- 31 - EP 30: End of Weekly EP Season 1 Playlist
This episode marks the end of the first season of Weekly EP, and to celebrate I'm playing one song from each guest so far, without interruption. I hope it encourages anyone who hasn't heard some of the earlier episodes to go back and take a listen.
Wed, 21 Oct 2020 - 30 - EP 29: The Planes - "The Oracle of Marcy"
This is Episode 29 with three piece band, The Planes, from Brooklyn, NY. I chatted with singer and guitarist Stephen Perry about their Weekly EP, and we got pretty deep into songwriting, alternate tunings, and making music a part of your daily life. Title: The Oracle of Marcy Artist: The Planes | Tracklisting: | 01 The Oracle 02 The Scandal 03 The Gallows 04 The Earthquake | Artist Links: | https://theplanesnyc.bandcamp.com/ https://bandnada.com/b/theplanes (Live show!) https://www.facebook.com/ThePlanesNYC
Wed, 14 Oct 2020 - 29 - EP 28: Fatboy Wilson & Old Viejo Bones - "Preparing for the Apocalypse"
This is EP 28 with Fatboy Wilson & Old Viejo Bones, currently based out of somewhere near the California coast. Their album was recorded on a farm, and written in part on a hidden secret river bank. A bunch of eclectic influences and fun true stories all come together to make a really nice record. We talk about how this record was made, as well as hiking, combining real and software instruments and apocalyptic orange skies. Artist: Fatboy Wilson & Old Viejo BonesAlbum Title: "Preparing For the Apocalypse" Tracklisting: ------------- 1. Lost Coast 2. El Mundo Se Va Acabar 3. All Things Pass 4. River Shaper 5. Wed, 07 Oct 2020 - 28 - EP 27: Hieronymus Bogs - "Untitled"
This is Episode 27 with Hieronymus Bogs, based out of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. The album is made up of three beautiful and haunting songs rooted in nature and the mind. One of them is even a painting turned song, which is really cool. Title: "Untitled" Artist: Hieronymus Bogs Tracklisting: ------------- 1. Ship of Fools 2. The Hermit Song 3. Blessed Life | Artist Links: | https://www.hieronymusbogs.com/ https://hieronymusbogs.bandcamp.com/ https://www.facebook.com/HieronymusBogs/
Wed, 30 Sep 2020 - 27 - EP 26: Ester - Weak
This is Episode 26 with Anna Holmquist, from the band Ester, based out of Chicago, Illinois. We talk about Anna's Weekly EP, "Weak", finally learning to play instruments you find in the back of your closet, and only understanding the meaning behind your own songs weeks after you write them. Title: Weak Artist: Ester Tracklisting: ------------- 1. Mouth 2. Danger 3. Rachel 4. One damn thing | Links: | https://estermusic.bandcamp.com/ https://open.spotify.com/artist/42rZgY4nZlTMktyuqg2ruj
Wed, 16 Sep 2020 - 26 - EP 25: Oarlet - Engendered
This is Episode 25 with Oarlet, from Tampere, Finland. Oarlet and I talk about qwerty keyboards, how listening to music, especially your own, in new environments is important and writing a new song quickly, after you thought you'd lost "it". EP Title: Engendered Artist: Oarlet Tracklisting: 1. This is how the worlds collide 2. I'll sing when all hope is gone 3. Estranged by the cause 4. Wed, 09 Sep 2020 - 25 - EP 24: a 24h Single Minisode w/ Alex Rapp - "Through My Sheets"
This week we're doing a special minisode, a 24h Single. Same general concept, but guests have 24 hours to write one song. The idea is to allow musicians to take part in the challenge and process, who otherwise wouldn't be able to because of an album release schedule, work, etc. Today our guest is Alex Rapp, from here in Berlin, Germany. We talk about her 24 hour single, as well as making music with Ableton, how fun and sometimes tricky (for me anyway) vocal harmonies can be, and how writing music can be therapeutic. Song name: "Through My Sheets" | Links: | https://www.alexrapp.com/ https://alexrapp.bandcamp.com/album/valencia-2 https://open.spotify.com/album/6IUHF7NMypWVGTLbpWoteg?si=617xmMEnR6yfqPgCW36l3A
Wed, 02 Sep 2020 - 24 - EP 23: Noisycrane - Out of the Blue GoodNight
Episode 23 of Weekly EP is a strange, personal episode. Instead of a normal episode, this is a premiere of a long, and an even longer overdue record. It's not a record that anyone was waiting for, but it's one that shouldn't live only on a hard drive. This episode is simply the premiere of "Out of the Blue GoodNight" by your host, Cody Swanson, under the name Noisycrane. This record was recorded in New York City nearly four years ago and it was never released because I could never decide on a name, and I never got the tracks mastered. So I never put it out. In the spirit of the podcast though, which aims to just allow music to exist without being perfect or agonized over, I've decided to release it here and now.
Wed, 26 Aug 2020 - 23 - EP 22: Joshua Wentz - Nostrums
This is Episode 22 featuring guest Joshua Wentz, from Chicago Illinois in the US, with his Weekly EP, "Nostrums". I think this may be the longest Weekly EP episode so far and I think that's because I had a really good time talking with Joshua about how he makes music and I'm a little very jealous of his music basement studio. I think you'll really enjoy listening to Joshua's album and learning about all the acoustic and digital instruments that went into it. We also chat about Tubular Bells, Xylopipes... we get a little into the politics of the times, and then of course I also bring up my imaginary Waffle House podcast again. Title: Nostrums Artist: Joshua Wentz with Always Forever Now (J.Monteverde, J. Wentz, J. Yuan) Tracklisting: 1. Reverse Out 2. CCTV 3. Artemis 4. Hand to Eye 5. Show of Force 6. Bromide Storm | Links: | www.joshuawentz.com @joshua_w_wentz (instagram) www.currentmoods.podbean.com (podcast)
Wed, 19 Aug 2020 - 22 - EP 21: Music With the Boys - Road Trip
This is Episode 21 with Music With the Boys, aka Joshua Wade Freeman and TJ, from outside Atlanta, Georgia in the US, with their Weekly EP, "Road Trip". The boys and I talk about, in no particular order: waffle house, gas stations, car troubles and having fun while learning how to record and make music. They made an honest and silly album about taking a road trip, and we had an equally absurd conversation.////Tracklisting:////1. Anywhere or Bust 2. Wed, 12 Aug 2020 - 21 - EP 20: Miss Nöyd - I Dunno
This is Episode 20 with Miss Nöyd, aka Bente Lorentzen, currently from here in Berlin, Germany. Bente and I talk about finding new ways to approach music from a child like, carefree way. Meaning having fun and not really caring what anyone else thinks. This seems like a pretty good way to approach music in general, to me. We also talk about how playing live is so valuable to writing music and what that's going to look like going forward.
Wed, 05 Aug 2020 - 20 - EP 19 - Summer Holiday Comp Vol. 2
I'm still on holiday this week, exploring southern German beer gardens and beautiful picturesque streets. BUT luckily this is The Summer Holiday Comp Vol. 2. In just a moment you'll hear a few songs each from eight awesome past guests here on Weekly EP. Think of it sort of like a playlist, even though this podcast is normally the opposite of a playlist. Well, I'm not actually such what's technically the opposite of a playlist. But anywho, let's get into it.
Wed, 29 Jul 2020 - 19 - EP 18: Summer Holiday Comp Vol. 1
Over the next two weeks Weekly EP will be on a summer holiday. Lauren and I are finally checking out a bit more of the small cities and towns outside of Berlin and so that means there won't be any new guests until August. BUT I figured this was a good opportunity to showcase the amazing guests we've had the privilege of featuring and interviewing so far. So this week we'll feature two or three songs from eight previous guest musicians.
Wed, 22 Jul 2020 - 18 - EP 17: Gonghi (Giovanni Fiderio) - Gonghi
This is Episode 17 with Giovanni Fiderio, from Syracuse, Italy. We talk about finding old keyboards, using drum patterns as improvisation inspiration, and how sometimes restrictions brought on by global issues can transform one space into another. Gonghi album artwork photo by Maria Vittoria Trovato Tracklisting: 1. oltre la fascia di asteroidi 2. pioggia e tuoni 3. the infinite trip 4. reclamation | Links: | https://tapso.bandcamp.com https://mashrooms.bandcamp.com https://gonghi.bandcamp.com/
Wed, 15 Jul 2020 - 17 - EP 16: Elisa Flynn - Eighty Three
This is Episode 16 with Elisa Flynn, from Brooklyn, New York in the US. Elisa was super easy to talk to and I really dig where she got the inspiration for the songs on her album this week. We talk about the Tom Cruise movie Legend, vampires, kate bush, trying to write slightly less depressing songs, and wonder if the beats that come with Garageband should just be considered fair use at this point.
Wed, 08 Jul 2020 - 16 - EP 15: Clayton Eddy - Summer Feels
This is Episode 15 with Clayton Eddy, from Buffalo NY in the US. Clayton is in a two person group called Buffalo Sexchange and the other member, Phil, aka Beef Gordon, who was our very first guest on the show. So I was super happy to get Clayton on here. It turns out this was Clayton's first go at digital multi-track recording his own music but you wouldn't know it (we get into his somewhat practical, but I think unusual recording method later). We also talk about motorcycle sidecars, recording vs live performances and trying to write timeless songs during a pandemic.
Wed, 01 Jul 2020 - 15 - Ep 14: Hali Palombo - Hell
This is Episode 14 with Hali Palombo, from Chicago, Illinois in the US. The record Hali has made, that you're about to hear, is one of the more interesting and experimental we've had so far and I love it. And I love it even more now, knowing how it was made. Hint, international radio stations were involved. My wife and I have one radio in our apartment that we pretty much only use to occasionally listen to Klassik Radio, a 24h classic music station, while cooking here in Berlin. But that radio can't do what what Hali's many radios can.
Wed, 24 Jun 2020 - 14 - EP 13: Violet's Gone - Maybrain
This is Episode 13 with Violet's Gone, aka Chris Fordham, from Northampton, England. Chris came to the podcast by way of our guests from episode 8, and we talk about a range of good stuff including color perception, philosophy, who you should be writing music for, and Chris talks about how doing an album in a week has given him a whole new energetic push to finish a full length he's been working on for over a year. ////Tracklisting://////1. Time //2. Over The Wall //3. Learner //4. Kindling | Links: | violetsgone.bandcamp.com
Wed, 17 Jun 2020 - 13 - EP 12: Dr. Burtrum - HOUSE SPECIAL MIX EP
This is Episode 12 with Dr. Burtrum, aka Dylan Henderson, from New York City. Dylan made a very good, and I think accessible, electronic dance record that I hope you'll really enjoy. We also talk about the interesting new school old school way Dyland recorded this record, and a good amount about synths. As a result I think I'm getting closer and closer to getting another one...
Wed, 10 Jun 2020 - 12 - EP 11: A-E-I-O-U (Lauren Piper) - Something Like This
This is Episode 11 with Lauren Piper, of AEIOU, (pronounced vowels), from Berlin, Germany. We talk a lot about how little accidents in recording can lead to fun song structures, and making the shift from live recording with a loop pedal to home recording. Also, a little disclaimer, Lauren and I happen to be married, so the interview gets a bit silly at times.
Wed, 03 Jun 2020 - 11 - EP 10: Kyle McDonough - Times
This is Episode 10 with Kyle McDonough, from Kingston, NY. We talk the 4th of July, small towns, plate reverbs and wanting way too many musical instruments. Kyle has a large variety of musical output so I wasn't sure what to expect from this record, but it's a real treat with some deceptively simple emotional punches.
Wed, 27 May 2020 - 10 - EP 09: Manon Parent - Blanket
This is Episode 09 with Manon Parent, from here in Berlin, Germany. We talk about pigeons, octopuses, magic mushrooms, and wanting to make art that isn't only for people who traditionally have access to it. It took Manon a few weeks to find the time to set up her equipment and make this record because she has a lot of different art projects on her mind. But it was worth the wait. ////Tracklisting://// // 1. All Paradigms Shift // 2. The Weight of the Leaves // 3. Breathing Octopus // 4. Let's Give It Some Rest // 5. Lullaby For Georgia | Links: | www.ManonParent.com-------------------------- Album art by: Manon Parent & Moo - Instagram.com/moo_or_mu
Wed, 20 May 2020 - 9 - EP 08: Jose Delhart & Aubben Renée - Caminos Distintos
This is EP 8 and our guests today are Jose Delhart (Gonzales) and Aubben Renée, from Chaska, Minnesota, in the US. Jose and Aubben have been playing in various projects, and together, for years, and share some really great thoughts on creativity and collaborative music making while being part of a busy and loving family.
Wed, 13 May 2020 - 8 - EP 7: Chill Outside Society - Lirpa 0202
This is EP 7 and our guest today is Chill Outside Society, from Staatsburg, NY in the US. We cover the record, obviously, but also talk about what it's like to work on a farm in the woods and be able to record drums whenever you want.
Wed, 06 May 2020 - 7 - EP 6: Consumer. - Freedom & Power
Hello, it's EP #6! This week's guest is Consumer., from the US. Described by one reviewer as a "hyperkinetic, disorienting soundworld".
Wed, 29 Apr 2020 - 6 - EP 5: Gregor Dys - Vitrification
It's EP #5! And this week's guest, Gregor Dys, is from Berlin, Germany. The record is an awesome sprawling, changing pice that's multiple tracks but feels like one. We talk about using canceled live shows as inspiration for new music, switching creative paths to find something that works, and syths.
Wed, 22 Apr 2020 - 5 - EP 4: Workman Song - Q is for Quarantine! The Easter 2020 Collection
Workman song delivers a dynamic and polished record (listen with headphones!) and we talk about remote collaboration and how family can keep you centered on what's important.
Wed, 15 Apr 2020 - 4 - EP 3: nighttime Swimmer - Condolences
EP 3: A great record, and a silly interview. We talk about how pop songs are hard, watching the finale of a tv series first, and being surprised by the songs you write.
Wed, 08 Apr 2020 - 3 - EP 2: Noisycrane - Isolation Dance
This is an odd episode. The guest musician, coming from Berlin, Germany, is also the host of the show. But there's still an interview, of sorts. We/I talk about trying not to get complicated, not being able to do better than the demo recording, and peanut butter.
Wed, 01 Apr 2020 - 2 - EP 1: Beef Gordon - Alexanderplatz Expats
Welcome to the first episode of Weekly EP! Beef Gordon is our guest, and the album he made, Alexanderplatz Expats, is really nice and catchy. We talk about old drum machines, thrift store finds, and trying to stay minimal and direct in the digital recording era.
Wed, 25 Mar 2020 - 1 - Weekly EP - Trailer
Welcome to Weekly EP.Each episode we'll have a collection of brand new songs, from artists all over the world, written and recorded in seven days. Coming soon.
