Sami Hamdi joins Muhammad Jalal to examine the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, the renewed war in Yemen and what this escalation means for Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Following deadly strikes on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport and disruption to flights, Saudi Arabia faces renewed questions about its air defences and its reliance on American protection. The attacks have also disrupted attendance at Riyadh’s major energy conference, putting the kingdom’s ambitions as an international investment destination under pressure.

In this episode of The Thinking Muslim, Sami explores why he believes Mohammed bin Salman has become increasingly isolated. He examines Donald Trump’s approach to the Houthis and Iran, Saudi Arabia’s rivalry with the UAE, and the limits of the Mecca defence alliance with Pakistan and Türkiye.

The conversation also examines Yemen’s fractured politics and the consequences of foreign intervention. Sami challenges the celebration of the Houthis over Palestine, arguing that Muslim solidarity must also account for their treatment of Yemenis.

Peter Gould joins Muhammad Jalal on The Thinking Muslim to discuss **Tales of Khayal**, a fantasy universe he co-created with author Rehan Khan, inspired by Islamic spirituality and the rich heritage of Muslim civilisation. With a novel series and plans for animation and a video game, the project explores how faith can shape the stories young Muslims grow up with.

Recorded in Istanbul, this conversation examines the Islamic understanding of imagination, or *khayal*, and its relationship to the heart. Gould shares how embracing Islam changed his approach to design, and how Islamic art and architecture continue to inform his work.

They discuss the concerns parents have about gaming and screen time, alongside the possibilities for immersive storytelling that encourages remembrance of Allah. Gould explains how Tales of Khayal draws on sacred knowledge and the history of colonialism, weaving questions about power and technological change into an adventure story.

Three years after the beginning of the genocide in Gaza in October 2023, the ummah is still reckoning with what it has witnessed. Dr. Assal Rad is a Middle East historian known as the “headline fixer” for her viral media corrections. Her new book, Don’t Say Palestine: How the Media Manufactured Consent for Genocide, examines how outlets including The New York Times and the BBC helped manufacture consent for Israel’s genocide in Gaza through language, framing and omission.

In this conversation, Assal joins Muhammad Jalal to examine how Western media has reported on Palestine, Israel and Gaza, and what that reporting reveals about the relationship between journalism, political power and public consent.

From passive language around Palestinian deaths to the treatment of Israeli military claims, the discussion looks at how headlines and editorial choices can shape the way audiences understand war.

As tensions involving the United States, Iran and the wider Middle East remain at the centre of global politics, we also ask whether Western media can still manufacture support for war in the way it did before the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Norman Finkelstein returns to The Thinking Muslim to examine how Israel’s war on Gaza has reshaped American and British politics.

From Tucker Carlson and the rise of “America First” opposition to Israel, to Zohran Mamdani, democratic socialism and growing anger among young Americans, Finkelstein asks whether this political realignment is driven by principle or opportunity. Can the Muslim world recover from political decline? What resources does the Islamic tradition offer in times of crisis, and what does genuine regeneration look like?

In this episode of The Thinking Muslim, we sit inside the historic Al-Nuri Bimaristan in Damascus with Dr. Francesca Bocca-Aldaqre to explore one of the most remarkable institutions in Islamic civilisation.

The bimaristan was not simply a hospital. It was a place of healing that understood the human being in their entirety, body, mind, and soul. At a time when much of the world had yet to develop humane approaches to mental healthcare, Islamic civilisation had already built institutions rooted in dignity, compassion, and holistic care.

Together, we explore what made the bimaristan unique, from its patient-centred design and therapeutic environment to the waqf systems that sustained it for generations. We also reflect on what Syria has lost through war, what traditional Islamic approaches to healing can still offer today, and whether these institutions can once again play a role in rebuilding a wounded society.

As Syria looks toward recovery, this conversation asks an urgent question: can true reconstruction happen without healing the people themselves?

Yet months later, many of those ambitions appear unrealised. We examine whether the war has damaged perceptions of American power, strengthened Iran's position, and exposed the limits of Israeli influence despite its military campaign.

We also explore the growing independence of regional powers such as Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, both of which resisted pressure to join a wider confrontation. Has a new regional order begun to emerge?

The conversation turns to Syria, where Ahmed al-Sharaa faces mounting pressure to navigate a volatile geopolitical landscape while prioritising stability and reconstruction. We discuss whether Damascus can avoid being drawn into future conflicts and what role Syria may play in the region's future.

In this short segment, Sami Hamdi emphasises that the month in which the Qur’an was revealed is a month of action, not rest. He explains that Ramadan was never intended to be a period of passivity or withdrawal, but a time rooted in purpose and transformation. The revelation itself came as a challenge to injustice and oppression, calling people to reform both themselves and the societies around them.

By reminding us that the Qur’an descended in Ramadan, he highlights that this month is connected to movement, struggle, and moral clarity. The Prophet ﷺ did not suspend his mission during Ramadan. Rather, it was a time of intensified resolve and commitment. Fasting is therefore not about slowing down, but about disciplining the self so that one can act with greater strength, courage, and dedication to justice.

Some of our scholars have failed Gaza. At a time of unparalleled horror, when two million people face systematic annihilation, too many religious voices remain silent, choosing proximity to power and wealth over the prophetic duty to speak truth. Since the brutal ongoing genocide in Gaza, we have witnessed not only a deepening humanitarian catastrophe but also cracks appearing in Western narrative control. Stories are changing, editorial lines are shifting, and public trust in legacy media is eroding. At the same time, Palestinian voices, once pushed to the margins, are being amplified like never before through social media and alternative platforms.

What we’re witnessing now isn’t just a shift in how Gaza is covered, but who gets to shape that coverage.

For years, the dominant narrative has been tightly controlled: Israel as the democratic victim, Palestinians as aggressors.

But that story no longer holds, at least not unchallenged.

The genocide in Gaza is one that is unparalleled in Muslim history, two million people are being annihilated in the most systematic way, with no escape. On one side stands the fascistic zionist entity and on the other a wall of compliant, tepid, Muslim rulers who have expended zero political capital to help their beleaguered brethren. Instead they feed their imperial north star, the United States, wishing to usher this away so they can continue as usual. A pitiful existence, in a region where Israel looks to undermine any whiff of independence.

But is there a greater problem than the Arab rulers? If the Egyptian army guard the gates of Rafah, where are the Muslim people to hold them to account? If the Islamic faith was founded upon principles of calling out the good and forbidding the evil, then why do so many of us live lives that fail to internalise this disaster, let alone move to hold the conspirators to account. What of the Muslim scholars, our historical north star? How is it that so many of them continue to preach a detachment that preserves their proximity to thrones and funds. Is there a problem with our Islam. This is the question we look at with Dr Farah El-Sharif.

The Prophet Mohammad PBUH was the first activist in Islam. Sultan Abdul Hamid II is a man vilified by some, lionized by others, yet rarely understood on his own terms. To his critics, he was the Red Sultan, a reactionary despot who clung to power as his empire unraveled. But to his defenders, he was the last bulwark against European imperialism, a caliph who dared to say no when so many bowed their heads.

Dr Shadee El-Masry, argues that historically, sufi movements have been at the fore of fighting for justice. Sufism produced illustrious anti-colonialism struggles and courageous warriors.

Dr Shadee El-Masry is the scholar in Residence and Director of Education and Community Affairs at the New Brunswick Islamic Center in New Jersey. He is also the founder and head of Safina Society—an institution dedicated to the cause of traditional Islamic education in the West.

Dr. Francesca Bocca-Aldaqre offers a thoughtful reflection of the place of Islam in European imagination over the past few centuries.

Dr. Francesca Bocca-Aldaqre holds a MSc in Neuro-Cognitive Psychology & a PhD in Systemic Neuroscience (both from Ludwig-Maximilians Universität Munich, Germany) and a Diploma in Islamic Psychology (Cambridge Muslim College). She works as a counsellor in Islamic Psychology worldwide. She authored several books in poetry as well as essays on the relationship between Western thought and Islam.

The Nakba Never Ended.

The Nakba, the “Catastrophe”. It wasn’t just a moment in 1948 — it is a reality that has lived on for 77 years. It’s in the bulldozed homes of Gaza. It’s the children laying underneath the rubble. It’s in the olive trees ripped from the West Bank. It’s in the silence of classrooms where students are told not to speak the word “Nakba” out loud. It’s in every grave of a journalist, every mother’s scream, every child who’s asking– where is the world?

Today, we’re joined by none other than Leanne Mohammad, British Palestinian activist who ran as an independent candidate for Ilford North in the British general elections, came just 500 votes within toppling the current Health Secretary of Kier Starmer's cabinet. Tipped by some to be the next Prime Minister. We will be talking about the Nakbah of yesterday, and how the legacy of the Nakbah inspires us today.
