Our AJ rewind to celebrate his 80th birthday continues.  The incredible story of a breakfast meet with Bernie Ecclestone which lead to his sudden withdrawal from a race! The 1980 Formula One World Champion is about to clock up a special birthday so we’re bringing back his Feature Ep to celebrate the milestone. AJ will be 80 on November the 2nd. We originally spoke with him back in 2022 in the lead up to the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park.   For a time Rusty shared the F1 desk and set at Channel 10 with the great man for the network’s live GP coverage and many of you will fondly remember him alongside the late great Daryl Eastlake at 9 before that.  Alan’s always been a straight shooter.  You’re never in any doubt about his view on something and he earned the right to those opinions. Growing up in the Apple Isle and being wowed by some absolute heroes of the day at the legendary Longford track. Borrowing money from his Mum and channeling it into a race car. Getting into the car business and working in Sydney’s epicenter then on Parramatta Road…the lessons it taught him for the future.  Chasing the open wheeler dream and going to England only to be told he probably didn’t have enough dough and he should turn around and go back to Australia! Changing tack to win some big races in Asia and keeping an open wheeler on the wall for decades before restoring it (period correct) and hitting the track in it again. Plus a recent mission for Ford to run a GT3 car in Japan with some gun international drivers and why he believes in “saying yes to opportunity and working it out later”. Rusty headed to Wellington for this one for the announcement that Race of Champions is coming back down under for two shows in January 2027. It’s the first time since the inception of ROC that the event will be staged in New Zealand. The boss, Fredrik Johnsson, who founded ROC back in 1988 with rally legend Michele Mouton, talks to us about signing F1 stars Sebastian Vettel and Valtteri Bottas….why it didn’t take much arm twisting! Leaving school at a young age but always being industrious and with an eye for opportunity. Becoming a member of the Gippsland Car Club and helping to build the Morwell Hill Climb. Earning enough to buy a rare beauty - a Zephsca (pictured). Racing the Sandown 500 in an HD Holden and convincing the local dealer that it would help them sell cars. Riding shotgun with his son Paul well before ‘The Dude’ won Bathurst and what that GC Speedway experience in a Bomber was like? From swimming to singing and ultimately ending up managing the internationally respected Race Driver Training complex on the Gold Coast. The opportunities she saw as Paul Morris championed the brand and now working with all sorts of manufacturers right round Australia. School runs with a young Broc Feeney and Nash Morris and using her love of elite sport and PT qualifications to improve the fitness of some of Supercars biggest names. Learning to waterski with Anton De Pasquale, coping with knock-backs and why Carina is a firm believer that “success leaves clues”. While there was some study in the early years it’s been hands on learning and her inner drive that has helped Norwell become a Gold Coast destination, something she credits her tight-knit team for. What it meant to be named a finalist in the GC Bulletin Women of the Year - Stars in Tourism award and why the guidence they give young instructors can help on their racing journey. A long form feature interview like this is something new for the Penrite Racing team owner & we’re delighted he’s joined us in the Garage studio. Building golf courses in the early days including one for the Sultan of Brunei. A window into his success mindset - stopping to savour the 2025 Bathurst 1000 win isn’t something he did for too long, it’s the same in business. It’s not that long since we spoke to the great man on the pod! Back in July 1980, he was part of a 500cc Grand Prix-winning team in Belgium with a young Randy Mamola. It was Randy’s first premier-class victory and the first of many for JB. Graziano Rossi was in that same race. Years later, JB would become crew chief for his son, Valentino, who became one of the sport’s all-time greats, a rider synonymous with the number 46. One of the all time greats of Motorsport from the Tasman region is finally on the pod. Ken Smith has been racing since 1958 and he’s still going! The family’s love for another kind of horsepower and how Kenny would sometimes hold up the motor racing schedule to check how his horse went. Competing against (and socializing after) with some absolute legends of the 60’s and early 70’s….Graham Hill, Bruce McLaren, Jimmy Clark, Jack Brabham and many more. His gravitation to single seater racing and winning the prestigious New Zealand Grand Prix for the first time in 1976. He then had an agonizing 14 year wait to do it again in 1990 and then another 14 year gap to his third in 2004. Even at age 84 Kenny is still razor sharp and the memories that surround us in his workshop where we recorded make for constant conversation starters. How he helped bank roll a good portion of Roberto Moreno’s summer of racing in NZ without dipping into his own pockets. (You can hear more about this in Roberto’s Feature Ep in our library). And a friendship with Jimmy Richards that dates back to their early days. Awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 1987 for services to Motorsport Ken Smith wasn’t about to let that be a book end to his career. There was still so much more he wanted to do. His eye for talent and the significant help he gave in the background to sure up the future of some modern day stars. Working with Indycar great Scott Dixon, World Sportscar and Le Mans 24 hour winner Brendon Hartley, 4-time Bathurst winner Greg Murphy (in his early days) as well as Shane van Gisbergen and Liam Lawson. That’s the title of a new book by respected writer Stewart Bell and he’s in the Garage studio to talk about it in a special bonus shortcast in our feed this week.
