Data shows that while 45% of India's graduates are women, just about 10% of educated women in the country pursue long-term careers. But not all is wrong. On Monday, in one such battle a young mother from Himachal Pradesh was fighting in the Supreme Court to be with her child who needed her, the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said the participation of women in the workforce is a constitutional entitlement and denying mothers child care leaves violates that. The mother in question was an assistant professor in a government college and said that the Himachal Pradesh government denied her child care leaves. Her child suffers from a genetic condition. The Supreme Court, in a welcome intervention, pointed out that the state, as a model employer, cannot be oblivious to such concerns.

PM Modi hit out at the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu, accusing the party of hate politics and of creating divisions. There was a sharp counter from MK Stalin who said the PM's visits to the state were akin to those of a migratory bird. Arvind Kejriwal will remain in jail, the Delhi High Court said Tuesday afternoon as it knocked back the Chief Minister's challenge to his March 21 arrest in the alleged liquor policy scam. Mr Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party responded swiftly, confirming, within the hour, that it will appeal to the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court today directed the State Bank of India (SBI) to disclose all details related to electoral bonds that allowed individuals and companies to make donations to political parties. This must include the "serial number" of each bond, said a five-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud.

Average life expectancy in India was 67.7 years in 2022 - up from 62.7 a year earlier - and gross national income (GNI, per capita) has increased to $6951, a jump of 6.3 per cent in 12 months, the United Nation's Human Development Index, or HDI, report has said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced the development of "Mission Divyastra" -- an indigenously developed, landmark weapons system that alters the country's geopolitic and strategic position and significantly changes the situation in southeast Asia. The Agni-5 MIRV missile, developed by defence research centre DRDO for over a decade, took its first flight today. The new weapon system of DRDO (Defence Research Development Organisation) has Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology, which ensures that a single missile can deploy multiple war heads and hit targets at different locations simultaneously. This is technology that China has which India does now as well. In a landmark verdict, the Supreme Court today ruled that an MP or MLA cannot claim immunity from prosecution if he/she is accused of taking a bribe for a vote or a speech in the House. The judgment by the seven-judge Constitution bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud explained in the judgment why the legal shield provided to lawmakers will not protect them in cases of bribery. The verdict is seen to be a landmark and cleans up politics and the conduct of politicians inside parliament.

US-based think tank Brookings Institution recently published a study that claimed India has almost eliminated extreme poverty. The report, however, contradicts the numbers estimated by the World Bank, adding that those numbers were based on a privately provided data source.

The Supreme Court made history today by declaring the Aam Aadmi Party's Kuldeep Kumar the winner of last month's Chandigarh mayoral election, ending weeks of controversy after Returning Officer Anil Masih was caught on camera invalidating and discarding eight votes in his favour.  The order - preceded by the counting of votes, including those erroneously rejected, in the courtroom rather than a counting centre - cancels the earlier result that saw the Bharatiya Janata Party's Manoj Sonkar elected Mayor. The returning officer for the elections faces contempt of court action ... He had been warned of prosecution if it was found that he lied to the court.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today sounded the poll bugle for the 2024 elections with a feisty speech in Parliament. In his one hour and 45 minutes long speech, the PM declared that his government will return for a third term setting a target of 370 seats for the BJP and 400 + seats for the NDA.
