- 293 - A Year in Review for Wild Awake Hearts
We’re ending this year with a deep reflection: a year in review for wild awake hearts. You know it’s the end of the year when there you are, just trying to drink your tea in peace, and your feed is full of “Optimize Your 2026,” “New Year, New You,” and shit like that. Meanwhile, the Buddha is somewhere looking at all these color-coded habit trackers like, “Beloveds… you know you’re still going to die, right?” So let’s try something different. Something with a Buddhist flair. Something that lets you walk into the new year not as a “better project,” but as a freer, truer, more alive version of you. You will learn: // Why conventional year-end reviews often turn into spiritualized self-attack, and what to do instead. // How to use Buddhist teachings like impermanence and not-self to soften, not harden, your reflection. // A simple way to honor both heartbreak and beauty, inspired by Mark Nepo’s “Adrift.” // How to bring a social justice lens into your inner work so your practice isn’t separated from the world’s pain. // Questions that reveal where we abandoned ourselves this year, and where we showed up bravely. // How to recognize your own moments of aliveness and decolonize the dreams you’re chasing. // Why remembering lineage is a rebellious act // Ways to honor the earth as a living relative in your year-end reflection, not just a backdrop. // How to set intentions that feel like prayers rather than punishments, and one simple ritual you can do today. Fri, 19 Dec 2025 - 31min - 292 - Wherever We Go, There We Are: The Myth of "Geographic Cure"
This is a PSA and reminder for us all that sometimes changing our circumstances (like through a move, leaving our job or a relationship etc) really is the most compassionate, wise, and liberating choice…and sometimes it’s just changing what our suffering looks like on a superficial level. I’ll share my own story of leaving Alaska for Spain and jam on how to know when it’s helpful to change our environment and when it’s not. Plus, we’ll explore how Buddhist psychology can help us discern whether to stay or go. In this episode, you will learn: //The myth of the “geographical cure,” and why moving abroad rarely delivers the fresh start people imagine // Why the mind always travels with us. // How to tell the difference between suffering created by our environment and suffering created by our internal patterns. // When changing circumstances is a wise, life-supporting choice, and when it becomes avoidance in disguise. // What Buddhist teachings on emptiness and perception show us about our relationship to place.// How trauma science and positive psychology explain the limits of “starting over.”// A simple reflection practice to help you discern whether you need an internal shift, an external shift, or both. Fri, 5 Dec 2025 - 31min - 291 - Spiritual Audacity
Today we’re exploring what it’s like to live with a kind of inner fire that refuses to stay quiet. Ziji + Spiritual Audacity. A deep, embodied courage that comes from being radically awake in our own lives. We’ll look at how this shows up personally and in the collective, and how choosing to live from our real nature, steady in love, committed to truth, and devoted to collective liberation. In this way, our practice becomes both a practice and a rebellion. You will learn: • Why speaking up matters when truth is being distorted. • How spiritual audacity becomes love in action. • How the lie of separation weakens us, and connection strengthens courage. • Why disappointing others is often necessary to stay aligned. • How anger can catalyze action without taking over. • How collapse and reactivity keep us stuck, and what the middle way looks like. • How spiritual audacity interrupts old stories and reconnects you to your basic goodness. Fri, 21 Nov 2025 - 26min - 289 - Greatest Hits Vol. 34 - The Risks of Lovingkindness
This week is a revisit of an episode exploring metta (the Buddhist practice of lovingkindness) and how when we hold back to protect our hearts, we can welcome in more vulnerability, re-opening ourselves to lovingkindness through vulnerability. We’ll jam on what to do when we hit a wall and why we might struggle to express lovingkindness toward ourselves and others. In this episode you will learn: // Why vulnerability is the most powerful form of protection for our hearts. // How being willing to drop the armor is key to experiencing and giving lovingkindness // Why protecting our hearts can sever us from a sense of love and belonging // Two basic qualities we can train in to practice lovingkindness // What to do when we hit a wall seeing or expressing lovingkindness toward ourselves and others Resources: // This episode was inspired by teachings from Tara Brach that she gave during the 2-year Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Training Program. Fri, 14 Nov 2025 - 40min - 288 - The Concept of No-Self (and Greater Intimacy) - Off the Cushion Part 7
When everything around us is changing, how do we stay grounded without shutting down? In this week’s episode, we dive into The Three Marks of Existence. Qualities that are true for anything that exists. Yes, anything! We’ll explore impermanence, suffering, and the concept of “not-self” and talk about how releasing clinging to our sense of Self can deepen connection and freedom and ease in our lives. This allows us to love AND ride the challenging times more freely. You will learn: • Why facing change, instead of fighting it, might be the most radical act of peace. • How to turn the ache of impermanence into appreciation, presence, and freedom. • The real meaning of “suffering” in Buddhism (and why it’s not as depressing as it sounds). • What the Buddha meant by “not-self” — and how loosening our grip on identity can bring deep relief and belonging. • Simple ways to meet uncertainty and loss with steadiness, not fear. • How these teachings can make you more grounded, compassionate, and awake in a world that’s constantly shifting. Fri, 7 Nov 2025 - 29min - 287 - 5 Self-Sabotage Patterns ALL Brains Have - Off the Cushion Part 6
Ever notice how just when your practice starts to deepen, our mind gets loud as hell, distracted, unmotivated, or tired? Don’t worry - it’s totally normal. This week, we’re getting real about what’s known as the Five Hindrances; the craving, aversion, doubt, fear/worry, and existential MEH that keep us stuck. We also explore how to manage them so we can continue to become the little Rebel Buddhas we already are beneath it all. You will learn: // How to recognize the Five Hindrances as natural patterns of the mind, not personal failures. // How to meet craving, anger, fatigue, restlessness, and doubt with mindfulness instead of resistance. // How modern psychology mirrors these teachings as trauma responses and emotional defenses. // How each hindrance transforms into its opposite strength when met with awareness. // How to use mindfulness and compassion to balance energy, emotion, and focus in daily life. // How the Brahmavihārās (loving-kindness, compassion, joy, equanimity) serve as our hearts’ response to difficulty. Fri, 24 Oct 2025 - 28min - 285 - The Still Point: Where Freedom Begins - Off the Cushion Part 5
This we wrap up our discussion of the Eightfold Path by talking about 3 components of Meditation/samādhi: Wise Effort, Wise Mindfulness, and Wise Concentration. We’ll talk about how our meditation practice isn’t just to calm the mind, and why we need it now more than ever. Plus I’ll give you some ways you can begin practicing samādhi in your own daily life. You will learn: // The real reason we meditate (it’s not what you think!) // The 3 parts of samādhi: Wise Effort, Wise Mindfulness, and Wise Concentration // Why modern industrialized society has given many of us a complicated relationship with “effort” // How meditation (samādhi) trains the mind to pause between impulse and action - not to escape life, but to meet it fully. // Why ethical living quiets inner conflict and creates the ground for real peace and a solid meditation practice. // How to recognize when effort becomes striving // What mindfulness truly means: remembering what matters and staying awake to what’s real, even when it’s uncomfortable. // How concentration offers refuge in an age of distraction // Why the Eightfold Path isn’t about checking out, but learning to see clearly and act with integrity in a world that needs awake hearts. Fri, 17 Oct 2025 - 27min - 284 - Remembering Our Humanity - A Lesson of the Ages
We can often think that very few ancient teachings could apply to these historic times, when things seem upended in ways the world has never seen (or so it seems;). This week, we explore lessons that are over 2600 years old that remind us of our humanity and what really matters, no matter the era, our job, our age, our nationality, our sexuality, our religion, or any other way we might identify. This is about getting clear about how we want to show up in the world, and committing to that for the benefit of our liberation - and others’. You will learn: // How ethics and inner peace go hand in hand // Why cultivating and committing to your own set of ethics is so critical in today’s world // An exploration of Wise Ppeech, Wise Action, and Wise Livelihood // How our work can be our prayer // 4 questions we can begin to ask ourselves to help us stay in alignment // 2 practices around wise speech and wise action to try out in our daily lives. Fri, 10 Oct 2025 - 32min - 283 - Wisdom In Action - Off the Cushion Part 3
This week’s episode continues our Off the Cushion and Into the World series. We’ll try to save ourselves some time and headache by starting to step onto the actual path the Buddha laid out for how to live with more freedom — the Noble Eightfold Path. Today, we focus on the first section: Wisdom, or Pañña — specifically, “Right” - or Wise - View and Right/Wise Intention. I’ll break down what each means, and why they help us make our mind more peaceful and kind - and bring less suffering into the world and more joy and freedom. Plus we’ll touch on some ways you can begin to practice these in your daily practice. You will learn: // What wisdom is and why we need wise view and wise intentions on our spiritual journey // 3 key lenses of Wise View to help us see and experience the world without resisting reality // The 3 types of Wise Intention we can move through life with // Some ways we can practice Wise View and Wise Intention in our messy, daily lives Resources: // Episode 40: Desire and Attachment // Episode 44: The Power of the Pause // Episode 77: Change Is Inevitable // Episode 278: Off the Cushion and Into the World, Part 1 // Episode 279: Reality Check - Off the Cushion + Into the World Part 2 // If you’re new to the squad, grab the Rebel Buddhist Toolkit I created at RebelBuddhist.com. Fri, 3 Oct 2025 - 24min - 282 - Our Choices Are More Important Than Luck
This week we dive into something extra personal for me - snapshots of struggles in my own life story. We’ll explore the power of the choices we all make and why we often struggle to believe that we’re just as capable as anyone else to create the life we want. And I’ll give you some encouragement so you can go out and find your own freedom! In this episode, you’ll learn: Why assumptions about someone else having it “easier than me” dismiss the reality of our power How comparison (harder/easier) can keep us stuck and distracted from what we need to do next The role of resilience and scrappy choices in creating freedom Why your accomplishments matter — whether or not you had help along the way Resources: // Episode 21: Define Your Freedom // Episode 93: Wake the F*ck Up! // Episode 174: Decolonize Your Mind – A Story of My Mother and Me // Episode 235: What’s Possible When We Let Go of Our Story // If you’re new to the squad, grab the Rebel Buddhist Toolkit I created at RebelBuddhist.com. Fri, 26 Sep 2025 - 40min - 281 - Reality Check - Off the Cushion + Into the World Part 2
This week we’re stepping right into the heart of a Buddhist version of a Reality Check. When the Buddha came out of his meditative state, he didn’t run to tell people about all the trippy things he experienced. Instead, he chose his first teaching to be about the Four Noble Truths - the fact that dissatisfaction is part of the human experience, and there’s a way to not get hooked by it. I’ll break down each of these aspects and how they lead to the most hopeful message of all: that despite the suffering and discomfort we will face in our lives, there is a way forward, so we can face any moment with resilience, joy, and freedom! You will learn: // Why facing the reality of the hard parts of life is actually a message of hope and freedom - even JOY // Why believing “good vibes only” will not set you free // How (and why) we often create our own suffering and discomfort - and how to flip that shizzle // The root cause of feeling dissatisfied and why letting go is a path to inner peace and liberation Resources: // Episode 60: How to Avoid Unnecessary Suffering // Episode 64: Cultivating Radiant Inner Confidence – Ziji // Episode 126: How to Know if You’re Making Spiritual Progress // Episode 278: Off the Cushion and Into the World, Part 1 // Dancing with Life by Philip Moffitt // If you’re new to the squad, grab the Rebel Buddhist Toolkit I created at RebelBuddhist.com. Fri, 19 Sep 2025 - 20min - 280 - Off the Cushion and Into the World - Part 1 Intro and the Three Jewels
This week is the first in our Off the Cushion and Into the World series. This series came from multiple requests for a course on Buddhist philosophy and psychology, and I wanted to offer this series on the foundational teachings here on the podcast. As the Dalai Lama said, you don’t have to be Buddhist to benefit from the teachings of Buddhism! You can use the tools to have less suffering in your life - no matter what your path is. In this first episode of the series, we explore the story of Siddhartha and the trials and tribulations that led to his Awakening; how he was a human who suffered just like us, and therefore how Awakening is something available to all of us. We explore the foundational values of inquiry and debate within Buddhism, and how we need to discover our own path and test things out for ourselves, not relying on blind faith. We also dive into the Three Refuges (aka the 3 Jewels) and why they’re essential on our journey, and how to explore our own versions of these refuges. Most of all, you learn how to begin applying these things to this wild and whacky human life. You will learn: // Why we might want to study these teachings in the first place - even if we aren’t Buddhist or religious // The story of Siddhartha (later know as Buddha) and why he’d leave a phat pad, buckets of money and a legacy of power // Why Buddhism is so unique in its practice of inquiry, questioning, debate, and no requirements or blind faith. (And why it often works well for atheists and agnostics as well) // The three jewels / refuges and why we need them on our journey // One practice you can try this week to show up with curiosity around your own sources of refuge and resourcing Resources: // Episode 122: Come See for Yourself – Ehipassiko // Episode 136: Freedom to Change Your Mind // Episode 198: WTF Is Enlightenment? // If you’re new to the squad, grab the Rebel Buddhist Toolkit I created at RebelBuddhist.com. It has all you need to start creating a life of more freedom, adventure, and purpose. Fri, 12 Sep 2025 - 20min - 279 - Greatest Hits Vol. 32 - Trusting Yourself and Your OWN Experiences
This week’s episode is all about one of the foundational teachings of Buddhism: ehipassiko. We’ll jam on what it means to “live the question” and why it’s important for us to see things for ourselves instead of relying on others’ experiences. Plus, we’ll talk about how to not judge others for how they choose to live their lives. Fri, 5 Sep 2025 - 22min - 278 - Alignment DOESN'T Always Feel Like Flow
This week we talk about the misguided idea that if it’s meant to be, it should be easy, and if it’s hard, it’s a sign that something is NOT meant to be. While there’s some validity to certain experiences like this, it isn’t universally true. In this episode, I share ways you can actually differentiate if your suffering is an indication of misalignment, or if it’s a part of the universality of the human experience. Plus I’ll share one practice you can start today to connect with that discomfort and keep moving forward, instead of fearing and being stuck in it. You will learn: // Why discomfort doesn’t mean we are misaligned or that it’s not meant to be… and what it ACTUALLY signifies // Why we tend to fear discomfort in the first place // How to know the difference between difficulty that comes from being misaligned on our path, and the universal challenges of the human experience // One practice you can start today to connect with discomfort instead of fear it - and move towards openness Resources: // Episode 9: Impermanence, Death, and Other Sexy Things // Episode 44: The Power of the Pause // Episode 63: Being Human is Hard - The First Noble Truth // Episode 100: How to Know You’re Making Progress // Episode 156: Savoring When Suffering Is Not Present // If you’re new to the squad, grab the Rebel Buddhist Toolkit I created at RebelBuddhist.com. Fri, 18 Jul 2025 - 19min - 271 - Greatest Hits Vol. 29 - It's Time to Let Go
This week’s episode is a special replay on a daily practice we can do to decrease unnecessary suffering - which is what this podcast is all about! It’s completely natural that things end - relationships, careers, objects we adore, and more. Yet we have so much resistance when things do come to an end, often feeling like it wasn’t supposed to happen. We’ll talk about the concept of “little deaths” that we experience in everyday life, plus the difference between when an ending is more easily accepted vs when we have more resistance. We also dive into how our modern industrialized consumerist society encourages resistance to endings, and how to counter that. Plus I’ll tell you the one thing we should spend more time thinking about to help accept the little endings for a life of more freedom. You will learn: // How our modern industrialized consumerist society feeds into our resistance to endings // How treating “little deaths” / endings with more respect and sacredness can lead to less unnecessary suffering and more joy + freedom // Why we feel the need to control our endings and how to let go of that feeling // The one thing we should spend more time thinking about to help accept the little endings (hint: it’s not what you’d think!) Fri, 2 May 2025 - 14min - 260 - Greatest Hits Vol. 26 - Lessons in Trust and Interdependence
This week I reflect on a recent visit to Hanoi, Vietnam, and how a simple experience of crossing the street turned into a very healing and eye-opening lesson in trust and interdependence. We’ll talk about how in the US, when it comes to navigating traffic and driving, we are taught to assume we are invisible. Drive defensively. Cross streets assuming no one sees you. In Hanoi, it was the opposite. If you wanted to do something as basic as cross the street, you have to assume you would be seen, and that people cared and would take care. I was able to literally walk into oncoming traffic amongst strangers - something we can’t do in many industrialized growth societies like the US. We explore the vulnerability and beauty of how humans can move through chaos together when we come from a place of interdependence and interbeing. You will learn: // What is possible when we embrace interdependence and the fact that we are connected to everything // The gifts that taking risks by being vulnerable and trusting others can bring to us (while using discernment, of course!) // How we can find healing in interdependence and trust in one another // Why so many industrialized growth societies are so far from interdependent interbeing, and how we can offset that Resources: // Episode 190: Islands of Sanctuary – Being a Refuge for Your People // If you’re new to the squad, grab the Rebel Buddhist Toolkit I created at RebelBuddhist.com. Fri, 25 Apr 2025 - 18min - 259 - Judgment vs Curiosity
This week’s topic is all about judgment and discernment. We can often default to judging situations and people, especially if we've been through trauma and we’re on the lookout for threats. Add to this a history of being gaslit, and it gets even harder to trust our inner wisdom. But understanding the difference between judgment and discernment can completely change how we respond to life and to other, making it more compassionate, expansive and creative.. The good news is that cultivating discernment is possible. In this episode, we dive into a practice that helps you do exactly that. You will learn: // How to deal with a history of gaslighting and its impact on self-trust // Why trauma makes the judging mind more intense // The secret to changing how we experience judgment (hint: Curiosity is huge!) // What can lead to deeper understanding of ourselves and others when activated // How to differentiate between judgmental thoughts vs facts // A simple practice to cultivate discernment in everyday life Resources: // Episode 44: The Power of the Pause // Episode 111: Judgement and Blame // If you’re new to the squad, grab the Rebel Buddhist Toolkit I created at RebelBuddhist.com. You will learn: // What “crowding out” is and how we can use to help us let go of what no longer serves us // How to know what the rights things to let in are // What happens when we DON’T let in // Some ways we can practice letting in when we feel ourselves stuck in old patterns Resources: // Episode 55: Letting Go to Grow // Episode 209: Ripening and the Inevitability of Our Awakening // If you’re new to the squad, grab the Rebel Buddhist Toolkit I created at RebelBuddhist.com. I’ll share my own story about how my husband and I could have ended it… and how my choice to speak and act wisely changed the course of our relationship and our parenting forever (and for good)! Fri, 4 Apr 2025 - 32min - 256 - Sacred Discipline
This week’s episode is all about Sacred Discipline - not the authoritarian, “I told you so” type of discipline, but a sacred discipline that comes from creating what WE wants. A Sacred Discipline that can set us free and help us live our Soul Purpose into the world (which, BTW, really needs it right now!). You will learn: // How our sneaky minds make us resist discipline - even when it’s our own damn selves wanting to do it! // Why over-identifying as a rebel or someone who only does “spontaneous” puts our dreams at risk // How the concept of Sacred Discipline is different than the OG idea of authoritarian, controlling discipline // The ways that Sacred Discipline helps us actualize our Soul Purpose // The importance of seeing Sacred Discipline as a practice, not a command // Why doing what you say you’re doing to do ISN’T anti-freedom // How to develop our own Sacred Discipline as a part of our daily practice Resources: // Episode 81: The Importance of a Daily Routine // Episode 210: Spiritual Friends and How to Make Them // If you’re new to the squad, grab the Rebel Buddhist Toolkit I created at RebelBuddhist.com. Fri, 10 Jan 2025 - 19min - 244 - The Complexity of Our Awakening
Today we talk about how to assess how “awake” we are in the various areas of our spiritual journey and the complexity of this process. This is essential because we can have made amazing progress in one area of awakening (like spiritual insight) but be still lacking in others (like ethics, or relational skills). We enter into real danger when we mistake progress in one area with progress in other areas - think of the example of a spiritual teacher who teaches about their very real experience of unity consciousness while exploiting their students at the same time. This incorrect belief that one area of progress means a wholistic awakening in other areas can lead to harm to ourselves and others. I’ll introduce you to Ken Wilber’s Levels of Awakening and give you the key to avoiding harm to ourselves and others through humility, discernment, and self-compassion. You will learn: // The dangers of thinking insight and realization in one area means progress in ALL areas // The importance of radical honesty with ourselves about our progress and coupling that with self-compassion // What Ken Wilber’s Levels of Awakening and areas of integration are // How false assessment of progress can be harmful to ourselves and others // The ways we can avoid enabling harm with our un-awakened areas through humility and practice Resources: // Episode 73: How to Be Your Own Guru // Episode 122: Come See for Yourself - Ehipassiko // Episode 162: Lessons from Ram Dass - Walking Each Other Home // Episode 188: Connected in Our Grief and Wonder // Episode 193: Lessons in Trust and Interdependence // Episode 238: If You Know and Don’t DO, You Don’t KNOW // If you’re new to the squad, grab the Rebel Buddhist Toolkit I created at RebelBuddhist.com. Fri, 23 Aug 2024 - 24min - 224 - Struggling with When Things End
In this week’s Episode we jam on a daily practice we can do to decrease unnecessary suffering - which is what this podcast is all about! You will learn: // How our modern industrialized consumerist society feeds into our resistance to endings // How treating “little deaths” / endings with more respect and sacredness can lead to less unnecessary suffering and more joy + freedom // Why we feel the need to control our endings and how to let go of that feeling // The one thing we should spend more time thinking about to help accept the little endings (hint: it’s not what you’d think!) Resources: // Episode 9: Impermanence, Death, and Other Sexy Things // Episode 77: Change is Inevitable // Episode 110: The Miracle of Being Alive // Check out this free training on What Really Matters // You can see how the power of accepting the ending of things is a deep practice - one that opens us to so much more joy and freedom and peace. Fri, 9 Aug 2024 - 22min - 222 - Greatest Hits Vol. 20 - Freedom to Change Your Mind
This week we talk about why we feel obligated to finish everything we start - even if we’re miserable in it. Careers, relationships, even small things like movies and a bad meal. Often it’s because we think changing our minds equals failure or some sort, but there are many others I’ll cover in this episode. I also share how we can make every choice worth it... even when that means walking away from something we’ve put a lot of time, money, and energy into. Fri, 2 Aug 2024 - 19min - 221 - Our True Self vs Our Self-Like Parts
This week we dive into the concept of Self-like parts - those parts of us that SEEM like well-intentioned, wise, compassionate parts of us, but that ultimately still feed the immature ego and false sense of self. We also explore the concept of Self in Internal Family Systems and how Buddhist philosophy can help us know when we’re driven by our True Self vs our Self-like parts. You will learn: // What the Self is and how it relates to the theory of Internal Family Systems… and our core essence // How self-like parts affect our Manager and Firefighter parts, and why they never actually help us as a result // The difference between self-like parts and our true Self and how to identify our self-like parts // Why true healing and development can only come from our true Self // How to build a mindful, compassionate relationship with our true Self AND our self-like parts. We’ll talk about how to hold realistic expectations for any “quick-fix” approaches you may try and the dangers of a quick-fix mindset. In this week’s episode, we talk about the culture of BIG manifestation, and how it can turn toxic. We’ll look at the importance of finding and accepting our own “enough” and how to sit in the moment and be present with the preciousness of life, exactly as it is right now. Plus, I’ll reveal an essential step to taking effective, healing action in these times - for ourselves AND our more-than-human world (hint - it’s not hustling or burning out on activism). You will learn: // How the culture of BIG manifestation can turn toxic // How to find and accept your “enough” // Why sitting in the moment can be WAY harder than daydreaming about what if… // The concept of wishlessness and how it can help us be present with the preciousness of life exactly as it is // How we can balance our goals and dreams… and what happens when we don’t // The key to taking effective, healing action - for ourselves AND our society Resources: // Episode 40: Desire and Attachment // Episode 69: Having Enough - Finding Your Balance // Episode 98: How to Stop Hustling // I’d love to hear from you! Fri, 5 Jul 2024 - 21min - 217 - True Elderhood No Matter Your Age
First, know that this episode is for people of all ages, because we are all elders to someone (there are always people younger than us!) and we are constantly having opportunities for growth in our spiritual maturity throughout our entire life. The concepts I introduce in this episode help shape how we age and the choices we make at all stages of life. Too often we believe that as we age, we should try to look, feel, and act as young as possible. But the truth is, that’s not the freaking point. We discuss a world where elders are seen as wisdom keepers, guides, and mentors for the community. Where they possess a deep knowledge and understanding that is invaluable to younger generations. This won’t just happen. We need to see this as our role to our people, and make our life decisions from that place. Instead of just sitting around and saving money to retire and travel, we can make our spiritual growth and maturity more intentional. We’ll jam on how we can continue to challenge the idea that aging is a period of decline, and talk about a few of the elders that I personally look up to and respect. You will learn: // Why thinking of true elderhood and spiritual maturity matters at ALL ages // How we often view elderhood vs what’s possible // Why taking responsibility for our spiritual maturity is crucial for playing an essential role in our communities // Why modern industrialized society doesn’t hold reverence or wisdom the possibilities in aging // Some examples of elders I deeply respect and look up to and the lessons they taught me // How we can continue to challenge the idea that aging is a period of decline // How spiritual maturity allows us to make our spiritual growth intentional AND still leaves plenty of room for fun and relaxation Resources: // Joanna Macy & her work // Dipa Ma & her work // Nature and the Human Soul, by Bill Plotkin // Episode 154: Off the Cushion - Activism + Spirituality // Episode 191: Soulcentric Adulthood // I’d love to hear from you! This week is a very special episode to help us continue to reduce the unnecessary suffering in our own lives - and in the lives of those we love. We’re going to talk about something we all find difficult in our relationships: the radical acceptance of other people’s shit. I’m going to share my own personal struggles with this and give you some ways that you can learn to accept how others act in a way that will bring you more compassion, love, and alignment. You will learn: // Why our loved ones often end up doing something that hurts us over and over (hint: it’s not because they’re being cruel) // Why we often get so upset and activated when dealing with the unreliability of others // How to deal with the disappointment of others that doesn’t create more suffering - for us or them Resources: // Episode 16: How to Improve Any Relationship // Episode 74: How to Set Healthy Boundaries // I’d love to hear from you! Fri, 21 Jun 2024 - 18min - 215 - Pau Hana - How to Detach From Work
This week we learn from Native Hawaiian wisdom in the concept of “pau kahana,” which means “the work is done” (most people simply say, “pau hana”). The concept of pau kahana is more than just stating a fact, like “I’m off work now.” I’ve noticed that my kanaka - Indigenous Hawaiian - friends create a very distinct separation between work and personal life. So it’s not just about stopping work, but also engaging in practices that help us release the day’s burdens and shift gears. It’s a holistic mental, physical, and spiritual detachment from work after the workday ends that also allows us to shed the day’s burdens and shift gears. We’ll explore how this Indigenous wisdom is so important in today’s modern society, where it’s so hard to unplug from the demands of a world where work is only a smartphone away. I’ll share lots of helpful ideas to start your own pau kahana practice, including clear boundaries, connection to nature, people, and play. You will learn: // How to counteract the pressures of modern industrialized society as work is increasingly enmeshed in our personal lives // What pau kahana means in Native Hawaiian culture… and how this Indigenous wisdom helps us release the day’s burdens // The physical and mental benefits of detaching from work at the end of each day // The key elements for creating our own ritual to help disengage from work Resources: // Episode 96: Unplugging in an Uncertain World // Episode 194: Work - Survival Dance or Sacred Offering // Episode 212: Privilege on the Spiritual Path // Donate to the Hawai’i People’s Fund - an excellent organization supporting Hawai’i based grassroots organizations and fighting systems of oppression // I’d love to hear from you! Fri, 14 Jun 2024 - 20min - 214 - Privilege on the Spiritual Path
This week we talk about how privilege allows us to take risks when pursuing our spiritual path and enlightenment, and how to mitigate that when we don’t have a lot of it. We also explore why privilege is not a guarantee of enlightenment - nor the lack of privilege an insurmountable barrier. I open up about my own privilege and hardships, and give some tips on how those who lack privilege can still proceed on their path with mindful, calculated risks. You will learn: // How privilege influences our journey toward enlightenment // The types of risk we can take when we have less privilege // Why privilege is not a guarantee of enlightenment - nor the lack of privilege an insurmountable barrier // The privilege to take risks - and how we can mitigate that when we have less available to us // Ways that a lack of privilege can be a catalyst for growth // How to maximize the privilege we do have Resources: // Episode 43: Jealousy and Sympathetic Joy // I’d love to hear from you! We’ll also share some tips to help navigate our edges when we come across them… and why it’s 100% worth it to get close to them in the first place. Fri, 24 May 2024 - 19min - 211 - Ripening and the Inevitability of Our Awakening
In this week’s episode, we talk about why we’re often left feeling impatient, judging that we aren’t doing “enough” on our spiritual path; needing to do things better; more quickly; more intensely. It can be hard to let go of a striving mentality so that we can actually move at the pace we’re meant to. But the reality is that with our practice, we will naturally ripen. This week we’re revisiting a classic Rebel Buddhist episode on how to set healthy boundaries. Fri, 26 Apr 2024 - 21min - 207 - The Danger of Hiding Our Suffering
In this episode, we talk about what the world - and our lives - might be like if we stopped hiding our suffering. Would it be a sh*t show? Or would our communities and society start admitting we need to take better care of our people and the more-than-human world? I’ll talk about the two things that can lead to healing and transformation and how we can all start making a change - for ourselves and those around us. You will learn: // Why we hide our suffering, even though it’s an unavoidable part of life // How hiding suffering keeps us from growing - personally and as a community // The two aspects of not hiding our suffering that can lead to healing and transformation // How to start making the change to stop hiding, for ourselves and others Resources: // Episode 63: Being Human Is Hard - The First Noble Truth // Episode 102: Start Close In // I’d love to hear from you! Fri, 19 Apr 2024 - 17min - 206 - What if This is as Good as it Gets?
In this episode we take the question of, “What if this is as good as it gets?” and explore why we are having the reactions we do to that question, and what if we allow acceptance of the way things are in order to feel more ease and joy in the present? (and explore our resistance to the concept of acceptance of reality as it is). This is not about tolerating violations of our fundamental rights and safety or basic quality of life, but rather addressing the fact that when we are constantly waiting for things to be different and striving for that because we think THAT is what will make us happy, we are ironically setting ourselves up for a lot of discontent. Striving for an external factor - a change in circumstances for happiness. You will learn: // How to look toward a future of possibilities… AND love the beauty of where we are NOW // How accepting life as it is can bring us peace - and still maintain possibility // Some signs we’re stuck in an unhealthy view of our current and potential life // How to use “what if this is as good as it gets?” as a mindfulness tool Resources: // Episode 141: The Gift of Paradox // Episode 201: How Is This My Life Right Now? // I’d love to hear from you! This week is all about “cool boredom,” and why it’s an important part of our meditation practice. It can open us up to the many skills needed on our path, including learning to not need constant ego-affirming stimuli, and the capacity to allow inner peace and self-inquiry. We’ll jam on the difference between cool and hot boredom and how each can serve its own purpose as we find a healthy balance between ecstatic experiences and simply being. The goal isn’t to live a life of cool boredom - it’s a middle way between that and ecstasy. You will learn: // Why boredom is important in our meditation practice // How boredom opens us up to many skills needed on our path // The difference between hot and cool boredom // How to find a balance between wild adventures and cool boredom Resources: // Episode 65: The Art of Doing Nothing // Episode 109: The Gift of Silence // I’d love to hear from you! Fri, 5 Apr 2024 - 31min - 204 - The Healing Power of Emptiness
In this episode, we talk about how understanding the emptiness and interdependent nature of our emotions and felt experience of energy can help us heal from shame, anxiety, rage, and more. I’ll talk about why we all struggle to see our energy as neither good nor bad, and the importance of finding community and support when we’re unable to see the potential for change in our own situation. We also dive into some practices to help us protect ourselves and also cleanse from heavier energy when it’s harder for us to see the emptiness of a situation, and how we can more effectively hold space for one another. In this episode, you will learn: // Why energy is neither inherently good or bad - and why we can still use protection and cleansing practices // How we can learn to view our own felt experience with emptiness and potential // How we can help others see their energy in this way, while protecting ourselves // Why we can’t do this work alone Resources: // Episode 24: How to Be With Any Emotion // Episode 28: Practical Emptiness // Episode 46: Letting Emotions Be Your Guide // I’d love to hear from you! Fri, 23 Feb 2024 - 21min - 198 - What it Means to be in Reciprocal Relationship
This week’s episode is all about our relationship with the more-than-human world, and the importance of not just taking from it, but also giving back. Today’s modern industrialized society encourages us to take and extract, but in doing so, we are left empty and disconnected, and the more-than-human world suffers as well. We can find a way to heal ourselves, and help restore balance, love, and respect to the world we all hold a unique and important place in. This plays out in our relationships with other people, too! You will learn: // How reciprocal relationship matters not just in our human relationships, but also with the more-than-human world // How modern industrialized society encourages humans to take and dominate… and how that’s starving the world and our spirits // Practices that help us give back // What it means when we are not experiencing reciprocity in our human relationships (hint: potentially toxic!) Fri, 16 Feb 2024 - 28min - 197 - Going Beyond Our 5 Senses
In this Episode of the Rebel Buddhist Podcast, we’re diving into our 5 senses… and beyond. The way we connect with the more-than-human world can heal ourselves and the world around us, but using only our 5 senses just scratches the surface of ways we can begin to be more present to nature - and ourselves - on a daily basis. I talk about the more subtle and energetic ways of knowing that we can cultivate to develop an authentic relationship with the natural world, and even learn to communicate with more-than-human others. As usual, I’ll be giving you some great tips to help you get started! You Will Learn: // Exercises to practice having authentic relationships and connections with more-than-human others. // How tapping into our deeper ways of knowing - more subtle than the 5 senses - can heal us and the world around us // How we can drop into our five senses in a deeper and more meaningful way to help us be more present // Ways we can connect with our more esoteric senses in nature on a daily basis // Plus… more evidence to support you haven’t totally lost it if you sense messages from the world around you Resources: // Learn more about Amos Clifford’s Nature & Forest Therapy // The Adventure Mastermind is FULL! Fri, 9 Feb 2024 - 26min - 196 - Work - Survival Dance or Sacred Offering
This week’s episode is all about our work - and what to do when it’s more of a Survival Dance than a Sacred Offering. I’ll share my own journey as I stepped into my Soul Purpose of soul midwifery and how I chose to reframe my job to keep from resenting it. Plus I’ll talk about the first step we can all take to help us begin our sacred dance: cultivating ziji - our radiant inner confidence. You will learn: // Why the survival dance is necessary for each of us, and how it helps us begin exploring our sacred dance // How self-reliance and ziji can help us power through moments of doubt and perceived failure on our journeys // Why it’s become so hard for us to find and follow our Soul Purpose in a sustainable way // Ways we can connect our survival dance to our sacred dance as we continue to explore our Soul Purpose Resources: // Episode 64: Cultivating Radiant Inner Confidence - Ziji // Episode 134: What You’re Meant to BE // Episode 178: The Gift of Wandering - Exploring Our Purpose // The Adventure Mastermind is FULL! . Fri, 2 Feb 2024 - 25min - 195 - Lessons in Trust and Interdependence - Crossing the Street in Hanoi
You will learn: // What is possible when we embrace interdependence and the fact that we are connected to everything // The gifts that taking risks by being vulnerable and trusting others can bring to us (while using discernment, of course!) // How we can find healing in interdependence and trust in one another // Why so many industrialized growth societies are so far from interdependent interbeing, and how we can offset that Resources: // We just had our bonus virtual retreat for the AMM early birds, so be sure to apply if you haven't yet, because it’s recorded and you can watch it in your pajamas AND still get the amazing January bonuses we have going on. Head over and apply at AdventureMastermind.com. I mean, this is what I got from crossing a dang street. This week we’re continuing our conversation about soulcentric adulthood by diving into the topic of soul initiation. We’ll jam on what the heck that even means and why we must first undergo a transformation and death of our old self before we can discover and step into our Soul Purpose.
