- 853 - The Marketing Psychology Secrets Behind the World’s Best Brands with Richard Shotton
This conversation with Richard Shotton originally aired in December of 2025. Why does social proof actually matter? What’s the psychology behind FOMO? Behavioral science legend Richard Shotton is back, and he’s dropping some of the most practical psychology-backed tactics marketers can use today. Richard and Daniel break down the biases that shape real-world buying behavior, including why social proof works far better when it’s specific and localized, AND how to make customers draw their own conclusions. You’ll also learn: - The subtle language shift between “out of stock” and “sold out” that changes irritation levels by 15% - Why humor dramatically boosts every brand metric thanks to the Halo Effect - Apple’s use of concrete language and how to make your messaging 4x more memorable If you want your Marketing to work better with zero extra budget, this conversation is for you. 6sense’s 2026 B2B Buyer Experience Report shows how buying groups make up their minds long before they ever talk to a seller, and why LLMs have far less influence on their decisions than you’d think. Fri, 06 Nov 2026 - 852 - A Marketing Channel That Deserves More Attention with Dan Robbins, Head of Brand Sponsorships at Substack | Ep. 451
What if the most underrated Marketing channel isn't a new platform, but the independent creators your audience already trusts? Dan Robbins, Head of Brand Sponsorships at Substack, has spent his career building ad businesses from scratch. He started in measurement at Nielsen, then launched ads at Roku in the early days of streaming, and later did the same at PayPal and Venmo. He even taught a course on the economics of advertising at Cornell. Now he's bringing brands like Balenciaga, Uber, T-Mobile, and Rare Beauty onto Substack. And, Dan breaks down Substack's three new sponsorship formats. Unlocks let a brand open up a paywalled post. Upgrades give readers a free month of a paid subscription, like Rare Beauty did for World Mental Health Day. The Masthead gives brands a curated destination on the Substack homepage and app without having to launch their own publication. Plus, Dan explains why launching your own brand newsletter is quietly one of the biggest mistakes brands make on the platform. His advice is to join the party where it already is instead of throwing your own. He also explains why creators should keep full creative control, and how Substack is using brand lift studies with Kantar to prove these sponsorships actually move awareness, consideration, and intent. If you're a Marketer who wants to reach audiences where trust is moving from institutions to individuals, this is the episode for you. By kickoff, sports fans already know what they’re buying. If you only show up during the game, you missed your window. Adam Marks, Sports Sales Director at SiriusXM Media, helps brands reach fans in high-attention moments AROUND the game: sports talk, podcasts, streaming, and live events. He’s a 14-year Pandora and SiriusXM vet, a proud (and lonely) Ravens fan, and once launched SiriusXM’s Masters program from his bedroom with a 103 fever. He explains why the best time to reach fans is Monday morning in the car, not Sunday on the couch. He also shares how brands without $50M for a league deal can still own an NFL season, and a story about a no-laptops brainstorm that turned one QSR into one of SiriusXM’s biggest advertisers. Tue, 20 Oct 2026 - 842 - How to Show Up in AI Without Getting Flagged by Google | Bathroom Break #130
Pumping out AI-written filler content could be quietly tanking your site. Daniel explains Google’s new spam update, which flags websites full of low-quality AI content, and why a few strong pieces with real stats beat 200 keyword articles. Jay shares Ahrefs data showing that pages not updated in a year are two times less likely to be cited by AI, and that adding schema made no difference across 1,900 pages. He also explains why listicles are the format AI pulls from most. AI search is acting like the 1995 internet right now: lazy, hungry for fresh content, and drawn to simple formats. Val got into Marketing because her writing set her apart, and she was an Unbounce customer at her last 3 companies before she ever worked there. She and Daniel get into what Google's ad quality updates mean for your landing pages, and why changing even a single word per channel can pay off more than a full rebuild would. Tue, 13 Oct 2026 - 838 - Content Formats That Work Right Now | Bathroom Break #129
From now through January, four words decide whether people open your email: outlook, trends, prediction and forecast. Jay explains why everyone wants to know what’s coming and why these words belong in every subject line, webinar title and offer right now. He also shares the content format that pairs with them: an AI-built 2027 calendar for your industry, gated to grow your list, which sees over a 75% lift from October through January. Daniel adds year-end roundups of your best content and your own 2027 predictions. Then they get into the AI tools they actually use. Daniel quietly had Lovable reverse engineer a prompt so he could rebuild a website section in Claude. Jay swears by Wispr Flow for dictation and Gamma for building decks in seconds. This engineer-turned-Marketer spent 13 years building the Marketing effectiveness practice at Mars before bringing his measurement obsession to PepsiCo. He also literally wrote the book on it.He and Daniel get into why measurement should never start with your data (what??) and what testing hundreds of ads on real brains will reveal about your creative. Wed, 07 Oct 2026 - 835 - LinkedIn, Instagram & Subject Line Tactics That Are Working In Q4 | Bathroom Break #128
Q4 inboxes and feeds are about to get crowded, and last quarter's tactics might not be enough to stand out. Jay and Daniel trade the subject line plays they're betting on right now. Daniel puts a specific number like 7, 5, or 8 (never a round 10) at the front of his subject lines, and he mixes lowercase with a single all-caps word. Jay capitalizes the entire first word, like NEW, and opens with the offer in brackets. He also moves emojis to the middle or end of the subject line, or bookends them in the preheader, because a leading emoji causes problems for screen readers. They also break down LinkedIn's new collaborative posts, which push one post into up to five feeds (including company pages) without counting as sponsored. Then they get into why Instagram's new AI agents in Edits are worth using now but could turn everyone's feed into a wall of sameness later. Daniel's workaround is to test new hooks with trial reels so they reach non-followers first. The bigger lesson is that when a platform launches a new feature, you should lean in early, because that's when it gets the most distribution. If you're a Marketer who wants more opens and more reach heading into Q4, this is the episode for YOU. How do you get an entire Super Bowl stadium to sing along to your ad? Peter Giorgi, SVP, Creative Excellence and Brand Experience at Rocket, figured it out...2 weeks before kickoff. After his time at Airbnb and the agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky, Peter helped Rocket stop selling mortgage rates and start selling homeownership, and he and Daniel get into why that idea was just sitting there for the taking in the first place. Plus, a live TV risk that could have fallen completely flat, what happened when Rocket listed an NBA arena on Redfin (and a tornado rolled in), and why a great ad doesn't need a blockbuster budget. Wed, 30 Sep 2026 - 832 - Use Prediction Markets to Plan Your 2027 Content | Bathroom Break #127
Marketers are quietly sleeping on one of the biggest data sets out there: prediction markets. Jay explains how Kalshi and Polymarket work like a giant survey on almost any topic, except people are putting real money behind their answers, which makes the results unusually accurate. He also shares the exact prompt to use in ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. Tell it your audience, have it search Kalshi and Polymarket for five active, non-political, non-sports markets that signal what that audience will care about in the next 3 to 12 months, then ask for content ideas. He also explains why you should never try to dig through those sites yourself. Daniel explains why now is the perfect time to publish forward-looking 2027 content, and how prediction data lets you pair thought leadership with real numbers you can link out to. The bigger idea is that surveys capture what people say, while money shows what they actually think, so always follow the money. Fri, 25 Sep 2026 - 830 - How To Nail Local Marketing with with Jena Wolfe, VP of Marketing at Goop Kitchen | Ep. 445
How do you take a brand born in LA and make New Yorkers feel like it was made just for them? Jena Wolfe, VP of Marketing at Goop Kitchen (https://www.goopkitchen.com), has figured it out. Jena started out writing restaurant listings for a New York magazine, spent almost 15 years running her own creative agencies, and is now Goop Kitchen's first-ever VP of Marketing (and her first time on the brand side). Since joining, she's taken the brand from California to New York and opened its very first dine-in location in Del Mar. Daniel and Jena talk about how Goop Kitchen decides what's sacred to the brand, why the menu didn't change one bit for New York, and why the launch campaign cast local icons like the New York Liberty's Jonquel Jones and PR legend Kelly Cutrone instead of chasing the most famous names in the city. Plus, how to pick your moments with a celebrity founder like Gwyneth Paltrow, what changes when a delivery-first brand finally gets a physical space, and the one lesson about local Marketing Jena wishes she'd learned sooner. And her Marketing hill to die on? Take the big, scary swings...because when they pay off, they REALLY pay off. He ran Marketing for over a decade at giants like Coca-Cola and Sky, then set out to rebuild the broken Martech stack from scratch. Wed, 16 Sep 2026 - 826 - How AI Is Changing Email, Part 2 | Bathroom Break #125
AI summaries pull an average of just 29 words from your email, so every word in that window counts. Jay's formula for the first 150 to 200 characters is action plus product plus deadline, things like "Shop 40% off all Nike running shoes through Sunday at midnight" or "Register for the 2027 HR compliance briefing by Friday," and testing it is driving a 19% increase in click through rates. Bullet points matter even more: bulleted content gets pulled into AI summaries 77% of the time in Gmail, 84% in Apple Mail, and 92% in Microsoft Copilot. Daniel argues Marketing headlines need to evolve too, since vague hooks like "this is crazy" lose their punch once AI strips away the context. He and Jay also unpack a MediaPost survey showing over 70% of people are comfortable with AI scanning their inbox for deals and recommendations, though Daniel notes businesses are far warier about AI reading emails with internal strategy. The bigger idea: email Marketing is being rebuilt around what AI can actually read, and the prettiest template loses if it's not structured to get pulled into a summary. If you want the exact formulas and formatting Marketers are using to win in AI summaries right now, this is the episode for you. Fri, 11 Sep 2026 - 824 - The 6-Step Framework for Naming Anything with Katie Miserany, Global Head of Marketing at SurveyMonkey | Ep. 443
How do you land on a name when you're staring down fifty thousand options, and none of them feel right? Katie Miserany, Chief Communications Officer and Global Head of Marketing at SurveyMonkey, just led the naming and go-to-market for Launchpad, SurveyMonkey's new suite of market research tools built for Marketers with zero research background. Katie joined the company on the communications side, worked her way up to Chief of Staff, and took over the newly combined Marketing and Communications function about a year ago. And, Katie breaks down the six-step framework her team used to name Launchpad, why they started with a brief instead of a brainstorm, and how deciding who the product was NOT for (professional researchers who could build it themselves in SurveyMonkey) sharpened the name, the positioning, and the entire go-to-market. She also walks through how the internal debate between "SurveyMonkey Launch" and "SurveyMonkey Methods" got settled, not by whoever had the loudest opinion in the room, but by 4,500 survey responses. Plus, Katie tells the story of SurveyMonkey's 2021 rebrand attempt, when the company tried to shake its "silly" name to look more enterprise ready, and why the new CEO reversed that decision in 2023 and leaned back into the brand equity everyone already knew. Her take: with buyers asking ChatGPT and Claude about you before they ever search your name, brand and storytelling matter more now, not less. If you're a Marketer who's tired of guessing whether your next name, headline, or campaign will land, this is the episode for YOU. Wed, 09 Sep 2026 - 823 - How AI is Changing Email | Bathroom Break #124
AI is already reading your emails before your subscribers do, and if you're not writing for it, your message might not make it to the inbox at all. Jay breaks down "live text," the actual HTML text in your email that AI tools like Gmail summaries and Microsoft Copilot scan to build inbox previews and rewrite preheaders. Copilot alone just hit 30 million paid users, up 10 million in a single month, so this isn't a niche problem. Jay's rule: the first 150 characters of your email need to carry your most important, most specific information (webinar details, offer terms, whatever the ask is) because that's the window AI summaries pull from. Images and JPEGs don't count, and alt text doesn't count as live text either, no matter what you've been told. He predicts that within six months, half of all preheaders will be AI generated instead of whatever Marketers actually wrote. Daniel adds that the preheader isn't dead, it's just unreliable now. His fix: write your opening body copy so it echoes what you'd want the preheader to say, so if AI does pull from it, the message still lands the way you intended. He also flags that this isn't just an email problem. The same summarization behavior is starting to show up in text messages, and Marketers need to start thinking about how their SMS gets condensed too. The bigger idea: the prettiest, most designed email templates are losing right now. If AI can't read the words inside your design, it doesn't matter how good it looks. Email Marketing is quietly reverting to a text-first format, closer to how it worked 10 to 15 years ago. If you want your emails to survive the next wave of inbox AI, this is the episode for you. Daniel sits down with a panel that's seen every side of the deal: Sam Kilgore of Sponsor United, Marquise Watts (Who's worked with Under Armor, Adidas, & the Minnesota Timberwolves), Chris Lobono of Athlete Driven Worldwide, and Elliot Christiansen of Cleveland Construction. They get into why "the logo slap" is dying and what's replacing it, how brands move at the speed of culture (see Levi's cutout logo and the Heinz tape at the World Cup), and the real way to measure ROI when only 28% of fans can name a jersey patch. Did you notice? The copy-paste era just ended. Jay and Daniel break down the "AI watch out era": Claude and ChatGPT are now baking watermarks into the text and images they generate, so your AI content can get spotted the second it goes live. Also: why this might actually be good news if you can make original work, why Claude just became a 1st-draft tool instead of a shortcut, and the Canva and screenshot moves Jay swears are still sailing past the detectors. (Plus beignet-related powdered sugar chaos and a cautionary tale about boarding a flight without your travel buddy.)If you're a Marketer who wants to keep using AI without getting dinged for it, this episode is for YOU.Follow Jay:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/schwedelson/Podcast: Do This, Not That Follow Daniel:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@themarketingmillennials/featuredTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/Dmurr68LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/daniel-murray-marketing Sign up for The Marketing Millennials newsletter: https://themarketingmillennials.com/ Daniel is a Workweek friend, working to produce amazing podcasts. Andrew LeRay, Director of Brand Marketing at NWSL, is trying to close the gap between people who instantly recognize those four letters and people who still ask what they stand for.He breaks down where building a brand for a sports league is different than building 1 for a product, how the players become the brand, and how a Call Her Daddy cameo and a hydration partnership with Alex Cooper's Unwell became one of the league's biggest growth unlocks.Plus what changes when you go from a 150-year legacy brand like MLB to a self-described challenger brand only 3 years into its current era, and the Marketing hill Andrew will die on.If you're a Marketer who wants to build something people actually recognize, this episode is for YOU.Hit follow and drop us a rating if this one lands. What if your whole Marketing plan was really just 1 big math problem?Amanda Cole, CMO at Bloomreach, breaks down pipeline math: how to start with a revenue number and work backwards to the win rate, budget, and headcount that'll get you there.Plus, why she plans off median win rate instead of the average, and why she splits targets when a vertical converts seven points lower than the core. She and Daniel also get into how pipeline math turns a tense sales negotiation into a calm one. (Want 10x coverage? Here's what it costs you in reps you can't hire.)Finally, she makes the case that briefs don't matter anymore, why she handed her CEO direct access to the data and stopped writing reports (including the AI stack behind it all).If you're a Marketer who wants to tie every dollar you spend back to revenue, this episode is for YOU.Hit follow and drop us a rating if this one lands. Mon, 10 Aug 2026 - 810 - What Actually Makes a Good Email with Naomi West, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Customer.io
Email isn’t dead. But most Marketers are measuring it the wrong way. Daniel sits down with Naomi West, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Customer.io, to break down what actually makes a “good” email and why beautiful design, open rates, and fancy templates aren’t the metrics you should be obsessing over. From why web design trends fall apart inside the inbox, to why text-based emails often outperform heavily designed ones, Naomi unpacks the myths that are holding email marketers back. They also dive into lifecycle strategy, event-triggered emails, working with engineers, testing frameworks that actually produce statistically significant results, and why communication skills might matter more than any tool you use. If you’re an email marketer who wants to move beyond templates and start driving real engagement and conversions, this is the episode for YOU. Fri, 07 Aug 2026 - 809 - MIT's Social Media Playbook, with Jenny Fowler, Director of Social Media Strategy @ MIT | Ep. 438
Every school is on social media. Almost none of them have built anything like what MIT has. Daniel sits down with Jenny Fowler, Director of Social Media Strategy at MIT and author of a book on organic social media, to break down the playbook behind growing the university's following to more than 7 million people across platforms, entirely organic, in a category most brands would consider one of the hardest to win. Jenny walks through her six M framework (mission, message, medium, management, metrics, monitoring) and why "medium," picking the one platform you can actually dominate, is the piece most brands skip first. She also explains why she refuses to chase algorithm changes, staying the course on strategy even when the numbers dip, because reacting to every shift means the algorithm never actually learns your audience. Plus, Jenny breaks down her "dream team" structure for a social department (a director, a manager, and specialist creators instead of platform experts), why social needs to sit at director or VP level to survive internal pressure, and how she stress tests every post for how it could get misread or trolled before it ever goes live. Fri, 24 Jul 2026 - 803 - Deep Dive Into Franchise Marketing, with Lindsey McFadden, CMO of Stretch Zone | Ep. 434
Most brands would kill for the loyalty Stretch Zone gets from members who show up two or three times a week…and it all started with a category that didn't exist yet. Daniel sits down with Lindsey McFadden, CMO of Stretch Zone, to break down how she grew the brand from 60 locations to 425, with zero closures, ever. Lindsey walks through why "your first stretch is free" became the backbone of the entire acquisition strategy, and how you educate a market into a habit that didn't exist before you built it. Lindsey shares how Stretch Zone keeps hundreds of franchise owners rowing in the same direction with playbooks so simple she calls them "Fisher Price easy," one page campaign briefs, and a real estate team that heat maps every territory before a franchise agreement is ever signed. Plus, Lindsey explains why AI front desk agents are quietly failing her franchisees (one generated an ad with a leg bent completely backwards), and why her Marketing hill to die on is simple: AI's not gonna run your business for you. Wed, 22 Jul 2026 - 802 - Subject Line Tips That Are Working | Bathroom Break #117
Your subject lines might be too clean, too correct, and too polished to actually get opened. Jay and Daniel go through their favorite subject line tactics, and most of them break every "best practice" rule you've ever heard. Daniel swears by emojis, unfinished sentences that trail off with ellipses, and odd numbers like 7, 9, or 13 instead of round ones. He also calls out his audience directly in the subject line ("For Marketers who...") and says it crushes every time he uses it. Jay counters with what he calls "un-AI" subject lines: intentionally long subject lines (100+ characters) that fill the whole line and get cut off on purpose, ellipses at the start of a subject line instead of the end (a 15% lift in open rates), and skipping capitalization entirely. His logic: if AI would never suggest it, it probably stands out. They also get into serialized numbering (numbering your newsletter editions so people notice when they miss one and go back to read it) and "vault content," repackaging your best existing content as a locked offer people have to unlock. The bigger idea: the goal isn't to write a "correct" subject line, it's to write one that doesn't look like everyone else's. If it looks like AI could've written it, it probably won't get opened. If you want subject line tactics that actually move open rates instead of just following best practices, this is the episode for YOU. So how do you dial up your human-ness…and build trust in the process? Phil and Daniel talk about why people trust people and not brands, how to turn your own team into your highest-performing Marketing channel, and the 1 metric he says matters most even though you can't actually measure it. His strategy: deliberately pumping the brakes on Marketing so the brand wouldn't blow up before it could actually deliver. Wed, 15 Jul 2026 - 799 - Are You Measuring These Email Metrics? | Bathroom Break #116
Most of what you're measuring in email Marketing is noise, and the signals that actually predict pipeline are hiding in places you're probably not even looking. Daniel breaks down why every email needs a honeypot link, an invisible link that only bots click, so you can strip out fake engagement before you ever look at your real numbers. He also makes the case for tracking every CTA separately, since the people who click a button at the bottom of an email are reading more of it and often move faster to pipeline than people who click the first thing at the top. He also talks about using AI to track reply rates and pull specific language out of replies to build first party data, and points out that replies quietly boost your email deliverability too. Jay adds a list of intent signals most teams ignore completely: an emoji reaction during a webinar, any interaction with a chatbot no matter what someone types, and more than 10 seconds spent on a pricing page. He says shoppers who click a bottom CTA show a noticeably higher lifetime value, and that these small, easy to miss actions should put someone on a VIP list because they predict who actually buys faster than a standard open or click ever will. The bigger idea here is a shift from counting activity to counting intent. Opens and clicks only tell you someone showed up. Replies, chatbot use, and CTA position tell you who is actually paying attention and close to buying. If you're a Marketer who is done guessing which leads are real, this is the episode for you. Alex Rynne has spent 10 years inside LinkedIn as a Senior Content Marketing Manager. She and Daniel talk about what's working on the platform in 2026, why most B2B brands are boring when they don't have to be, and why the "post just to post" habit is drowning everyone in a sea of sameness. Plus: the content format Alex ranks #1 (it's probably not the one you post most), the 20/80 rule her team swears by, and the LinkedIn move that quietly turned her side videos into top converters. Kelly Cheng, CMO at Goldcast, joins Daniel to talk trust, mind share, and how B2B Marketing can break through when the internet is drowning in AI slop. In a feed full of AI avatars and synthetic everything, the stuff that actually earns trust is the stuff AI can't manufacture. What breaks through in a feed full of AI content, and how do you scale it without turning into slop yourself? Kelly and Daniel get into why buyers' shortlists are shrinking even as their options explode, the one thing AI still can't fake (hint: it starts with a T), and the "lazy Marketer" trap that's quietly wrecking teams. Wed, 08 Jul 2026 - 796 - A Marketing Metric You Need To Track | Bathroom Break #115
If you're making budget decisions based on how each channel looks on its own, you're working with an incomplete picture. Daniel breaks down why blended CAC should be the number your whole operation runs against. Blended CAC is your total marketing spend divided by total customers acquired across every channel. It gives you room to invest in longer-term channels without panicking when one silo looks off, and it stops you from killing channels that are quietly lifting conversions everywhere else. Jay admits he runs everything in silos, channel by channel, and uses that to shift budget toward whatever's performing. Daniel pushes back: you need both. The blended number is your north star. The silos are your diagnostic tool. When blended CAC starts creeping up, that's when you go channel by channel to figure out what's wrong. The bigger idea: attribution will always make some channels look better than they are. Blended CAC cuts through that and shows you the real cost of growing your business. If you want a smarter way to manage your Marketing budget, this is the episode for YOU. Mon, 06 Jul 2026 - 795 - The Formula for Standing Out in the Age of Infinite Content, with Debbie Millman & Christina Bottis | Ep. 430
When AI can spit out infinite content for free, is yelling into the void actually a losing game? In this LIVE panel, Daniel sits down with two experienced Marketers with strong opinions about what to do. Debbie Millman is a designer, author, and educator who founded the world's first ever Master's program in Branding at SVA. She's also hosted the podcast Design Matters for 21 years and is a Harvard Fellow. Christina Bottis is a CMO with 20+ years in B2B Marketing who has built brand at pretty much every size and stage of company. In this episode, taped live, they get into what "breaking through" actually means, because it’s not volume. It's A+ content, real consistency, and a strategy that makes you behave differently from your competitors (not just a fancier plan). Debbie also talks about brand as "manufactured meaning" and why our reptilian brains are wired to hate every rebrand on sight. Plus the big 1: when everyone can generate everything, what's the new scarce resource? The panel makes the case for taste, ingenuity, and originality, and why the Marketer who keeps building real fundamentals (instead of outsourcing them all to AI) becomes the most valuable person in the room. Also in this episode is a script for how to defend the value of brand - from showing short AND long-term wins, to moving fast without skipping your ICP foundations, and why your audience wants to hear from the real people behind the brand, not the brand itself. If you're a Marketer who wants to learn how to build a brand that cuts through in the AI era, this is the episode for YOU. Fri, 03 Jul 2026 - 794 - Why Marketing Needs To Own Market Research With Molly Strawn-Carreño, Director of Brand Growth at AYTM | Ep. 429
What if your most "customer-obsessed Marketing” is built on stuff your customers don't actually do? Molly Strawn-Carreño is Director of Brand Growth at AYTM, and she's spent years getting researchers and Marketers to finally speak the same language. She sits down with Daniel to break down what real market research looks like now that AI is in every Marketer's toolkit. They dig into the “Say-Do Gap,” aka the canyon between what people tell you (like in a survey) vs what they actually purchase (like, organic strawberries for the kids, very much NOT-organic broccoli for the husband). Molly shares how to word your questions so people give you the truth instead of an aspirational highlight reel. Plus she calls out exactly where AI earns its keep in research (chewing through mountains of historic data, narrowing 50 options down to 3) and where AI face-plants (predicting the next weird trend, because no model saw tinned fish charcuterie boards coming). And she lays out the Marketing hill she'll die on: Marketing and sales have to work together, and good Marketers own the entire customer lifecycle, not just the second a lead converts. Wed, 01 Jul 2026 - 793 - The AI Prompts That Actually Move the Needle | Bathroom Break #114
Most Marketers are using AI to generate. The ones winning right now are using it to interrogate. Jay breaks down a two-minute tactic he's been running with clients: go to all five major LLMs (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, and Grok) and ask each one for the top 50 questions people are asking about your product or service. Then cross-reference the outputs to find what shows up on every platform. Those overlapping questions are your go-to-market. Your blog titles, your podcast topics, your offer angles, your webinar hooks — all of it, handed to you by the market itself. Daniel adds his own layer: before you let AI anywhere near your copy, write it yourself first. Then feed it in and ask AI to critique it through the lens of the greatest copywriters and strategists who ever lived. What would the legends say about your hook? Your offer? Your opening line? That's how you use AI as a refinement partner instead of a crutch — and the difference in output is night and day. The bigger idea: AI isn't the shortcut most Marketers think it is. Used right, it's the smartest pressure test in the room. If you want AI prompts that actually change what you ship, this is the episode for YOU. What does it take to market a restaurant that tells its guests there's nothing to see here? Milo Frank, Senior Director of Marketing at H Wood Group, has spent over a decade building one of the most recognizable hospitality brands in the country, home to Delilah, The Nice Guy, and a whole lot of surprises no one saw coming. And Milo breaks down how H Wood approaches launching in a new market, from scouting 15 to 20 venues in 48 hours to identifying the right local crowd before a single door opens. Wed, 24 Jun 2026 - 790 - SPECIAL SERIES: How to Avoid AI Slop in Brand Creative with Michael Horton, Co-Founder of Slate & Adam Creeger, CTO at Slate
Everyone's talking about AI slop. But is it really an AI problem, or is it a tool problem? Adam Creeger, CTO at Slate, and Michael Horton, co-founder and CEO, have seen this from every angle, from Meta's video feed to the social media managers creating content on the fly for major brands. And their take is refreshingly honest: most tools right now just aren't built for professionals who actually care about quality. And they break down the 80/20 framework for AI content creation, why AI should handle the tedious 80% so you can spend more time perfecting the last 20% that actually makes content stand out. Plus, why brand guardrails in AI aren't about limiting creativity, they're more like a GPS that lets you take the scenic route and still find your way back. If you're a Marketer who wants to use AI to create better content without sacrificing your brand voice, this is the episode for you. Tue, 23 Jun 2026 - 789 - Your Email Marketing Metrics Are Lying | Bathroom Break #113
If you're making Marketing decisions based on your email open rates and click numbers, you might be working with completely made up data. Jay and Daniel break down the bot problem that's quietly inflating every metric in your ESP, and why those garbage scores are exactly why your BDRs and SDRs hate the leads they're getting. Daniel explains why his newsletter uses a honeypot link at the top just to measure how much bot activity is happening, and why clicks should never be the end goal anyway. They also make the case for zero click content and no agenda Marketing: giving your audience real value without asking for anything in return, so when they are finally ready to buy, you are the first brand they think of. Mon, 22 Jun 2026 - 788 - How AI is Changing SEO with Mike Witham, Head of Search at 97th Floor | Ep. 426
Don’t listen to everything you hear…in the AI age, SEO is NOT dead. It’s just expanding. Guest Mike Witham of 97th Floor Agency breaks down what it all means. Some people thought AI would kill SEO, but the truth is that SEO isn’t going anywhere. We just have to learn how to partner with AI to optimize search, especially when it comes to showing up in AI summaries. Marketers have to adapt to new search rules, plus AEO and GEO capabilities. What’s the difference between using AI and using a search engine to find information? The key is keywords: while people are searching via AI in an experimental way, SEO thrives on keywords. You have to make sure you’re optimizing for that to drive traffic. Should you ask AI for sources? And if you do, will it provide credible ones? Plus, we’re in the age of chatbots and relevancy. What are some good tools to make sure your chatbots are not only giving relevant information, but accurate information, too? If you’re looking to level up your SEO knowledge and anticipate what’s going on with AI, AEO/GEO, this is the episode for YOU. What if the best AI tools in the world still can't replace a great Marketer? Reza, Co-founder and CEO of Motion, has spent over a decade at the intersection of creative and performance Marketing, and his take on AI is one you don't hear enough: the goal isn't to let AI find your edge. It's to eliminate the tech advantage so the best Marketers win. And, he breaks down how Motion is building AI infrastructure that does all the heavy lifting behind the scenes, from pre-watching thousands of ad creatives to giving every customer their own dedicated virtual machine, so Marketers can stop tinkering with tools and get back to the thing that actually drives results. Plus, Reza explains why the creative strategist role is quietly becoming the most important role in Marketing, and how the best ones aren't just running ads…they're influencing the direction of the entire business. Are you leaving conversions on the table by playing it too safe with email? Jay makes the case for sending two emails in a single day - he backs it up with data showing conversion and sign up rates jump over 35% when you pair an urgency send in the morning with a scarcity send in the afternoon or evening. Daniel adds why text message reminders are a massively underused tool for getting people to actually show up, and why the right people staying on your list matters way more than keeping your unsubscribe rate pretty. They also get into one of the most important mindset shifts in Marketing: your audience is not paying as much attention to you as you think. You already have VIPs in your database. You're just not treating them that way. Jay and Daniel break down the segments most Marketers completely overlook, and why the people already showing high-intent signals are often more valuable than the customers you already closed. Jay lays out the behaviors that should automatically flag someone as a VIP: repeat website visits, multiple email clicks, product video views. None of that is accidental, and none of it should be treated like a regular contact. Daniel makes the case for pain point segmentation and why lifetime value of your audience deserves just as much attention as lifetime value of your customers. Patagonia isn’t just scaling mountains. They’re scaling through affiliate strategy. This episode’s guest, Cricket Treanor, went from the sales floor to HQ’s Affiliate Marketing and Ecom team. When it comes to partnerships, they’re thinking outside the box: cash back with Rakuten, listicles of the “best jackets”, and speaking out about social issues, to name a few. What should you do as a brand when you don’t lean heavily into loyalty and deals? And, Cricket debunks some misconceptions about the affiliate space. It’s more than just loyalty, it’s actually about brand awareness. Affiliates aren’t taking sales away from other channels. Where do they fit into the marketing funnel? Plus, Patagonia is more than just selling products, they’re aiming to bring environmental awareness and sustainability efforts to their audience. How does the buy-back program contribute to Marketing strategy? In a world of overconsumption, how do you get customers excited about new products when overconsumption contradicts the brand mission? Most insurance brands look the same, sound the same, and spend billions on ads to prove it. Amica decided to do the opposite. Daniel sits down with Tory Pachis (Executive Vice President & CMO of Amica Insurance) to break down how a 119-year-old, referral-only mutual insurer went from 2% unaided brand awareness to 70%…and why a jersey patch on the Boston Celtics was just the beginning. Tory shares how Amica built a sports marketing strategy around values alignment, not logo slaps, and why the Jason Tatum "Back to Zero" campaign became one of the most authentic brand stories in insurance. They get into why humor isn't the only tool in the insurance advertising toolbox, how to make the case for brand investment to a skeptical CFO, and what happens when your star athlete tears his Achilles the night after you sign the deal. They also dig into how Amica is thinking about AI and LLMs, and why a loyal customer base full of organic Reddit and Trustpilot reviews might be their biggest unfair advantage as search evolves. Daniel explains why consistency beats timing every time, and why skipping one holiday post is how the skipping habit starts. They also get into what is happening with the LinkedIn algorithm right now, why posts are taking 24 to 48 hours to pick up steam, and why that actually works in your favor when everyone else goes quiet on a holiday. Fri, 22 May 2026 - 772 - The Truth About Your ICP with Hailey McDonald, VP of Revenue Marketing at Sprout Social | Ep. 417
Does everyone on your revenue team actually agree on who your ideal customer is? Daniel sits down with Hailey McDonald, the new VP of Revenue Marketing at Sprout Social, on day one of her new role. They get into one of the most expensive mistakes in B2B Marketing: building campaigns before your ICP is truly locked in across every team. Hailey breaks down why most companies are doing ABM in name only, how to tell within five minutes that a team's ICP is broken, and why getting Marketing, sales, CS, and rev ops aligned on a single definition is the foundation everything else is built on. She also explains the difference between ICP and total addressable market, and how pipeline hitting while revenue misses is one of the clearest signals something is off with your targeting. Daniel makes the case that personalization at scale is really just personality at scale, and why the brands that stay consistent with their messaging even under pressure are the ones that win long term. Plus, Hailey's marketing hill she would die on: you can't have demand without brand. If you’re looking to actually understand and identify who your audience is, this episode is for you. If you’re only using one AI tool, you’re already behind. Jay and Daniel break down how Marketers should actually be using AI right now and why relying on just ChatGPT isn’t enough anymore. They dive into new capabilities across platforms, including ChatGPT’s updated image generation, and why Claude’s “skills” feature can save hours by acting like a reusable prompt system for your brand voice, paid media, and more. They also explain how different tools dominate in different areas, from Gemini’s deep integration with Google Ads and Workspace to Claude’s superior writing and connectors. Most marketers track clicks…but almost nobody is using them correctly. Jay and Daniel break down how to turn click data into one of the most powerful tools in your marketing stack. From building high-intent audiences to improving segmentation, they explain why clicks should be treated as a signal, not just a metric. While everyone fights over Meta and Google…smart brands are going offline. In this episode, Daniel sits down with Olivia Oshry, CMO of the Out of Home Advertising Association of America (OAAA), to break down why billboards, out-of-home, and real-world media are booming again and why most brands are still underutilizing them. Olivia shares her journey from digital-first companies like AOL to betting big on out-of-home, and explains why the pendulum is swinging away from pure performance marketing toward a more balanced, brand-first strategy. They dive into why out-of-home works so well in today’s AI-driven, hyper-digital world and why she calls it “the human medium.” They also unpack why attention matters more than impressions, how Gen Z discovers brands differently, and why great creative (not just spend)is what separates campaigns that get ignored from ones that go viral.
