and to survive the discomfort on the other side, is something that accumulates into confidence through repetition.

Tue, 13 Oct 2026 - 05min - 789 - Episode 687: The Portfolio Mindset for Your Body
What if you thought about your body the way a smart investor thinks about a financial portfolio?
Some assets are highly liquid and relatively easy to adjust. Others take years, even decades, to build, and are worth protecting above almost everything else.
In this episode I use my own recent DEXA scan results to illustrate the portfolio analogy in a way that is concrete and personal. My body fat came back higher than I would like. My muscle mass and bone density came back exceptional. And understanding what each of those assets actually represents, and how differently they respond to time and effort, completely changed how I felt about the numbers. Protect the retirement account. Adjust the checking account. Stop letting the most liquid asset in the portfolio dominate the entire conversation.

If you do not define what enough means for yourself, you will spend your entire life chasing it.
And here is the cruelest part: you will never catch it.
In this episode I challenge the wellness industry's infinite improvement loop, the idea that there will always be another five pounds, more muscle, better biomarkers, another protocol, and make the case that defining enough is not settling. It is one of the most sophisticated acts of self-leadership available. I also share a four-sentence exercise that cuts through the noise and helps you identify what enough actually looks like for you in this season, why it is enough, what more would cost you, and what you want to do with the energy you stop spending on chasing it.

The fourth quarter of the year has a particular quality to it. Demands increase. Schedules fill. Other people's needs multiply.
And if you have not decided in advance who you want to be through all of it, the season will make that decision for you.
In this episode I introduce one of the most powerful self-leadership strategies available for navigating a demanding season: pre-deciding. Before the pressure arrives. Before the calendar fills. Before you are in the middle of the storm trying to make your best decisions from a depleted state. Before you follow anyone else's food rules, do you even know what your own are?
And where did the beliefs you are currently living by actually come from?
In this episode I make the case that most women are living by a food philosophy they never consciously chose, assembled from family messages, diet culture, and whatever the wellness trend of the season happens to be. I share my own food philosophy as an example of what a personal, self-led approach can look like, and introduce the concept of integrity pain, the quiet cost of eating in ways that are out of alignment with what you actually believe. Your food philosophy does not need to be elaborate. It needs to be honest and genuinely yours.

There is a version of commitment that has nothing to do with integrity.
It is the stubborn adherence to a decision you made in a different season of your life, with different information, as a different version of yourself.
In this episode I make the case that changing your mind is not weakness. It is wisdom accumulated through experience. I share my own journey with juice fasting, something I was genuinely fascinated by in my late twenties and have since moved well away from, as an illustration of what it looks like to evolve rather than abandon. I also offer a practical test for telling the difference between quitting and growing: are you leaving because it stopped working, or because it got hard?

You would not expect a professional athlete to train at peak intensity fifty-two weeks a year.
Their coach would never allow it.
In this episode I make the case that your life operates on the same principle as athletic training: periods of high demand require recovery on the other side, and applying expansion-season expectations during a recovery season is one of the most common and costly mistakes in self-leadership. I introduce three seasons worth recognizing, expansion, maintenance, and recovery, and challenge the cultural narrative that discipline means pushing hard all the time. Discipline is not the enemy. Chronic discipline is.

Wed, 07 Oct 2026 - 07min - 783 - Episode 680: How You Show Up Is a Choice
There are two sentences I use in coaching that have the power to completely shift how someone moves through a difficult relationship.
They are not complicated. But sitting with them honestly requires a particular kind of courage.
In this episode I share those two sentences and the story behind why I started using them: my own experience caring for my father through a complex and sometimes heartbreaking health journey. When I stopped trying to change his behavior and started asking what else might be possible or true, something shifted. Not in him. In me. The episode explores what it means to choose who you want to be in the presence of what someone else is doing, and why that choice is always available even when it does not feel like it.

There is a voice that shows up every time you step in front of the mirror. It has opinions. It compares, it critiques, it comments on everything.
And most of us have been so immersed in it for so long that we have stopped noticing it is even there.
In this episode I make the case that the internal narrative running in your head while you get dressed is not neutral. It is a health variable. The body does not distinguish between an external threat and an internal one, and the daily verdict delivered in the mirror activates a stress response that has a real cumulative physiological cost. I also explore where these stories came from, how to create distance from them, and what it looks like to shift from criticism to curiosity about the body you actually live in.

Most people spend their lives chasing success without ever stopping to define what that word means to them.
And the cost of that oversight is enormous.
In this episode I make the case that if you do not define success, you will never reach it. You will just keep running. I share what success means to me in this season of my life, which has nothing to do with accolades or external validation and everything to do with time, freedom, and genuine presence with the people and work I love. And I offer a framework for building your own definition, including the most clarifying question I know: enough for what?

Sat, 03 Oct 2026 - 08min - 780 - Episode 677: Resentment Is a Signal, Not a Sentence
Resentment has a bad reputation. We treat it like something to be ashamed of, pushed through, or managed away as quickly as possible.
But resentment is not the problem. It is a message.
In this episode I make the case that resentment almost always has the same origin story: you gave something without asking for what you needed in return, or you kept saying yes when you meant no, and the feeling is pointing directly at that gap. I share a personal example from my own career of resentment that had nothing to do with the other person and everything to do with something I had never asked for. And I offer a practical framework for reading the signal rather than suppressing it, drawing on Harriet Lerner's work on anger as a legitimate emotional messenger.

Fri, 02 Oct 2026 - 07min - 779 - Episode 676: Your Power Statement
Most of us make decisions reactively. Something comes up and we respond based on how we feel in that moment, what someone else needs, or what seems like the path of least resistance.
A power statement changes that entirely.
In this episode I introduce one of the most useful self-leadership tools I know: a personal declaration of who you are when you are operating at your best. I share my own power statement, explain how I use it as a daily filter for decisions big and small, and walk you through a simple fill-in-the-blank exercise to start building yours. When I am standing fully in my power, I am a woman who... I can... In devotion to... Those three prompts, answered honestly, become a compass you wrote for yourself. And once you have one, you will wonder how you ever made decisions without it.

Thu, 01 Oct 2026 - 10min - 778 - Episode 675: Are You Becoming More Alive as You Age?
We have a lot of metrics for health.
Steps, sleep scores, bloodwork, body composition, VO2 max. And I am not dismissing any of them.
But there is a question underneath all of them that rarely gets asked directly: are you becoming more alive?
In this episode I explore aliveness as a measure of health, not just physiological health but the quality of your engagement with your own experience. You can have excellent lab work and feel completely flat. You can be navigating genuine health challenges and still feel more alive than you have ever been. The opposite of aliveness is not death. It is going through the motions.
I share what I believe produces aliveness: movement, real connection, meaning, and the willingness to keep being curious about a world that always has more to show you. And I leave you with the question worth asking regularly and honestly: are you becoming more alive as you age?

Wed, 30 Sep 2026 - 07min - 777 - Episode 681: The Power of Critical Thinking for Your Health
The wellness world is extraordinarily good at selling certainty.
And most of us, somewhere between the compelling testimonial and the limited-time offer, stop asking the most important question available: does this actually make sense for me?
In this episode I make the case that critical thinking is one of the most underrated health skills available. Women dive headfirst into extreme programs, expensive supplements, and elaborate morning routines that have nothing to do with their actual definition of health or success, and then wonder why they cannot sustain them. I offer a practical set of filter questions to apply before buying into anything new, and make the case that your own code, your values and your definition of health, is the most powerful evaluation tool you will ever have.

Tue, 06 Oct 2026 - 06min - 776 - Episode 674: Stop Gaslighting Your Own Body
Your body is sending you signals constantly.
Hunger. Fullness. Fatigue. Tension. Overstimulation. The need to move. The need to stop.
And most of us have spent years overriding those signals so consistently that we can no longer reliably read them.
In this episode I introduce the concept of interoception, the body's ability to sense its own internal state, and make the case that rebuilding this relationship may be one of the most important health skills available. I also explore the gaslighting pattern we apply to ourselves: you are not really tired, you can push through, you do not need a break, you are just being dramatic. The body stops being heard until we find ourselves genuinely unable to tell what we actually need.
Restoring this relationship is not complicated. It is just slow. And it starts with one practice: before you react, pause and ask what your body is actually telling you.

It is too hot. It is too cold. There are no sidewalks in my neighborhood. I do not have the right shoes. I do not have enough time.
We have become extraordinarily creative at making one of the most basic and universally available health practices feel inaccessible.
In this episode I gently dismantle the excuse taxonomy: weather excuses, infrastructure excuses, and time excuses. I make the case that almost none of them are as insurmountable as they feel, and that the threshold for what counts as acceptable outdoor conditions has simply crept too high. I also explore what we have lost by staying in, the restorative quality of attention that natural environments provide, and how to reduce the friction between you and outside until going out becomes the default rather than the deliberate choice.

Mon, 28 Sep 2026 - 06min - 774 - Episode 672: The Case for Eating With Other People
In the Blue Zones, the regions of the world where people consistently live past 100 in good health, researchers kept finding the same things.
And one of the most consistent was communal eating.
In this episode I draw on Dan Buettner's Blue Zones research to make the case that eating with other people is not just pleasant. It is protective. Shared meals slow us down, almost automatically. They improve digestion, reduce intake, and create a quality of connection at the table that is hard to replicate anywhere else. Vulnerable things get said. Laughter comes more easily.
I share that we have dinner as a family every single night, not because it is always perfect, but because the ritual of it sends a signal that the people at this table matter enough to show up for. And I make the case for how simple the starting point actually is.

Sun, 27 Sep 2026 - 05min - 773 - Episode 671: Stop Trying to Get Your Old Body Back
It is not a privilege that our bodies change.
It is a privilege that we lived long enough to change.
In this episode I challenge the assumption that a past version of your body was the standard against which all future versions should be judged. Bodies change because life happens. Because hormones shift, experiences accumulate, and time passes in a living system that is always responding to its environment. A body that never changed would be a body that was not fully alive.
I use the analogy of a thirty-year-old oak tree: you would not look at its wide trunk and deep roots and mourn that it is no longer the sapling it was at five. The growth and weathering are the point. And I offer a reframe for what forward actually looks like: understanding what your body genuinely needs at this age and stage, and shifting the measure of success from how the body looks to what it can do.

Sat, 26 Sep 2026 - 05min - 772 - Episode 670: Your Environment Is Coaching You
In 2012, Google noticed its employees were eating too much candy.
Rather than lecturing them about nutrition or appealing to their willpower, a team of behavioral scientists did something much more interesting. They moved the M&Ms.
In this episode I use Google's Project M&M, in which simply placing candy in opaque containers led to 3.1 million fewer calories consumed in seven weeks with nothing forbidden, to make the case that behavior follows design rather than intention. Your environment is making certain behaviors easier and others harder before you make a single conscious decision. The only question is whether you designed it that way or inherited it.
I also use the casino as a cautionary illustration of how powerful deliberate environmental design can be, and offer a practical framework for auditing your own kitchen, phone, and calendar through the same lens.

Fri, 25 Sep 2026 - 06min - 771 - Episode 669: The Return on Ordinary Days
Almost no one talks about the Tuesday.
The ordinary, unmemorable, nothing-particularly-special Tuesday that is, in fact, the primary unit of a life.
In this episode I make the case for investing in ordinary days with the same intentionality we bring to peak experiences. Drawing on Daniel Kahneman's peak-end rule, which describes how our memory weights peak moments and endings far more than the long middle, I explore how we can be heavily distorted toward the dramatic while the actual daily texture of our lives goes largely unexamined.
A one percent improvement applied consistently produces results that feel disproportionate to the effort. A one percent erosion does the same in the other direction. Tuesdays are where both happen. And a life built from Tuesdays lived with care looks, over time, completely different from a life built from Tuesdays merely survived.

Thu, 24 Sep 2026 - 07min - 770 - Episode 668: Your Sleep Is a Report Card
Sleep is not a switch.
It is a harvest. And what you harvest at night depends almost entirely on what you planted during the day.
In this episode I reframe sleep as the report card your daily choices write about themselves. The quality of your night is being shaped all day long: by the light you are exposed to, by whether your brain gets any processing time, by what you eat and when, and by how activated your nervous system is by the time you lie down.
I walk through exactly what the day writes on the night: screens suppressing melatonin, an unprocessed brain surfacing its backlog at 3am, alcohol disrupting sleep architecture while still letting you fall asleep. And I offer what actually plants better: movement, morning light, a genuine processing window before bed, and parenting your brain during the day so it does not have to find its quiet at midnight.

Wed, 23 Sep 2026 - 07min - 769 - Episode 667: Are You Lonely or Just Under-Connected?
Loneliness and under-connection are not the same thing.
And if you are treating them as the same problem, you may be reaching for the wrong remedy entirely.
In this episode I draw a clear distinction between loneliness, a feeling state, and under-connection, a behavioral condition, and explain why the solution to one is emotional and the solution to the other is practical. I use the analogy of thirst versus dehydration: you can feel one without having the other, and treating them identically misses the specificity that actually helps.
I also share how to tell which one you are dealing with, what the research says about why passive social media use tends to increase rather than reduce loneliness, and the specific, unsexy prescription for under-connection: call more, meet more, show up more. Put it in the calendar with the same seriousness you give a work meeting.

Tue, 22 Sep 2026 - 07min - 768 - Episode 666: You Probably Don't Need a Better Morning Routine
The wellness world has sold us a very elaborate lie about mornings.
That the quality of your day depends on a precise sequence of activities completed before most people are awake. Cold plunge. Journaling. Meditation. Gratitude practice. Exercise. Hydration.
In this episode I offer something much simpler and honestly much more useful: stop starting your day in reaction mode. When you wake up and immediately hand your morning to your phone, to other people's urgency, to news and email and demands, you have already spent the most valuable cognitive and creative window you will have all day.
The invitation is not to build a better routine. It is to create one moment of reconnection with yourself before the world gets its hands on you. A two-minute practice you do every day is worth more than a two-hour protocol you do when you feel motivated. The point is not to optimize. It is to orient.

When was the last time you did something you were genuinely not good at?
Not working toward being good at it. Just doing it, badly, for the pure experience of doing it?
In this episode I make the case for the category of things you do purely for love, with no ambition toward mastery, no monetization, no performance for an audience. This category is worth protecting. Maybe even expanding. Because the hobby you are bad at gives you something the rest of your life cannot: the experience of showing up without stakes.
I also explore the neuroplasticity benefits of genuine novelty, why being a beginner activates the brain in ways that familiar competence does not, and the underrated mental health benefit of being humbled by something you chose freely.

Sun, 20 Sep 2026 - 11min - 766 - Episode 664: The Art of Doing One Thing at a Time
We pride ourselves on multitasking.
But the research on this is unambiguous: what we call multitasking is actually task-switching. And we do everything worse when our attention is divided.
In this episode I make the case for the radical, countercultural act of doing one thing at a time. Not as a productivity strategy but as a quality-of-life one. Because when your attention is split, you are never fully anywhere. You are doing everything halfway. Food tastes different when you are not also reading something. A conversation goes somewhere real when you are not half-checking your phone. Work that felt resistant opens up when you give it your full attention.
Single-tasking is not slower. It just feels that way at first. What it actually produces is a better experience of being alive. And that is the whole point.

Sat, 19 Sep 2026 - 07min - 765 - Episode 663: Simplicity Is a Health Practice
The women who tend to their health most consistently are not always the most informed.
They are often the ones who have simplified enough to actually follow through.
In this episode I make the case that the answer to most health consistency problems is not more structure. It is less complexity. Because a simpler approach that actually happens is infinitely more valuable than an optimized one that never quite gets started. By the time many women reach the moment of choosing whether to exercise or cook a real meal, their cognitive bandwidth is nearly empty. Adding more to manage does not help. Removing decisions does.
I also share the counterintuitive truth that predicts long-term health behavior more reliably than knowledge or willpower: having a life simple enough that the healthy choice is also the available choice.

Back in July I made the research case for walking.
Today I want to do something different. I want to tell you what walking has actually given me.
In this episode I share how my nine-month-old Great Dane Tilly has made me one of the most consistent walkers of my adult life, and what those daily 45-minute morning walks have produced that no step count study can quite capture: a creative brain that comes online in the first ten minutes, problems that loosen, ideas that arrive, real conversations with my husband that happen side by side in a way they would never happen face to face.
The best description I have for what a morning walk gives me is a return to self before the world gets a chance to define the day for me. The research says it matters. But this episode is the personal case for why you might actually do it.

Thu, 17 Sep 2026 - 07min - 763 - Episode 661: Your Life Needs More Awe
Rachel Carson wrote that those who dwell among the beauties and mysteries of the earth are never alone or weary of life.
I have been thinking about that sentence a lot lately.
In this episode I explore what awe actually is, drawing on Dacher Keltner's definition: the feeling of being in the presence of something vast that transcends your current understanding of the world. And I make the case that awe does not require a mountaintop. It can arrive in an ordinary afternoon, which I illustrate with a deeply personal moment involving old photos of my son and what stopped me cold in that quiet.
Keltner's research found that the most common source of awe across cultures is not nature or music but other people's courage, kindness, and overcoming. Awe is everywhere. The question is whether we are moving slowly enough to let it in.

Wed, 16 Sep 2026 - 07min - 762 - Episode 660: Rest Is Not the Same as Doing Nothing
Lying on the couch scrolling your phone is inactivity.
But it is not rest.
In this episode I draw a clear distinction between what restores a human being and what merely passes the time. Genuine rest produces something on the other side: more capacity, quieter mind, a body that has had a chance to repair. Most of what we call rest keeps the nervous system engaged, stimulated, and reacting, which means nothing actually recovers.
I share a useful framework for thinking about the different kinds of rest, physical, mental, sensory, and emotional, and why most of us are deficient in at least two or three of them regardless of how many hours we spend on the couch. I also share honestly what actually restores me versus what I used to mistake for restoration.

Sociologist Ray Oldenburg spent his career studying something most of us have never thought to name.
He called it the third place.
Not home. Not work. The other place. The one where you belong without obligation, where you show up because you want to, where something in you exhales.
In this episode I explore Oldenburg's concept and what gets lost when the third place erodes from modern life: not just convenience, but a specific kind of belonging that home and work simply cannot provide. I share my own third places, dance and solo travel, and what makes them function so differently from the rest of my life. And I offer what I think is the most revealing version of the question: not where is your third place now, but what used to be your third place before life got so full?

Mon, 14 Sep 2026 - 08min - 760 - Episode 658: You Are Not What You Consume. You Are What You Absorb.
The more accurate version of "you are what you eat" is this: you are what you absorb.
And the same is true of information.
In this episode I explore the difference between being smart and being wise, a distinction my husband and I were wrestling with in a recent conversation that I have not been able to stop thinking about. Smart is about intake. Wisdom is what happens when information actually gets processed, integrated, and applied. When it moves from your head into your choices.
Most of us have developed very sophisticated consumption habits and very underdeveloped digestion. We move too quickly from one piece of content to the next for anything to settle. What actually allows ideas to digest? Quiet, journaling, real conversation, and the willingness to stay with one thing long enough to find out where it actually lives in your life.

Somewhere between the bodybuilding world and the wellness world, we lost something important in the conversation about strength.
It got reduced to metabolism and body composition.
In this episode I make the case that building genuine physical strength does something that calorie math cannot explain: it changes your identity. I share my own experience training with Ido Portal and how that period of physical fortification arrived at the same time as one of the most courageous professional pivots of my life. I do not think that was a coincidence.
I also share the emerging research on the connection between muscle mass and cognitive health, including studies showing a significant association between muscle loss and increased risk of Alzheimer's disease. We have become so uncomfortable with emptiness that we fill every available moment with something.
A podcast, a scroll, a task, a distraction.
And in doing so, we have cut ourselves off from something the brain genuinely needs.
In this episode I make the case for boredom as a doorway rather than a problem. I share my own experience of extended pausing, seasons of deliberately not forcing the next thing, and what arrives in that spaciousness that the busyness had been drowning out. I also explore the neuroscience of the default mode network, the part of the brain that activates in quiet and is associated with creativity, self-reflection, and processing emotional experience.
Boredom, at its best, is a form of receptivity. Life comes to you when you stop sprinting past it.

Fri, 11 Sep 2026 - 11min - 757 - Episode 655: When Did Eating Become So Complicated?
We have taken one of the most basic human activities and turned it into an anxiety-producing intellectual exercise.
In this episode I hold a nuanced position: I am not dismissing food tracking, macro counting, or structured eating approaches. For many women, especially those who have been eating in ways that have disconnected them from their body's signals for years, some structure genuinely helps. But there is a version of nutritional complexity that has gone too far, where the rules are so contradictory and the fear of eating the wrong thing so pervasive that eating itself has become a source of chronic stress.
I share what simplicity in eating actually looks like in practice: home cooking, fewer ingredients, eating at regular intervals, sitting down at a table, slowing down enough to taste what you are eating. And I make the case that the energy and attention you bring to how you eat matters as much as what you eat.

Thu, 10 Sep 2026 - 08min - 756 - Episode 654: Your Attention Is Part of Your Health
Most of us think carefully about what we put in our bodies.
Very few of us think with equal intentionality about what we put in our minds.
In this episode I make the case that your attention is a health variable. What it lands on, repeatedly, becomes the environment your nervous system lives in. And that environment is either building your capacity or quietly eroding it.
I share the filter I personally use when I notice I am feeling overwhelmed: what have I been consuming? Because so often the anxiety is not about my life. It is about the inputs I have been absorbing. Alarming news, outrage-based content, comparison-provoking social media, these things do not just feel bad. They train the nervous system to operate in a state of low-level threat response.
You have far more agency over this than you might think. And exercising it is one of the most health-promoting things available to you.

In this episode I explore the difference between being connected and being truly known, and why that distinction may be the most important relational one of your life. I share my own honest reckoning with the limits of surface connection and my growing craving for real depth in my relational world, the kind that does not happen in a comment section or a DM.
I also offer what I think is the most clarifying question available: if something happened at 2 in the morning, who would you call? Not text. Call. Knowing they would pick up, show up, and hold what you are carrying. If a name came to mind immediately, hold that relationship with both hands. This is not a biohacking episode.
I am not going to tell you to buy a special lamp or track your lux levels. I just want to make the case for something so simple and so free that we have almost entirely stopped doing it: going outside in the morning and letting daylight reach your eyes.
In this episode I share how my nine-month-old Great Dane Tilly accidentally became my most reliable wellness accountability partner, the research on what morning light actually does to your circadian system, cortisol, melatonin, and sleep quality, and the problem with spending most of our waking hours under artificial junk light.
Getting outside in the morning, before the screen, before the to-do list takes over, is one of the simplest and most impactful things available to you. Your biology is still remarkably responsive to something as basic as daylight. Let it do its job.

Mon, 07 Sep 2026 - 06min - 753 - Episode 651: What If Fun Is a Health Metric?
What if we tracked laughter and play and genuine enjoyment with even a fraction of the enthusiasm we bring to our step counts and protein grams?
In this episode I make the case that fun is not frivolous. It is a sustainability mechanism. And in a long-term health practice, sustainability is everything.
I explore the concept of bringing magic to the mundane: what happens when you approach cooking with presence and music instead of efficiency, when you consider the route of your walk or who you move with or the playlist that actually makes you want to move. These are not small things. They are the difference between a practice you sustain and one you eventually abandon.
I also offer a simple honest audit: where in your health practice right now are you experiencing genuine dread? Because dread is information. And it is not a sustainable fuel.

Sun, 06 Sep 2026 - 07min - 752 - Episode 650: Your Body Loves a Rhythm
Your body is not asking for a perfect schedule.
It is asking for predictability.
In this episode I explore how the body's circadian rhythm, the internal clock regulating nearly every physiological process, is set and sustained by consistent external cues: light, meal timing, movement, sleep windows. When those cues are reliable, the body can do its work efficiently. When they are scattered, the system has to constantly recalibrate, and that costs energy.
I also share one of the most concrete illustrations I know of how trainable the body actually is: the metabolism. Women who consistently delay their first meal stop feeling hungry in the morning. Women who shift to eating within an hour of waking become ravenously hungry at that time within weeks. The body adapts to what you give it consistently. That responsiveness is one of the most underappreciated tools available to you.

Sat, 05 Sep 2026 - 08min - 751 - Episode 649: Do You Have Enough to Look Forward To?
My husband and I were talking recently about how full and heavy midlife feels right now. The parents to care for, the teenager still at home, the business to run, the relationship to tend. And underneath that conversation was something surprising: the weight of it is also what keeps us going.
In this episode I make the case that having something to look forward to is not a luxury. It is a health variable. Anticipation activates the brain's dopamine system in ways that genuinely support mood, motivation, and engagement with life. When nothing is on the horizon, life starts to feel flat in a way that is not just emotional. It is physiological.
I also explore a pattern I see repeatedly in coaching: people who retire and discover that having nothing they have to do turns out to be its own kind of problem. The weight of obligation and the aliveness it produces are more connected than most of us realize.

Fri, 04 Sep 2026 - 08min - 750 - Episode 648: The Health Cost of Being in a Hurry
You can eat well, exercise consistently, and sleep seven hours a night. And still spend your entire day physiologically rushing.
In this episode I make the case that chronic hurry has a real and measurable health cost that most of us are completely underestimating. When the nervous system is in a constant low-grade state of urgency, it affects digestion, immune function, sleep quality, cognitive performance, and the ability to feel present in your own life.
I also explore what I think is the deeper cost of hurry: the life we miss while moving too fast to experience it. The conversations that deserved more presence. The meals that became things to get through. The moments that passed without ever actually landing.
Slowing down is not laziness. It is a physiological necessity and a prerequisite for a life that actually feels like yours.

Thu, 03 Sep 2026 - 11min - 749 - Episode 647: Your Social Life Might Need Progressive Overload
In strength training, if you never increase the challenge, you stop getting stronger. The body adapts and then plateaus.
The same thing happens in your social life.
In this episode I take one of the foundational principles of physical training and apply it to relational health, because a lot of us have been lifting the same relational weight for years. Same people, same conversations, same comfortable equilibrium. And then we wonder why our social lives feel flat or unfulfilling.
I explore what relational complacency actually looks like, why it is so easy to settle into it, and what progressive overload actually means when applied to connection: finding new circles, having the challenging conversation, approaching existing relationships with more honesty and curiosity than comfort.

Wed, 02 Sep 2026 - 08min - 748 - Episode 646: Boring Works
After thirty years in the wellness industry and hundreds of conversations with extraordinary health experts, I keep arriving at the same conclusion. Not a revolutionary one. A remarkably unsexy one.
The basics work.
In this episode I share the turning point in my own life that proved this to me beyond any doubt, including my experience with a program called Genesis Transformation, where I watched women deep in perimenopause transform their bodies by doing nothing more exotic than drinking water, strength training, sleeping, eating enough protein, and parenting their brains. What I also share is the framework I have built my entire coaching career around, the Five to Thrive, plus the two additions I would make today: community and time in nature.
The breakthrough you are looking for is probably not a new protocol. It is probably a deeper and more consistent relationship with what you already know works.

There is a feeling most of us were taught to be ashamed of.
We call it a sin. We hide it. We dress it up as something more acceptable.
But what if envy, honestly examined, is actually one of the most useful signals available to you?
In this episode I draw the distinction between jealousy, which makes me feel small and defensive, and envy, which points at something I desire. I share my own experience following Misty Tripoli, the founder of the Groove dance movement, and how sitting with what I envy about her revealed something important about what I want for myself.
Envy, properly examined, is not a character flaw. It is a compass. And it is worth following.

And I have been surrounded by people and felt profoundly alone.
Those are two completely different experiences. And understanding the difference between them might change how you relate to both.
In this episode I draw a clear distinction between solitude and loneliness, share my own deep craving for solitude and the permission it took to finally pursue it without guilt, and explore why the loneliness I see most often in the women I work with is not the loneliness of physical isolation. It is the loneliness of not feeling truly known.
That kind of loneliness is not solved by more time with people. It is solved by deeper connection, starting with yourself.

I am very good at giving.
I spent a long time being terrible at receiving.
And I have come to understand that the inability to receive is not humility. It is a wall. And it keeps love out just as effectively as it keeps pain out.
In this episode I share the story of my friend Colleen volunteering at my first retreat and what happened when I finally said yes to being supported. What I discovered completely reframed how I think about receiving. When I refuse it, I am not protecting anyone. I am denying the people who care about me the opportunity to love me. And I am denying myself the experience of being loved.
I also name the three things that typically sit underneath the inability to receive: vulnerability, worth, and control. And I offer a simple practice for beginning to let care in.

There is a voice that most of us know intimately.
The one that says you are not doing enough, not being enough, not achieving enough.
At midlife, that voice often gets louder.
In this episode I share my own evolving relationship with my inner critic, including how I have learned to stop trying to silence her and start turning her questions back around. When she asks why I am not doing more, I have learned to answer: why not me? Why not this version, this season, doing things the way I am doing them?
I also explore the reframe that has helped me most, treating the inner critic not as an enemy but as information, and share research on why self-compassion actually outperforms self-criticism when it comes to motivation, resilience, and performance.

Journaling is not about filling pages.
It is about going somewhere you have not been before.
And the quality of where you end up is almost entirely determined by the quality of the question you start with.
In this episode I reframe journaling as a practice of radical self-inquiry rather than a diary or a gratitude list. I share a collection of less obvious questions worth sitting with, including what am I pretending not to know, what feeling do I keep avoiding and what is it trying to tell me, and what story am I telling about this situation that may not actually be true.
I also offer practical ways to build the habit so it actually sticks. What you get out of journaling is largely what you bring to the depth of the question and the honesty of the answer. It is not always fun. It is revealing. And that is the whole point.

Do you actually need rest right now?
Or is rest the story you are telling yourself to avoid doing the thing?
These are two very different situations. And knowing the difference might change everything about how you approach your days.
A client of mine recently brought this question to me. She said she always feels like she needs to rest, no matter what, and she was starting to wonder whether that was a real need or a habit of avoidance so normalized she could no longer tell the difference. That is one of the most self-aware questions someone can ask.
In this episode I share how to distinguish genuine depletion from resistance, what real rest actually feels like on the other side, and why committing to just ten minutes is almost always the most honest move you can make.

There is a space between who you have been and who you are becoming.
It is not comfortable. It is not certain. And it is not optional.
I call it the hallway.
In this episode I explore what liminal space actually is, why midlife is by its very nature a liminal season, and how I have had to learn to stop treating the hallway like a crisis and start treating it like a classroom. I used to hate not knowing what was next. I wanted certainty and guarantees and forward momentum.
Now I am learning to trust that what is supposed to emerge from this space will emerge in its own time. And the quality of what begins on the other side is often directly related to how honestly and patiently you inhabit the in-between.

Mon, 24 Aug 2026 - 07min - 739 - Episode 637: Your Relationship with Capacity
A lot of women tell me they have a healthy relationship with their capacity.
And then I look at their schedule.
Those two things do not always match.
In this episode I draw a clear distinction between enduring and thriving, and make the case that a healthy relationship with capacity starts with getting radically honest about the resources you actually have available right now. Not the ones you wish you had. Not the ones you had five years ago. The ones that are genuinely present today.
I can tell a tremendous amount about a woman's relationship with capacity by how her schedule is built. Overcommitting is not ambition. It is often a delusional relationship with what is actually possible. And the cost of that delusion lands in the body, the relationships, and the quality of everything she is trying to do.

I often say that health is answering the question: how much life do you have in your life?

In this episode I share what is genuinely infusing my life with more aliveness right now. The Montana seasons and how much easier it is to be outside. My puppy Tilly, who makes me laugh out loud a dozen times a day and who was such a gift in the season of losing our Great Dane Sully. Befriending cardio in new ways, including jump rope and movement with friends. Savoring the time I have left with my dad and with my son before he leaves home. Every time you elevate your life in some way, the problems do not go away.
They change form.
My mom used to say it to me when my son was small: little kids, little problems. Big kids, big problems. She was right. And the same thing is true in business, in health, in every arena where you are growing.
In this episode I explore the concept of new level, new devil and why understanding it is one of the most important things you can do to protect yourself from discouragement. When you are first building a health practice you focus on one thing. The longer you are in the arena the more you understand how everything is connected. You start wishing for the simplicity of being a beginner. And I want to offer you a reframe: that nostalgia for simpler problems is actually evidence of how far you have come.

Not every chapter of your life is supposed to run on forever.
And the chapters that have ended are not asking you to grieve them indefinitely.
They are asking you to close them, honor them, and walk into what comes next.
In this episode I lead with the invitation to close rather than the grief of ending, because I see too many women lingering in chapters that have clearly concluded and paying a real health cost for it. The open loop of an unfinished chapter takes up psychological and emotional bandwidth whether you realize it or not.
I also share what closing a chapter with intention actually looks like, and why the space it creates is often where the most important next things begin.

We say yes when we mean no. We stay in things we have outgrown. We dim ourselves so others are not uncomfortable. We apologize for taking up space.

Bryan Johnson has spent an estimated two million dollars a year trying to reverse his biological age.
He tracks everything. Optimizes everything. Submits to more medical testing than most people experience in a lifetime.
And recently, he was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition.
I am not sharing this to pile on. I am sharing it because I think it illustrates something important that we need to talk about. Health is not a problem to be solved through enough data and enough precision. The human body is a living system in constant relationship with your emotions, your connections, your sense of meaning, and your nervous system. No supplement stack compensates for all of that.
In this episode I make the case for what actually builds health, and why optimization, as a primary strategy, misses the point.

We love a clean answer.
We love to know exactly how we feel and exactly what something means.
But life is almost never that simple. And insisting that it should be is one of the quietest ways we make ourselves suffer.
In this episode I make the case for both/and thinking as one of the most sophisticated and health-promoting capacities a human being can develop. I can be deeply grateful for my life and also exhausted by it. I can love someone completely and also need distance from them. I can be proud of something I did and clearly see where I fell short.
Both can be true. And the moment I stop demanding that only one be true, I stop fighting with myself.

Sun, 16 Aug 2026 - 07min - 731 - Episode 629: Beyond Resilience: The Case for Becoming Antifragile
Most of us have been told that resilience is the goal.
To bounce back. To withstand the hard things.
But what if there is something beyond resilience?
Nassim Nicholas Taleb introduced a concept in his book Antifragile that I have not been able to stop thinking about. Some systems do not just withstand stress. They actually get stronger because of it. He calls this antifragile. And it goes beyond resilience in a way that I think every midlife woman needs to understand.
In this episode I explain the three categories of fragile, resilient, and antifragile, share why my own current season of stress feels like it is building me rather than breaking me, and make the case for why our excessive need for safety and comfort is making us more fragile over time, not less.

Sat, 15 Aug 2026 - 09min - 730 - Episode 628: Some Relationships Are Complete
Not every relationship is meant to last forever.
And treating one that has run its course as a failure may be one of the most unnecessary sources of suffering we create for ourselves.
In this episode I introduce the idea of a relationship being complete rather than broken, and why that distinction changes everything about how we move through endings. A relationship that helped you through your twenties may not be the relationship you need in your forties. That does not mean it was not real or valuable. It means it did its work.
I also name the specific ways women create unnecessary suffering by clinging to connections that were never designed to be permanent, and offer a more grace-filled way of honoring what something gave you before letting it go.

Fri, 14 Aug 2026 - 08min - 729 - Episode 627: Meaning Is the Medicine
We spend a lot of energy chasing happiness.
But what if happiness was never the deepest goal?
Viktor Frankl was an Austrian psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor who spent years in Nazi concentration camps, including Auschwitz. What he observed there, about the difference between the people who survived and those who did not, became the foundation of one of the most important books ever written about being human.
That book is Man's Search for Meaning.
In this episode I explore the distinction between happiness and meaning, why meaning is a stronger predictor of wellbeing than moment-to-moment positive emotion, and why midlife is an ideal season to ask the question: what am I in service of right now? The answer may be more available than you think.

I heard a quote years ago that I have never been able to shake.
I have no idea who said it, but here it is: life is one long series of problem solving, and the sooner you accept that fact, the less you will suffer.
In this episode I make the case that problems are not the interruption to your life. They are the content of it. The women who age most gracefully are not the ones whose lives have fewer problems. They are the ones who have made peace with that fact and invested in becoming better at navigating them.
I also share what the research tells us about post-traumatic growth, and why adversity, when processed rather than suppressed, tends to produce more wisdom, resilience, and life satisfaction than smooth sailing ever could.

Wed, 12 Aug 2026 - 11min - 727 - Episode 625: Do the Opposite
When I was a personal trainer, one of my favorite techniques was to ask clients to do the exact opposite of their habitual movement pattern.
Not because the opposite was right. It obviously was not.
But because the experience of the extreme helped them find the middle. The most functional place was almost always somewhere between the two. And they could not find it until they had felt what was on the other side of their habit.
In this episode I take that principle far beyond physical training and apply it to how we live. What are the things you do every day so automatically you have stopped noticing them? What would the opposite feel like? I share my own practice of slowing way down, which is the direct opposite of my natural speed, and what I consistently find waiting in that middle ground.

Tue, 11 Aug 2026 - 07min - 726 - Episode 624: Minimalism as a Nutrient, Not an Aesthetic
We talk about minimalism like it is a design trend.
Something you see in a magazine. Clean lines. Empty shelves. The five coffee cups you actually love instead of the forty you have accumulated.
But that is not what I want to talk about today.
In this episode I make the case for minimalism as something your brain and nervous system actually need. When your environment is cluttered, your nervous system is working. It is processing and filtering everything around you whether you ask it to or not. That work has a cost. And when you clear the clutter, you are not just tidying. You are giving your brain relief.
I also share how I practice minimalism in my own home, my wardrobe, and my business right now, and why doing fewer things better has become the standard I am actively building toward.

In this episode, Jenn Pike and I pull back the curtain on the hidden drivers behind burnout in perimenopause and beyond: overfunctioning, people-pleasing, carrying the mental load, and trying to "fix" your body while your nervous system is still stuck in survival mode.
We talk about what sustainable healing actually looks like (without perfectionism), where women give their power away in the wellness space, and simple ways to reconnect with your body when you feel overwhelmed and disconnected.

Sun, 09 Aug 2026 - 57min - 724 - Episode 622: What Would Love Do Here?
My eight-month-old puppy Tilly recently chewed through my jump rope.
She has also excavated my gym bag, destroyed a hip roller, and shown zero remorse for any of it.
And I love her completely. Not one bit less.
In this episode I use that gap, between what she does and how I feel about her, to explore the concept of unconditional love. Most of the love in our lives is conditional. We have unwritten manuals that govern who gets our warmth and when. Unconditional love is something different entirely. And asking yourself the question "what would love do here?" is one of the most powerful self-leadership practices I know.
I also bring this home to the relationship that matters most: the one you have with yourself.

Sat, 08 Aug 2026 - 10min - 723 - Episode 621: Energy Management Is the New Time Management
Nir Eyal wrote that time management is really pain management.
I think there is profound truth in that.
But what I am even more passionate about these days is energy management. Because managing your time means nothing if you have no energy to spend in it.
In this episode I make the case that at midlife, most of us have more responsibility than we have ever had and less energy than we used to. If we do not put serious forethought into how we spend our energy each day, life runs us. And we end up feeling resentful, unfulfilled, and perpetually behind.
I share what poor energy management actually looks like in practice and offer three questions to ask yourself every night that will change how you approach the next day.

Fri, 07 Aug 2026 - 08min - 722 - Episode 620: A Diagnosis Is Not the Final Word
Health is not the absence of disease.
I feel strongly about this, and I want to make the case for it today.
In this episode I share why I believe health is not binary. Your physical health being compromised does not mean your health as a whole is gone. It means one dimension is under strain. And there are other dimensions still available to you.
I have coached women navigating cancer, Parkinson's, ALS, and many other serious diagnoses. I would not have been doing that work if I believed the diagnosis was the final word on what someone was capable of. A diagnosis tells you what you are dealing with in one dimension of your health. It does not tell you who you are.
How you show up in the face of what you are dealing with is everything. That is the real measure of health.

Thu, 06 Aug 2026 - 12min - 721 - Episode 619: Health Is a Practice of Self-Leadership
I teach self-leadership.
I just happen to use health as the arena.
Because if you can learn to lead yourself here, you can learn to lead yourself anywhere.
In this episode I make the case that the skills required to build a consistent health practice are the exact same skills that build a successful business, a thriving relationship, and a financially stable life. The principles are identical. Only the arena is different.
If you have ever felt disciplined in one area of your life but completely unable to get it together in another, this episode is for you. Self-leadership is transferable. It is a muscle, not a fixed trait. And your body is the most honest training ground available for building it.

Wed, 05 Aug 2026 - 11min - 720 - Episode 618: Living YOUR Code
I wrote The Consistency Code to help people live more consistently.
But here is what I have learned: consistency toward what?
Before the principles mean anything, you have to answer that question.
In this episode I make the case that getting radically clear on your values and standards is not optional. It is the only foundation from which meaningful consistency can actually be built. Without it, you are being disciplined toward things that were never truly yours to begin with. You are chasing rainbows.
I also share the questions worth sitting with to start building a code that is genuinely yours at this age and stage of life. Not someone else's definition of health or success. Yours.
This episode is also a direct invitation to join me on Substack, where every Tuesday I go live in something called The Code, a behind-the-scenes look at how I apply these principles in my own life in real time. You can join me here https://courtneytownley.substack.com

Tue, 04 Aug 2026 - 10min - 719 - Episode 617: Stop Arguing for Your Brokenness
We are all building a case for something every single day.
The question is whether you are building a case for what you are capable of, or a case for why you cannot.
In this episode I name the ways we argue for our own limitations, often with impressive precision. We have evidence. We have history. We have a courtroom's worth of justification for why change is not available to us.
I also speak to the label trap, the way certain words or diagnoses can become the closing argument in a case for brokenness rather than the door that opens inquiry. I have coached women navigating cancer, Parkinson's, and ALS, and I would not have been doing that work if I believed a diagnosis was the final word on what someone was capable of.
You can argue for your possibility or your limitations. You cannot do both at the same time. This episode challenges you to choose which case is worth building.

Mon, 03 Aug 2026 - 12min - 718 - Episode 616: It's Time for a Season of Grit
There are seasons in life that ask you to rest.
And then there are seasons that ask you to rise.
I have been living in the first one for a while. And I can feel the second one coming.
In this episode I talk about what a season of grit actually is and what it is not. It is not punishment. It is not grinding yourself into the ground. It is the deliberate decision to turn the dial of discipline up in a specific area of your life, knowing that you will be a little more tired and a little more sore, and making that trade consciously because you know what is on the other side.
I also speak directly to the woman who has been extending herself too much grace for too long. Not every season of ease is recovery. Sometimes it has quietly become avoidance. And this episode is the nudge to notice the difference and turn the dial.

Sun, 02 Aug 2026 - 14min - 717 - Episode 615: What You Put Up With Is What You Become
I read something recently that stopped me cold.
The idea was this: you don't become what you aspire to. You become what you tolerate.
I have not been able to stop thinking about it since.
In this episode I explore how the standards we keep, or fail to keep, quietly shape the life we are actually living. What we tolerate in our relationships, our work, our habits, and our own inner dialogue is not neutral. It accumulates. It becomes us.
I also share why midlife may actually be the perfect season to get radically honest about this. As estrogen and progesterone decline, our ability to chemically buffer stress changes with them. The irritability and shorter patience that so many women experience in this season may not be a malfunction. It may be your biology turning up the volume on something that has always needed your attention.
The takeaway is simple and worth carrying with you: stay wildly curious about what you are tolerating and why.

Sat, 01 Aug 2026 - 11min - 716 - Episode 614: The Goal You Think Is Impossible (Is the One Worth Chasing)
What if the goal that scares you most is the one that's most worth pursuing?
Not because you're guaranteed to achieve it.
But because of who you'll become in the process.
In this episode, I revisit a concept I've taught for years: impossible goals. The goals that require you to grow beyond your current identity, habits, and comfort zone.
Using my decade long journey of writing The Consistency Code as an example, I share why the pursuit of a meaningful goal often matters more than the outcome itself.
You don't need certainty.
You don't need guarantees.
You just need a reason that's bigger than your fear.

Fri, 31 Jul 2026 - 10min - 715 - Episode 613: The Comfort Crisis: Why Easy Is Killing Us
Modern life has become incredibly comfortable.
And that's not always a good thing.
We can avoid effort, discomfort, uncertainty, boredom, and challenge with the push of a button.
But something important gets lost when life becomes too easy.
In this episode, I draw on Michael Easter's work in The Comfort Crisis and explore why growth, vitality, confidence, and meaning are so often found on the other side of discomfort.
The choice isn't between comfort and discomfort.
It's between the discomfort that helps you grow and the discomfort that slowly shrinks your life.
One builds resilience.
The other builds regret.
Choose carefully.

Thu, 30 Jul 2026 - 08min - 714 - Episode 612: In Pursuit of Joy: Why Your Joyspan Matters as Much as Your Lifespan
We spend a lot of time talking about lifespan.
And increasingly, we talk about healthspan.
But what about joy span?
What if one of the most important measures of a life is how much joy we actually experience while we're living it?
In this episode, I explore the difference between happiness and joy, introduce the concept of joyspan, and share practical ways to become more aware of the joy that already exists around you.
Joy isn't frivolous.
It isn't selfish.
And it certainly isn't something to postpone until everything else is handled.
Joy is part of what makes a life worth living.

Wed, 29 Jul 2026 - 09min - 713 - Episode 611: Midlife Is a Reckoning (And That's Not a Bad Thing)
I think midlife is a second loss of innocence.
A moment when many of the stories we've told ourselves stop working.
The illusion that we have endless time.
The belief that effort guarantees outcomes.
The fantasy that life will eventually stop being hard.
In this episode, I reflect on a conversation that led me to see midlife differently and explore why this season can feel both painful and profoundly liberating.
A reckoning isn't a punishment.
It's an invitation.
To see more clearly.
To live more honestly.
And to treat yourself with a level of compassion that only wisdom can teach.

Tue, 28 Jul 2026 - 09min - 712 - Episode 610: Mind the Dose: The Health Principle Nobody Talks About
Most health problems don't come from a single choice.
They come from the accumulation of many choices.
One glass of wine isn't the issue.
One missed workout isn't the issue.
One night of poor sleep isn't the issue.
In this episode, I explore the concept of dose and why frequency matters far more than most people realize.
We'll talk about the gap between the stories we tell ourselves and the patterns we're actually living, along with practical ways to start measuring what matters.
Because your health isn't being shaped by what you do occasionally.
It's being shaped by what you do repeatedly.
