HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, a groundbreaking sitcom that ran for 208 episodes on CBS from 2005-2014, unfolds entirely as a flashback, using a time-bending narrative structure that spotlights the lives of five friends navigating love, friendship, dating, careers, failure, and success in New York City. The show has remained vibrantly alive in our collective pop culture memory, with fans around the world still sharing stories of how HIMYM is not just a hilarious comedy but also medicine for the soul in hard times. Now, JOSH RADNOR (who played “Ted Mosby”) has teamed up with series co-creator CRAIG THOMAS to explore, episode-by-episode, the mystery at the heart of what has made this show so durable and beloved. It’s time – much like the older, wiser narrator Ted does in the show – to look back on this adventure that occupied a pivotal decade of their lives: how the show changed them, how it changed its fans, and how it changed the culture. With plenty of special guests joining us along the way, this podcast will use HIMYM’s trenchant themes as jumping-off points for larger discussions about life, loss, and love. This is HOW WE MADE YOUR MOTHER: A flashback podcast for a flashback show.

Mon, 19 Oct 2026 - 118 - How We Met Regis | S4E2 "The Best Burger in New York"
Josh and Craig revisit Season 4, Episode 2, “The Best Burger in New York,” a beloved episode that turns Marshall’s search for an elusive burger into something much bigger: a story about nostalgia, aging, compromise, and trying to recapture the wonder of your younger self. They celebrate Regis Philbin’s legendary guest appearance, Jason Segel’s Amadeus-inspired burger monologue, the real New York locations that inspired the episode, and the little details that make the gang feel like a family. Josh shares his own version of Marshall’s quest involving a mysterious “lost Moby song,” while Craig remembers watching the landmarks of his twenties disappear as New York changed around him. They also discuss Marshall’s struggle between his youthful idealism and taking a job at Goliath National Bank, Neil Patrick Harris treating even the smallest Barney storyline like an A-story, and the hilarity of discovering that a contemporary critic gave this now-classic episode a D. Plus, Jordana returns with an analysis of Marshall’s burger obsession as a way of processing the grief of growing up and letting go of the person you once imagined you would become — and how friendship and love help carry us through that loss.-Read Why on Earth Have I Seen the Same Broadway Show 13 Times? Josh Radnor and Craig Thomas kick off Season 4 with “Do I Know You?,” revisiting Ted and Stella’s engagement and the question at the heart of the episode: how well do you really need to know someone before deciding to marry them? They dig into the now-iconic “Star Wars test,” Ted’s anxiety over whether Stella will love the things he loves, and the larger challenge of accepting that your partner won’t always share your tastes. They also explore Barney’s newly revealed feelings for Robin, Lily’s role as his emotional coach, and Neil Patrick Harris’s remarkable physical comedy, while celebrating Sarah Chalke’s chemistry with Josh and her very specific technique for a perfect pratfall. Along the way, Josh and Craig talk about the hidden craft behind seemingly effortless acting, why everyone feels so comfortably inside their characters by Season 4, and the season that earned How I Met Your Mother its only Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy nomination. Plus, Josh remembers realizing at the Emmys that every camera was already pointed at Tina Fey, Craig connects the episode’s Star Wars test to Josh watching HIMYM with Jordana for the first time, and a listener shares how the series helped her through heartbreak and an ADHD diagnosis. -CONNECT WITH THE SHOW:Official Website (Send us your audio and written messages)InstagramTiktok-READ JOSH’S MUSELETTERS ON SUBSTACK:Subscribe HERE-CRAIG’S BOOK IS AVAILABLE!Head over to CRAIG’S WEBSITE to order your copy of THAT’S NOT HOW IT HAPPENED.-SUPPORT PEDIATRIC CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE RESEARCH:Click HERE to learn more and donate today.-FOLLOW THE OFFICE LADIES:Check out "Office Ladies" at https://officeladies.com/ or wherever you get your podcasts! Pam remembers the extraordinary teamwork required to produce nine episodes in eleven weeks after the writers’ strike, while Josh and Craig unpack Ted’s car accident, Barney’s collision with a bus, Ted and Barney’s reconciliation, and Ted’s impulsive proposal to Stella. Chris Harris reveals the painfully true story behind the pencil-up-Barney’s-nose gag, and the trio discuss Neil Patrick Harris’s commitment, Sarah Chalke’s arrival, the episode’s memorable Radiohead and Replacements needle drops, and Pam’s daughters’ hidden cameo. Thu, 24 Sep 2026 - 114 - How Everything Went | S3E19 "Everything Must Go"
Josh and Craig revisit Season 3, Episode 19, “Everything Must Go,” and Josh makes a rare confession: he didn’t love this one — especially Ted’s inexplicable devotion to those red cowboy boots. Craig explains how the episode emerged from the post-Writers’ Strike scramble to produce nine episodes in eleven weeks, resulting in a slightly chaotic collection of stories that nevertheless gave us Britney Spears’ hilarious return as Abby, Lily discovering an unexpected audience for her paintings, and some now-iconic HIMYM moments. They also reveal the remarkable real-life story behind MarshallandLilySellTheirStuff.com, where props and costumes from the show were auctioned to raise nearly $24,000 for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, remember guest stars Larry Wilmore and UCB legend Matt Besser, and celebrate the music that helped give Lily’s story its heart. Plus: Knicks mania in New York, the lost art of experiencing pop culture together, and a moving listener letter that sparks a conversation about masculinity, forgiveness, and what it means to create a space that feels safe, smart, and human.-And check out the archived version of:guyforceshiswifetodressinagarbagebagforthenextthreeyears.com-CONNECT WITH THE SHOW:Official Website (Send us your audio and written messages)InstagramTiktok-READ JOSH’S MUSELETTERS ON SUBSTACK:Subscribe HERE-CRAIG’S BOOK IS AVAILABLE!Head over to CRAIG’S WEBSITE to order your copy of THAT’S NOT HOW IT HAPPENED.-SUPPORT PEDIATRIC CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE RESEARCH:Click HERE to learn more and donate today.-FOLLOW THE OFFICE LADIES:Check out "Office Ladies" at https://officeladies.com/ or wherever you get your podcasts! Mon, 21 Sep 2026 - 113 - How We Electric Bugaloo'd | S3E18 "Rebound Bro"
Josh and Craig revisit “Rebound Bro,” the post–writers’ strike episode that sends Barney searching for a new wingman after his breakup with Ted — and finds the perfect sad-sack replacement in Randy Wharmpess, played by the incomparable Will Forte. They talk about Forte’s unique mix of sweetness and insanity, Barney and Randy’s surprisingly romantic dynamic, and how the episode’s comedy grows out of Barney’s very real heartbreak. Meanwhile, Ted learns Stella hasn’t had sex in five years, setting off a debate about trust, intimacy, and whether Ted was wrong to tell Marshall and Lily. Plus: Sarah Chalke’s incredible laugh, the frantic pace of producing the final nine episodes of Season 3 after the strike, “sweaty” sitcom plot mechanics, Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo, Geraldine Ferraro, Nell Carter, the TV reruns that raised a generation of comedy writers, and what Rocky can teach us about Barney Stinson.CONNECT WITH THE SHOW:Official Website (Send us your audio and written messages)InstagramTiktok-READ JOSH’S MUSELETTERS ON SUBSTACK:Subscribe HERE-CRAIG’S BOOK IS AVAILABLE!Head over to CRAIG’S WEBSITE to order your copy of THAT’S NOT HOW IT HAPPENED.-SUPPORT PEDIATRIC CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE RESEARCH:Click HERE to learn more and donate today.-FOLLOW THE OFFICE LADIES:Check out "Office Ladies" at https://officeladies.com/ or wherever you get your podcasts! From the Emmy-nominated co-creator and Executive Producer of How I Met Your Mother, Craig Thomas’s debut novel, THAT’S NOT HOW IT HAPPENED, is a smart, funny, bighearted story about a family turned upside down after Hollywood decides to make a movie version of their lives. Told through the shifting perspectives of Paige, Rob, Emmett, and Darcy, a flawed, funny, complicated family is forced to confront past wounds and present betrayals—and questions about how we think and talk about disability, how our stories get told (and who gets to tell them), and how love stories can come in many different shapes and sizes. Thu, 10 Sep 2026 - 111 - How We Didn't Meet the Goat | S3E17 "The Goat"
Josh and Craig revisit Season 3, Episode 17, “The Goat,” which, despite its title and Future Ted’s spectacularly unreliable memory, is really about the breakup of Ted and Barney’s friendship after Barney sleeps with Robin. They dig into Barney’s guilt, Marshall’s attempt to find a loophole in the sacred Bro Code, Ted’s surprisingly brutal reaction, and the growing connection between Barney and Robin that had been quietly building throughout the season. Craig recalls why the writers decided to make such a huge story move in Season 3 and how the frantic post-WGA-strike schedule pushed them to take some of the show’s biggest creative swings. They also talk about friendship breakups being every bit as painful as romantic ones, the creation of the real-life bestselling Bro Code, Barney’s mysterious job, the goat story that technically hasn’t happened yet, and the show’s fascination with memory and time. Josh and Craig revisit Season 3’s “The Chain of Screaming,” an episode about work, money, dignity, and the question of whether we pass anger down the line or choose to break the cycle. Then they’re joined by the great Bob Odenkirk, who looks back on playing Artillery Arthur, explains how a HIMYM scheduling conflict inadvertently helped lead to the creation of Mike Ehrmantraut on Breaking Bad, and remembers being genuinely surprised by the warmth and enthusiasm of the HIMYM set. The conversation expands into creativity and the value of limitations, why writers are always working even when they appear to be doing nothing, Spielberg’s love of problem-solving on set, and Bob’s evolution from comedy into drama. They also talk candidly about fame, ambition, knowing when “more” isn’t necessarily better, and parenthood—including Bob’s moving reflections on missing the years when his children were young and recognizing the rare moments when grown children are ready to hear a little hard-earned wisdom from their dad.CONNECT WITH THE SHOW:Official Website (Send us your audio and written messages)InstagramTiktokREAD JOSH’S MUSELETTERS ON SUBSTACK:Subscribe HERECRAIG’S BOOK IS AVAILABLE!Head over to CRAIG’S WEBSITE to order your copy of THAT’S NOT HOW IT HAPPENED.SUPPORT PEDIATRIC CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE RESEARCH:Click HERE to learn more and donate today.FOLLOW THE OFFICE LADIES:Check out "Office Ladies" at https://officeladies.com/ or wherever you get your podcasts! Josh and Craig welcome writer Joe Kelly for a lively look back at “The Bracket,” Joe’s very first How I Met Your Mother episode. They reminisce about Joe joining the staff just before the Writers Guild strike, the frantic race to restart production afterward, and how the episode evolved into one of the show’s most memorable Barney stories. Joe reflects on learning to balance broad comedy with emotional storytelling—a lesson that later shaped Ted Lasso and Detroiters—while Craig and Josh discuss building the writers’ room, crafting Barney’s outrageous persona without losing audience sympathy, and turning a March Madness promotion into a mystery episode. They also dive into behind-the-scenes stories about the show’s collaborative writing process, memorable jokes, the creation of TedMosbyIsAJerk.com, and how the pressure of the post-strike schedule forced everyone to trust their instincts, resulting in one of Season 3’s funniest and most ambitious episodes.CONNECT WITH THE SHOW:Official Website (Send us your audio and written messages)InstagramTiktokREAD JOSH’S MUSELETTERS ON SUBSTACK:Subscribe HERECRAIG’S BOOK IS AVAILABLE!Head over to CRAIG’S WEBSITE to order your copy of THAT’S NOT HOW IT HAPPENED.SUPPORT PEDIATRIC CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE RESEARCH:Click HERE to learn more and donate today.FOLLOW THE OFFICE LADIES:Check out "Office Ladies" at https://officeladies.com/ or wherever you get your podcasts! Josh and Craig revisit “The Platinum Rule,” one of the series’ most structurally ambitious episodes, while sharing the remarkable behind-the-scenes story of how it became the only How I Met Your Mother episode produced during the 2007 Writers Guild strike. They reflect on the unusual experience of shooting without writers on set, discuss the episode’s intricate “flashback within a flashback” storytelling, and explore whether some life lessons—especially about love and relationships—can only be learned through experience. Along the way, they celebrate memorable performances from Charlene Amoia, Kristen Schaal, and Hayes MacArthur, revisit Ted’s unwavering optimism, and close with two extraordinary listener letters that examine The Platinum Rule through the lenses of psychology, storytelling, and why the show continues to provide comfort and companionship years later.Listen to EMOTIONAL CHAMP by New BuffaloCONNECT WITH THE SHOW:Official Website (Send us your audio and written messages)InstagramTiktokREAD JOSH’S MUSELETTERS ON SUBSTACK:Subscribe HERECRAIG’S BOOK IS AVAILABLE!Head over to CRAIG’S WEBSITE to order your copy of THAT’S NOT HOW IT HAPPENED.SUPPORT PEDIATRIC CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE RESEARCH:Click HERE to learn more and donate today.FOLLOW THE OFFICE LADIES:Check out "Office Ladies" at https://officeladies.com/ or wherever you get your podcasts! Josh and Craig revisit “The Yips,” candidly reflecting on why they consider it one of the weaker episodes of the series while pulling back the curtain on the realities of making network television. They discuss how a corporate mandate to feature the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show shaped the story, why Barney’s crisis of confidence still offers an interesting glimpse into his past, and how production challenges—including last-minute recasting and enormous guest-star logistics—made for an unusual week on set. Along the way, they explore the balance between art and commerce, what gives How I Met Your Mother its emotional heart, and why even the episodes that don’t fully come together still reveal fascinating stories about how the series was made. Josh and Craig revisit “Slapsgiving,” one of the series’ most beloved episodes, beginning with the latest—and perhaps fiercest yet—chapter in the battle between producer Alek Lev and his childhood best friend Joel over who truly invented the legendary “Major General” salute. (Alek did. He can say that now because he’s writing these show notes.) From there, they celebrate Matt Kuhn’s script, Orson Bean’s unforgettable guest performance as Bob, and how the episode balances outrageous comedy with genuine emotional stakes as Ted and Robin struggle to figure out whether they can really stay friends after their breakup. They also reflect on Jason Segel’s iconic “You Just Got Slapped” song, the episode’s many classic running gags, and how How I Met Your Mother created its own shared language that fans still use today. The episode closes with a thoughtful listener letter about how different characters resonate at different stages of life—from Barney in youth, to Ted while searching for love, to Marshall and Lily in marriage—highlighting the show’s remarkable ability to grow alongside its audience. Mon, 13 Jul 2026 - 101 - How We (Glass Shatters) | S3E8 "Spoiler Alert"
Josh and Craig revisit “Spoiler Alert” (Season 3, Episode 8), breaking down the episode’s central idea: how one pointed-out flaw can permanently change the way you see someone. They discuss the ethics of telling friends uncomfortable truths, the surprisingly philosophical themes of love and acceptance, and how the episode’s two mysteries—Kathy’s endless talking and Marshall’s forgotten bar exam password—fit together so elegantly. Along the way, Josh reflects on feeling personally exposed by Ted’s “intellectual snob” characterization, Craig shares behind-the-scenes stories about Stephen Lloyd’s writing, Jason Segel’s improvised songs, and the episode’s memorable sound design, and the conversation closes with a thoughtful listener letter about why How I Met Your Mother has always felt like storytelling rooted in genuine care rather than simply making people laugh. And read WHY YOU WILL MARRY THE WRONG PERSONCONNECT WITH THE SHOW:Official Website (Send us your audio and written messages)InstagramTiktokREAD JOSH’S MUSELETTERS ON SUBSTACK:Subscribe HERECRAIG’S BOOK IS AVAILABLE!Head over to CRAIG’S WEBSITE to order your copy of THAT’S NOT HOW IT HAPPENED.SUPPORT PEDIATRIC CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE RESEARCH:Click HERE to learn more and donate today.FOLLOW THE OFFICE LADIES:Check out "Office Ladies" at https://officeladies.com/ or wherever you get your podcasts! Mon, 06 Jul 2026 - 100 - How We Spent Our Summer [2007 Edition]
In this deeply personal bonus episode, Josh Radnor and Craig Thomas pause their Season 3 rewatch to revisit the life-changing summer between Seasons 2 and 3 of How I Met Your Mother. Josh opens up about struggling with the pressures of sudden fame, his increasing reliance on alcohol, and how transformative ayahuasca journeys to Brazil and Colombia led him to stop drinking and return to the show feeling calmer, more grounded, and better equipped to embrace his role as Ted Mosby. Craig then shares the heartbreaking story of his son Elliot’s birth, the terrifying weeks spent in the NICU, Elliot’s life-saving open-heart surgery, and his diagnosis with the rare genetic condition Jacobsen syndrome. The two reflect on how those parallel journeys profoundly shaped Season 3, their friendship, and the emotional core of the series, discussing themes of unconditional love, vulnerability, parenthood, finding community, and how life’s hardest moments can ultimately lead to unexpected purpose. Thu, 02 Jul 2026 - 99 - How We Met the Mosby Boys | S3E7 "Dowisetrepla"
Josh and Craig dive into Season 3’s “Dowisetrepla” with a conversation that ranges from real estate disasters to the magic of New York City. They discuss how the episode serves as a continuation of Marshall and Lily’s financial crisis from the previous week, exploring Lily’s hidden credit card debt, the couple’s impulsive apartment purchase, and why the storyline feels so grounded and emotionally real. They praise Alyson Hannigan’s performance as a guilty, panicked Lily, reflect on the stresses of buying property, and share personal stories about their own New York apartments. The hosts also revisit Ted’s CSI-inspired detective work, Barney’s surprisingly dark apartment scheme, and the enduring appeal of the show’s uniquely New York mythology. Along the way, they celebrate writer Brenda Hsueh’s work on the episode and her later success at Pixar, reminisce about other HIMYM writers’ post-show accomplishments, and end with a listener letter about friendship, chosen family, and finding unexpected new chapters in life. Mon, 29 Jun 2026 - 98 - How We Met John Cho | S3E06 "I'm Not That Guy"
In this bonus episode, Josh and Craig finally get the chance to sit down with John Cho, who played the delightfully manipulative Jefferson Coatsworth in “I’m Not That Guy.” What starts as a discussion of his HIMYM guest appearance turns into a wide-ranging conversation about comedy, acting, and career longevity. John shares why he loved playing a charming villain, reflects on the unique rhythm of HIMYM’s writing and production style, and compares it to traditional sitcoms filmed before a live audience. The three also revisit their early days in Hollywood, discuss rejection, resilience, and the unpredictable paths creative careers take, and explore how success often comes from following opportunities rather than trying to control every step. It’s a thoughtful, funny conversation about craft, friendship, and the lessons that only become clear when you look back.CONNECT WITH THE SHOW:Official Website (Send us your audio and written messages)InstagramTiktokREAD JOSH’S MUSELETTERS ON SUBSTACK:Subscribe HERECRAIG’S BOOK IS AVAILABLE!Head over to CRAIG’S WEBSITE to order your copy of THAT’S NOT HOW IT HAPPENED.SUPPORT PEDIATRIC CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE RESEARCH:Click HERE to learn more and donate today.FOLLOW THE OFFICE LADIES:Check out "Office Ladies" at https://officeladies.com/ or wherever you get your podcasts! Thu, 25 Jun 2026 - 97 - How We Met Ted Mosby [with John Cho] | S3E6 "I'm Not That Guy"
Josh and Craig dive into Season 3, Episode 6, “I’m Not That Guy,” and find a surprisingly rich episode hiding beneath the jokes. They discuss Jonathan Groff’s first credited HIMYM script (the writer, not the actor), Marshall’s struggle between environmental idealism and financial security, Lily’s secret credit-card debt and how unusual it was to make her the one in the wrong, and Ted’s bizarre discovery that a porn actor has adopted his name as a tribute. Along the way, they reflect on money as a real concern for twenty-somethings, the challenges of finding your path after college, Josh’s own early Hollywood setback, and the way HIMYM tried to let life continue from episode to episode instead of resetting every week. The episode also includes a bonus excerpt from a later interview with John Cho, who talks about playing the charmingly evil Jefferson Coatsworth, working without a studio audience, and why HIMYM’s dense joke-writing stood out. Craig also shares the real-life inspiration for Marshall’s environmental-law storyline, drawn from college friend Noah Garrison, while the episode opens and closes with emotional listener messages that lead to discussions of congenital heart disease research and Craig’s novel, That’s Not How It Happened.CONNECT WITH THE SHOW:Official Website (Send us your audio and written messages)InstagramTiktokREAD JOSH’S MUSELETTERS ON SUBSTACK:Subscribe HERECRAIG’S BOOK IS AVAILABLE!Head over to CRAIG’S WEBSITE to order your copy of THAT’S NOT HOW IT HAPPENED.SUPPORT PEDIATRIC CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE RESEARCH:Click HERE to learn more and donate today.FOLLOW THE OFFICE LADIES:Check out "Office Ladies" at https://officeladies.com/ or wherever you get your podcasts! Mon, 22 Jun 2026 - 96 - How We Blah Blah [with Gloria Calderón Kellett] | S3E5 "How We Met Everyone Else"
Josh and Craig are joined by writer and producer Gloria Calderón Kellett to discuss “How I Met Everyone Else,” one of the most mythology-rich episodes of the series. Gloria shares the origins of fan-favorite ideas like Blah Blah, the sandwich euphemism, the Hot/Crazy Scale, and the various “how we met” stories that flesh out the gang’s shared history. The conversation explores the episode’s use of Ted as an unreliable narrator, the challenge of building authentic long-term relationships through Marshall and Lily, and the many real-life experiences that inspired the show’s stories. They also reminisce about working with future filmmaking superstar Phil Lord, Abby Spencer’s memorable guest appearance, the early days of the writers’ room, and how HIMYM captured a generation’s experiences with friendship, dating, and growing up. The episode closes with a heartfelt listener letter about a mother who bonded with her sons through the show over many years, underscoring the lasting emotional impact of both the series and the podcast.CONNECT WITH THE SHOW:Official Website (Send us your audio and written messages)InstagramTiktokREAD JOSH’S MUSELETTERS ON SUBSTACK:Subscribe HERECRAIG’S BOOK IS AVAILABLE!Head over to CRAIG’S WEBSITE to order your copy of THAT’S NOT HOW IT HAPPENED.SUPPORT PEDIATRIC CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE RESEARCH:Click HERE to learn more and donate today.FOLLOW THE OFFICE LADIES:Check out "Office Ladies" at https://officeladies.com/ or wherever you get your podcasts! Mon, 15 Jun 2026 - 95 - How We Met Tiny Barney | S3E4 "Little Boys"
Josh and Craig revisit Season 3’s “Little Boys,” written by Courtney Kang, and talk about Ted’s unusually confident single-guy era, Barney’s wildly manipulative plan to outplay Ted, and Robin’s hysterical fear of children while dating a dad from Lily’s kindergarten class. They spend a lot of time praising Cobie Smulders’ growing comedic confidence, point out hidden Ghostbusters references in the episode, laugh about accidentally mentioning subprime lenders before the 2008 financial crash, and reflect on the awkwardness of acting and performing comedy on set. The episode ends with a heartfelt letter from a fan who explains how How I Met Your Mother helped her through loneliness, college, heartbreak, and eventually finding love. Mon, 08 Jun 2026 - 94 - General Questions | Instagram Live 3/4/26
This Instagram Live bonus episode of How We Made Your Mother features Josh Radnor answering fan questions with producer Alek Lev. Josh reflects on rediscovering the show while rewatching it with his wife Jordana, including how his relationship with fans has changed now that he sees the series more from their perspective. They also talk about specific behind-the-scenes details—like the blue French horn prop that Josh kept from the set—and discuss memorable guest stars such as Martin Short. The conversation ranges widely, touching on music used in the show (including Belle and Sebastian and Iggy Pop), the origin of the rewatch podcast, advice about breaking into film and television today, and how How I Met Your Mother has helped viewers through difficult moments in their lives. The episode closes with a more philosophical discussion about memory, nostalgia, and how revisiting the show years later reveals new meaning in both the series and the lives of the people who made it. Thu, 04 Jun 2026 - 93 - How Ted Won the Belt [with Dave Hemingson] | S3E3 "Third Wheel"
Josh and Craig are joined by Dave Hemmingson to revisit “Third Wheel,” the Season 3 fan-favorite where newly single Ted unexpectedly finds himself navigating the possibility of a threesome with returning guest stars Busy Philipps and Danica McKellar. Dave talks about joining the writers’ room during a pivotal moment for the series, helping launch the “free-range Ted” era after the Robin breakup, and crafting the episode’s frantic, almost real-time energy inspired by farce and physical comedy. The group digs into Barney’s surprising vulnerability, Marshall and Lily’s enthusiastic “mission control” support of Ted’s big night, the origins of the tramp stamp storyline, and whether Ted actually “won the belt.” Along the way, they reflect on why the episode still works: balancing absurd comedy, emotional honesty, and one of the weirdly sweetest stories HIMYM ever told. Mon, 01 Jun 2026 - 92 - How Robin Met Robin | S3E2 "We're Not From Here"
Josh and Craig talk about “We’re Not From Here,” the second half of the Gael mini-arc, and how the episode feels a little more like a classic sitcom with three separate storylines: Robin trying to make a vacation romance work in real life, Ted and Barney pretending to be tourists to pick up women, and Marshall freaking out over Lily’s “death letter.” They laugh a lot about Jason Segel’s completely committed insanity, Robin almost pulling a gun on people, Ted passionately defending New York over New Jersey, and how absurdly old they made Marshall and Lily look in the 2029 flash-forward. They also talk about Chris Harris’ writing style, Enrique Iglesias’ guest spot, and how Ted in early Season 3 is trying really hard to become less “romantic Ted” after the breakup. The episode ends with a really sweet surprise letter from producer Emily Blumberg about growing up loving HIMYM and eventually winding up working on the podcast. Mon, 25 May 2026 - 91 - Presenting: Dead Pilots Society table read of "Gimme Five" by Craig Thomas & Carter Bays
On another very special Bonus Episode of HWMYM, we’re bringing you a table read of Gimme Five, a second pilot that Craig and Carter (wrote not long after HIMYM ended). And once again, this pilot never got made (until now!). They co-wrote this pilot with legendary writer Peter Tolan, whose credits include The Larry Sanders Show, Rescue Me, Analyze This, Analyze That, and many more. Here's the log line: It's 1985, and Gimme Five is the number two family sitcom in America. But behind the scenes of this feel-good show is a dysfunctional workplace family on the verge of self-destruction. Showrunner Cliff McConnell must somehow keep it together and keep being funny in the midst of his newborn son's health crisis. Sharp, outrageous, and wildly funny, Gimme Five gives a behind-the-scenes look at comedy writing that feels both absurd and strangely authentic. It may also be one of the funniest pilots ever featured on Dead Pilots Society. Major Content Warning *salute* — Definitely think twice about listening to this one with small children in the room. You may hear something that offends you early on in this pilot, but please stick with it. Our cast for the show includes Taran Killam (SNL, High Potential, Stumble), Chris Diamantopoulos (Beavis and Butthead, Silicon Valley), Scott Foley (Scandal, Scream 7), Dallas Goldtooth (Reservation Dogs), Tami Sagher (Inside Amy Schumer), Chris DiStefano (stand up), James Urbaniak (Venture Brothers), Isabella Gomez (One Day at a Time, Shrinking), Cyrina Fiallo (High Potential, 911 Lonestar), Alyssa Limperis (What We Do In the Shadows), Burl Moseley (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend). Thu, 21 May 2026 - 90 - How We... Dary! | S3E1 "Wait for It"
Josh and Craig kick off Season 3 of How We Made Your Mother by revisiting “Wait For It,” while also reflecting on the emotionally massive hiatus between Seasons 2 and 3 of How I Met Your Mother. Craig opens up about the birth of his son Elliot and the terrifying medical challenges their family faced, while Josh talks about traveling to Brazil and Colombia, working with ayahuasca, quitting drinking, and returning to the show feeling transformed. From there, they dive into the episode itself: Ted’s breakup beard, the “winning the breakup” dynamic with Robin, Enrique Iglesias as Gael, the infamous butterfly tramp stamp, blackout Ted behavior, and how Season 3 marked a deliberate attempt to shake up Ted’s character beyond the hopeless romantic archetype. They also discuss Jason Segel’s fearless comedy instincts, behind-the-scenes stories about wardrobe, product placement (“the Cadillac of rebound guys”), the evolution of terms like “tramp stamp” and “cougar,” and why the Ted/Robin apartment-door argument remains one of Josh’s favorite scenes in the series. The episode closes with a heartfelt message from former production coordinator Kelly about joining the show during Season 3, plus a moving fan letter from a public health nurse who explains how both HIMYM and the podcast have become a source of comfort and hope in her life. This Instagram Live bonus episode of How We Made Your Mother features Josh Radnor and Craig Thomas answering fan questions and sharing behind-the-scenes stories from How I Met Your Mother. Early in the conversation they pause to remember James Van Der Beek, reflecting on his fearless, against-type performance in “Sandcastles in the Sand” and how generous and grounded he was when guest-starring on the show. The discussion then turns to production details—like how the crew created the show’s big rain scenes on the Fox lot using massive water rigs and blackout tarps to simulate a New York storm in sunny Los Angeles. Craig also talks about how season two intentionally reshuffled the characters—Ted and Robin as a couple, Marshall newly single, and Barney without his wingman—which opened up new stories and dynamics. Along the way they field lighter questions about things like whether someone could open a real-life bar called Puzzles, and they explain how the podcast came together after Josh started rewatching the series with his wife Jordana and decided to turn the experience into a full rewatch show with producer Alek Lev. Fri, 01 May 2026 - 85 - "That's Not How it Happened" | Instagram Live 1/11/26
This special How We Made Your Mother Instagram Live episode features producer Alek Lev in conversation with Craig Thomas, co-creator of How I Met Your Mother, centered on Craig’s novel That’s Not How It Happened. Over an intimate, wide-ranging 54-minute discussion, Craig unpacks the personal origins of the book—drawing from his experience parenting a son with a disability—while exploring language, representation, and the loneliness parents often feel navigating disability without a shared vocabulary or community. The conversation traces how those lived experiences intersected with his time on HIMYM, why he ultimately chose not to mirror his real life directly through Marshall and Lily, and how years of frustration trying to tell disability-centered stories in Hollywood led him to write a novel instead. Craig dives into the book’s multi-perspective, non-linear structure (very much in the HIMYM storytelling DNA), his commitment to avoiding both “inspiration porn” and tragedy narratives, and his goal of making a story about disability that is genuinely funny, human, and messy. Along the way, audience questions spark candid reflections on friendship, guilt, advocacy, inclusion, creative responsibility, and the idea that every character—and every person—is standing on some kind of life “cliff.” The live concludes with gratitude to the disability community, readers who felt seen by the book, and the shared hope that telling these stories helps people stay connected instead of pulling away. Mon, 27 Apr 2026 - 84 - General Questions | Instagram Live 2/4/26
This February 4 Instagram Live episode of How We Made Your Mother brings together Josh Radnor, Craig Thomas, and producer Alek Lev for an expansive, warm, and frequently hilarious conversation that doubles as a love letter to the show, the podcast, and the community that’s grown around both. Broadcasting at a new midday time to reach international fans, the trio talk about why they started the podcast, how listener voice notes and letters have become its emotional core, and what it’s been like revisiting How I Met Your Mother nearly two decades later. Topics range from New York winters, unrealistic sitcom apartments, long-term storytelling payoffs and accidental continuity errors, to Craig’s emotional reflections on the end of The Late Show legacy after his formative years writing for Late Show with David Letterman. Josh opens up about rediscovering pride in the series after years of distance, becoming a fan of the show himself, and how the podcast has softened his relationship with Ted Mosby and the audience. The group shares behind-the-scenes stories about the origins of running jokes like the Major General salute, the ripple effects of tiny life choices, fan proposals sparked by the podcast, and the optimism behind the phrase “People Will Dance,” which may soon become merch. Along the way they shout out fans tuning in from around the world, reflect on music’s role in the show (and Josh’s late-in-life songwriting journey), and close on the idea that HIMYM now belongs to its viewers as much as its creators—something all three clearly cherish. Mon, 20 Apr 2026 - 83 - How We Met a Listener: Jessica [SPOILER Alert!]
Major Spoiler Warning! This episode contains major spoilers for the entire run of How I Met Your Mother, including the series finale and where the characters ultimately end up. If you haven’t finished the show yet and want to avoid spoilers, you may want to skip this one and come back later. The conversation also goes deeply into themes of grief, loss, and death, which some listeners may find emotionally heavy. Josh and Craig share a deeply personal conversation with Jessica, a fan whose life took on unexpected parallels with the show after her husband died from a congenital heart condition shortly before the podcast launched. Jessica reflects on what the series—and especially the finale—came to mean to her after experiencing loss, while Josh and Craig talk about the show’s long-running themes of love, time, change, and the possibility of finding happiness again even after heartbreak. Mon, 13 Apr 2026 - 82 - How We (...Wait for It...) | S2E22 "Something Blue"
Josh and Craig wrap up Season 2 by revisiting the emotional finale where Marshall and Lily get married and Ted and Robin realize they can’t build a future together despite loving each other. They talk about the episode’s clever mystery structure, the heartbreaking couch scene, the meaning behind the title “Something Blue,” and the hopeful reset that sends Ted and Barney back out as wingmen. The episode also includes the story of a real marriage proposal that happened during filming of the café scene, reflections on how the show balances comedy with real relationship truths, and a moving – anonymous – fan letter about a couple whose relationship began over a shared love of the show. Mon, 06 Apr 2026 - 81 - General Questions | Instagram Live 1/28/26
This Instagram Live episode of How We Made Your Mother features Josh Radnor, Craig Thomas, and producer Alek Lev in a relaxed, funny, and reflective conversation about revisiting the first two seasons of How I Met Your Mother nearly 20 years later. They talk about learning to be kinder to their younger selves, favorite memories from set (including cozy breakfast scenes, hair-and-makeup miracles, and moments when the scale of the show suddenly felt magical), the grind behind the joy, and why struggle is part of meaningful creative work. Fan questions spark stories about deleted scenes, bloopers, iconic supporting characters (Ranjit, Sandy Rivers, Stuart, Brad), music’s central role in the show and their lives, tattoos inspired by HIMYM, advice for aspiring actors and writers, and Craig’s journey writing his novel That’s Not How It Happened. The trio also welcome listeners discovering the podcast for the first time, celebrate its global audience, shout out the Office Ladies Network, and invite fans to keep the conversation going through letters, voice notes, and future bonus episodes. Thu, 02 Apr 2026 - 80 - How We Got it Toupee Off | S2E21 "Something Borrowed"
Josh and Craig break down How I Met Your Mother Season 2, Episode 21, “Something Borrowed,” the chaotic first half of Marshall and Lily’s wedding finale. They revisit how the episode leans into the idea that every element of Lily’s carefully planned wedding begins to unravel—from Marshall accidentally shaving a reverse mohawk into his hair to Scooter showing up determined to stop the ceremony. The hosts talk about the technical side of filming Jason Segel’s shaving scene (and how hard it was for everyone not to break), the escalating farce that pushes the wedding off course, and the way the writers used these disasters to set up the emotional payoff of the finale. They also reflect on the show’s growing commitment to serialized storytelling, planting clues and callbacks that reward long-time viewers while still delivering big comedy moments, and how the imperfect, improvised version of the wedding ultimately reinforces one of the show’s core themes: the moments that go wrong are often the ones that reveal what really matters. Thu, 26 Mar 2026 - 78 - How We Met NPH Pt. 2 [with Neil Patrick Harris] | S2E20 "Showdown"
Josh and Craig continue their conversation with Neil Patrick Harris, reflecting on their working dynamic during How I Met Your Mother and how Barney and Ted’s very different roles on the show sometimes created a strange but productive tension between the actors. They talk candidly about early insecurities, the pressure of carrying different storytelling responsibilities—Josh often delivering the emotional core while Neil chased the biggest laughs—and how that contrast ultimately helped create the chemistry that defined the show. The discussion then shifts to the Season 2 episode “Showdown,” including Barney’s obsession with The Price Is Right, Ted’s struggle to write a best-man speech for Marshall, and memorable bits like Marshall’s belief in ghosts, Lily and Marshall’s intense co-dependence, and the absurd sincerity of Barney asking Bob Barker if he’s proud of him. Along the way they swap behind-the-scenes memories—from Neil’s obsessive continuity tricks for the editors to subtle moments that planted the seeds for Barney and Robin—and reflect on how, years later, they can finally look back at the experience with perspective, affection, and a deeper understanding of what each of them was bringing to the show. Mon, 23 Mar 2026 - 77 - How We Met NPH [with Neil Patrick Harris] | S2E20 "Showdown"
Josh and Craig are joined by Neil Patrick Harris to revisit How I Met Your Mother Season 2’s “Showdown,” the episode where Barney appears on The Price Is Right believing that host Bob Barker might be his father. Neil reflects on the lasting cultural impact of Barney Stinson, the freedom the show’s unusual hybrid format gave actors to experiment with comedy, and the physical-comedy influences—from Buster Keaton to Cirque du Soleil—that shaped his performance. The conversation dives into Barney’s mix of bravado and vulnerability, how the writers gradually revealed the emotional core beneath the suit, and why the character’s deep loyalty to his friends often drove the story more than his playboy antics. They also share memories of filming on the real Price Is Right set, discuss how the show’s early “on the bubble” years kept everyone creatively hungry, and explore the idea that the heightened moments of the series may represent Ted’s exaggerated memories rather than literal reality. And we end on HWMYM’s first… cliffhanger! CONNECT WITH THE SHOW: Official Website (Send us your audio and written messages) Instagram READ JOSH’S MUSELETTERS ON SUBSTACK: Subscribe HERE. Mon, 16 Mar 2026 - 76 - How Barney Became Best Man | S2E19 "Bachelor Party"
In this episode of the How We Made Your Mother podcast, Josh Radnor and Craig Thomas revisit HIMYM Season 2, Episode 19, “Bachelor Party,” unpacking the dual-story structure that follows Marshall’s disastrous bachelor party and Lily’s painfully awkward bachelorette gathering. They discuss how the episode satirizes the clichés around bachelor parties—especially the idea that marriage ends a man’s freedom—while highlighting the awkward reality behind those traditions. Much of the conversation focuses on standout comedy moments, including Robin mistakenly bringing a sex-toy gift to a family-style bridal gathering and the extended antique-sewing-machine gag, as well as the physical comedy and silent reactions from Cobie Smulders and guest actor Kay Callan. Josh and Craig also reflect on guest star Matt Boren’s deadpan performance as Stuart, the challenge of referencing pop culture that younger viewers might not know, and how the writers’ room constructed jokes through collaborative pitching. The episode ultimately emphasizes the emotional payoff of Barney secretly flying to San Francisco to convince Lily to return to Marshall—revealing that despite Barney’s chaos and cynicism, he was the reason their wedding happens at all, a twist that reframes both this episode and earlier moments in the season. Mon, 09 Mar 2026 - 75 - How We Didn't Move | S2E18 "Moving Day"
This week the guys revisit “Moving Day” and end up having one of those episodes where the rewatch turns personal fast. What starts as talk about Ted moving out spirals into a bigger conversation about how much everyone in the group depends on him, why Barney’s over-the-top sabotage is really fear of abandonment, and how relationships don’t have to move at anyone else’s timeline. Craig gets unexpectedly emotional talking about calling his son down the hall, Josh brings in some real-life perspective from Jordana about pacing in relationships, and they both admit this episode is stronger than they remembered. There’s also some great behind-the-scenes stuff about the moving van set, Neil’s Letterman impression, and how certain character dynamics were fully clicking by Season 2. Funny, reflective, and a little sneaky-heartfelt — very much one of those episodes where the podcast becomes about life as much as the show. Mon, 02 Mar 2026 - 74 - General Questions | Instagram Live 1/21/26
This How We Made Your Mother Instagram Live brings together Josh Radnor, Craig Thomas, and producer Alek Lev for a wide-ranging, funny, and unexpectedly heartfelt conversation about the podcast, the enduring legacy of How I Met Your Mother, and why the show continues to resonate with new generations around the world. The trio talk candidly about revisiting the series nearly 20 years later, the joys and challenges of serialized storytelling, favorite episodes, emotional arcs from the first two seasons, iconic props (yes, the Blue French Horn makes an appearance), and unforgettable music moments that helped define the show’s tone. They also reflect on writing lessons learned, trusting the intelligence of the audience, the comfort the series offers younger viewers in uncertain times, and how optimism (“people will dance”) sits at the core of the show’s worldview. Along the way, they answer fan questions live from across the globe, tease future podcast guests, plug Craig’s novel That’s Not How It Happened, celebrate Josh’s upcoming music, and invite listeners to become part of the growing HWMYM community through voice notes, letters, and shared memories. Thu, 26 Feb 2026 - 73 - How We Walked 500 Miles | S2E17 "Arrivederci, Fiero"
This episode dives into “Arrivederci, Fiero” as a love letter to friendship, nostalgia, and the messy logic of long-running TV. Craig and Josh unpack fan questions about continuity errors (when did Barney learn to drive?), lean happily on the “unreliable narrator” defense, and explain how the show’s triumphant orchestral version of “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” came together. The heart of the episode comes through two deeply personal listener letters—one from a college student whose real-life Fiero breakdown led to lasting friendships, and another tracing a red Mustang, the Olive Theory, and a marriage back to the emotional roadmap the show provided. Together, the conversation lands on why vulnerability, chosen family, and sincerity are what helped the series—and Ted—age so well. Mon, 23 Feb 2026 - 72 - How Men Are All Dogs | S2E16 "Stuff"
This episode is a loose, funny, and surprisingly thoughtful conversation about “Stuff”—both the How I Met Your Mother episode and the larger idea of what we owe our partners and friends when it comes to honesty, history, and emotional baggage. Josh and Craig dig into why the episode works as a joke machine (the mermaid debate, the slap bet payoff, Marshall’s infamous pants, Barney’s doomed robot musical, and Ted getting dragged into Lily’s play), while also unpacking the deeper philosophical question at its center: how much of your past should come into a new relationship. Along the way they share vivid on-set memories (dog-licking trauma, breaking during Jason Segel’s physical comedy), talk about filmmaking techniques like visual morphs and fast-forwarded fights, celebrate the audacity of needle-dropping Iggy Pop on CBS, and reflect at length on the creative legacy and personal impact of Rob Reiner—connecting How I Met Your Mother to When Harry Met Sally, The Princess Bride, and Stand By Me. The result is a wide-ranging, affectionate, and honest look at comedy, craft, friendship, and the messiness of loving people while carrying your past with you. Mon, 16 Feb 2026 - 71 - How It Was All Ted’s Fault | S2E15 "Lucky Penny"
Josh and Craig walk through why this episode works so well, focusing on how the reverse storytelling lets the show explore blame, fate, and Ted’s instinct to overanalyze every turn his life takes. They talk about how the chain of small choices spirals backward until Ted realizes he’s the one who started it all—and how Future Ted reframes the missed flight as something that had to happen. The conversation touches on Carter Bays’ influence, Neil Patrick Harris’s marathon storyline and physical comedy, and the early-2007 “old tech” details that ground the episode in its moment. They also reflect on how tightly everything is built—no wasted scenes, no disconnected B-stories—and wrap up with a fan letter that captures how the show continues to resonate with viewers long after it first aired. Mon, 09 Feb 2026 - 70 - How We Sensory Deprivated [with Rob Greenberg] | S2E14 "Monday Night Football"
This episode of How We Made Your Mother is a fun, heartfelt hang centered on Monday Night Football (Season 2, Episode 14) of How I Met Your Mother, with director Rob Greenberg joining the guys to reminisce. It kicks off with a surprise listener marriage proposal, then rolls into stories from the early days of the show, Rob being the steady hand during the pilot, and what it was like directing one of the most inventive, fast-moving episodes of the series. They talk Super Bowl timing, visual gags, Barney’s gambling origin story, and why the episode works so well even though no one remembers who won the game—because it was never about that. The conversation stays light, funny, and reflective, wrapping up with a lovely fan letter and an original song inspired by the show, all reinforcing the same idea: it’s the time spent together that really matters. Mon, 02 Feb 2026 - 69 - How We Raised Our Columns | S2E13 "Columns"
In this episode of How We Made Your Mother, Josh, Craig, and Alek dive into Season 2’s “Columns,” which explores the unexpected loneliness of becoming the boss. The conversation centers on Ted Mosby’s role reversal with Hammond Druthers (played memorably by Bryan Cranston), drawing directly from Craig and Carter Bays’ real experiences suddenly becoming showrunners with no training and realizing that success can be isolating. The hosts reflect on gossip, power, firing people, and the strange emotional distance that comes with authority, while also celebrating writer Matt Kuhn’s first-ever TV script and his journey from writers’ assistant to successful showrunner—an example of raising your hand, doing the unglamorous work, and being noticed. Along the way, they unpack the episode’s old-school A/B story structure, the nude Marshall painting subplot, classic jokes (new d’art, Margarita Fridays), and behind-the-scenes memories, before closing with heartfelt listener letters that underscore how How I Met Your Mother continues to soundtrack people’s real lives in nonlinear, meaningful ways. Mon, 26 Jan 2026 - 68 - How We Entered The Lobby | S2E12 "First Time in New York"
This week’s episode is a big, warm, lore-heavy love letter to one of How I Met Your Mother’s most meaningful episodes. Josh and Craig talk about why “First Time in New York” works so well: filling in backstories, sneaking past network standards with euphemisms, and still making real present-day moves like Robin finally saying “I love you.” They dig into the Dirty Dancing sequence (yes, it cost a lot), Lucy Hale’s early guest spot, Barney’s secretly heartbreaking virginity story, Marshall and Lily’s lobby-vs-top-of-the-building debate, and Ted’s eternal romance with the Empire State Building. Along the way, they get reflective about how we edit our own memories, why stories matter, and how HIMYM has become a comfort show for people all over the world—ending with emotional listener letters, New York recommendations, and a reminder that people will, in fact, dance. Mon, 19 Jan 2026 - 67 - How We Met That Grinch | S2E11 "How Lily Stole Christmas"
Josh Radnor and Craig Thomas revisit Season 2, Episode 11, “How Lily Stole Christmas,” the show’s first real Christmas episode—and one of its most emotionally honest. They talk about the fallout from Marshall and Lily’s breakup, especially Ted’s complicated position as best friend to both of them, and how the episode hinges on a single censored insult (the infamous “Grinch”) caught on an answering machine—an extremely 2006 plot device. The conversation digs into what a best friend actually owes you after a breakup, why Ted’s anger at Lily is about more than just defending Marshall, and how that confrontation ends up being about friendship, hurt feelings, and chosen family. Along the way they shout out Barney’s sickness subplot, Christmas movie influences like A Christmas Story and Love Actually, and reflect on why this episode still hits hard for fans who return to it every holiday season as a comfort watch. Mon, 12 Jan 2026 - 66 - How We Met James [with Wayne Brady] | S2E10 "Single Stamina"
In this episode of How We Made Your Mother, Josh and Craig welcome the brilliant Wayne Brady to revisit “Single Stamina,” the Season 2 episode that introduced Barney’s gay, Black brother James. Together they unpack how Wayne came to the show, what it felt like to embody this new character, and how the episode balanced outrageous comedy with genuine heart. They discuss James as both brother and father figure to Barney, the themes of aging, vulnerability, and growth that define the show, and how the episode’s subtle pro–gay-marriage message felt quietly radical in 2006. Wayne shares memories of working with Neil Patrick Harris, his nerves walking onto set, and how he approaches comedy and fear as a performer. Josh and Craig reflect on the episode’s legacy, its GLAAD Media Award nomination, and how it captured HIMYM’s mix of humor, heart, and social progressiveness. Mon, 05 Jan 2026 - 65 - Flashback: How That Wasn't Moby | S1E11 "The Limo"
To celebrate New Years, we are flashing back to our Season 1 rewatch of “The Limo.” Josh and Craig recall the episode’s ambition to be a “simple shoot” that turned out to be one of the most technically challenging due to the cramped limo set, and share behind-the-scenes stories like Jason Segel’s triumphant foggy entrance, the difficulty of getting camera shots in the limo, and the running joke of “the circuits are jammed.” They marvel at the Emmy-winning cinematography, the comic perfection of Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love a Bad Name,” and how the episode balances magical realism with emotional honesty. Josh highlights the cinematic final shot and the episode’s theme—that life’s unexpected detours are all part of the journey. They praise guest stars like Kathleen Perkins (Mary Beth) and JP Manoux (Not Moby), reflect on their own formative pop culture experiences, and read fan letters, including one from a Canadian listener whose wedding was filled with HIMYM references. Jordana, Josh’s wife and a clinical psychologist, closes with an insightful commentary on the spiritual lesson embedded in Ted’s narration: not everything has a happy ending, but it’s all important. Mon, 29 Dec 2025 - 64 - How We Met Robin Sparkles [with Cobie Smulders] | S2E9 "Slap Bet"
In this episode of How We Made Your Mother, Josh Radnor and Craig Thomas revisit one of the most iconic episodes of How I Met Your Mother: Season 2, Episode 9, “Slap Bet,” with special guest Cobie Smulders. The conversation dives deep into the origin and impact of Robin Sparkles, from the wild writers’ room pitch to the massive, risky production of the full “Let’s Go to the Mall” music video—shot on an extra day, with choreography, wigs, dancers, and a full pop song that went on to live far beyond the episode itself. Cobie shares candid memories of recording the song (green apples, whiskey, nerves, and all), learning the choreography, and how revealing this secret pop-star past fundamentally unlocked a lighter, sillier, more intimate side of Robin Scherbatsky. Josh and Craig reflect on how the episode introduced not just Robin Sparkles, but also the slap bet, the slap bet commissioner, and a storytelling confidence that helped define the series’ future. The episode also features deeply moving listener letters, including one read by Cobie, underscoring how HIMYM has become a source of comfort, philosophy, nostalgia, and emotional connection for fans—proving that even the funniest episodes are ultimately about vulnerability, love, and letting yourself be truly known. Mon, 22 Dec 2025 - 63 - How To Play Xing Hai Shi Bu Xing | S2E8 “Atlantic City”
In this episode, Josh and Craig revisit Season 2, Episode 8: “Atlantic City,” written by Maria Ferrari, who started as a writer’s assistant before becoming a staff writer. They discuss the unusual challenge of writing a road-trip episode that takes the whole gang out of their usual sets and how that led to one of the longest rewrite nights of the early seasons. The conversation covers how the story’s emotional center—Lily trying to escape judgment by eloping with Marshall only to realize she can’t run from family—finally clicked during late-night rewrites, and how the episode became a metaphor about facing what you’re avoiding. Josh recalls on-set memories, like Ted’s Twizzler moment and Robin’s bikini-shirt gag, while Craig explains the origins of Barney’s fake Chinese gambling game (“Deal or No Deal,” a jab at the rival show). They also talk about guest star Kate Micucci, who sends in a warm voice memo about her brief role, and close with reflections on Cheers, improv, extras’ pay, the pressure of 22-episode seasons, and the meaning of the final song “Sink to the Bottom with You” by Fountains of Wayne—an anthem for commitment, even when it means sinking together. Mon, 15 Dec 2025 - 62 - Preview: Dinner’s On Me with Guest Josh Radnor
Josh recently sat down with his friend Jesse Tyler Ferguson for an episode of Jesse's podcast "Dinner's On Me." Both Josh and Jesse were on hit sitcoms during a very particular moment in TV's metamorphosis, and they've both had on-going, evolving relationships with the characters they played on those shows. Here's a preview of their conversation...
Thu, 11 Dec 2025 - 61 - How We Met Ol' Swarley | S2E7 "Swarley"
Josh and Craig are joined by writer Greg Malins, who co-ran Friends before joining How I Met Your Mother for Season 2. They revisit the episode “Swarley” (aired December 8 2006), talking about how Greg helped shape the show’s tone, the accidental (or maybe subconscious) Friends dig in the coffee-shop cold open, and how the “Swarley” name was coined by Rob Greenberg. Greg reveals a never-before-revealed admission about a joke he… borrowed from Friends for this episode. The group discusses Marshall and Lily’s reunion scene, Robin Sparkles’ early origins, the importance of showing Barney lose for once, and how the cast’s joy made the “Swarley” storyline unforgettable. They end by answering a listener question from @SwarleyMemes about why the show’s humor still resonates today—deciding it’s because HIMYM’s jokes, like “Swarley” itself, come from love and timeless wordplay. Mon, 08 Dec 2025 - 60 - How We Broke Bad [with Bryan Cranston] | S2E6 "Aldrin Justice"
Season two, episode six of How We Made Your Mother features a special guest: the legendary Bryan Cranston, who joins Josh Radnor and Craig Thomas to revisit his first appearance as Hammond Druthers in “Aldrin Justice.” Cranston reflects on taking the role right after Malcolm in the Middle ended, how he almost didn’t get Breaking Bad if Fox had ordered another Malcolm season, and how one X-Files episode led Vince Gilligan to cast him as Walter White. The three dive into acting lessons, career timing, and luck—plus Cranston’s thoughts on confidence, craft, and why good writing is the only thing worth chasing. They talk about the hidden humanity behind Druthers’ egotism, the joy of unhinged characters, and Jane Seymour’s hilarious turn as the original “cougar.” Josh and Craig share behind-the-scenes stories about the episode’s writing, Lily’s “karma police” subplot, and early uses of the word “cougar,” while reflecting on jokes that don’t hold up and the importance of owning creative missteps. The conversation closes with thoughtful discussions about teaching, artistry, and the strange, lucky chain of moments that connect How I Met Your Mother to Breaking Bad. Mon, 01 Dec 2025 - 59 - Flashback: How We Birthed a Turkey | S1E9 "Belly Full of Turkey"
To celebrate Thanksgiving, we are flashing back to our Season 1 rewatch of “Belly Full of Turkey.” Josh and Craig reflect on Lily’s hilarious but heartfelt journey into Marshall’s giant Minnesota family, while Ted, Robin, and Barney navigate their own offbeat holiday at a food shelter (and later, a strip club). They discuss Alyson Hannigan’s standout performance, the visual comedy of a Brooklyn girl in a land of giants, and the deeper emotional themes of family, identity, and partnership. With behind-the-scenes stories, a moving listener letter from Australia, and insights from Jordana about in-laws and marriage, this episode blends big laughs with big feelings—just like the show always did. Mon, 24 Nov 2025 - 58 - How We Got Ridonk [with Joe Manganiello] | S2E5 "World's Greatest Couple"
Season two, episode five of How We Made Your Mother dives into “World’s Greatest Couple,” where Lily moves in with Barney, and Marshall finds unexpected companionship with Brad—played by guest star Joe Manganiello, who joins Josh and Craig for the episode. The hosts break down how this fan-favorite storyline came together: Lily’s disastrous apartment, the debut of Barney’s Fortress of Barnitude, and the surprisingly sweet “odd couple” chemistry between Lily and Barney. They also reveal behind-the-scenes details about Joe’s casting, his Carnegie Mellon roots, and how his vulnerable, hilarious energy made Brad a standout character. Josh and Craig discuss the episode’s mystery structure, the craftsmanship behind the Murphy bed gag, and Barney’s hidden loneliness beneath all the bravado. Joe shares stories about his early days in Hollywood, his “bros at brunch” fame, and what could’ve been if Brad had become a series regular. The episode closes with heartfelt listener letters from Emma in Canada and Brenda in New Jersey, reflecting on breakups, creative growth, and how HIMYM helps fans rediscover hope and strength through changing chapters of life. Mon, 17 Nov 2025 - 57 - How We Met the Office Ladies [with Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey]
Josh Radnor and Craig Thomas welcome Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey of Office Ladies for an “extra-extra-special” crossover episode that celebrates the shared DNA between The Office and How I Met Your Mother. The four trade stories about auditioning, early career struggles, and the naïve confidence it took to chase a dream to Los Angeles. Jenna and Angela recall the pressure of remaking the British Office and the moment they knew Diversity Day proved their show’s originality; Josh and Craig compare that to creating HIMYM in the shadow of Friends. They discuss manifesting success, the comfort of ensemble storytelling, nostalgia for network-era TV, and what it means to have made “comfort shows” that helped fans through hard times. The episode closes with a listener letter from Chile about how HIMYM quite literally changed one fan’s life—and a toast to everyone who’s ever found solace, laughter, and a sense of home in these two beloved worlds. Thu, 13 Nov 2025 - 56 - How that Wasn't Ted | S2E4 "Ted Mosby: Architect"
In this episode of How We Made Your Mother, Josh Radnor and Craig Thomas revisit Season 2, Episode 4, “Ted Mosby: Architect,” which aired October 9, 2006. They reflect on the show’s use of music—like the Decemberists’ “Here I Dreamt I Was an Architect”—and how songs became part of Ted’s emotional language. They discuss the episode’s mystery structure, Robin and Ted’s first fight, and the episode’s emotional ending, where Ted shares his architectural dream with Robin. The two dive deep into the craft of storytelling, the symbolism of architecture, and the “HIMYM” balance between comedy and emotional truth. They also talk about Field of Dreams, music supervision, and fan letters that show how the series became a source of comfort and inspiration for viewers. General Questions we Sort of Answer: How did Spokane get chosen for the skyscraper site? Was the Decemberists’ song chosen just because it had “architect” in the title, or for its lyrics? Where do Carter and Craig’s real lives end and the fictional HIMYM characters begin? You can check out Evryman retreats HERE. Mon, 10 Nov 2025 - 55 - How We Met Marshall's Calves | S2E3 "Brunch"
Season two, episode three of How We Made Your Mother takes on “Brunch,” the HIMYM episode that juggles family chaos, secrets, and spicy breakfast rolls. Josh and Craig reminisce about casting Michael Gross—yes, the dad from Family Ties—as Ted’s father, and how surreal that was for Josh, who grew up watching him on TV in Columbus, Ohio. They unpack the episode’s Pulp Fiction-style structure, Ted’s awkward family brunch with his divorced parents, Robin, and Barney, and the hilarious side plots of Marshall and Lily’s lingering chemistry (and calves). The hosts also dive into themes of communication, generational love languages, and repeating family patterns, praising Steven Lloyd’s dark humor and Christine Rose’s comedic subtlety. Barney’s needy attempts to outshine Robin, Ted’s questionable shirt choices, and the debut of the “83%” statistic all get airtime, before a touching fan letter from Mexico reflects how HIMYM continues to offer hope and comfort to viewers around the world. Mon, 03 Nov 2025 - 54 - How Marshall Met the Apocalyptic Wasteland | S2E2 "The Scorpion and the Toad"
Season two, episode two of How We Made Your Mother opens with a message from Brazil, and a story about growing up with HIMYM that sets the tone for a conversation about comfort, change, and creative courage. Josh and Craig discuss “The Scorpion and the Toad,” where Marshall tries to reenter the dating world with Barney as his wingman—only to be repeatedly sabotaged by him. They unpack the Aesop fable behind the title, Barney’s compulsive nature, and how this episode explores addiction, friendship, and moral boundaries beneath the comedy. The hosts share behind-the-scenes moments about Lily’s emotional return, Neil Patrick Harris’s magic tricks, and the infamous “smelly water” line, while praising Chris Harris’s clever wordplay and Alyson Hannigan’s acting. They touch on gender norms, Ted’s “lucky penny” bit, and Robin and Ted’s early relationship bliss before closing with Craig’s announcement of his debut novel That’s Not How It Happened and a heartfelt fan letter about how Lily’s bravery inspires creative risk-taking. Season two of How We Made Your Mother kicks off with a big announcement: the show has officially joined the Office Ladies Network, thanks to a friendship between Josh Radnor and Jenna Fischer. Josh and Craig reminisce about filming “Where Were We,” the How I Met Your Mother season two premiere, breaking down the challenge of picking up right after Ted and Robin’s rain-soaked kiss and Marshall’s heartbreak. They dig into the emotional realism of post-breakup depression, the iconic “When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead” line, and behind-the-scenes stories about George Clinton’s cameo, Robin’s gun joke, and Neil Patrick Harris’s precision physical comedy. The episode also covers the show’s evolution, season-two adjustments (including the brighter red couch), and fan questions about serialization, background actors, and hiatus memories, before closing with a touching letter from a 15-year-old fan in Germany about how HIMYM brings her hope. This week we bring you an interview that Alek did on the new podcast The Craft of Being, hosted by Anna Schumacher. The Craft of Being is a podcast via a series on conversations where we dig into what the heck even is CREATIVITY? Undefined, yet definitive. Each week we will talk to a different human about their experience of their own creativity, and how it shows up –both planned and unexpectedly– across art, work, life, and the pursuit of… well, everything. Listen and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts, including Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Follow the show @thecraftofbeing on Instagram, or email the show at thecraftofbeingpod@gmail.com. Tue, 30 Sep 2025 - 49 - Presenting: Life in Seven Songs with Guest Josh Radnor
Hello Major Fans of How We Made Your Mother and welcome to another bonus episode! We are hard at work on Season Two (which will launch soon), and we want to use this space to share some appearances of the team on other great podcasts. This week, we bring you Josh Radnor’s appearance on Life in Seven Songs. What songs tell your life story? On Life in Seven Songs, we ask this question of some of the world’s most fascinating people. Through seven songs, guests reveal the milestones—and the music—that have shaped their lives. This week, we Willkommen actor and musician Josh Radnor! Josh is best known for playing Ted Mosby on the hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother for nearly a decade. But that success came at an unexpected cost: an identity crisis that left him feeling trapped in a character he didn’t create. In this episode, Josh talks about his formative role as the MC in his high school’s production of Cabaret, his first “almost kiss” (soundtracked by Aretha Franklin), how psychedelics helped him stay centered amidst the whirlwind of fame, and the chance encounter that launched his second career as a musician in his 40s. Here are his songs. Rocky Mountain High – John Denver Respect – Aretha Franklin Willkommen – Cabaret (Joel Grey, original cast recording) “Cabaret” All I Want – Joni Mitchell Delicate – Damien Rice Tara – Dechen Shak-Dagsay Cmon – Fred Again/Brian Eno
Sun, 28 Sep 2025 - 48 - How We Made it Rain | S1E22 "Come On"
Josh and Craig close out season one revisiting “Come On,” celebrating the show’s early confidence, playful narrator tricks, and willingness to dip into magical realism—culminating in Ted’s euphoric rain dance to keep Robin from camping with Sandy Rivers as Marshall and Lily’s relationship hits a seismic crisis over her San Francisco art fellowship. They talk about cramming emotion into 22 minutes, the power of the Block Party needle‑drop “This Modern Love,” and why grand gestures (roses!) often fail while messy, heartfelt acts can work. There are shoutouts to Alexis Denisof, Amy Acker, script supervisor Janet Kagan, and the crew; a candid story about CBS urging them to be “less serialized” after season-one ratings wobbles (which they ignored and doubled down on in season two); Jordana’s tender reflection on watching Josh-as-Ted; and a fan‑letter medley about how HIMYM taught English, offered comfort, and now truly “belongs to the fans.” They tease a cool opportunity making season two “bigger and better,” thank listeners for riding along, and promise they won’t be gone long. Fri, 29 Aug 2025 - 46 - How Lily Went AWOL | S1E21 "Milk"
Josh and Craig break down S1E21 “Milk,” debating the title (they pitch better ones like “Mistakes” and “Fight or Flight”) and zeroing in on Lily’s panic about growing up: she secretly takes Marshall’s Fiero toward a San Francisco art opportunity, calls Ted from the roadside, and he chooses loyalty—ditching a matchmaker-arranged “perfect” date—to help his best friend, a Ted–Lily dynamic the guys really love. Meanwhile, Marshall sinks deeper into Barney’s corporate prank culture, and the matchmaker thread rekindles Ted’s feelings for Robin, capped by her late‑night rescue (and infamous bad highlights) that nudges Ted toward “I don’t want perfect; I want Robin.” They shout out Wendy the Waitress’s naming, crew cameos—including Carter & Craig as paramedics—and even the show’s long-game goat tease, plus production nuggets about staging the Fiero drive on a neighboring stage. The episode’s heartbeat is Lily’s “you only know it’s a mistake by making it” ethos, echoed by moving listener letters from Melbourne and Taiwan that tie the show’s themes to real life. Fri, 22 Aug 2025 - 44 - How Alek Almost Killed Alyson | S1E20 "Best Prom Ever"
In this episode of How We Made Your Mother, Josh and Craig revisit “Best Prom Ever,” which features Alek’s memorable (well, to him) cameo as Todd. They reflect on the episode’s big themes—Lily’s growing doubts, the anxiety of adult commitment, and the bittersweet grief that comes with making life choices. The conversation also includes a heartfelt listener message from Jesse, a longtime trans fan of the show, which prompts a thoughtful, honest discussion about how comedy evolves, the importance of inclusive language, and owning past mistakes. The team also unpacks behind-the-scenes stories from filming the prom sequence, shares how Scooter (David Burtka) was introduced, and celebrates the first appearance of the show’s unofficial house band, The 88. In this General Questions episode following Mary the Paralegal, Josh, Craig, and Alek explore fan-submitted questions ranging from the origins of catchphrases like “Lawyered” and the logic behind character names, to deeper themes like miscommunication and the emotional cost of avoiding vulnerability. They reflect on moments from the show that became iconic (telepathic conversations, Barney’s antics, mustache-on-TV gags), and share behind-the-scenes details like how Buzz Aldrin inspired Lily’s last name. They also dive into how assumptions, pretending, and silence shaped the story of Mary the Paralegal, and how telepathy became a comedic counterpoint to all the unspoken truths. Questions Alek asks in this episode: Who came up with “Lawyered”? Was Marshall based on your friend Noah? How did you decide on the characters’ last names? What was the original idea behind “Aldrin”? What was the inspiration for the “telepathic conversation” bit? Was the “MadTV” VHS tape on purpose? How much damage do we do when we make assumptions instead of asking the hard questions? And why is pretending always easier than being vulnerable? GET YOUR MERCH! We’ve got HWMYM merch, which is now just a FEW CLICKS AWAY. CRAIG’S BOOK IS AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER! Thu, 14 Aug 2025 - 42 - How There Was Something About Mary [with director Pam Fryman] | S1E19 "Mary the Paralegal"
This episode features the long-awaited guest appearance of director Pam Fryman, who helmed nearly every episode of How I Met Your Mother. Josh and Craig share stories of how Pam shaped the show’s tone, protected its emotional core, and created a supportive, joyful set culture that lasted nine seasons. They also look back at the episode “Mary the Paralegal,” reliving Sandy Rivers’ debut, Ted’s misguided date, and the first-ever “lawyered” and telepathy jokes. The group reflects on the challenges of shooting without a live audience, the benefits of breaking sitcom norms, and one outdated line they wouldn’t include today. The show opens and closes with moving fan letters that highlight just how deeply HIMYM continues to connect. GET YOUR MERCH! We’ve got HWMYM merch, which is now just a FEW CLICKS AWAY. Mon, 11 Aug 2025 - 41 - General Questions | S1E18 "Nothing Good Happens After 2 AM"
In this General Questions episode following Nothing Good Happens After 2 A.M., the hosts dive into the fan reactions and deeper themes behind Ted and Robin’s decisions, exploring moral ambiguity, emotional neediness, and the push-pull dynamics of late-night choices. They reflect on the enduring relevance of these situations—romantic longing, blurred boundaries, and personal regrets—and how the show’s framing device allows for layered interpretation of behavior that’s questionable but deeply human. Production details come up too, including why they didn’t shoot a costly Ashley Williams cutaway and what wedding episodes really cost. They also reflect on the end of season one, revealing how uncertain and scrappy things still felt, even after renewal. Fan Questions We Attempt to Come Close to Answering: How were the questions this week for “Nothing Good Happens After 2 A.M.”? Is Robin to blame, and was it written that way or left open to interpretation? Was there pushback about showing Ted in such a morally gray light? Do you feel the show’s narrator softens the blow of Ted’s behavior? What was the inspiration behind Victoria? How much did that wedding episode really cost? Were you excited or nervous approaching the end of season one? Is Buttercup a real bakery in New York? GET YOUR MERCH! We’ve got HWMYM merch, which is now just a FEW CLICKS AWAY. Josh and Craig dive into the season one favorite “Nothing Good Happens After 2 A.M.” and talk about ghost stories, juice excuses, and bad decisions made in the middle of the night. They break down why this episode feels more like a play than a sitcom, how Ted gets pulled in every direction (and lies to everyone), and why the moral center of the show still holds up. Josh and Craig dive into Season 1, Episode 17, “Life Among the Gorillas,” where Marshall starts to lose himself in a toxic corporate job, raising big questions about identity, money, and what it means to be a man. They talk about peer pressure in your 20s, the real cost of selling out, and how the show handled financial stress in a way most sitcoms didn’t. They also touch on the long-distance struggles of Ted and Victoria, the genius of the episode’s cliffhanger, and share stories about early mentors who helped them believe in their creative paths. Mon, 28 Jul 2025 - 38 - General Questions | S1E16 "Cupcake"
Was Victoria going to be the mother if the show was canceled early? Find out! In this General Questions episode of How We Made Your Mother, Josh, Craig, and Alek dive deeper into episode 16, “Cupcake,” prompted by listener questions. They discuss how rare and satisfying it was to see Victoria choose her career over love, a choice echoed in Robin’s character arc as well. The team explores the value of fan theories—whether or not the creators intended certain meanings—and the power of unconscious storytelling, comparing it to dream logic, color theory, and even Hemingway’s deflection of symbolism. They reflect on the permanence of small writing decisions, the difficulty of letting go of a character like Victoria, and the seduction of career compromises in your late 20s, as embodied by Marshall and Barney’s plotline. They also dig into how “Cupcake” encapsulates the series’ core themes: timing, ambition, love, and missed chances. Questions from Fans: What do you think your role is now that you can respond to years of fan theories? Is there value in correcting or affirming fan fiction and rumors? Was Victoria ever planned to be the Mother if the show was canceled after Season 1? Was it hard to let Victoria go as a character? How long did it take before you realized Marshall and Barney working together was fun? Can you describe the moment when you know a story decision is the right one? Is “Cupcake” the emotional core of the series? GET YOUR MERCH! We’ve got HWMYM merch, which is now just a FEW CLICKS AWAY. CRAIG’S BOOK IS AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER! Thu, 24 Jul 2025 - 37 - How We Sat on a Cake | S1E16 "Cupcake"
In this episode of How We Made Your Mother, Josh and Craig revisit “Cupcake” (Season 1, Episode 16), reflecting on the pivotal crossroads for Ted and Victoria as she prepares to leave for Germany. They praise Ashley Williams’s performance and discuss the episode’s unique structure—showing the same day from both characters’ perspectives. The conversation dives into how HIMYM grapples with adult issues like money, long-distance relationships, and self-identity in your 20s, highlighting the show’s emotional honesty beneath its humor. They explore Barney’s manipulative but needy attempts to recruit Marshall to the “dark side,” Lily’s cake-sitting disaster, and the subtle foreshadowing of relationship trouble through visual metaphors like ill-fitting suits and wedding dresses. A recurring theme is the tension between “I” and “we” in young relationships, with insight from a clinical psychologist (and Josh’s wife) about emotional development and timing. They end with a heartfelt listener letter about how HIMYM led one fan to the love of his life—and the perfect yellow umbrella. GET YOUR MERCH! Mon, 21 Jul 2025 - 36 - General Questions | S1E15 "Game Night"
In this General Questions episode, the team brings back Chris Harris (writer of the HIMYM episode “Game Night”) to answer fan questions and explore deeper elements of storytelling from the early seasons. They discuss how HIMYM balanced large, event-style episodes with character development, whether Chris was intentionally given “scope” episodes like “Subway Wars,” and how character traits (like Marshall’s love of games) were assigned in the show’s early, more flexible days. They touch on the importance of continuity in a serialized sitcom, the organic nature of callbacks, and the evolving creative relationships between writers, actors, and the broader crew. They also reminisce about fan theories, including a popular one about who left Robin the welcome mat, and offer a behind-the-scenes look at the collaborative dynamics that shaped HIMYM’s signature tone and complexity. Questions From Fans: Can you talk about putting together the scope versus the character? How did you decide how many episodes you and Carter would write and how many you would give away? Were you planning ahead for continuity details, like Barney mentioning the Peace Corps before his backstory was revealed? What was the inspiration for Marshall’s love of making board games? Was that knowingly a character trait you were building? In the writers’ room, how did continuity work? Was it a hive mind, or did someone “own” the show’s memory? Who gave Robin the welcome mat—Ted or Barney? (posed via fan questions) GET YOUR MERCH! We’ve got HWMYM merch, which is now just a FEW CLICKS AWAY. CRAIG’S BOOK IS AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER! Thu, 17 Jul 2025 - 35 - How We Met Your Vader [with Chris Harris] | S1E15 "Game Night"
In this episode of How We Made Your Mother, Josh and Craig are joined by writer Chris Harris to reflect on the making of Season 1, Episode 15: “Game Night.” The trio breaks down the episode’s structure, the origin of Barney’s backstory, and how the writers constructed a compelling present-day story to balance the flashbacks. They talk about the decision to reveal Barney’s past as a heartbroken hippie and the challenges of maintaining both comedic pacing and emotional depth. Chris shares memories from the writers’ room, including how “Marshgammon” came to life, legal hurdles around parodying Monopoly, and Neil Patrick Harris’s incredible physical comedy (even while sick). They also discuss HIMYM’s early use of narrative flexibility—flashbacks, unreliable memory, evolving tone—which laid the groundwork for later storytelling innovations. A fan letter from the Faroe Islands brings the conversation full circle, reminding them how the show continues to offer comfort and connection to viewers around the world. Mon, 14 Jul 2025 - 34 - How We Met More Ashley Williams | S1E14 "Zip, Zip, Zip"
In Part 2 of their conversation with Ashley Williams, the How We Made Your Mother team explores the legacy of the episode “Zip, Zip, Zip” while also reflecting on its tonal whiplash following the romantic “Drumroll, Please.” Ashley, Josh, and Craig discuss the writers’ room debate about couples’ bathroom practices, what it’s like to shift from lead storyline to comic side note, and how multi-cam shows use genre to balance intimacy and laughs. Ashley shares touching and hilarious stories about her relationship with her husband Neil—including Snickers-fueled declarations of love. The group also breaks down favorite “Zip, Zip, Zip” moments (like Robin and Barney’s first spark and the sad return of “What’s taking so long?” girl), and consider the challenges of protecting characters’ emotional dignity across episodes. The show ends with a love letter from a fan named Emily, who may have met her Ted at the Bowery Ballroom fundraiser. GET YOUR MERCH! We’ve got HWMYM merch, which is now just a FEW CLICKS AWAY. Thu, 10 Jul 2025 - 33 - How We Met Ashley Williams | S1E14 "Zip, Zip, Zip"
In this heartfelt and often hilarious episode of How We Made Your Mother, Josh Radnor and Craig Thomas welcome Ashley Williams—beloved for her role as Victoria—for an in-depth conversation that’s as much about How I Met Your Mother as it is about surviving (and thriving) in the world of multi-cam sitcoms. They reflect on the intimacy and cinematic tone of “Drumroll, Please,” the silliness of “Zip, Zip, Zip,” and the powerful creative safety net provided by director Pam Fryman. Ashley opens up about her early industry struggles, hard lips during on-screen kisses, and the healing experience of joining the HIMYM cast. The trio explore actor insecurities, audition stories, set dynamics, and why the show’s environment was unlike anything else on TV. Bonus: a surprise appearance by Ashley’s tap-dancing husband Neil, a conversation about kissing technique, and some deep theater-kid camaraderie. GET YOUR MERCH! Mon, 30 Jun 2025 - 31 - How We Almost | S1E13 "Drumroll, Please"
In this episode of How We Made Your Mother, Josh and Craig revisit the deeply romantic Season 1 quasi-two-parter culminating in “Drumroll, Please,” where Ted meets Victoria at a wedding and chooses connection over logistics. They unpack how the structure mirrors “The Pineapple Incident,” praise the chemistry between Josh and Ashley Williams, and reflect on how the episode balances whimsical rom-com structure with emotional realism. They explore Ted’s romantic resilience, Robin’s surprise vulnerability, and the subtle heartbreak and sweetness of not kissing. The hosts also discuss rom-com mythmaking, garment metaphors, and HIMYM’s layered mysteries, while listener messages highlight the show’s global emotional impact—including as a way to learn English. A SPECIAL GUEST makes a surprise cameo with a cheeky question, and Craig reveals that Victoria’s “thank God” moment remains one of his favorite endings. Mon, 23 Jun 2025 - 30 - General Questions | S1E12 "The Wedding"
In this bonus “General Questions” episode of How We Made Your Mother, Josh, Craig, and Alek reflect on the Season 1 episode “The Wedding,” especially the lasting impact of Ashley Williams as Victoria, even with just seconds of screen time. They explore why her character resonated so deeply, whether she was ever considered to be the mother if the show had ended early, and how the timing of her reveal was crafted to feel mythic and cinematic. They talk about writing under the pressure of a midseason pickup, the significance of Victoria’s entrance, and the show’s deeper themes of trust, surrender, and the idea that life unfolds with unseen magic. The episode also touches on fan interest in “Who’s the mother?” and how the show was structured around anticipation, not instant gratification. Questions asked during the episode: Did Craig and Carter always plan to bring Victoria back, or was it due to audience love? How did the writers gauge audience reaction in a pre-social media world? Were you ready for Victoria to be the mother if the show was canceled after 13 episodes? Did Josh do a chemistry read with Ashley Williams? They explore themes of memory, self-sabotage, and how the show captures both heartbreak and hope. The conversation covers Ted’s romantic logic, the reveal that he didn’t actually check “plus one,” and how this episode sets up the next with the introduction of Victoria. They also highlight Sue Fetterman’s editing, the odd sudden closeness of Stuart and Claudia, and how weddings stir up emotions and expectations. Mon, 16 Jun 2025 - 28 - General Questions | S1E11 "The Limo"
In this bonus “General Questions” episode of How We Made Your Mother, Josh, Craig, and Alek reflect on gender dynamics in How I Met Your Mother, prompted by a listener who studied “The Limo” episode in an English class on 2000s sitcoms. They explore the show’s gender role reversals, Barney’s objectification of women (and how it was meant to be satirical), and the tension between authorial intent and fan interpretation. They also dive into the legacy and construction of Barney’s iconic Get Psyched mix (including whether a prop list or fan reconstructions are accurate), share their own personal “get psyched” songs and albums (with love for The Joshua Tree and Born in the USA), and talk about how Ted’s idealized New Year’s Eve reflects his need for control—and the broader theme of learning to dance with the universe. Along the way, they reminisce about Wesleyan, Ricky Gervais, Springsteen, and Sam Malone, wrapping with shout-outs to eagle-eyed HIMYM fans and an impromptu Airbnb ad. Fan Questions Asked: What class were you studying “The Limo” in, and why that episode? Did you and Carter write the full Get Psyched mix, or was it the props team? What songs are on your personal Get Psyched mix? Was “The Limo” episode satirizing New Year’s Eve pressure, or about Ted’s need for control? GET YOUR MERCH! Thu, 12 Jun 2025 - 27 - How That Wasn't Moby | S1E11 "The Limo"
Josh and Craig reflect on How I Met Your Mother’s Season 1 episode “The Limo,” a fan-favorite New Year’s Eve story that they and many fans—including Andrea from Mexico—consider emblematic of the show’s emotional core. They recall the episode’s ambition to be a “simple shoot” that turned out to be one of the most technically challenging due to the cramped limo set, and share behind-the-scenes stories like Jason Segel’s triumphant foggy entrance, the difficulty of getting camera shots in the limo, and the running joke of “the circuits are jammed.” They marvel at the Emmy-winning cinematography, the comic perfection of Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love a Bad Name,” and how the episode balances magical realism with emotional honesty. Mon, 09 Jun 2025 - 26 - General Questions | S1E10 "The Pineapple Incident"
In this bonus “General Questions” episode of How We Made Your Mother, Josh Radnor, Craig Thomas, and Alek Lev dive into fan-submitted questions about “The Pineapple Incident,” covering everything from the origin of the pineapple (a mysterious “alien fruit”) to the challenges of shooting nonlinear narratives. They reminisce about the kind, collaborative atmosphere on set, the influences behind HIMYM’s story structure (like Rashomon and Memento), and how props like the yellow umbrella and blue French horn have become iconic fan symbols. The episode also includes some vacation banter, and a heartfelt discussion about gratitude, presence, and the legacy of the show. Questions We Attempt to Answer: Why a pineapple? Has the pineapple changed your lives forever? Were you inspired by any fictional work or did it come from any real life event? Can you walk us through the order of the shooting? How do you plan shooting so many scenes that need to come together to form a timeline that makes sense? GET YOUR MERCH! We’ve got HWMYM merch, which is now just a FEW CLICKS AWAY. Thu, 05 Jun 2025 - 25 - How We Chose a Pineapple [with co-creator Carter Bays] | S1E10 "The Pineapple Incident"
Josh and Craig are joined by series co-creator Carter Bays to revisit “The Pineapple Incident,” one of How I Met Your Mother’s most beloved early episodes. They share how the idea—originally called “Drunken Fiasco”—was one of the first ever pitched for the show, long before the writers’ room formed. The trio reflect on the power of mystery in storytelling, how the episode helped define the show’s voice, and why they ultimately prefer the pineapple to remain unexplained. Carter does reveal, however, the real-life inspiration for the “vomit-free since ’93” line. With detours into fan tattoos, early network notes, and the joy of letting go creatively, the episode ends with a moving letter from a listener in Australia whose connection to the show helped her navigate grief and believe in love. Mon, 02 Jun 2025 - 24 - General Questions | S1E9 "Belly Full of Turkey"
In this bonus episode of How We Made Your Mother, Josh and Craig return to episode 9, “Belly Full of Turkey,” to answer listener questions, share new behind-the-scenes stories, and read exclusive commentary from writer Chris Miller. They dive into the magic of set construction, the evolution of Marshall’s Minnesota roots, last-minute casting shake-ups (including how Bill Fagerbakke became Marshall’s dad), and the contributions of the beloved stand-ins. Josh also shares heartfelt stories from his recent music tour, including fans flying in from across the world. It’s a fast-moving, funny, and emotional look at the people who helped shape one of the show’s most memorable episodes. How many sets were in this episode, and how were they managed? What inspired Marshall’s love of Minnesota and the Vikings? Did Jason Segel enjoy the Minnesota scenes? What was it like working with Bill Fagerbakke as Marshall’s dad? Was another actor originally cast in that role? Who were the stand-ins, and what did they contribute to the show? Have any of you ever been arrested for public urination? What was in the Thanks-tini? Was the seven-layer salad based on a real recipe? How did you cast such tall actors for Marshall’s family? What’s the story behind the acoustic “Mr. Roboto” cover that didn’t make it in? Can you talk about the music selection and supervision process on HIMYM? GET YOUR MERCH! We’ve got HWMYM merch, which is now just a FEW CLICKS AWAY. CRAIG’S BOOK IS AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER!
