- 110 - India's General Elections 2024: What Drives Modi's Appeal?
In a recent discussion hosted by Raza Rumi, renowned commentator and host, Dr. Manish Dabhade, an academic at Jawaharlal Nehru University, and an expert in diplomacy and international relations, shed light on the factors driving Narendra Modi's popularity and potential return as Prime Minister of India. Narendra Modi's popularity is driven by his track record and promises outlined in the BJP manifesto, focusing on issues like agriculture, infrastructure, and financial inclusion. Modi's governance is perceived as free of corruption, which resonates with voters. Additionally, his proactive approach against corruption garners support. Some experts believe identity politics is gradually losing significance as governance and development take center stage. In terms of foreign policy, Modi aims to position India as a global leader while balancing partnerships with the US and Russia. However, issues with Pakistan remain unresolved due to entrenched positions on both sides, despite occasional diplomatic gestures. #Indianelection2024 #india #narendramodi #bjp #newwaveglobal
Thu, 25 Apr 2024 - 22min - 109 - U.S. Economy Slows | Bitcoin Seen as Risky | Inflation and Global Crisis Worry Voters
Host Nauraiz Rana is in conversation with Steve Hanke, an American economist and professor of applied economics at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. The U.S. economy is experiencing a slowdown, raising concerns about a potential recession. Since March 2022, the money supply has dropped by 3.2%, an unusual decline for the U.S. The Federal Reserve's tightening measures could impact the money supply and the path toward recession. As the U.S. approaches an election year, government spending typically increases. However, the Federal Reserve may hold back on aggressive monetary actions despite the growing fiscal deficit. U.S. support for wars in Ukraine and Gaza is focal aspect. Inflation has risen since President Biden took office, affecting voters' views. The administration may increase antitrust policies and protectionism ahead of the elections. Bitcoin is seen as a high-risk, speculative asset, while gold remains a stable, longstanding currency. Pakistan faces political and economic instability following recent elections and the imprisonment of Imran Khan. Economist Professor Hanke supports Khan's economic reform ideas, which could improve Pakistan's economy if enacted. #newwaveglobal #economy #usa #pakistan #pti #imrankhan #stevehanke #appliedeconomics

Tue, 16 Apr 2024 - 30min - 104 - CBC Says Pakistan and India Interfered in Canadian Elections, Needs Investigation
Raza Rumi discusses a story reported by CBC, focusing on foreign interference in Canadian elections by Pakistan and India. According to documents from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), both countries targeted the 2019 and 2021 elections. In 2019, Pakistani officials in Canada attempted to influence Canadian politics, while in 2021, the Indian government allegedly conducted interference activities in specific electoral districts. These allegations include providing illegal financing support to pro-Indian candidates. The reports caution that the information may be uncorroborated or incomplete, and further investigation is required. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau acknowledged the issue, stating that Canada has taken significant measures to counter foreign interference. While Pakistan's interference aims to promote its interests and counter India's influence, India's alleged actions targeted writings with Indo-Canadian voters sympathetic to the Khalistani movement. The Khalistan movement advocates for an independent Sikh nation in Punjab, India, and is viewed differently by India and Pakistan. CSIS suggests that India used a network of contacts, including politicians and media personalities, to monitor individuals of interest in Canada. Despite concerns raised by CSIS, none of the activities met the threshold for criminal investigations. #newwaveglobal #pakistan #india #canada #politics #modi #justintrudeau

Shaista urges British Pakistanis to reassess their political affiliations and support parties aligned with their values. The conversation delves into the role of the British media in shaping perceptions of various issues. Shaista criticizes the lack of nuanced reporting and the media's failure to address certain historical contexts. She highlights a need for more balanced coverage and representation. Tue, 16 Apr 2024 - 28min - 102 - Israel Acts on Iran's Threats | Escalation Risks Global Conflict, Affects Oil Prices, Economy
Host Misbah Azam is in conversation with Awais Saleem and Fauzia Yazdani to discuss the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, its potential global implications, and its impact on oil prices and Pakistan's economy. After years of making aggressive statements, Israel has finally taken action against Iran, as they had always threatened to do. Iran, in turn, has vowed to respond with whatever means available. The situation could escalate beyond Iranian and Israeli borders, potentially involving the United States and other allies. The ongoing conflict could have global ramifications, impacting oil prices and economies, including Pakistan's. The recent secret meeting of the SIFC, if it indeed occurred, might aim to address such issues, including potential oil price hikes. However, reliance on a single partner like China may not be a sustainable solution for Pakistan's economic challenges. The conversation also touches upon the potential for trade with India, with differing opinions on its impact on local industries. #newwaveglobal #iran #israel #china #pakistan #irannews #global
Tue, 16 Apr 2024 - 23min - 101 - Muslim-American Voters in America Are Hurt and Devastated | 2024 US Elections | Trump vs. Biden
World Bank economist Nauraiz Rana sits down with Ahmad Faruqi, an economist, defense analyst, and political columnist who regularly contributes to the Friday Times. Faruqi vividly portrays the grim reality of Gaza's dire situation during the ongoing conflict. Israel's continuous assaults have caused widespread destruction, demolishing buildings, and flooding tunnels with salt water. This has worsened the suffering of civilians, who now face hunger, thirst, and disease amidst the devastation. Despite condemnation from the international community, particularly within the UN, the US unwavering support for Israel draws criticism. This is evident through its repeated vetoing of resolutions in the UN Security Council and abstention from others. The political fallout of the conflict, particularly within the Democratic Party in the United States, is closely examined. President Biden's handling of the crisis could significantly affect his electoral prospects, especially among younger voters who prioritize humanitarian concerns and criticize US support for Israel. Recent UN Security Council resolutions aimed at addressing the conflict have been disregarded by both the US and Israel. Faruqi also points out the imbalance in military power between Israel and Palestine and questions Palestine's statehood without adequate defense mechanisms. There are calls to disarm Israel to achieve a fair solution, but acknowledgment is made of powerful lobbying groups, like the pro-Israel lobby in the US, which pose significant obstacles to such measures. In the US political landscape, concerns arise about the limited options for voters beyond Biden and Trump, especially considering Trump's pro-Israel stance and anti-Muslim rhetoric. This prompts contemplation among Muslim Americans about their electoral choices amidst the crisis. #newwaveglobal #gaza #israel #palestine #usa #trump #biden #elections

This shelter provides refuge and support for displaced South Asian Muslim women, addressing critical issues such as domestic violence, language barriers, and immigration challenges. Moreover, Nusrat's dedication to education is evident in her efforts to preserve and promote Urdu language and culture among Pakistani-American youth. Despite facing initial resistance and skepticism, she successfully initiated Urdu language programs in public schools, fostering cultural understanding and identity among younger generations. Mr. Tarar emphasizes differences in foreign policy between Trump and Biden, highlighting Trump's tenure as relatively conflict-free compared to Biden's. Tarer critiques Biden's handling of international conflicts such as those in the Red Sea and Gaza, expressing concerns about immigration issues and crime rates under Biden's administration. Thu, 28 Mar 2024 - 19min - 97 - Palestine Crisis | Security Council Failures | Exposing Israel's Hidden Motive | Demanding UN Reform
Host Raza Rumi engages in conversation with Munir Akram, a highly esteemed diplomat with a wealth of experience across various roles, presently serving as Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations. In light of the ongoing crisis gripping the world, there is a deep-seated concern among compassionate individuals regarding the severe hardships endured by the Palestinian people at the hands of the Israeli state. The pivotal question arises: why has the Security Council failed to intervene in this egregious violation of human rights? The existing veto power wielded by the Council's permanent members renders it ineffective and unrepresentative of the broader UN membership. Is it time to expand the Council's membership? And should the veto power, which often leads to paralysis, be reconsidered? The current Israeli government comprises cabinet members who are staunch advocates of the displacement of Palestinians and the expansion of Israel's territory. Even if a resolution were to be passed by the Security Council, compelling the Israeli government to comply would pose a formidable challenge, presenting a dual dilemma. #newwaveglobal #gaza #palestine #israel #munirakram #unitednations #securitycouncil #unitedstates #usa #russia #israel #china #france #uk #unitedkingdom

Tue, 06 Feb 2024 - 08min - 84 - Arab and Muslim American Voters Disillusioned with Biden's Stance on Gaza
There is growing dissatisfaction among Arab and Muslim American voters, particularly in Michigan, with President Joe Biden's stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Community leaders have opted to cancel a scheduled meeting with Biden's campaign, citing his perceived failure to address Israel's actions in Gaza. This decision reflects a significant shift in sentiment, as these communities have historically supported the Democratic Party. The potential electoral ramifications of this disillusionment, particularly in swing states like Michigan, where Arab and Muslim American voters could play a decisive role. Biden's declining support among these demographics poses a challenge to his reelection bid, as evidenced by recent polls suggesting that a significant portion of Arab and Muslim American voters may not support him in 2024. Moreover, Biden's handling of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has sparked criticism from both within his administration and the wider community, with calls for a more assertive stance on issues such as ceasefire and humanitarian concerns. Failure to address these grievances could not only jeopardize Biden's reelection prospects but also undermine US credibility and influence in the region. #newwaveglobal #biden #usa #elections2024 #arab #muslim #diaspora
Tue, 30 Jan 2024 - 07min - 83 - Why Iran Attacked Pakistan? And Pakistan Responded With Strikes| What Is Jaish al-Adl?
Host Misbah Azam is joined by Mr. Shuja Nawaz, a distinguished expert known for his extensive work on the Pakistan Army and Pakistan's political dynamics. The discussion delves into the recent events on the Iran-Pakistan border, seeking Mr. Nawaz's analysis of the motivations behind the cross-border attack and Pakistan's subsequent response. Mr. Nawaz suggests that there appears to be a division within Iran, particularly within the Revolutionary Guard, regarding the decision to launch an attack on the group Jaish al-Adl . This group is perceived as a successor to Jundullah, which had previously been associated with attacks in Iran and alleged covert U.S. support. He also critically examines Iran's justification for not informing Pakistan beforehand, questioning the validity of time constraints as a satisfactory reason for the lack of communication between the two nations. #newwaveglobal #iran #pakistan #pakistaniranborder

Tue, 30 Jan 2024 - 36min - 80 - Member of Palestinian Legislative Council on ICJ Ruling, Aid Suspension, and Global Solidarity
In the interview, Rabia Mehmood engages in a discussion with Dr. Mustafa Barghouti, a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, focusing on various critical aspects concerning the Palestinian cause. They begin by examining the implications of the International Court of Justice's preliminary ruling on the genocide case. Dr. Barghouti offers insights into the significance of this ruling as a symbolic victory for Palestinians, despite some reservations about its specifics. They explore how the ruling has been received, acknowledging both positive interpretations and criticisms regarding its effectiveness in addressing the ongoing conflict. Transitioning to the suspension of aid to UNRWA by several countries, including the United States and Canada, Mehmood and Dr. Barghouti dissect the ramifications of this decision. Dr. Barghouti passionately condemns the move, emphasizing its adverse effects on Palestinian civilians and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. They discuss the concerning trend of punishing victims instead of holding Israel accountable for its actions. The focus shifts to the role of allies and the global solidarity movement. Dr. Barghouti underscores the importance of support from nations like South Africa and Pakistan while advocating for more substantial action from Arab and Muslim countries to challenge Israel's oppressive measures. They reflect on the growing international solidarity with Palestine and stress the need for concrete actions, such as implementing sanctions, to address the ongoing injustice. #newwaveglobal #israel #gaza #palestine #icj #icc #unitednations #unrwa
Tue, 30 Jan 2024 - 19min - 79 - Israel, US & Allies are committing Genocide in Palestine: US Human Rights Expert
In this segment, host Rabia Mehmood engages with Professor Francis Boyle, an acclaimed international law expert, and a Professor of International Law at the University of Illinois College of Law. He is renowned for his pioneering work in applying the genocide convention to legal cases. With experience representing entities like Bosnia-Herzegovina and the Palestinian Authority, Boyle's expertise and advocacy for human rights make him a prominent figure in the field. They discuss the recent interim ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding the case of South Africa versus Israel, focusing on allegations of genocide in Palestine. The ICJ's ruling called for provisional measures and suggested a plausible risk of genocide by Israel in Palestine. Despite this, the ruling fell short of an immediate ceasefire, leading to disappointment among Palestinians as bombings continued. Professor Boyle explains the technicalities of the ICJ's ruling, interpreting it as a de facto call for a ceasefire due to the cessation of certain acts by Israel. He suggests that Pakistan could pursue legal action against Israel for genocide at the ICJ, emphasizing the court's role in addressing such issues. The conversation also highlights the complicity of certain countries, such as the United States, Canada, and the UK, in supporting Israel financially and politically. These countries are accused of aiding and abetting Israel's actions, potentially making them complicit in genocide under international law. Furthermore, the suspension of funding to the UN agency UNRWA, supporting Palestinians is discussed. Professor Boyle criticizes this move, labeling it an act of genocide due to its impact on the Palestinian population's access to essential resources. The conversation also addresses the International Criminal Court's (ICC) role in the Palestinian issue. Professor Boyle expresses disappointment in the ICC's inaction since 2009 despite Palestine's acceptance of its jurisdiction. Lastly, the conversation touches on a lawsuit in the US accusing President Biden of complicity in genocide against Palestinians. Professor Bo supports the lawsuit, highlighting its significance despite potential challenges in the US federal judiciary system. #newwaveglobal #israel #gaza #palestine #unitednations #icc #internationalcourtofjustice

Exploring the obstacles faced by protesters, such as the confiscation of sound systems and police-imposed restrictions, the discussion highlights the disparate treatment of activist groups and questions the authorities' use of force and patronizing demeanor. Khan also sheds light on the dismissive approach of the caretaker government, as ministers' condescending remarks and reluctance to acknowledge their lack of control over issues like enforced disappearances are revealed. The conversation takes a controversial turn, raising doubts about the justice behind the activists' struggle and contemplating the necessity of their rebellion for human rights. Despite the challenges, the unwavering commitment of the activists to their just cause is emphasized, urging heightened attention to events in Islamabad. #newwaveglobal #balochistan #baloch #islamabad #activism

Fri, 19 Jan 2024 - 10min - 72 - Challenges to Free Speech and Liberal Values in US Universities: Recent Concerns
On November 10, Columbia University suspended two student groups that organized multiple demonstrations in response to the Israel-Hamas war. The University denied funding and official recognition of the groups Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) after a joint walkout and “peaceful protest art installation,” which Columbia’s Chair of the Special Committee on Campus Safety said included unspecified “threatening rhetoric and intimidation.” This was the third event that JVP and SJP organized following Hamas’s terrorist attack on Israel on October 7. Just as with the previous two events, Columbia officials restricted area access to Columbia ID holders in advance, a move one student described as “a tactic, in my opinion, to scare people from organizing and keeping things silent.” Columbia University was neither the first nor the only higher education institution to ban Students for Justice in Palestine from its campus. Brandeis University revoked official support for the organization on November 8, two days before Columbia. Critical students and university officials on campuses where chapters of the national organization reside have expressed concern that it proliferates antisemitism and spreads hate. Seven people, three of them Brandeis students, were arrested while protesting the university’s decision to ban SJP. Protesters faced charges including disorderly conduct, unlawful assembly, and assault and battery on a police officer. Dozens of students staged a walk-out assembly the following week, where they described police violence preceding the arrests, such as officers choking students and pinning them down with knees on their backs. Suspensions of SJP also followed at George Washington University and the State University System of Florida, which accused the organization of supporting Hamas. The local chapter of SJP alongside the American Civil Liberties Union and Palestine Legal filed a federal lawsuit against Gov. Ron DeSantis and other Florida officials, arguing they gave no basis for the “material support” for terrorism allegations. There have been numerous instances across U.S. education of freedom of expression stifled by harassment, institutional action, or the threat of violence. The Brandeis Center and Jewish Americans for Fairness in Education groups are taking legal action against the University of California System, UC Berkley, and its leaders for unchecked antisemitism, which they say has led to a spread of violence and harassment. According to attorney and co-founder of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression Harvey Silvergate, “Universities should have no political positions whatsoever. … It is not their job to keep the peace by shutting up one side. It is their job to keep the peace and allow a forum for free expression,” Silverglate further said of Harvard, “The job of a university is to provide a safe environment where students can speak, and students can listen.” #humanrights #gaza #israel #usuniversities #harvarduniversity #claudinegay #newwaveglobal

Currently incarcerated, Khan highlights the constitutional illegitimacy of caretaker administrations at various levels of government and the skepticism surrounding the promised February 8th elections, particularly in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He points to the questionable actions of the election commission, emphasizing its defiance of the Supreme Court and hindrance of his party's democratic processes. Khan attributes his removal to the establishment's interference, influenced by American pressure. Amid economic challenges and personal persecution, he calls for fair elections as the only path to political stability and democratic governance in Pakistan.

Continuing the tragic narrative of Palestine, marked by indiscriminate killings by Israel and grave human rights violations, thousands, including children, professionals, and humanitarian workers, are losing their lives. Shockingly, there is also a systematic and deliberate targeting of journalists. A statement from the Community to Protect Journalists emphasizes the unparalleled nature of the targeting of journalists and their families in Gaza, with the number of cases surpassing 100. #newwaveglobal #gaza #israel #palestine

Host Misbah Azam is joined by Kamran Bokhari, Senior Director at New Lines Institute to discuss the evolving situation in the Middle East. While many are fixated on the conflict in the Gaza Strip, a more expansive war is underway. Iran is strategically leveraging the Gaza situation to exert pressure on the United States and enhance its standing in the region. This broader conflict spans Iran's borders with Iraq, through Syria and Lebanon, all the way to the eastern Mediterranean coast, establishing a continuous sphere of influence. Over the past 15 years, Iranians have established a significant presence in the southern part of Saudi Arabia through their alliance with the Houthis in Yemen. This development has allowed Iran to further its power agenda and position itself as a key player in regional security. #newwaveglobal #iran #middleeast

Sat, 30 Dec 2023 - 07min - 66 - Challenges and Deficiencies: A Critical Examination of Pakistan's Economic Landscape in 2023
Nauraiz Rana, an economist at the World Bank, is accompanied by Dr. Nadeem ul Haque, a Senior Economist and former Deputy Chairman at the Planning Commission of Pakistan, and Trade Policy Advisor to the Minister of Commerce, with a background of 22 years at the IMF. The year 2023 proved to be exceptionally challenging for Pakistan's economy, marking one of the most difficult periods in recent memory. The nation persists in grappling with these chronic challenges, engaging in a continuous dialogue with both multilateral institutions and bilateral allies. Within the government, a notable absence of technical expertise is evident. The lack of economists, power engineers, railway experts, and cost-benefit analysts is indicative of a broken system. The entire government structure remains outdated, with no efforts made to modernize laws. The civil service, inherited and unchanged, lacks technical proficiency and consists of individuals ill-equipped to navigate the complexities of the modern world. The judicial system mirrors this antiquated structure, relying on arbitrary laws that are far from modern standards. Originally designed for extraction and appropriation during the colonial era, this system persists, with the local judiciary, bureaucracy, and the army now exercising extractive powers, aiming to retain financial gains for themselves. Consequently, local initiative is stifled, and there is a prevailing distrust in market mechanisms, as they are perceived to crush local entrepreneurial endeavors. #pakistaneconomycrisis #globalrecession #newwaveglobal
Sat, 30 Dec 2023 - 37min - 65 - Trump Barred: Colorado Court Ruling Sparks Legal Clash
The Colorado Supreme Court has disqualified Donald Trump from the state's Republican presidential primary, marking the first use of the rarely invoked insurrection clause in Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. The clause prohibits individuals engaged in insurrection from holding office, a provision legal scholars argue applies to Trump's actions in attempting to overturn the 2020 election. Initiated by Colorado voters, the case focused on Trump's role in the January 6 Capitol attack. The ruling, impacting only the state's Republican primary on March 5, may extend to the general election and influence similar cases in other states. Trump's legal team plans to appeal, asserting the 14th Amendment doesn't apply to the presidency, and courts lack authority to remove him from the ballot. #newwaveglobal #donaldtrump #usa

As elections loom, political tensions and other priorities overshadow urgent environmental action, emphasizing the challenge of balancing economic recovery and sustainability. #lahore #smog #pakistan #newwaveglobal
Wed, 27 Dec 2023 - 10min - 63 - Censorship by Facebook| Meta Content Moderation Policies Under Fire| Human Rights Watch
Raza Rumi discusses Meta's content moderation policies in the context of the Israel-Palestine conflict. In a comprehensive report released by Human Rights Watch (HRW), Meta, the parent company of popular social media platforms Facebook and Instagram, faces scrutiny over its content moderation policies, specifically in the context of the Israel-Palestine conflict. The findings, based on extensive research and data analysis, reveal a complex web of challenges that impact user freedoms and demand urgent attention. One of the key concerns highlighted in the HRW report is the lack of transparency surrounding government requests for content removal. Meta, in compliance with its Community Standards and local laws, regularly takes down content. However, the report points out that a substantial amount of content removal is prompted by "voluntary" requests from governments. These requests, often originating from non-judicial bodies like law enforcement authorities, sidestep legal procedures and lack the transparency and accountability inherent in legal processes. The report singles out the Israeli government's proactive approach to seeking content removal from social media platforms. The Israeli Cyber Unit, operating within the State Attorney’s Office, consistently issues "voluntary" removal requests to Meta. Notably, compliance rates with these requests have been consistently high, reaching 92% in 2018. In 2021, the Cyber Unit issued 5,990 removal or restriction requests to Meta platforms, with an 82% compliance rate. Recent data, as of November 14, 2023, indicates a surge in content takedown requests related to the Israel-Palestine hostilities. The prosecutor’s office reportedly sent 9,500 content removal requests to major social media platforms, with nearly 60% directed at Meta. Despite the considerable volume of requests, there is a lack of transparency regarding the specific policies violated and the outcomes of these requests. Automation emerges as a significant factor contributing to the challenges outlined in the report. Meta heavily relies on automated tools for content moderation, with over 90% of content deemed violative being proactively detected by these tools. However, the report underscores the limitations of automation in understanding contextual factors, leading to the removal of non-violative content. Users reported instances where their peaceful comments on the Israel-Palestine conflict were erroneously flagged and removed. The human rights implications of content censorship, especially in the Palestine context, are a focal point of the report. Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) guarantees the right to freedom of expression, which extends to online spaces. The report argues that unduly restricting or suppressing peaceful content supporting Palestine infringes on this fundamental right. Content restrictions and "shadow banning," where a user’s content becomes less visible without explanation, are flagged as particularly distressing for users. The report notes that Meta does not formally acknowledge the practice of shadow banning, leaving users in the dark and without adequate access to complaint mechanisms and remedies. HRW's report concludes with a series of recommendations for Meta, urging an overhaul of the Dangerous Organizations and Individuals (DOI) policy, increased transparency on government requests, improved automation transparency, and enhanced access to remedies for users facing content removal. The report underscores the responsibility of social media companies to align their content moderation policies with international human rights standards, ensuring a more transparent, accountable, and rights-respecting digital space. #humanrightswatch #metaverse #facebook #shadowbanned #newwaveglobal
Wed, 27 Dec 2023 - 11min - 62 - Crisis on theHorizon: An Examination of Economic Trends and Forecasts for 2024
Renowned economists Steve Haney and Harry Dent are asserting that the upcoming year, 2024, will be marked by a substantial and imminent mega-recession, particularly impacting the United States. The preceding three to four years have been notably tumultuous for both the U.S. and the global economy. During this period, the M2 money supply skyrocketed to a historic high of 26.2%, a move initiated by the U.S. Administration, leading to significant inflationary pressures. In reviewing the economic performance of the United States in 2023 and offering projections for 2024, Nauraiz Rana, an economist with the World Bank, acknowledges that the policies formulated to address the economic fallout of the 2020 and onward COVID-19 pandemic have played a defining role in shaping recent economic trends. The pandemic triggered permanent closures of businesses across various scales, disrupting supply chains and altering the customary flow of the private sector. Looking ahead to 2024, the economic landscape becomes a critical factor in the upcoming elections, as economic performance traditionally influences voter sentiment. Additionally, the potential contraction of the U.S. economy may have ripple effects on the global South, affecting international trade and development aid. #newwaveglobal #usa #economy #2024

It is disheartening to witness a stark contrast where the advocacy for free speech is now met with brutal censorship. #newwaveglobal #israelpalestineconflict #gaza
Wed, 27 Dec 2023 - 35min - 59 - Navigating Economic Waters: A 2023 Reflection and Forecast with Steve Hanke
Steve Hanke, an American economist and professor of applied economics at Johns Hopkins University, engages in a discussion with Nauraiz Rana regarding the economic performance of the United States as the year 2023 draws to a close. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. economy has been navigating challenging circumstances. Notably, as the largest economy globally and the second-largest contributor to global trade after China, any developments in the U.S. have a significant cascading effect on other nations. The private sector bore a substantial impact, witnessing layoffs and disruptions in the supply chain. Monthly assessments of economic confidence by Gallup consistently revealed a lack of confidence among the populace. In response to these challenges, the U.S. government implemented various policy measures. Initially, there was a substantial increase in the money supply, M2, reaching an all-time high of 26.2% in 2021. This surge in money supply led to a 40-year high in inflation, a prediction accurately foreseen by Steve Hanke. Now, the crucial question arises: How should we anticipate the trajectory of inflation and interest rates as we approach the upcoming year? #newwaveglobal #usa #economy

Wed, 27 Dec 2023 - 18min - 57 - General Asim's Visit to US | Pakistan's Role in US Strategy: Kashmir and Afghan Refugee Challenges
Michael Kugelman, an expert in foreign policy, joins Misbah Azam and Faraz Darvesh in a discussion about the recent visit of General Asim Munir, the Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan, to the United States. The visit, which extended beyond Washington included a meeting with the US Secretary-General in New York, marking a significant event given the considerable time since their last interaction. Despite the ongoing global focus on issues such as the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, Pakistan is not directly involved in these matters. However, the presence of Pakistan's powerful political leader, the Army Chief, in the US presents an opportunity, at least in theory, to reset relations. This leads to the question: What is the connection between the American government and the Army Chief, and vice versa? From the perspective of the Army Chief, there are several crucial issues that, unfortunately, the Americans may not be inclined to discuss. These include the Kashmir dispute, India, allegations against India regarding an assassination plot, or urging the US to reconsider its relationship with India. Additionally, a significant concern could be the mass expulsion of Afghan refugees, requiring the Americans to seek reassurance on this matter. #newwaveglobal #pakistan #usa

Wed, 13 Dec 2023 - 15min - 54 - Concerns Mount Over Afghan Refugee Crackdown in Pakistan: Questions Surrounding Policy Shifts
Faryal Shahzad is joined by Amina Masood, a human rights activist leading a petition to halt the crackdown on Afghans. In early October, Pakistan's interim government declared that all illegal immigrants must be repatriated within the month or face deportation. This has disproportionately affected millions of Afghan refugees and asylum seekers who have been residing in Pakistan for an extended period. Under section 4 of the country's citizenship act, children born to Afghan refugees in Pakistan are entitled to Pakistani citizenship. Justice Ayesha of the Supreme Court emphasized that Pakistan is obligated by UN Conventions to protect the rights of refugees. The influx of Afghan refugees to Pakistan began with the USSR invasion of Afghanistan, and now, the third generation of these families, born in Pakistan, unequivocally holds Pakistani citizenship. The reasons behind the sudden implementation of this policy, especially right before elections, remain obscure. The motives of the apex committee and the urgency behind giving Afghans only a month to leave are shrouded in mystery. The question arises: does the caretaker government possess the authority to implement such drastic and impactful policy changes? Hosts Misbah Azam and Faraz Dervesh are in conversation with Dr. Ameena Zia, the founder of Blue Ridge Impact Consulting, delving into a recent congressional bill addressing human rights violations in Pakistan. The recently approved resolution, championed by a congressional leader from Georgia, signifies a positive stride in diaspora political involvement. The resolution begins by addressing the impact of floods in Pakistan and underscores the imperative for the development of infrastructure. In the realm of human rights, the focus within the resolution centers on the political climate in Pakistan, specifically highlighting Imran Khan's detention and its evolving nature over recent months. #newwaveglobal #pakistan #imrankhan #congress #usa
Fri, 08 Dec 2023 - 24min - 52 - Decoding BRICS: Implications and Prospects for Pakistan's Membership
Today's conversation with economist Nauraiz Rana (World Bank), and Rammal Hashmi delves into geopolitics and global alliances, with a focus on BRICS—the consortium comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Originally BRIC, coined in 2001 by Goldman Sachs economist Jim O'Neill, it expanded in 2010 to include South Africa, challenging the established world order. Born out of a desire to counter the dominance of the United States and its Western allies, BRICS has evolved into a platform for major emerging economies. Against this backdrop, we explore Pakistan's formal bid for BRICS membership, raising questions about implications, challenges, and the broader global landscape. #newwaveglobal #brics #pakistan #politics
Fri, 08 Dec 2023 - 16min - 51 - Crisis in Gaza: Netanhayu's Claims, Political Stances, and Hopes for Ceasefire
Host Amina Saqib is joined by Prof. Junaid Ahmad, who teaches Religion, Law, and Global Politics and is the Director of the Center for the Study of Islam and Decoloniality, Islamabad, Pakistan. Children in Palestine are dying every 15 minutes, with schools and hospitals targeted. The Israeli Prime Minister claims these sites harbor Hamas, but doubts arise about the evidence. The discussion explores the ongoing assault, potential ethnic cleansing, and the widening gap between public desire for a ceasefire and political leaders' stance. Prof. Junaid hopes that continued support for Israel becomes politically costly, leading to a reconsideration of the situation. #newwaveglobal #gaza #israel #palestine #humanrights

Fri, 01 Dec 2023 - 15min - 49 - COP28: Making Loss and Damage Fund Work| Will Rich Countries Contribute to Climate Action?
Maryam Shabbir, an environmental expert, is joined by Harjeet Singh, Head of Global Political Strategy at Climate Action Network International to discuss the upcoming COP28. At COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh, developing countries were finally successful in establishing the transitional committee for the operationalization of the loss and damage fund. The transitional committee met four times in a year and submitted the draft. The developing countries have a problem with the World Bank as an institution to receive money. Now all eyes are on COP28 to see where things go. This time, the situation goes beyond denying climate change, with science confirming the impact of burning fossil fuels over the last 150 years as the primary cause of the climate crisis. Those most responsible, including countries and corporations, need to pay for the consequences faced by those who played no role in causing the crisis. Developed countries, including Pakistan, must take the lead in supporting developing nations affected by the crisis. #newwaveglobal #climatechange #cop28
Fri, 01 Dec 2023 - 16min - 48 - Pakistan's Disastrous Performance in Cricket World Cup 2023 | Islamabad United GM Speaks
Harris Jalil Mir, General Manager of Islamabad United, joins Nauraiz Rana in reflecting on Pakistan's performance in the recently concluded cricket World Cup 2023. From a fan's perspective, it's undeniably disappointing for the entire nation, as cricket serves as a unifying force in Pakistan, with everyone eagerly anticipating this major event. However, from a sports marketing and managerial standpoint, the outcome was somewhat inevitable given the numerous radical changes within our cricket board, including three different chairmen in barely a year. Apart from the Pakistani team that traveled to India, there was a notable absence of representation, including journalists, management, spectators, and commentators. This lack of support raises questions about the players' psychological state and potential demotivation. The essence of such events is to promote inclusion, and the restrictions on travel between countries deprived many of the opportunity to participate, rendering the event somewhat senseless. #newwaveglobal #cricket #pakistan #worldcup #india
Fri, 01 Dec 2023 - 21min - 47 - Amplifying Diaspora Voices in the US, Local Leadership, and Human Rights Advocates
Hosts Misbah Azam and Faraz Darvesh are joined by Dr Ameena Zia, professor of Political Economy and founder of Blue Ridge Impact Consulting, with a focus on sustaining policy matters; and Sumbul Aurangzeb, former head of district project of US congressman, Eddie Bernice Johnson, currently focusing on non-profit development of local politics. As the diaspora voice echoes in the U.S., a letter has been addressed to the U.S. Congress highlighting concerns about human rights violations and related issues in Pakistan, specifically in connection to the detention of Imran Khan. Simultaneously, supporters of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Imran Khan are actively engaged in lobbying efforts in the United States, advocating for the cessation of military aid and seeking assistance with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) program. Conversely, Imran Khan's sister has asserted their intention to pursue legal action against Donald Lu, alleging his involvement in a conspiracy to overthrow Imran Khan's government. #newwaveglobal

Fri, 24 Nov 2023 - 21min - 45 - Gaza's Cry for Justice: Ashraf Qazi Decries US-Backed Genocide, Questions UN Security Council
Faryal Shahzad is joined with Ashraf Jahangir Qazi, a Pakistani diplomat and former ambassador to the US, Syria, Russia, and China, as well as former High Commissioner to India. He also served as the head of the UN Mission and special representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in Iraq and Sudan. He delves into the harrowing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, portraying it as a man-made apocalypse, and criticizes the international response, particularly the UN Security Council's failure to address the conflict effectively. Furthermore, he points to the United States' alleged support for Israel's genocide, challenging the nation's proclaimed commitment to democracy and human rights. The discussion further sheds light on the challenges within the UN system and underscores the urgency of addressing the crisis to prevent further suffering. Tue, 21 Nov 2023 - 38min - 44 - Global North Leaders' Silence on West Bank Atrocities Despite Validated Israeli Allegations
Sajid Tarrar and Faraz Darvesh join Misbah Azam to discuss the deeply distressing situation between Hamas and Israel. Israel's response appears to be disproportionately severe, with accusations of actions amounting to genocide, including attacks on hospitals, mosques, and churches – all considered categorical war crimes. Recent diplomatic efforts by the Arab League and OIC proved unsuccessful in reaching a resolution. Iran's proposal to label Israel as a terrorist state was rejected, as was Syria's suggestion to sever diplomatic ties. There is a notable inconsistency among global leaders from the North, who, despite some of Israel's past allegations being validated, have not offered apologies or support to the West Bank amid the reported atrocities it has endured. #newwaveglobal #gaza #israel #unitedstates
Tue, 21 Nov 2023 - 18min - 43 - Silencing Dissent: Academia's Response to the Israel-Palestine Conflict
Fawzia Afzal Khan, a professor of English and former director of the Women and Gender Studies Program at Montclair State University, engages in a conversation with Amina Saqib on the ongoing conflict in Gaza. As we step into the second month of the Israel-Palestine conflict, there seems to be no resolution in sight, fostering a growing division. Those advocating for Palestine's cause are now unfairly branded as anti-Semitic. This term is wielded as a tool to stifle any voices calling for a ceasefire and justice. Speaking out against the harsh reality faced by Palestinians does not make one an anti-Semite. Within academic circles, untenured faculty members, who lack the protection of tenure, find themselves particularly vulnerable. They have been explicitly instructed to remain silent, especially those who attempt to present alternative perspectives on the conflict. #newwaveglobal #gaza #israel #palestine

Tue, 21 Nov 2023 - 14min - 41 - Netanyahu's Dehumanizing Rhetoric | Challenges of Jewish Advocates in the Israel-Palestine Conflict
In this interview, Nauraiz Rana, an economist with the World Bank, engages with Jesse Franzblau, a senior policy adviser and vocal human rights activist, in an exploration of the complexities within the Israel-Palestine conflict. Against the backdrop of recent devastating attacks on residential complexes, Jesse delves into the nuanced narratives perpetuated by world leaders and the impactful implications these narratives hold. The conversation uncovers Jesse's deep insights into Netanyahu's rhetoric and the historical context that shapes it, exposing a trail of disinformation and dehumanization tactics aimed at justifying violent policy decisions. As a Jewish advocate for Palestinian rights, Jesse sheds light on the challenges faced by individuals within his community, who often face labels like "anti-Israel" or "anti-Semitic" when expressing support for Palestinians. Central to the conversation is the role of the United States in the conflict, particularly its financial aid to Israel. Jesse emphasizes the urgency of preventing further funding and advocating for a ceasefire, highlighting the pivotal role played by organizations like Jewish Voice for Peace in lobbying for policy changes. #newwaveglobal #israel #gaza #unitedstates #palestine

Tue, 14 Nov 2023 - 14min - 39 - Self-Defense or Genocide? Does Israel's War on Gaza Predate Hamas' Terror Attack on October 7th.
There is deliberate and collective refusal to acknowledge and accept the cause of the ongoing violence which is rooted in Israel's brutal occupation and systematic subjugation of the Palestinians. Any omission of context from the prevailing mainstream narrative perpetuated by political and institutional actors, and Western media and politicians is shamefully misleading. In this video, we answer two key questions: 1. Did Israel's war on Gaza "start" on October 7th as a result of Hamas' "unprovoked" attack? 2. Can the ongoing onslaught on the unarmed civilians of Gaza be characterized as "war" or is it clearly an act of genocide? #Israel #Palestine #Gaza
Sat, 04 Nov 2023 - 18min - 38 - Pakistan's Agricultural Future: Addressing Rural Poverty, Exploitative Practices, & Low Productivity
In his book, "Development Poverty and Power in Pakistan," Syed Muhammad Ali, a development anthropologist, delves into the political economy of Pakistan's agriculture. Collaborating with Naurain Rana in this interview, an economist at the World Bank, Syed Ali highlights key discoveries from his work. Pakistan's agricultural industry stands as a primary contributor to the GDP, accounting for more than 19% and engaging over 40% of the populace. Despite this, the farmers find themselves situated at the lower end of the socioeconomic hierarchy. Furthermore, despite being an agrarian economy, the industry grapples with exploitative farming practices, resulting in the lowest agricultural productivity, which has contributed to a significant discrepancy between the nation's potential and actual output in the agricultural sector. Syed Ali observes that while urbanization is evident, it remains unsustainable due to the proliferation of slum areas. This urban shift differs significantly from Western models, which historically relied on imperialism and colonization to fuel urban growth through access to raw materials and labor. The process of "de-peasantization", combined with subsidized access to tractors but escalating seed costs, diminished the reliance on numerous sharecroppers. Managing a large workforce, even in an exploitative manner, became increasingly burdensome. Another notable aspect is the concept that controlling land equates to controlling people. Large land ownership in Pakistan historically secured captive vote banks, with the military and feudal families holding significant stakes in agricultural land. Over time, these feudal families evolved their sources of power as the military maintained a substantial interest in agricultural land. #newwaveglobal #farming #agriculture #pakistan
Wed, 01 Nov 2023 - 38min - 37 - Gaza Continues to Suffer: Hamas's Resistance | Palestinian Identity and Right to Self-Determination
Amina Saqib is joined by Professor Abdul Jabbar, who teaches English and Middle-Eastern Politics with a focus on Gaza-Palestine at the College of San Francisco and is a former professor of English at UC Berkeley. Dr Jabbar argues that Hamas, as the de facto authority in Gaza, has faced a complex set of choices over the years, driven by the unique challenges and circumstances of their situation. Since its election in 2006, Hamas has been subjected to a severe blockade by Israel and Egypt, which has had a devastating impact on the population in Gaza. This blockade, in place since 2006, has severely restricted the flow of goods, people, and services in and out of Gaza, essentially isolating its residents from the outside world. In this context, some argue that Hamas's approach can be seen as a form of resistance to the crippling effects of the blockade. Moreover, there is a prevailing argument that the blockade itself, as an act of war, has played a role in perpetuating the cycle of violence in the region. It has led to a situation where the residents of Gaza, particularly those in dire circumstances, see resistance as one of the few remaining options. This resistance is multifaceted, involving not only military actions but also political and diplomatic efforts. #newwaveglobal
Fri, 27 Oct 2023 - 47min - 36 - Israel's War Crimes, Dehumanization, and Calls for Humanity
Amina Saqib is joined by Fawzia Afzal-Khan, a distinguished professor of English and former director of the Women and Gender Studies Program at Montclair State University. The discussion focuses on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's characterization of Gaza as a "city of evil" that serves to manipulate the laws of war. It's vital to recognize the humanity of every life lost in conflicts and avoid terms like "collateral damage," which devalue individuals. The vast asymmetry in the conflict, with Israel's superior weaponry, underscores the urgency of Western and international leaders reducing tension and violence. Israel frames its actions as conforming to the laws of war, asserting its moral high ground. In contrast, it dehumanizes Palestinians, portraying them as ignorant of these laws, thus labeling them as immoral. Statements like Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant calling Palestinians "animals" and comparisons to "rats or snakes" on Israeli social media aim to legitimize war crimes and civilian deaths. #newwaveglobal #israel #gaza #palestine

Wed, 25 Oct 2023 - 1h 25min - 33 - Hamas, the Palestinian Struggle, Iran, and the Geopolitical Complexities
Misbah Azam is joined by Kamran Bokhari to discuss the situation in the Middle East. Hamas, as an entity, cannot independently operate, and it is known that most Arab states do not support it. In fact, the majority of Arab states are strongly opposed to Hamas. Any coordination with Hamas is primarily diplomatic and focused on humanitarian efforts for the Gaza Strip. Excluding this, nearly all other states oppose Hamas. This is in contrast to Iran, which otherwise has a revisionist agenda and supports Hamas in its goal to establish an Islamist entity by targeting Israel. Hamas is diverting the legitimate Palestinian struggle for its own purposes. Through these proxies, the Iranian regime is effectively isolating other states, as they lack effective solutions to the issue. It is misguided to believe that Hamas and its actions will lead to Palestinian self-determination due to various geopolitical factors, including the deep divisions within the Palestinian and Israeli populations regarding the two-state solution. #newwaveglobal #israel #palestine
Sat, 21 Oct 2023 - 29min - 32 - Gaza Crisis: Unprecedented Suffering and Human Rights Atrocities
A renowned human rights activist, Hina Jilani, joins Rabia Mehmood to discuss Israel's relentless bombardment of Gaza, one of the world's most densely populated areas, using 6,000 bombs in just six days. This scale of terror is hard to fathom, but here's the stark reality: Israel, backed by Western powers, dropped more bombs on Gaza's civilians in a week than the U.S.-led coalition did monthly against ISIS from 2014 to 2019 in Iraq and Syria. In a chilling comparison, Israel's week of bombings exceeded the U.S.'s year-long bombing campaign in Afghanistan. For this besieged population, there are no ambulances; Gazans transport their wounded loved ones to whatever functioning medical facilities remain, often in rundown vehicles, risking further harm. Precision in our words is vital; language has been weaponized to dehumanize and rationalize massive violence and ethnic cleansing. Language has also been stripped of its impact. Calls for empathy have yielded vague and disjointed responses from human rights advocates and celebrities, highlighting the limitations of identity politics. Human Rights Watch has confirmed that Israel used internationally banned white phosphorus in Gaza and Lebanon, a substance that causes excruciating burns and is often fatal. This is a clear war crime, and Israel's history of using it is well-documented. #newwaveglobal #israel #palestine #gaza

In this insightful interview, Dr. Muhammad Zeshan and Amina Saqib discuss the prevalence, diagnosis, and treatment of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). They highlight that ADHD is not limited to childhood and can persist into adulthood. It comes in three main presentations: inattentive, hyperactive, and combined. The conversation also addresses concerns about overdiagnosis and overmedication of ADHD, emphasizing the importance of proper assessment and treatment by qualified professionals. While medication is highly effective, non-pharmacological treatments, including therapy, ADHD coaching, and omega-3 fatty acids, can be valuable complements. #newwaveglobal #health #adhd
Tue, 17 Oct 2023 - 33min - 30 - Business, Power, and Politics in Pakistan
Zeerak Rana's guest today is Dr. Adeel Malik, an Associate Professor at the University of Oxford; International Development Department. His research focuses on the political economy of development - Pakistan and the Middle Eastern region. Dr. Adeel begins by highlighting one of the fundamental concerns for investors in Pakistan - the need for predictability and stability in the business environment. Large-scale investments often span several years, even decades, and require inter-temporal commitments. Investors seek assurances that their assets and investments will not be threatened or expropriated. In such uncertain environments, businesses tend to align themselves with the most stable and powerful institutions in the country. While he recognizes the pressing need for economic reform in Pakistan, he highlights the challenges associated with implementing such reforms. Tax reform, for instance, is a contentious issue as it directly affects powerful interest groups, such as real estate tycoons. These groups have significant political clout, making meaningful reform difficult to achieve. #newwaveglobal #pakistan #economy #politics
Sat, 23 Sep 2023 - 47min - 29 - Pakistan on the Brink of a Food Insecurity Crisis | How Can It Be Prevented?
Dr. Neelum Nigar, the Director of the Center for Strategic Perspective (CSP) at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad, has taken up the mantle of overseeing research and advocacy efforts specifically geared towards addressing Pakistan's non-traditional community challenges, with a primary focus on the looming specter of food insecurity. Pakistan finds itself on a perilous trajectory towards a severe food insecurity crisis, a situation akin to that experienced by nations at war. This alarming trend is exacerbated by an ongoing confluence of political and livelihood crises, which are eroding people's purchasing power in diverse and profound ways. As a stark indicator of this impending crisis, Pakistan currently ranks a concerning 99 out of 130 countries on the global hunger index, signifying a profound and pervasive food insecurity issue affecting 36.9% of the population. As we approach the critical turning point of September, the situation is expected to further deteriorate. In this exclusive interview, we delve into the measures Pakistan has thus far put in place to shield its people from the impending food crisis, seeking to understand the degree of preparedness and the semblance of a safety net that exists for its vulnerable population. #newwaveglobal #pakistan #food
Sat, 23 Sep 2023 - 37min - 28 - Neoliberalism: Principle, Controversies, and its Influence in South Asia
Dr. Gary Gerstle is a professor of American History at the University of Cambridge. Tune into this discussion as Gary explores the notion of Neoliberalism in his book "Rise and Fall of the Neoliberal Order,", which is a multifaceted and debated concept. It emerged in the mid-20th century as an economic and political philosophy that advocates several core principles. Firstly, neoliberalism champions free-market capitalism, asserting that minimal government intervention in the economy fosters efficiency, innovation, and prosperity. It emphasizes limited government involvement, advocating for reductions in state size and social welfare programs. Individualism and personal responsibility are central, with an emphasis on individuals making their own economic choices. Deregulation is a key tenet, with proponents aiming to remove barriers and restrictions that hinder market competition. Neoliberalism also supports privatization, transferring state-owned services to the private sector in pursuit of efficiency. Additionally, it encourages globalization and international trade as vehicles for expanding markets and economic growth. In essence, neoliberalism is a creed seeking to unleash capitalism by promoting free markets, limited government, individualism, deregulation, privatization, and globalization. These ideas continue to influence policymaking and fuel discussions on economic and political strategies worldwide, including in South Asia. #newwaveglobal
Sun, 17 Sep 2023 - 35min - 27 - The Resurgence of COVID-19 in the United States | Misinformation | Threat of Evolving Variants
Dr. Zoovia Hamiduddin is a long-time medical practitioner and MD and is based in New York. Her specialization is internal medicine. Tune into this discussion as Dr. Zoovia and Raza Rumi explore the resurgence of COVID-19 in the United States, accompanied by a concerning rise in cases of long-term COVID-19. This resurgence is exacerbated by the persistent dissemination of misinformation through various media channels, which has contributed to vaccine hesitancy among a significant portion of the population. Additionally, a new variant of the virus has emerged within the United States, displaying a staggering 30 mutations. Each of these mutations represents an ongoing evolutionary process that could potentially lead to increased virulence. In response to these challenges, there is an urgent need for increased regulation of social media platforms to curb the spread of conspiracy theories and the dissemination of false scientific information. The blurring of the lines between politics and public health measures has further complicated the situation, leading to a negative impact on attitudes towards vaccination. This multifaceted crisis underscores the importance of addressing misinformation and promoting vaccination as crucial steps in the battle against COVID-19 in the United States. #newwaveglobal #unitedstates #health #covid19 #pandemic
Sun, 17 Sep 2023 - 26min - 26 - Pakistan's Caretaker Government: Legitimacy, Authority, and Claim to Power
Today, our focus is on Pakistan's interim government and the potential repercussions it may have on the country's trajectory. Joining Nauriaz Rana is Syed Muhammad Ali, a development anthropologist and adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University, also known for his regular columns in the Express Tribune. The past few years have seen significant turbulence in Pakistan, particularly within its political landscape. This period included a vote of no confidence that ultimately led to the removal of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, the earlier dissolution of provincial assemblies, and events on May 9th that inadvertently caused the decline of Pakistan's largest national-level political party. Now, with the presence of a caretaker administration, questions abound regarding its legitimacy and authority. Syed Muhammad Ali delves into the intricacies of caretaker governments in Pakistan, examining their mandates and the extent of their power to implement various reforms. #newwaveglobal #pakistan #politics #government

Thu, 14 Sep 2023 - 29min - 24 - Pakistan's Higher Education Quagmire
Dr. Yaqoob Bangash, a distinguished professor, researcher, and historian hailing from Lahore, Pakistan, addresses the critical issues plaguing higher education in Pakistan. This interview dives deep into the alarming state of higher education in the country. Dr. Yaqoob begins by shedding light on the disturbing trend of rapid university charter approvals by the Pakistani Parliament, both in the private and public sectors. He asserts that this practice has been ongoing for decades, resulting in a proliferation of substandard educational institutions. These institutions, some with questionable names and locations, risk diluting the quality of education and churning out graduates with degrees of questionable value. Moreover, he exposes the issue of fake knowledge generation and publication in academia, which further erodes the quality of education. He highlights the urgent need for regulatory bodies like the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to address these challenges rather than focusing solely on numerical expansion. The interview further delves into the dire consequences of this educational crisis, emphasizing the potential for rising unemployment and social resentment among the youth, a significant demographic in Pakistan. Dr. Yaqoob makes a compelling case for the need to differentiate between colleges and universities, emphasizing that universities should be centers of knowledge creation, not just knowledge dissemination. #newwaveglobal #pakistan #education
Tue, 12 Sep 2023 - 11min - 23 - Pakistan's Drinking Water Security Crisis
Pakistan currently faces a multitude of crises encompassing economic, political, and social turmoil, and an energy shortage. Amidst these challenges, a more pressing concern emerges, surpassing issues of debt and inflation, and that is the looming problem of water scarcity. Water serves as the cornerstone of sustenance, not only driving the nation but also sustaining individual lives. In this discussion, Nauraiz Rana engages in conversation with Laila Kasuri, an expert in water and sustainable development with years of experience in the field. It is worth noting that Pakistan receives a staggering 229 billion cubic meters of water annually, a quantity surpassed by only 16 other countries worldwide. There is a critical need for a comprehensive understanding of both absolute water scarcity and the economic aspects of water security. Many reports declaring Pakistan as water-scarce rely on outdated data that fails to account for the actual runoff the country receives. Pakistan boasts numerous water sources, with some remaining unaccounted for in current calculations. This raises a pivotal question because it is convenient for governments to assert that Pakistan lacks sufficient water when in reality, scarcity stems more from governance challenges than any natural shortage. #newwaveglobal #water #economy #crisis
Sat, 09 Sep 2023 - 40min - 22 - China's Strategic Challenges to India | India's Economic Ambitions
Host Raza Rumi discusses the escalating tensions between India and China with Kamran Bukhari, an expert from The Newsline Institute in Washington, D.C. They delve into the recent developments, China's strategic challenges to India, and India's economic aspirations. Despite India's impressive growth as the world's fifth-largest economy, Kamran explains why it's unlikely to replace China anytime soon. The interview also highlights the hurdles foreign investors face in India, including political stability and communal tensions. Kamran provides a balanced perspective, acknowledging India's potential while emphasizing the need for a conducive business environment. The conversation then turns to Pakistan's role in this complex regional equation. Kamran suggests that Pakistan, due to its vulnerabilities and strong ties with Beijing, is better off staying out of the India-China conflict. #newwaveglobal #china #india #usa #economy
Wed, 06 Sep 2023 - 22min - 21 - Pakistan Rupee Devaluation | Currency Crisis | Economic Meltdown | Way Forward
Bilal Lakhani, a New York-based political and economic analyst, delves into Pakistan's ongoing currency crisis and the urgent need for structural reforms. The Pakistani Rupee's devaluation against the US Dollar is examined, with alarming statistics highlighting the rapid decline from 75 Rupees to a dollar in 2008 to a staggering 330 Rupees in 2023. Bilal emphasizes that this crisis is both a consequence and a driver of Pakistan's economic turmoil. The conversation navigates the complexities of devaluation, questioning its effectiveness in boosting exports, given the inelastic nature of many essential imports. Bilal dispels the notion of a quick fix, emphasizing the imperative of long-term, politically-driven structural reforms to attract investment, increase exports, and reduce imports. The interview underscores that the solutions must be political, requiring a government with a mandate from the people. It highlights the challenges of achieving a consensus among Pakistan's political parties on a reform agenda and the need for continuity in government to ensure sustained progress. With a stark analysis of Pakistan's economic predicament, this interview provides valuable insights into the complex interplay of politics and economics in the nation's future. #newwaveglobal #pakistan #inflation #economy #currentaffairs

Thu, 31 Aug 2023 - 24min - 18 - Exploring the BISP Program: Comparisons, Politics, and Impact on Poverty
Dr. Rehan Jamil is a postdoctoral fellow in Public Policy and Administration at the Department of Government at the London School of Economics (LSE). In conversation with Zeerak Rana, he discusses the politics of cash transfer programs in Pakistan and in comparison with similar programs around the world. The Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) in Pakistan is a social safety net initiative aimed at providing cash transfers to low-income households. It was launched in 2008 and was named after former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. BISP primarily targets vulnerable groups to alleviate poverty and improve their socio-economic conditions. BISP's structure and goals are comparable to other cash transfer programs globally, such as Brazil's Bolsa Família, India's Direct Benefit Transfer, and Mexico's Oportunidades. These programs share the objective of reducing poverty by directly providing financial assistance to eligible recipients. They often involve conditionalities, such as children's school attendance and regular health checkups, to encourage human capital development. In Pakistan, BISP's implementation has faced both praise and criticism. Supporters highlight its role in addressing poverty and improving the lives of marginalized communities. However, concerns have been raised about transparency, targeting accuracy, and potential misuse of funds. The program's politics are intertwined with debates on its efficiency, sustainability, and the role of political parties in its administration. Overall, while BISP draws inspiration from similar programs worldwide, its effectiveness and political dynamics in Pakistan make it a subject of ongoing discussions and evaluations. #newwaveglobal #pakistan #health #bisp #government #pti #ppp #brazil #mexico #india

World Bank economist Nauraiz Rana unravels the varying benets of increased women's participation in the workforce with esteemed Ms. Fauzia Vaqar the Federal Ombudsperson for Protection Against Harassment at Workplace, Government of Pakistan. Ms. Vaqar brings decades of activism and experience in women's rights and human rights in Pakistan and globally to this position. Formerly she headed the Rah-Center for Management and Development. From her experience as an advocate for women empowerment, Ms. Fauzia explains that the absence of women from socio-economic settings is not to be xed by greater designations of money or capital, but rather it is a problem that can be solved through greater coordination between government departments and the civil society. She argues that at large, in political and policy corridors, the ght for women's participation is actively welcomed and worked upon. However, Mr. Rana provides a compelling analysis of the lack of social responsibility and eorts to reduce gender pay gaps by private sector rms in Pakistan.
