Not a king, yet possessing unmatched power, Charles rallied the Frankish armies to meet this dire threat. His defining moment came at the Battle of Tours in 732, also known as the Battle of Poitiers. There, Charles and his men faced the Umayyad force led by Abd al-Rahman al-Ghafiqi. With strategic acumen, Charles formed his forces into a disciplined defensive force, ready for battle. The two armies stood off for days before engaging in fierce combat. The disciplined Frankish soldiers held their ground against the Umayyad cavalry. Amidst the fierce fighting, Abd al-Rahman was slain, leading the surviving Umayyad forces to withdraw after nightfall. Charles secured a remarkable victory, bolstering his reputation as a preeminent military leader. This was not Charles Martel's last confrontation with Umayyad power in Gaul. In subsequent years, he continued campaigns in the south, confronting Muslim forces and solidifying Frankish control. The Wuffingas dynasty, claiming divine descent from Woden, rose to power here. Their first known king, Wehha, remains a shadowy figure in history, followed by Wuffa, whose legacy named the dynasty. Before the establishment of saints and monasteries in East Anglia, before kings were crowned in stone halls or immortalized in written laws, there was Wehha. In the shadowy centuries of the sixth age, as new peoples crossed the sea and the ancient Roman world in Britain faded, Anglo-Saxon tradition recalls Wehha as the inaugural king of the East Angles. Historical accounts suggest he lived and ruled as a pagan lord during the era of settlement and conflict, when migrants from Frisia and southern Jutland forged a new kingdom along England's eastern shores. This was an era before chronicles, where power was won by blood and sword. From Wehha came Wuffa, his son, who established the House of the Wuffingas, the royal dynasty that ruled East Anglia for generations over the lands later known as Norfolk and Suffolk. Under the Wuffingas, East Anglia rose as a prominent Anglo-Saxon kingdom, with its kings laid to rest with treasures and warriors remembered in legend. However, much of their history has been lost over time. Viking invasions of the ninth century and the dissolution of monasteries in the sixteenth shattered the libraries that once preserved their deeds. What remains are fragments—names, lineages, echoes. An echo survives in the Historia Brittonum, naming Wehha, father of Wuffa, as the first of the Wuffingas. Leading a guerrilla group of warriors and deemed an outlaw by the Normans, Hereward became a symbol of native resistance. Despite his fame, he remains an enigmatic figure. What do we truly know about this rebel who defied William and his armies? Reliable information is limited, primarily preserved in the Peterborough Chronicle and the Gesta Herewardi. The latter, an early twelfth-century Latin translation of a lost Old English account, was reportedly written by Leofric, a priest in Hereward’s household. By the time it was copied, the original was already damaged, with missing sections reconstructed from oral tradition. What survives is a mix of memory, storytelling, and history. The origin of his epithet, “the Wake,” is uncertain. Some trace it to an Old English word meaning “watchful,” while others argue it was later invented by an Anglo-Norman family claiming descent from him. By the fourteenth century, he is clearly recorded as “Hereward the Wake,” although he has also been remembered as “the Outlaw” and “the Exile.” Over time, parts of his story may have intertwined with or inspired elements of the Robin Hood tradition.
