The crisis in the Middle East, like so many issues that truly matter, is complicated and nuanced and simply won’t fit on a bumper sticker. It’s essential that we look at the whole picture and move beyond who needs to be punished (and many do) to set a goal of creating a place of peace and stability. This is also not an isolated issue. Governments around the world are shifting to the far right and supporting each other as they do it. So, whether it’s Putin, Netanyahu, Hamas or Trump, they’re all looking out for number one, and we need to be supporting alternatives who want everyone to succeed, not simply the select few. At the end of the day we need to hold two ideas in our heads at once. Palestinian people deserve a state of their own, without Israeli occupation, and Israel deserves to exist in safety and security in the midst of a hostile region. It’s an incredibly difficult needle to thread, but a peaceful coexistence is what anyone who believes in the rights of humanity should want. Presidential third parties are deceiving the public. They claim to offer a choice, but what they’re offering is an illusion. The majority of youth in America are not on board for the new extremist Republican agenda. They believe in reproductive rights, and that the climate is in crisis. In honor of Labor Day we’re going to talk about the importance of the American worker, but more specifically about the importance of union work. American workers have clearly had enough. The majority of us know we can’t carry on like this. That the wealth inequality and the growing chasm between workers and owners is leading this country down a dark path. At their peak, 40% of American workers were part of a union, now that number is under 7%, and look what’s happened - the rich got richer while the poor got poorer and the middle class has all but disappeared. People can’t afford homes, food or health care, and the majority of us have to take a side hustle or gig work on top of our regular jobs just to make ends meet. It’s unsustainable, and the workers of America are beginning to stand in solidarity against it. We know the conservative movement wants to return us to “a better time”, what they see as the “natural order”, with the white, straight Christian man on top, but even those who see themselves as liberal or centrist can struggle with the idea of changing the status quo, because it feels like a potential losing proposition for people who have always been at the top. That people who would be outwardly opposed to MAGA still feel uncomfortable with all these calls for equality and respect, especially when it’s perceived to question their judgment, or status in society. Nostalgia is a powerful part of the human condition, and it can easily become the filter through which every political, social, and cultural piece of information is absorbed. So if a political movement offers to bring back what has supposedly been lost, or at least keep us at status quo, it’s hard to resist because it speaks directly to the anxieties people have around the social and cultural change America has been undergoing over the past century. Christian nationalists believe that America is defined by Christianity, and the government should be taking active steps to keep it that way. This is completely antithetical to how our nation was actually set up, but they now have their hands in so many pots - from education, to voting, to human rights - and are backed by such an large amount of dark money, with seemingly endless connections, that the bottom line is if we don’t wake up to the danger of this movement, which in many ways runs parallel with the white nationalist moment and, these days MAGA Republicans, then we’re going to wake up in the near future to realized we live in some version of a Christian autocratic theocracy where our laws, lifestyles, even our morality is dictated by a select few, and the only choices we’ll have left will be conform or suffer. A couple weeks ago we did a pod on Florida and the chaos DeSantis is inflicting on his state. So today we’re doing a counter piece on what a state looks like when a government works for, and listens to, it’s people, and, as far as I’m concerned, there’s no state that balances the scales better with Florida than Michigan. While Florida is all top down government control, Michigan has dedicated itself to listening to, and honoring the will of the voters. So today we’re going to talk about Michigan. To give you a sense of what’s possible when government reflects what the people, and not just what the government, wants. As Salon magazine recently wrote, “Michigan offers us real hope. A roadmap back to democracy and common sense”. It’s hard not to be cynical about American politics and the American experiment with all that’s going on, but the truth of the matter is we have tremendous leadership right now. The country is doing extremely well. Legislation that became law over the past two years is set to become tangible reality in the next two. Yes, we are looking at an increasingly undemocratic Republican Party who can’t even compromise with itself long enough to get their speaker elected, but we’re also looking at competent, fresh new leadership to counter them, along with new factories, new jobs, new infrastructure. We’re looking at lower drug prices and major corporations paying taxes for the first time. We’re going to have universal broadband for all our citizens, gun legislation and climate protections. Marc is an American Democratic Party elections lawyer who served as general counsel for the Hillary Clinton and John Kerry presidential campaigns, and is the founder of the Elias Law Group who oversaw the state by state response to the 60+ Trump campaign lawsuits contesting the 2020 presidential election, where he won all but one minor case, which was later overturned in his favor. Ron Klain joins us for the post-midterm wrap up. Though not all the results are in, we do know that Democrats will hold the Senate, no election deniers will be in charge of elections, that Democrats have gained governorships and made headway in state houses and the power of hate and division might be on the wain. However, it shakes out, the midterms were a good day for democracy. We might be in for a contentious 2 years, but then again, aren’t we used to that by now? The bottom line is people took this election as their opportunity to register their distaste for extremism, election denialism and political violence. They came out to vote for human rights and bodily autonomy and a properly functioning government. If the country is sick, these elections feels a bit like a fever break. Are we out of the woods? Today’s episode is the last in the series of Candidate Conversations leading up to the midterms, where we talk to candidates who might not be getting the attention they need but have a real chance of winning with the right amount of attention. Today’s we talk to two amazing Democratic candidates for Attorney General, Jen Jordan for Georgia and Rochelle Garza for Texas. The Attorney General is the state’s top prosecutor meant to represent the public interest at the state level. An AG has the power to hold politicians accountable, to promote justice and equality and to protect our democracy. This is not a job that should go to just anyone. It certainly isn’t a job that should go to criminals and party shills, which is exactly who these women are running against. The difference between Jen & Rochelle and their opponents is the difference between women with rights and women without rights, the difference between votes that count and votes that don’t count, and the difference between the law that looks out for the people, and the the law that protects the powerful. AG is a position you should know, and these are candidates you should know about. Electing these women would make such a tremendous difference to the state, but also to the rule of law across the nation. The newest way Republicans are trying to undermine the electorate is to trick them into voting for someone who presents themselves as one thing but is actually another. Rick Caruso is that candidate, a lifelong Republican billionaire who switched his party affiliation to Democrat just 3 weeks before declaring his candidacy for mayor. He’s already spent $60 million dollars of his own money trying to buy his way into the job. This is something as an electorate we should not only be aware of, but watch out for in other places. When we last had Teri Kanefield on the show she was reminding us that just because we weren’t seeing the results we wanted didn’t mean the wheels of justice weren’t turning. People wanted so badly for the DOJ to tell us they were investigating Trump, for Trump to be arrested, for RESULTS, but Teri has always believed that the fact that we were seeing so little, was good news for the health of the rule of law. She’s always stressed how important it is to not rush the process or abandon the rules simply because we wanted to. That one party has made it very clear they’re ready to abandon democracy and the rule of law and Teri has been equally clear we shouldn’t help them do that by abandoning the rule of law ourselves. 5 months later, after the search of Mar-a-lago we can see she was right when so many others were wrong. Want to understand what’s going on right now? As our guest David Bender points out “It’s hard to watch the 1/6 hearings because it’s like looking directly into the sun. It hurts.” You can’t believe the President of the United States, the man who held the same office as Washington, Lincoln, JFK and FDR could’ve brought us so low. That he and his enablers could have put their own needs and desire to retain power ahead of the continuation of the American experiment itself. It’s difficult to absorb, but like the Nuremberg trials, the 1/6 committee is an essential part of holding ourselves accountable - we have to face what happened, acknowledge the shortcomings that allowed it to happen, and take responsibility so it never happens again. This is an all-hands-on-deck moment. A five-alarm fire. American democracy is under attack in more ways than ever before. From the disinformation and voter suppression efforts based on Trump’s Big Lie, to the GOP abandoning democracy for their own power, to foreign cyber attacks and good old fashion voter machine manipulation. Congress is unable to pass a voter protection bill because the Republicans keep stonewalling and now the GOP are actively telling us they’re going to elect people who will cheat, suppress and even invalidate votes to make sure their candidates end up on top. America is at a crossroad. There is a real possibility that we will cease to have democracy in the United States. As Rothkopf says, “Republicans don’t just want to repeat the “Big Lie”, they want to repeat the ability to do what Trump WANTED to do and disenfranchise the American people.” Holding Trump accountable is essential, but almost more important, is defeating anyone who would undermine the integrity of our elections for their own power. We have to recognize that the majority of the country doesn’t believe this “noxious right wing cocktail of lies” but it’s up to us to make sure those who do, aren’t the ones making the decisions.
