And if you have the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit of the Mokone Sisters, that passion can take you from small-time business to a booming global empire.

But make no mistake: their road to success was neither easy nor direct. It was a bumpy ride, but one they recall with humour, grace and gratitude.

Sisters Mo and Michelle Mokone share their incredible story, which started with a folded paper swan at a market stall. After a stint at international markets, a stay in Switzerland and hitting rock bottom on their return to South Africa, they hustled their way to becoming one of Africa’s largest exporters of handcrafted décor.

Today, they supply global and local retailers including Crate & Barrel, CB2, Target, Woolworths Home, @Home and Mr Price Home, while employing around 300 people, the overwhelming majority of them women.

Reaching these monumental milestones required one critical enabler: money.

One of the key challenges the sisters faced is also a key theme in Her & Now Edition 2: A World Built for Someone Else.

For the Mokone Sisters, a lack of support from formal financial institutions became apparent during their search for funding. But through research, resourcefulness and relationship-building, they secured alternative, sustainable funding — a golden takeaway for any woman looking to start or scale a business.

“Beef or oxtail bouillon cube for the stew?” can you think of a more frivolous question to answer while choosing a coffin for your mother’s funeral? Today’s guest, Nozipho Tshabalala can answer that – and how this moment illuminated her relationship with control. A relationship that began at the tender age of 5.

Imagine surviving a petrol bomb, being smuggled off to another family, having to change your name and appearance, and then trying to normalise your life.
