What's going on, everybody?! Welcome back to Packernet Podcast Studios! I'm Cal Hutson, and we have made it, folks. We have officially arrived at Packers-Bears weekend!

You know what that means.

It means the Green Bay Packers are getting ready to welcome the Chicago Bears to Lambeau Field, and somewhere in the great city of Chicago, a grown man is probably already arguing with his television about whether this is finally the year things are different.

And listen, I respect the optimism. I really do. Optimism is a beautiful thing. It's what gets you out of bed in the morning. It's what keeps you going when the coffee machine breaks. It's what helps you believe that maybe, just maybe, the lawn will mow itself if you ignore it long enough.

But optimism is also what keeps Bears fans coming back every year.

And I love that about them. I really do. They have a level of hope that should be studied by scientists. You could show a Bears fan seventeen straight minutes of offensive dysfunction, a quarterback throwing the ball into a different time zone, and a defense giving up a touchdown on third-and-twenty, and somehow that fan would look at you and say, "Yeah, but I think we've got something this year."

Something? Absolutely! You've got something. I'm just not sure it's a football team ready to take over the NFC North.

Now, before anybody accuses me of being a homer, let's get one thing straight. This is a big game, and the Packers have plenty of work to do. Green Bay is sitting at 2–2. Chicago comes in at 3–1. The Bears have momentum after beating the New York Jets, and the Packers are coming off a hard-fought 17–14 win over Tampa Bay.

This isn't a game Green Bay can sleepwalk through. This isn't a game where you can show up, put on the green and gold, and expect the football gods to hand you a victory because your grandpa owned a Bart Starr jersey.

You have to earn this one.

But here's what I like about this matchup: there are very real ways for Green Bay to win this game, and there are some significant questions on the Chicago side that the Packers need to make them answer.

So today, we're going to talk about the Packers, the latest injury updates, what we learned from Tampa Bay, what the Bears are bringing into Lambeau, what Chicago's injuries mean, the matchups that could decide this game, and finally, my prediction for tomorrow.

And yes, we're going to have a little fun with the Bears along the way.

Now, I don't know about you, but I'm already emotionally prepared for this football game. I've got my green and gold ready. I've got my snacks planned. I've got my prediction locked in. And I've got absolutely no intention of being a reasonable, emotionally balanced adult tomorrow afternoon.

My wife could come into the living room and tell me that the kitchen is on fire, and if Jordan Love is in the middle of a third-down conversion, I'm going to say, "Honey, I love you, but can you give me about 12 seconds?"

Ladies and gentlemen! Packers fans! Cheeseheads! People who have been married to Bears fans for twenty years and are just now beginning to question whether that was a wise decision!

I'm Cal Hutson, and today we're talking about the Chicago Bears. That's right. The Chicago Bears. The team that travels to Green Bay this Sunday carrying the hopes, dreams, and emotional baggage of an entire city that has spent generations trying to convince itself that this is finally going to be the year.

And you know what? I respect the optimism. I really do. Optimism is a beautiful thing. It's what gets you out of bed in the morning. It's what makes you believe that maybe your lawn will finally grow in that one dead spot. It's what makes you think you can assemble an entire piece of furniture using instructions that look like they were translated through six different languages.

But optimism has limits, my friends.

At some point, you have to look at the situation and say, "Maybe I should read the instructions. Maybe I should call somebody who knows what they're doing. Maybe I should stop putting the bookshelf together backward."

And that's where I find myself with the Chicago Bears.

Because here we are. Sunday. Lambeau Field. Packers versus Bears. One of the oldest rivalries in professional football, and quite possibly the greatest annual opportunity for Wisconsin residents to become insufferable in the most entertaining way imaginable.

Now, before we get started, I want to make something perfectly clear. I am not saying the Bears are incapable of winning a football game. Of course they're capable. They're professional football players. These aren't twelve guys we pulled out of a grocery store parking lot because they looked athletic while carrying two cases of bottled water.

Well… some of their offensive possessions might occasionally suggest otherwise.

But I'm saying that when the Packers and Bears meet at Lambeau, I have expectations. I expect the Packers to play with confidence. I expect Jordan Love to take advantage of opportunities. I expect our defense to make life uncomfortable for Chicago. And I expect Bears fans to spend the entire fourth quarter explaining why the referee is personally responsible for everything that has gone wrong in their lives since 1985.

That's what rivalry football is all about!

So get comfortable. Grab your favorite beverage. Put on the green and gold. If you've got a Bears fan in the family, maybe check on them before kickoff. Make sure they've eaten something. We want them healthy enough to experience the full emotional journey.

Let's talk about our Green Bay Packers!

All right, let's set the stage.

The Packers are coming off a 17–14 win over Tampa Bay. It wasn't perfect. It wasn't exactly a four-hour football opera in which every player performed flawlessly and the football gods descended from the heavens to personally congratulate Matt LaFleur.

There were mistakes. There were turnovers. There were moments when the offense seemed determined to give the opposing team an unexpected gift basket.

But Green Bay got the win.

And sometimes, in the NFL, you have to appreciate a win that looks a little ugly. You know what I mean? It's like making dinner when you've got three ingredients in the refrigerator, one of them is questionable, and your wife asks whether you're really going to eat that.

You say, "Absolutely. This is a culinary experience."

And then you put hot sauce on it.

That's what the Packers did against Tampa Bay. They found a way to get it done, and now they get to come home for one of the biggest rivalry games of the season.

Meanwhile, Chicago comes into Lambeau with a 3–1 record, and I want to acknowledge that. Three wins is three wins. The Bears have played better football recently, and they're not coming here just to take pictures of the stadium and visit a Culver's on the way home.

They're coming to compete.

We're coming off that 17-14 win over Tampa Bay, and let me tell you something: that game was like buying a brand-new refrigerator and discovering that it works beautifully, except every time you open the door, somebody throws your groceries into the street. The Packers did enough to win. They made some outstanding plays. They protected Jordan Love better. They found a little life in the running game. The defense created turnovers. And then, just when you thought they were about to put the game away, they started handing out footballs like they were complimentary samples at Costco!

What is up, everybody? Cal Hutson here with the Packernet Podcast Network, and today I want to talk about the Green Bay Packers because, man, this is one of those teams where I don't even know if the hardest part is figuring out what the Packers are. I think the harder part is figuring out what the Packers are going to be.

Because after four games, we're sitting here at 2-2.

And if you just look at the record, you might say, "Okay, they're a .500 football team. Nothing special."

But then you actually watch them, and you start thinking, "Wait a minute. There's a lot of talent on this roster."

And then you look at the injuries and you go, "Oh... never mind."

And then you watch Jordan Love throw a couple of touchdowns, you watch Matthew Golden make plays, you watch Tucker Kraft continue to develop, you watch this defense make big plays, and you think, "No, wait. Maybe there's something here."

And then they fumble twice in the fourth quarter against Tampa Bay, throw an interception in the red zone, commit ten penalties, and suddenly you're sitting on your couch talking to your television like you're personally responsible for the Packers' offensive game plan.

That's where this team is right now.

They're talented.

And I know that sounds like a very simple statement, but after watching this team through the first four weeks of the season, I'm actually not sure there's anything simple about it.

Green Bay went down to Tampa Bay and beat the Buccaneers 17-14. The Packers are now 2-2. And I think that's probably the most important place to start today because I don't want to do what we tend to do as football fans, which is immediately take one game and turn it into a referendum on the entire season.

If the Packers lose, everybody's terrible. If the Packers win, everybody's great. If Jordan Love throws two touchdowns, he's a franchise quarterback. If he throws an interception, suddenly we're drafting somebody else in April.

Alright, everybody, welcome back to the Packernet Podcast. Big Sal here, and I gotta tell you, I am sitting here the morning after a Green Bay Packers victory, and I'm trying to decide exactly how I'm supposed to feel about this football team. Because on one hand, my goodness, folks, they won the football game. That's the first thing. That's the most important thing. You go down to Tampa Bay, you walk out of there with a 17-14 victory, you improve to 2-2, and you're coming home with a win. So I'm not gonna sit here and pretend like that doesn't matter. It matters. Wins matter. You don't apologize for wins in the National Football League.

But at the same time, I think everybody watching that game knows what I'm about to say. You watched that game and you thought, "Okay... but what the hell was that?" Because this was one of those games where Green Bay showed you some things that you desperately wanted to see, and then they immediately showed you some of the same things that have been driving everybody crazy for the first three weeks. And that's actually what makes this game so interesting to me. Because I don't think the answer is, "The Packers are terrible." I don't think the answer is, "The Packers are awesome." I think the answer is that we're starting to get a little bit more information about what this team actually is.

And that's what I want to talk about today. Not panic. Not, "Oh my God, we're doomed." Not, "We're going to the Super Bowl because we beat Tampa Bay." Let's just look at what happened. Let's observe it. Let's figure out what it means. And then let's talk about what this football team has to do going forward if they're going to become the team everybody thought they could be when this season started.

Welcome back to Packernet Podcast Studios. I'm Cal Hutson, and today is game day. The Green Bay Packers are heading into Tampa Bay, and I think we have reached the point where all the talking is over. We've spent the last week talking about Atlanta, talking about the offensive line, talking about Jayden Reed being lost for the season, talking about Kevin Zeitler coming home to Wisconsin, talking about Jordan Love, talking about the defense, and talking about whether this Packers team is actually any good. Well, today we get to find out. Green Bay is 1-2, Tampa Bay is 0-3, and while this is certainly not an elimination game in October, it is a game the Packers really need to win. A loss today puts Green Bay at 1-3 and creates a completely different conversation. A win gets them back to 2-2 and gives them an opportunity to put the first three weeks behind them. So what does Green Bay actually need to do to win this football game?

The first thing is probably the most obvious, but it is also the most important: Green Bay has to run the football better. I'm not saying they need to suddenly rush for 200 yards. I'm not saying Josh Jacobs needs to become Barry Sanders today. I'm saying the Packers need to establish enough of a running game that Tampa Bay cannot sit there and say, "Okay, we're going to make Jordan Love beat us." Through three games, Green Bay has rushed for just 146 yards total. That's 48.7 yards per game, and that's an enormous problem. You cannot consistently play good offensive football when the defense has no reason to respect your running game. You don't have to dominate on the ground. You just have to make the defense pay attention to it.

Alright, everybody, welcome back to another edition of the Packernet Podcast Studios, and you know what time it is. This is Big Sal, and we are getting ready for some Green Bay Packers football. We are heading down to Tampa Bay, and I don't know about you guys, but I have reached that point in the week where I'm tired of talking about what went wrong against Atlanta. I'm tired of talking about the offensive line. I'm tired of talking about Jayden Reed's injury. I'm tired of hearing about whether Jordan Love is good enough. I'm tired of everybody trying to figure out if this Packers team is a contender or a pretender after three freaking games. At some point, ladies and gentlemen, you have to play the football game. And that's what we're getting Sunday. The Green Bay Packers are 1-2. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 0-3. And both of these teams are walking into this game with a whole lot of questions and a whole lot of reasons to desperately want a victory.

Now, before we get too far into this thing, I want to say something that I think gets lost when we talk about the Packers right now. This season is not over. I know, shocking. I know some people on the internet are going to be disappointed by that statement because apparently if you lose one football game, your season is over, your coach needs to be fired, your quarterback needs to be traded, your general manager needs to be launched into Lake Michigan, and everybody needs to start talking about the draft. That's not how this works. The Packers are 1-2. That's not where anybody wanted them to be, but it is three games. Three games. We have 14 games left after Tampa. There is a lot of football left to be played. But here's the part where I'm going to agree with the people who are concerned. Green Bay can't keep playing the way it played against Atlanta and expect everything to magically fix itself. Something has to change.

And I don't know about you, but something about that just feels like a very bad week to be a Buccaneers fan.

Now listen, I want to be fair here because Big Sal is nothing if not fair. The Buccaneers are not a terrible football team because they're 0-3. They are an NFL football team. They have professionals. They have coaches. They have guys who can run, guys who can hit, guys who can throw, and guys who are considerably more athletic than yours truly. So I'm not sitting here telling you that Green Bay is going down there and they're playing against a bunch of guys they found at the local Tampa YMCA. No. These are NFL players.

But here's the problem, Tampa. You are 0-3. You have lost three football games. You have scored your way into a hole, and now you are about to start a rookie quarterback who has never started an NFL game. And who is standing across from him? Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers defense. Now THAT is what Big Sal calls an interesting situation.

This is one of those weeks where you almost don't know where to start because it feels like every time you refresh the Packers news, there's another story. The Packers are 1-2, they're heading down to Tampa Bay for a Week 4 matchup against the Buccaneers, the offensive line has basically been thrown into a blender, Green Bay has added veteran after veteran up front, Kevin Zeitler is now officially a Packer, and then on the other side of the equation, we've got the brutal news that Jayden Reed is going to miss the rest of the season after undergoing neck surgery. So yeah, there's a lot to talk about today.

And I want to start with the thing that I think is going to determine whether the Packers can actually get this season moving in the right direction, and that's the offensive line. Because let's be honest, folks, the offensive line has been a problem. We saw it against Atlanta. We saw the struggles in the running game. We saw Jordan Love dealing with pressure. We saw an offense that just couldn't consistently stay on schedule. And the Packers responded by doing something that we don't see very often from this organization. They went shopping. Laken Tomlinson, Mekhi Becton and now Kevin Zeitler have all been added in a matter of days. That's three former first-round offensive linemen brought into the building in one week, and collectively those three guys have more than 400 career regular-season starts.

Alright everybody, Big Sal here, and Packers fans, we have ourselves a little offensive-line emergency going on in Green Bay. And when I say emergency, I'm not talking about the kind where you call 911 and somebody shows up with a siren. I'm talking about the kind where Brian Gutekunst looks at the offensive line, looks at what happened against Atlanta, looks at Jordan Love getting pressured, looks at the running game trying to find daylight that apparently does not exist, and says, "Okay, maybe we should do something about this." And folks, they are doing something about it. The Green Bay Packers have added veteran offensive linemen Laken Tomlinson and Mekhi Becton, and I think these moves tell us a whole lot about where this football team believes its biggest problems are right now.

Let's start with Laken Tomlinson, because this isn't some random guy who just wandered into the Packers' facility carrying a football and asking if there were any jobs available. Tomlinson is a veteran. He's been around the NFL for a long time, he's played a ton of football, and he's got an enormous amount of experience at guard. That's important because when you're trying to stabilize an offensive line, experience matters. You want guys who have been through different defensive schemes, different types of pass rushers, different blitz packages, different game situations, and different offensive systems. You don't want everybody standing around in the huddle looking at each other like they're trying to figure out who's supposed to block the guy who just ran through the A-gap.

Alright Packers fans, welcome back in. Cal Hutson here, and folks, we have some breaking news coming out of Green Bay, and honestly, I think this is one of those moves that tells us a lot more about what the Packers think about their football team than just the name of the player they signed. The Green Bay Packers have agreed to a one-year deal with veteran offensive guard Kevin Zeitler, and if you're sitting there going, "Wait a minute, didn't the Packers just sign Laken Tomlinson? Didn't they just bring in Mekhi Becton?" Yes. Yes, they did. And that's exactly why this is so interesting. Green Bay is making some serious changes to this offensive line, and they're doing it because what we saw against Atlanta clearly wasn't good enough.

Kevin Zeitler is a name Packers fans should recognize. He's a 14-year NFL veteran, he's got 213 career starts, and he spent last season with the Tennessee Titans, where he started all 16 games he played. He's also a Wisconsin guy. He grew up in Waukesha, played his college football at Wisconsin, and now, after spending more than a decade playing all over the NFL, he's coming home to play for the Green Bay Packers. And I know some people will say, "Well, who cares where he's from? Can he block?" And you know what? That's fair. I don't care if the guy was born in Lambeau Field if he can't block anybody. But in this particular case, we're talking about a veteran guard who has spent his entire career playing at a very high level and has an enormous amount of NFL experience.

And that's really what Green Bay is buying here. They're not getting 2014 Kevin Zeitler. They're not getting some 25-year-old superstar who's going to come in and dominate the league for the next decade. Kevin Zeitler is 36 years old. But that's not why you sign him. You sign him because you've got a young quarterback, you've got an offense that needs stability, you've got a running game that has struggled, and you've got an offensive line that just got absolutely exposed against Atlanta. You're bringing in a guy who has been around the block a few times, who's played in big games, who's seen every defensive front imaginable, and who knows what he's doing at the guard position.

And I think that's important because the Packers aren't necessarily looking for somebody to come in here and become an All-Pro. They're looking for somebody who can raise the floor of this offensive line. That's the way I'd describe this entire move. Green Bay needs fewer disasters. They need fewer missed assignments. They need fewer plays where a defensive lineman comes screaming through the middle of the line untouched. They need Jordan Love to have time to actually run the offense. They need the running backs to have somewhere to go. They need the receivers to have enough time for routes to develop. That's what this is about.

Think about what happened against Atlanta. The Packers scored just 14 points. They ran the football nine times for 17 yards. Seventeen yards. That's the kind of number where you look at the stat sheet and wonder if somebody accidentally left out a digit. And obviously, it's not all on the offensive line. Football doesn't work that way. There are running-back decisions, there are play-calling decisions, there are defensive fronts, there are situations in games. But when you're watching an offense struggle that badly to run the football and you're watching the quarterback deal with pressure, the offensive line is going to be one of the first places you look.

And apparently, Brian Gutekunst looked there too, because suddenly we're seeing veteran offensive linemen arrive in Green Bay one after another. Laken Tomlinson was added earlier this week. Mekhi Becton was brought in as another veteran option. And now you've got Kevin Zeitler. That's not some random coincidence. The Packers looked at what happened, evaluated the situation, and decided they needed more experience up front.

And today we're going to do something a little different.

We're going to take a step back.

We're three games into the 2026 season.

The Packers are 1–2.

We've seen the good.

We've seen the bad.

And then Thursday night against Atlanta...

we saw the ugly.

Really ugly.

Thirty-five to fourteen.

At Lambeau Field.

The Falcons came into Green Bay and absolutely controlled that football game.

Atlanta finished with 498 total yards compared to Green Bay's 328.

They dominated time of possession.

They ran for 242 yards.

Green Bay ran for 17.

The Packers scored on their second possession and then basically disappeared offensively for stretches of the rest of the game.

They allowed 27 consecutive points.

And Matt LaFleur described it afterward as a "humbling night."

I think that's fair.

But here's why I wanted to do this episode.

Because I don't want to spend another hour yelling about Atlanta.

Atlanta happened.

It's over.

We can't change it.

What we CAN do is ask:

What exactly do we have here?

Who are the Packers?

What are their strengths?

What are their weaknesses?

Which players do I trust?

Which players make me nervous?

Which positions do I think are good enough?

Which positions need to improve?

And most importantly...

Can this team still become what we thought it could become?

Because I don't think we know that yet.

Three games is enough to identify problems.

It isn't necessarily enough to determine the final identity of a football team.

So let's go through this thing.

Position by position.

Player by player.

And I'm going to give you my opinion.

Not what Twitter thinks.

Not what ESPN thinks.

Not what some guy with a profile picture of a cheesehead and 47 followers thinks.

My opinion.

Let's get into it.

Jordan Love.

Let's start with the biggest one.

Because every Packers conversation eventually comes back to the quarterback.

Jordan Love has shown me enough that I'm still completely comfortable saying:

He's our guy.

Now...

Has he been perfect?

Absolutely not.

Against Atlanta, Love threw 53 passes.

He completed 28 of them for 312 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

There were good throws.

There were bad throws.

There were missed opportunities.

But here's what I don't want to do.

I don't want to look at a game where the Packers ran for 17 yards and conclude:

"Jordan Love is the problem."

That's too simplistic.

The quarterback cannot fix everything.

If you can't run the football...

if the offensive line is banged up...

if you're constantly behind...

if you're playing from long-yardage situations...

the quarterback's job gets harder.

That doesn't mean Love gets a free pass.

He needs to be better.

He needs to be more consistent.

And he needs to stop having stretches where the offense completely loses rhythm.

But I'm still firmly in the camp that says:

Jordan Love is good enough to win with.

And I think he's capable of being better than what we've seen so far.

My grade right now?

I'd give Jordan Love a B-minus.

Not because I think he's bad.

Because I think he's capable of playing at a higher level.

And I expect him to.

I'm not going to tell you we need to trade everybody.

Because Packers Twitter has already hired, fired, traded, released, benched, promoted and executed approximately 47 people since the fourth quarter started.

I'm not participating in that.

Because this is football.

The fact of the matter is, the Packers have built a sustainable winner for decades, not by chasing every shiny new toy on the open market, but by doing things the right way, the hard way, the intelligent way. This is not a new concept, folks. Ryan has been saying it for nine years on this show, over twenty-seven hundred episodes, and he was right then, just as I am right now. This show has called it at the time, consistently.

Think about it. These free agents, by definition, are players who couldn't secure a long-term deal with their original team. There is a reason for that, folks. These are not always the cream of the crop. These are often players with red flags: injury history, declining play, age-related decline, or just being wildly overvalued by desperate teams trying to paper over bigger cracks in their roster with a big name. And yet, every single year, you get these jagoffs on the Twitters, screaming about why "we" did not go out and spend a billion dollars on some guy who is going to be a bust in two years, or who will demand a trade when things get tough. It is maddening to listen to. It really is.
