In our latest episode, Rediscovering Jesus the Middle Easterner, my co-host Martin and I are joined by Nadim Nassar, Director of the Awareness Foundation, and Tanas Alqassis, SAT-7 UK Trustee. Together, we explore what it means to understand Jesus within the historical, cultural and geographical context of his life as a first-century Middle Eastern Jewish man—and why that matters for Christians today.
Throughout the conversation, we consider how our understanding of Jesus has often been shaped by culture, tradition and artistic representation, and how rediscovering the world in which he lived can deepen our reading of Scripture and enrich our faith. Rather than changing who Jesus is, recognising his Middle Eastern identity helps us appreciate the reality of the incarnation and the significance of God entering history in a particular place, among a particular people.
We also reflect on the realities of Jesus' own life, from living under Roman occupation to his family's flight to Egypt as refugees, and explore how these experiences continue to resonate with many people across the Middle East and North Africa today. The conversation invites us to see the region not simply as the backdrop to the biblical story, but as the home of vibrant Christian communities who continue to worship, witness and serve with remarkable faith and perseverance.
Drawing on the experiences and insights of our guests, we discuss what the global Church can learn from Christians living in the region where Christianity began. From hospitality and resilience to hope and faithful witness, this episode offers a fresh perspective on how understanding Jesus' historical context can shape our discipleship, broaden our view of God's kingdom and strengthen our connection with the living Church across the Middle East and North Africa.

In this special live-recorded episode, my co-host Mary and were joined by three exceptional women whose leadership is shaping Christian media and ministry across the UK, the Middle East and North Africa: Rita El-Mounayer, International CEO of SAT-7; Julia Bicknell, award-winning former BBC journalist and SAT-7 UK Trustee; and Rachel Fadipe, CEO of SAT-7 UK and a passionate advocate for strengthening faith-based leadership.
Together, we explore what leadership looks like for women today, reflecting on the opportunities, challenges and personal journeys that have shaped each of our guests. From navigating positions of influence to overcoming barriers and embracing their calling, this is an honest conversation about leading with courage, humility and faith.
We also examine the unique role media plays in amplifying women's voices, challenging stereotypes and creating opportunities across the Middle East, North Africa and the UK. Through personal stories and cross-cultural reflection, our guests share how their faith has shaped their understanding of leadership—not as a position of power, but as an opportunity to serve others with wisdom, compassion and humility.
This conversation celebrates the diversity of women's experiences while encouraging us to think more deeply about how we can champion and equip leaders in our own communities. It is a powerful reminder that faithful leadership is rooted not in status, but in service, and that God continues to work through those who lead with integrity and purpose.

In this month's powerful episode, my co-host Martin Thomas and I were honoured to be joined by two inspiring guests from Sudan, Samuel Luak and Rafat Samir. Together, we reflected on the current conflict in Sudan, the everyday realities people are facing, the experience of Christians, and where hope can still be found. It makes for an incredibly striking and moving conversation.
As violence and displacement continue to devastate lives across Sudan, this conflict has too often faded from international attention and yet it has become the world's largest humanitarian crises. In this episode Samuel and Rafat bravely share their personal experiences of the conflict, helping us to better understand the human impact and why it is so important that the global Church does not forget the people of Sudan. As we listen to their stories, we are reminded of the importance of standing with them in prayer and continuing to raise awareness of the ongoing crisis.
We also explore how God is at work in the midst of unimaginable hardship. From stories of remarkable resilience to the vital role of Christian community and media ministry, this conversation reminds us that even in the darkest circumstances, hope in Christ continues to shine. It is an invitation not only to listen and learn, but also to pray, to stand alongside our Sudanese brothers and sisters, and to keep their stories alive.
While it might not be the easiest conversation, we hope this episode will deepen your understanding of the situation in Sudan, encourage you to pray for our brothers and sisters there, and remind you that God is at work even amid conflict and suffering.

In this episode of Around the Table, my co-host George Makeen and I are joined by SAT-7's very own Emily Shurmer and Andrea El-Mounayer for a thoughtful and timely conversation exploring the lives, faith, and experiences of children, both in the UK and across the MENA region.
Together we reflect on what it means to see children through Jesus’ eyes – recognising their dignity, value, and worth, and considering how we can nurture faith, compassion, and curiosity in the next generation. As children today navigate an increasingly complex world, we explore some of the realities shaping their lives, while also highlighting the surprising similarities in children’s experiences across cultures and contexts.
Join us as we discuss how SAT-7 is responding to the spiritual and emotional needs of children in the MENA through faith-filled programming that brings hope, encouragement, and biblical truth into homes across the region. We explore the unique power of storytelling and television to help children engage with Scripture in meaningful and accessible ways.
Our guests are also keen to highlight the importance of understanding the Bible in its Middle Eastern context and as part of SAT-7 UK’s vision to help equip children with greater awareness of the region and deeper biblical literacy – Emily Shurmer introduces her incredible latest creation, our brand-new children’s colouring and activity book, A Very Middle Eastern Bible Atlas.

Thu, 18 Jun 2026 - 55 - 7 ways to pray for the Middle East this June
Welcome to 7 Ways to Pray, a monthly podcast brought to you by SAT-7.
On the last day of May 1996, an Egyptian Christian sat down in front of his television set and saw something he had never seen on Arabic TV before: a female Arabic presenter with a cross around her neck.
To see a representative of the almost invisible Arab Christian minority on screen was such a shock to him that he just had to call the station and say, “Mish maoul!” “This is unbelievable!”
From that first simple broadcast to today, we praise God for the growth of His ministry and thank you for your faithful prayers and support – some of you from the very beginning.

In this episode of Around the Table, we explore powerful, real-life stories of how God is moving across the region today. From quiet, personal moments of transformation to wider expressions of faith in challenging contexts, this episode offers a glimpse into lives shaped by resilience and the hope of Christ.
Together, we reflect on what it means to live out faith in Christ in the MENA region—often in circumstances that require courage, perseverance, and deep trust in God. These are stories that don’t often make the headlines, yet they speak volumes about His presence at work in everyday life right across the region.
Too often the story we hear of the MENA is about conflict, crisis and uncertainty. And while that certainly is part of the story – it's not the whole story! Beyond those narratives are individuals and communities encountering God in regular and profound ways. In this episode, we step beyond the headlines and dive into the extraordinary stories of God on the move in the MENA.
We also consider the role that Christian media has in sharing these stories—how platforms like SAT-7 create space for voices of faith to be heard, encouraging and connecting believers across borders.
This is a hopeful and uplifting conversation about how God continues to move across the region that we read about in our Bibles, and the hope that continues to grow even in the most unexpected places.

Tue, 12 May 2026 - 53 - 7 ways to pray for the Middle East this May
As each day brings new headlines of war and suffering in the Middle East, we continue to trust in the power of God to answer our prayers for the people of the region. In recent weeks, we have been inspired and encouraged by the faith of our supporters – like Maretta, a child displaced from southern Lebanon, who shared with us:
“The Bible is our only comfort that gives us strength despite all the difficulties we face. In the Bible, the words ‘Fear Not’ are mentioned 365 times for all the days of the year. Jesus knew we would fear and reminds us not to fear despite all that we face. His message for us is to be strong and not fear but to pray.”
Like Maretta, let’s not give in to fear, but continue to turn to God in prayer.

Being Young in the MENA: Youth, Identity, and Shaping the Future
In this episode of Around the Table, we explore what it really means to be young in the Middle East and North Africa today. With over half the region’s population under the age of 30, this is a generation shaping the present as much as the future—full of creativity, resilience, and potential, while also navigating significant challenges.
Together, we step beyond the headlines to hear a more nuanced story. From questions of identity and belonging to the realities of opportunity, uncertainty, and hope, this conversation offers insight into life through the eyes of young people across the region.
We also reflect on the role of media in this landscape—how it influences, informs, and connects young audiences, and why platforms like SAT-7 are vital in creating space for authentic stories, and the Good News of Jesus, to be shared.
This isn’t a conversation about easy answers. It’s about listening — to the challenges young people face, to the questions they’re asking, and to the hope they carry as they navigate a rapidly changing world and help shape its future.

Tue, 14 Apr 2026 - 51 - 7 Ways to Pray in Times of Crisis
Welcome to 7 Ways to Pray, a monthly podcast brought to you by SAT-7.
This month, we bring you 7 prayers from SAT-7 staff across the Middle East. Over the last month, we have all been left reeling by the sudden and largescale war in the Middle East that broke out at the beginning of March. You may have been wondering how to pray at this time of crisis. We hope these seven prayers will help guide you. Maybe you could share them with others – in your church, small group or prayer meeting?

Join us for another impactful conversation Around the Table, SAT-7 UK’s podcast where voices from the UK, the Middle East, and North Africa come together for honest, faith-filled conversations that go deeper than the headlines.
In this special episode marking International Women’s Day, hosts Sophie Griffith, George Makeen and Martin Thomas are joined by best-selling author Karen Bartlett and distinguished TV producer and director Mikael Tunér. Together, they take part in a powerful and thought-provoking conversation about Afghanistan, exploring vital themes including women’s rights, justice, faith and the role of the media. While the discussion is not always easy, it is both necessary and deeply important — and one we hope you’ll find as insightful as it is compelling.
For many of us, Afghanistan filled the headlines in 2021, with images of chaos, desperation, and departure as Western forces completed their withdrawal from the country. Then, almost as suddenly, it slipped from view; but for the people of Afghanistan, the story didn’t simply end there.
So, in this episode, we take a deeper look at what life has been like since August 2021: the impact on women, on justice, on faith, and on the voices that are still finding ways to be heard, even under extreme pressure.
We would have loved to have included the voices of women from Afghanistan in this episode. Unfortunately, due to security concerns, this wasn’t possible. Instead, we draw on the insights of people who have worked closely with Afghan women and their stories. We hope that Karen’s experience interviewing many of the Afghan women judges for her book Escape from Kabul, combined with Mikael’s heart for women’s programming after growing up in Afghanistan, makes for a compelling and inspiring conversation.
This conversation is not about quick answers or simple conclusions. Rather it’s about listening — to stories of resilience, to the role of media and faith in closed spaces, and to the quiet hope that continues to exist even where freedom is severely restricted.

Mon, 09 Feb 2026 - 46 - 7 Reasons to Pray for the Middle East
Welcome to 7 Reasons to Pray for the Middle East, a special one-off podcast and church resource brought to you by SAT-7 UK.
If we’re honest with ourselves, sometimes we can wonder what the point is in praying for people we’ll never meet, or for global situations that feel too big to solve. When we’re overwhelmed by the challenges facing the Middle East, our prayers can seem small and insignificant.
Yet when we turn to the Bible, we see that God invites us to pray – not just to change the world, but to change our own hearts in the process. That’s why we’ve come up with 7 Reasons to Pray for the Middle East – a brand-new resource for you and your church, as well as this month’s podcast. We hope these seven Bible-based reasons inspire you to pray more regularly, more urgently, and more deeply for our brothers and sisters around the world.
Use today’s talk in your church or small group

7 Reasons to Pray for the Middle East
Let’s recap the 7 reasons to pray for the Middle East, along with the Bible references used:
- We want to be more like Jesus. “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.”John 17:20-21 Our MENA brothers and sisters are asking us to. “But God has put the body together… its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honoured, every part rejoices with it.”1 Corinthians 12:24-26: It gives us a more global perspective. “[Stand] firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.”1 Peter 5:8-10 To align our hearts with God’s heart. “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”Matthew 6:10 As a biblical response to our worries. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”Philippians 4:6 It inspires us to praise God! “Praise him for his acts of power, praise him for his surpassing greatness.” Psalm 150:2 God answers our prayers. “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”James 5:16

- We thank you for SAT-7’s Christmas broadcasts, and pray they will draw people to find out about you for the first time. We particularly lift up isolated believers who can’t celebrate with others, and ask that they will find fellowship through SAT-7. We pray for those around the region who are suffering, that they will know the presence of Jesus, our Emmanuel. We give thanks for the return of Christmas celebrations in Bethlehem, the town of your birth. We pray for those in the Middle East who are observing traditional times of fasting, that they will have a fresh experience of your Spirit. We lift up all of SAT-7’s plans for 2026, and pray that you will be at the centre. And finally, we give thanks for the season of Advent, and pray that we will focus our hearts on the joy of your coming.
In His name, Amen.
Sat, 29 Nov 2025 - 40 - 7 Ways to Pray for the Middle East this November
Welcome to 7 Ways to Pray, a monthly podcast brought to you by SAT-7.
When we watch the news and see some of the huge challenges facing the Middle East and North Africa, it can be hard to know how to pray. In this podcast, we’ll share a round-up of 7 key prayer points, to guide and inspire you in your prayers for the region.
This month, we are praising God for answered prayer. Back in September, many of you joined SAT-7 and other Christian organisations in a global day of prayer for peace in the Holy Land. In answer to these prayers, it is hugely encouraging to see a ceasefire agreement on the table, and the return of hostages and those who were imprisoned. As well as continuing to pray for the Holy Land at this crucial time, please lift up Sudan, where peace remains elusive.
Thank you for joining us in prayer.

Dear God,
- We thank you for hearing our prayers for the Holy Land, and ask that the ceasefire agreement will bring about true peace. We pray urgently for our brothers and sisters in Sudan, that you will protect them and bring an end to the bitter conflict they are suffering through. We thank you for the medium of satellite television, and the way it has enabled SAT-7 to continue reaching Afghan believers despite an internet blackout. We give thanks for SAT-7 KIDS programme In His Image, and pray that young viewers will become rooted in the Bible. We celebrate all the new believers who have come to know you through SAT-7, and pray you will protect Idriss in Algeria and draw him even closer to you. We pray for David as he starts his new role, and for him and the Church Engagement team as they make plans for 2026. We lift up all our Advent plans, and pray that those using SAT-7’s resources will be “overwhelmed with joy” as they learn about the Middle East and reflect on Jesus’ birth.
In His name, Amen.

Mon, 29 Sep 2025 - 37 - Middle East Briefing - Churches under attack
The whole Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has been on high alert in the last few weeks. Suffering continues in the Holy Land as Gaza’s only Catholic church was bombed last week, and a suicide bombing in a Damascus church has sent shockwaves through Syria’s minority Christian community. Despite a fragile ceasefire, tension remains high after the launch of airstrikes on Iran in June and the subsequent retaliatory attacks.

Fri, 27 Jun 2025 - 35 - The Türkiye Briefing: Türkiye’s forgotten faith finds a voice
Türkiye is a nation that bridges East and West. It was once the heart of early Christianity and is home to many foundational moments in the Church’s story – from the journeys of the Apostle Paul to the Council of Nicaea. Yet today, Christianity is often misunderstood and marginalised among Turks. This briefing explores Türkiye’s Christian heritage, its complex modern landscape, and the impact of SAT-7 TÜRK – a Christian television channel that this year celebrates a decade of boldly sharing the love of Christ with Turkish-speakers on Türkiye’s national satellite.
Show Note Resources:
Prayer Points:
For a Turkish Church that is well-connected, united, full of love, and standing firm in Jesus. For wisdom and safety in Türkiye in the wake of earthquakes and protests. For the team at SAT-7 TÜRK, that they may be encouraged and supported as they work to represent the Christian faith in Türkiye in an accurate, loving and understandable way. Give thanks for SAT-7 TÜRK and pray that viewers will continue to be encouraged and supported, so that they may grow in faith and fellowship. Why “Türkiye” and not “Turkey”?
You might notice that we spell ‘Turkey’ as ‘Türkiye’. In 2022, the UN accepted the country’s request for its name to be internationally recognised as Türkiye. As an international broadcaster, and one that has a presence in the country, SAT-7 has decided to adopt this change.

At the same time, the passing of Pope Francis – a global symbol of peace and unity – has stirred reflection and renewed calls for compassion and courage. Through it all, SAT-7 continues to uplift and connect believers, broadcasting peace, prayer, and truth into places of darkness.

This month, in our first ever Country Briefing, we take a closer look at Sudan – a nation that has been gripped by war since April 2023. To date, the conflict has displaced over 8 million people and left around 25 million in dire need of humanitarian aid. Many Christians have faced threats and forced displacement, and churches have been attacked.

PRAY FOR SUDAN:
• For protection and safety: Pray for the safety of Christians caught in the crossfire of the ongoing conflict. Ask for God's protection over their lives, homes, and places of worship, and for an end to targeted violence against them.
• For provision of basic needs: Pray for the provision of essential resources such as food, clean water, and medical aid. Many Christians are struggling to survive amidst the fighting, so ask for God's provision and support from international aid organisations.
• For strength and unity: Give thanks for the strength and unity within the Christian community. Ask God to help them support one another and remain strong in their faith despite the challenges they face. Give thanks that through SAT-7, they can find fellowship and support from other believers.
• For peace and stability: Pray for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Sudan. Ask for wisdom and humility for the leaders involved, and for international efforts to successfully mediate and bring about lasting peace.
• For religious freedom: Pray for the protection and enhancement of religious freedoms in Sudan. Ask God to soften the hearts of those in power and to protect the rights of all religious minorities in the country.

Fri, 31 May 2024 - 9 - 7-Minute Briefing: Freedoms remain elusive for Middle East Christians, women and the press
Freedom and security seem ever more elusive in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). This month, we bring you various reports on religious freedom, women’s rights and press freedom, as well as more hopeful news from Syria.
The Church across the MENA faces a host of new and existing challenges to its freedom. In rural Egypt last month, the construction of a new evangelical church has sparked hostilities against local Christians, including homes being set on fire and attacked with stones. In Algeria, most Protestant churches remain closed after being forcibly shut by the government in 2017. Concerns are also growing for religious freedom in Afghanistan, Azerbaijan and northern Yemen, where Christian minorities are under increased persecution. And in Gaza, International Christian Concern have reported that up to three quarters of the already-tiny Christian community have either left or are planning to leave the enclave.
Here at SAT-7, we long for freedom in the MENA – where our brothers and sisters in the MENA can worship together without danger or restrictions, where women are treated as equals, and where journalists are free to report in safety. But while that day remains elusive, our channels continue to broadcast powerful programmes that hold out the certain hope of freedom in Christ.
And in a story of resilience, we celebrate the news that church bells will ring out again in Raqqa, Syria. “The fact that people can once again rebuild their churches and ring their bells is a sign of hope to a place that has suffered so much,” says George Makeen, SAT-7’s Ministry Content Adviser. “SAT-7 is aware of the good work churches are doing in Syria – the spirit of unity is growing.” Let’s continue to pray for freedom, unity and resilience for the Church across the MENA.

Wed, 15 May 2024 - 8 - 7-Minute Briefing: Middle East Christians carry the cross amid ongoing suffering
The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) finds itself on a knife-edge after the fresh involvement of Iran in the ongoing Holy Land conflict, and a war between generals continues to ravage Sudan with dire humanitarian consequences. In the past month, many Christians in the MENA celebrated Western Easter on 31 March. But against a backdrop of regional war, famine, tension and suffering, celebrations were subdued.

Sun, 31 Mar 2024 - 6 - 7-Minute Briefing: The cost of war and a call to forgive
The Holy Land and Sudan continued to suffer ruinous wars this month. Millions of people face hunger and starvation in Sudan, and famine has now taken hold in Gaza. As the Muslim month of Ramadan approached last week, international efforts to end both conflicts were intensifying.
Hopes for a 40-day ceasefire between Hamas and Israel were disappointed last week. Israel has so far held off a ground invasion in Rafah, where around 1.3 million displaced Gazans have taken refuge. Among them is Dalia, a teenage girl who told SAT-7 about her hopes to finish her education. Click here to read the Briefing and watch Dalia tell her story.
Calls for revenge can be deafening in the Middle East and North Africa, where lives are regularly torn apart by national conflicts and community tensions. But SAT-7 is sharing a radically different message through the stories of Christians who choose to follow Christ’s call to forgive their enemies. In this month’s Briefing, you’ll also find the story of Rania, a Lebanese woman who forgave her father’s killer.
And, when the news headlines feel like too much to take, we can always respond by bringing these situations before our heavenly Father in prayer. We invite you to join us on Zoom on 27 March, for what will hopefully be an uplifting and encouraging “40 minutes of prayer for the Middle East”.

- 2 - 7-Minute Briefing: Ongoing conflicts and reasons to hope
Welcome to the 7-Minute Briefing podcast – your monthly roundup of news from the Middle East and North Africa, brought to you by SAT-7.
As many of us pack away the final trappings of Christmas and step with positivity back into a new year, the Middle East and North Africa begins 2024 dominated by the war in Gaza and an under-reported conflict in Sudan. Gaza has now seen war for over 100 days. A tired, frightened population is retreating into an ever-smaller, increasingly uninhabitable enclave, as intense fighting continues between the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and Hamas. The threat of further conflict also looms north on Israel’s border with neighbouring Lebanon, as tensions mount with the Islamic political group Hezbollah. And in Sudan, the fierce struggle for territory between the Sudanese army and the paramilitaries known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) intensifies as both parties resist international calls for a negotiated peace.
