Are you a law firm owner looking to surprise and spoil your clients? In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer Podcast, Tyson chats with Heather Olson on the strategic use of swag—promotional items—in marketing for legal and professional services. The discussion covers how to select high-quality, practical, and sustainable swag that resonates with your target audience, enhances brand recognition, and boosts community visibility.
Promotional items and swag are a great way to market to your consumers or clients and build trust with them. When creating swag, it is important to understand and identify your target audience. If you are a law firm, your target audience will most likely be individuals who are older or maybe have a lot of money. You can research promotional items that connect with individuals of a certain demographic. Maybe these clients like golf or items that they can use in their kitchens. It is crucial to understand who you are serving. These items are also great in a personalized way. If you have clients that you are close with or have worked with for a long period of time, personalizing a gift can really strengthen the lawyer-client relationship. Put in the extra effort, especially if it is the holidays or celebrating the end of a case. Think about high end items like Turkish towels or leather wine bags. You can also personalize bulk items for your employees, like glassware or notebooks.

Are you a lawyer looking to become better at video marketing? In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer Podcast, marketing expert Ryan Webber addresses lawyers at the MaxLawCon event, urging them to embrace video marketing to grow their practices in 2025. He debunks common excuses lawyers have for avoiding video, shares the success of his wife’s real estate law YouTube channel, and highlights how video content builds trust and attracts clients.
Marketing has changed over time and more so with the rise of the internet and social media. Many people are looking you up before they call you to get to know you and your business better. Because of this, it is important to have a presence online and have a good marketing strategy. Many lawyers have excuses for why they don’t want to be on social media or record videos as part of marketing. Whether it be not knowing how to act on camera or how to edit, not focusing on marketing can keep you from making money and getting a good reach.
When focusing on marketing, it is important to build a moat. A moat is doing something different and unique that AI or your competitors can’t do. Think about something that makes you stand out from others. Maybe it's your creativity or the type of camera equipment you use when making videos. This will make it difficult for people to copy you. Viewers love paying attention to things that are different and unique, so create something only you can do!

In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer Podcast, host Tyson Mutrux interviews Chris Earley about his unconventional path to founding a law firm, the challenges he faced in the legal profession, and his journey of personal growth. He discusses the pivotal role of mentorship, mindset shifts, and self-care practices like meditation.

Being a lawyer can be very tough, especially with the types of cases seen and it can lead to irrational and heated behaviour that can affect other people. Chris tells listeners to pause and really take some time to think about your feelings before you potentially make a mistake, like sending a fiery email. It is also important to think about healthy alternatives like therapy to work through your issues.
It is really important for lawyers to be authentic. Being real and vulnerable is the best way to connect with people and network with others in the industry. Are you a law firm owner looking to learn more about how to be a good leader? In this solo episode of the Guild Live Show, Tyson reflects on work-life balance, leadership, and the guilt many law firm owners feel about stepping away from the office. Sharing his own experiences, Tyson explores the psychological challenges of letting go, the importance of trusting your team, and why true leadership is measured by outcomes and freedom.
Tyson shares some insights on feelings of guilt law firm owners have when being away from the office. A lot of firm owners tend to tie their value to their presence, which is where this guilt can stem from. There can be thoughts of things going wrong in the office or fires not being put out. To move away from this mindset, it is important to ensure you can trust your team to handle things while you are away. Whether it's delegating work to specific people or asking for updates on a recurring basis, these things can help you feel more at ease and allow that guilt to disappear.
Tyson talks about visible versus meaningful effort. For leaders, being present in the office doing things does not mean anything unless you are working on the right things. You have to show up and work with intention to ensure your firm is successful. If you know there are improvements that need to be made, show up and outline steps to get that done. This shows you are serious about making sure your firm grows and succeeds.

Are you a law firm owner looking to change how you run your business? In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer Podcast, Mathew Kerbis, a lawyer and founder of Subscription Attorney discusses how AI is transforming legal work and why the traditional billable hour model is becoming obsolete.
Mathew talks about the framework for using AI effectively within the legal space. It is important to remember that AI tools, like ChatGPT, are not calculators. They have biases and are reinforced by the humans who designed them. They are also not perfect and should be used as an aid. For the legal space, AI should be used to give you all the information before giving you an answer.Mathew delves into the topic of the billable hour model and why firms should move to subscription based models. The billable hour includes doing a bunch of tasks for a client within a set time frame for a price. If a client only pays you for one hour, you are only working for that hour. But switching to a subscription based model with AI in mind means you can scale your business better. You can develop better relationships with clients because there is predictable revenue.

Are you looking for some insights on how to create a healthy firm culture? In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer Podcast, Tyson interviews law firm co-founder, Travis Howard about his journey from corporate life to building a firm with a strong, authentic culture rooted in shared values, transparency, and conscious leadership. They discuss practical strategies for defining and sustaining company culture, managing ego, and fostering emotional intelligence. As a law firm owner who can control the culture of that firm, it is important for the culture to mimic that of the owners. It is important to take shared experiences of the owners and use those to design the foundations of the culture from that. You don’t want to create a culture that simply mimics that of another because you feel that is what your workers want. Using it as inspiration, you understand your own values and that of your staff and create something dynamic.
Travis shares some practices that enable growth for a firm. One practice is to be honest with each other about what the core principles are for the firm and follow them. For Travis, his firm still does formal reviews, which began at the start of the firm, to talk about things staff are displeased with and things they can do better. This really builds trust for staff and allows for open dialogue.

Maybe someone challenges a belief or some personal irritation is expressed to a group of people. They can be created in a few different ways in a team setting.
It is important to know when to execute or abandon sparks. Maybe executing a spark makes sense when you have a strong team dynamic. Do you want to improve client communication for your firm? In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer Podcast, Devon Slovensky, founder of a Southwestern Virginia Family Law Firm, shares how her team maintains high standards of client communication amid rapid growth. Speaking at a MaxLawCon 2025, Devon introduces the “client happiness call” initiative—which has improved client communication for her firm.
A firm’s client communication can really make or break its success. Devon shares how her firm’s client happiness calls have been used to determine gaps in communication. Doing this ensures that attorneys are held accountable to what they say they will do. Having these calls also ensures clients are prioritized and attorneys are doing their jobs. Creating a system for this can include having a client happiness coordinator and some sort of CRM to manage these calls and input and retain information.Devon speaks to unhappy clients and how to unearth this and understand this as a lawyer. Most of her clients are satisfied, but it can be tough to admit when you as a lawyer can’t deliver something 100% because of whatever issue that presents itself. Understanding this can create confidence in a lawyer in having better communication with clients on realistic expectations. Avoiding unhappy clients includes keeping them up to date on their case, explaining things that they don’t understand and being honest about next steps.

After receiving a text from this person asking about a job at his firm, Tyson reflects on professionalism and what to look for when hiring good talent.
When it comes to hiring for a firm, it is important to assess fit and look at certain qualities in a candidate. When looking to hire, sometimes you might find someone that checks all of your boxes and might actually be a really good fit. But, it is important to find someone that takes it to the next level. Are you a law firm owner looking for ways to build team culture? In this episode, Kevin Cheney, a law firm owner and co-founder, shares how intentional culture-building can be for a firm’s growth. He explains why culture—more than marketing or processes—drives retention, recruitment, client experience, and resilience. He offers a practical three-step framework for leaders to assess, envision, and build their ideal culture.
Kevin shares some steps to building culture for a firm. The first is what your culture is today. Be brutally honest with yourself and admit what you are doing right and wrong. Another thing is to think about the future of this culture. Map out a five year plan - what needs to change and how can you change it. From there, decide what is important for your firm to have in order to be successful. At the end of the day, a positive team culture drives retention and improves employee experience.
It is important to ensure your employees bond so they can work better together. Create opportunities for your staff to connect. For Kevin, he organizes happy hours and potlucks as ways for employees to have some fun and disconnect. Another option is to organize team bonding activities that build confidence and trust. Ensure to make these optional so staff are not forced but encouraged to participate.Listen in to learn more!

Hamid introduces his three-part power model and discusses how these elements are transforming legal staffing, operations, and profitability.
Hamid shares his three-part power model and how it can change hiring for firms. The model includes ⅓ local staff, ⅓ virtual staff and ⅓ AI. Including some of each can really transform a law firm and allow operations and staffing to benefit from aspects that might seem very different. Virtual staff can cut down your costs and AI can allow you to figure out ways to take some work away from busy local staff and simplify it.There are areas of a firm that would thrive using AI. AI can supplement what is going on and shift people into more customer facing roles where they are helping clients. Roles like legal assistance, document collections and document summaries can benefit from the use of AI. The conversation also covers neuroscience-backed learning strategies, the importance of embracing individuality over mediocrity, and agile marketing tactics like fast advertising..
The founder of Mo Martech shares some bitter truths that challenge the current marketing norms. One is that marketing is not all about generating revenue. If you focus on that alone, you are forced to kind of do anything that sticks and chase leads for instant gratification. What you want to do is build affinity and relationships with consumers, which really requires patience. The second truth is that good marketing strategies involve consistent, multiyear narratives based on the psychology of the consumer. You need to understand over time how a consumer reacts or what draws their attention. From this, you can develop and maintain a good marketing strategy. In order to engage consumers with marketing, you need to be authentic and have something that fits your brand. Authenticity is the guardrail and is the thing that will connect your brand or product with the consumer. They need to feel you are authentic and that your marketing is genuine and real. Not every brand belongs in every conversation and you need to think if your brand has a reason to be in the moment as it relates to your marketing. Take some time to think about that as you develop your marketing strategy.

At the Maximum Law Conference, Rachel McGarry shares practical strategies for law firms to move from constant chaos to efficient, proactive operations. Drawing on her experience in estate planning and legal tech, Rachel emphasizes identifying root problems before adopting new technology.
As a law firm, it is important to understand the recurring problems that occur before you implement solutions. Law firms are busy and chaotic places, with fires starting up everywhere. It is the nature of the field. As an owner, you need to shift your mindset to that of an engineer. You need to create sustainable solutions that will provide predictable success and growth without all the overwhelm.Doing this involves a few things. First, you need to create a blueprint to figure out what your firm needs. This will allow you to create a framework that will help form your vision. From there, you will find out what your frictions are that are causing fires for your firm which will lead to designing your solution.
Rachel provides listeners with steps to take to see immediate results. One thing is to track the fires happening in your firm for 2 weeks. Get the whole team involved where everyone tracks the fires they are dealing with. You will be able to determine the patterns that are happening and can set one, measurable goal to overcome them.. Another step to take is auditing your clients at least once a month. This is a way to ensure there is good client communication frequently to update them on their case.

Jay shares actionable tips on crafting attention-grabbing subject lines, debunks common myths about spam filters, and highlights the importance of growing a targeted email database.Jay provides some tips for creating interesting subject lines for emails. One thing to consider is using white space. This includes having a subject line and then a pre header. A pre header is a second subject line and is usually in grey text. With this tactic, many people are intrigued because there is so much open space that they wonder what the email is about. For Jay, this saw open rates increase by 25%.
Jay and Tyson chat about the key metrics for email marketing. One metric is to understand your target audience through developing an Ideal Customer Profile (ICP). This is creating a description for the ideal customer who will benefit from your business. Identifying your ICP will help a business tailor their marketing. In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer Podcast, Tyson interviews Matt Anderson, an attorney and real estate investor, about his unconventional journey blending law, entrepreneurship, and property investing. Matt shares lessons from multi-level marketing and business ownership and emphasizes the importance of hiring for culture fit.
For lawyers who are new to the entrepreneurial space, it is possible to build a firm that runs on minimal daily involvement. In order to do this, you need to let go of a lot of the day to day work of practicing law as well as partner and hire individuals who can help you achieve that. Partner with another lawyer who has the same vision as you. After that, look at hiring good lawyers who will do all the necessary work that will bring you success. That way, you can spend your day doing what you want to do.
Matt provides some insights on hiring staff based on culture and character, rather than experience. One way to do this is utilizing personality tests, inner metrics and multiple interviews to find the right fit. For Matt, anyone can learn a skill or aspects of a job. But, not everyone has the character or personality to work for a certain firm. As an owner, you need to determine what kind of firm you want to run and hire people based on what matters to you most.

Are you a lawyer looking for some tips on AI technology? In this episode of Maximum Lawyer, Tyson and expert guest Martin Kravchenko discuss the practical use of AI technologies—such as vibe coding, AI agents, and tools like Gemini, ChatGPT, and Notebook LM—in legal and personal injury law firms.
Tyson and Martin discuss bottlenecks within firms, especially with tech versus human bottlenecks. For law firms, Martin suggests that people are the biggest bottlenecks if you don't have the right amount of staff in your firm doing the right work. With a small firm, the people are important. As a firm increases, technology can become the bottleneck because there has to be a good, streamlined system in place to ensure people are able to do their jobs. If a good, solid CRM is not in place, the whole firm can really suffer.
Martin speaks about his use of an AI tool called Gemini and the benefits of it. One thing is people can access it through their Google Workspace and Gmail, which makes it easy and efficient. It can also process documents better, which for lawyers who work with medical records, can be really handy. Many people struggle with badly scanned PDF documents, which for Gemini, it can read quite well. This can make any lawyer's life a lot easier when preparing for a case.

Are you an attorney looking for a place to get reliable vendor reviews? In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer Podcast, Tyson and Becca introduce “Becca’s List,” a new, free review platform designed for law firm owners to share authentic feedback on vendors and service providers.
Tyson and Becca share about how Becca’s List came to be. After hearing from a Guild member about spending money on a vendor and not getting the services they paid for, Becca and Tyson created a product list where legal vendors can be reviewed. This can then be used by members who are looking for vendors and can do some research before they commit to spending money with them. This is a great tool for new law firms who don't have a big budget and need to be mindful of the vendors they partner with.

Tyson and Becca go through the development journey of Becca’s List. The website uses smiley faces to rate vendors, which does not leave users confused on how to use the platform. The development process has been tricky due to working with developers who usually have more say in how something can be created. The process also involved coming to a happy medium on certain aspects of the platform and this is important when collaborating on a product.Tune in to today’s episode and checkout the full show notes here.

Are you a business owner looking for tips for success? In this episode of The Guild Live Show, Tyson delivers a concise yet insightful discussion on negotiation tactics, ChatGPT usage trends, and the realities behind AI research tools. Tyson critically examines bold claims about Thomson Reuters’ AI system, shares practical lessons for startups, and reflects on the importance of empathy in online interactions following a recent tragedy.Tyson shares some effective negotiation strategies for lawyers. Being a successful negotiator involves spending a lot of time on anticipated areas of agreement. This means focusing on where you align with a client. It also involves planning more efficiently as opposed to the amount of time. Planning efficiently makes all the difference when you are in the negotiation phase of a deal. If you sit down and think through how you want the negotiation to go and have everything outlined for the discussion, it can really play out in your favour.
Tyson provides some common mistakes made by startups that can actually lead to their downfall. One of the common mistakes is only hiring people based on experience. Because startups are so new, it needs the right people with the mindset to scale the business to where it needs to be. Experience won’t matter if they do not fit with the vision of the business. Another mistake is wearing too many hats as the owner. Are you an attorney looking for tips on how to build a social media presence? In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer, Tyson interviews a former news anchor and media trainer, Kerry Barrett about how lawyers can improve their on-camera presence. Kerry shares practical tips for appearing more natural, including mindset shifts, breathing exercises, wardrobe advice, and script-marking techniques for teleprompters.Kerry provides some tips on how lawyers can be more conversational on camera. Lawyers live in the language of their expertise and they tend to work in high stake settings where speech is very formal. But being on camera involves having a conversation with the viewer and making sure they understand you. A great tip is to imagine you are having a conversation with one person. Whether it's a friend or family member, this can help change the way you speak and can make your speech more easy going.
Kerry shares the types of content lawyers should create to help with branding. Content for lawyers should be demand generation, trust building content and anonymized case studies. Content like this is focused on being on top of trends, building trust with your audience and analyzing case studies that might help someone who is going through something similar. Doing this content on rotation (ie. once every week) is a great way to build a following and get clients!

In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer Podcast, Jacqueline and Adam Williams, co-founders of Pennywise Tax Strategies, share their journey from traditional tax roles to building a firm focused on proactive, year-round tax planning for small businesses and law firms.
Proactive tax planning for small businesses is so important and needs to be prioritized. Many small business owners react to their numbers and don't think ahead when it comes to taxes. Because of this, businesses are in a bad situation due to not knowing how to make the most of their money, where the money is going or how to proactively plan ahead. Jacqueline and Adam work to ensure small businesses are not left behind and succeed during this stressful time.
Jacqueline and Adam speak to the errors small businesses make during tax season. One of the biggest issues is a lack of communication between the tax preparer and the business owner. Most times, business owners hand accountants everything and call it a day. Sometimes, the business owner doesn't want to fill out the questionnaire, which means the dots are not connected. Big things can be missed, which can lead to issues after filing. Transparency between both parties is extremely important.Listen in to learn more!

Tyson shares and tests the Nano Banana AI image tool, which can be used to improve your brand. The tool can be used to generate AI images that you can use to create brand logos or designs for your business. You can input words into the generator as well as colours for your image, which will pump out something you can use. You can even edit it further by giving it a command to make it more specific. It's an interesting tool to show your creativity in developing your brand.
Tyson also chats about the three habits that set high achievers apart from other people. High achievers usually set transformative goals over transactional ones. Doing this allows individuals to prioritize actions and leave space for exploration. This is something that can set someone apart from others by setting clear expectations for themselves. The second is working backwards to reach a goal. This involves knowing every step of the way from the finish to the start and then figure out where you are. This allows individuals to understand everything they need to do to accomplish their goals. The third and final habit is spending time on things that will deliver returns. In order to reach a goal, it is important to prioritize tasks that will actually get you to the end.

As time goes on, it is important to invest in good production equipment and tools to enhance your content. But, if your content is good and of use to people, they will listen or watch despite how it looks or sounds. As content creators and attorneys, it is important to listen to what your audience wants to learn so you can keep them engaged.
As AI progresses, the types of tools will become more mainstream within law firms. Law firms are perfectly equipped to take on AI tools and integrate them into a system. They discuss law firm marketing, client experience, and operational challenges. With expertise in helping law firm owners scale, Matt talks about the importance of mapping the client journey. This includes understanding and mastering every interaction a client will have, from looking you up online to closing a case. Mapping the client journey also involves making each step of the process seamless. This allows for someone to answer a few quick questions about their situation, leading to that first call.
Matt and Tyson chat about patterns seen in successful law firms. Successful law firms are focused on generating leads and are obsessed with the intake system. Since intake is a crucial part in making money, many successful firms get it right. Their system is easy, quick and uses all the right tools and processes. Another pattern is having a good CRM. Tyson speaks to the importance of culture fit for companies who want to create healthy work environments. Sometimes the culture of a firm involves a certain type of individual who will make the firm better. Relying on creating a team of misfits can create environments where people might not be able to keep up and it can be damaging. If the environment of your firm is fast paced, it is important to hire people that fit that mold. Leaders play a role in creating and determining what the culture is and it is important that leaders know what they want for their firm.
Good work environments support employee’s development and mental health. Tyson shares some team activities leaders can coordinate to boost cognitive health. This can be things employees do solo or the team does together. Ideas include the team tracking their sleep to find out how much is needed to be productive, creating 90 minute work blocks where everyone does focused tasks and committing to minimizing some low value channels of information, like social media.

Watch the YouTube version of this episode HERE
Are you looking for help on how to grow and market your firm? In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer, Tyson interviews Travis Hoechlin and Vaidas Cikotas about how law firms can grow beyond referrals by embracing modern marketing strategies. They highlight the risks of relying solely on referrals, the need for a strong online presence, and the importance of effective intake processes.
Solely relying on referrals can limit the growth of a law firm. It is important to diversify clientele and how you get revenue. For some, relying on referrals means a firm doesn't need to take time to update their website or care about how they are perceived to people trying to figure out more. This can really become problematic because referrals are not always guaranteed and you are missing out on a large portion of people who you could engage with.
Though marketing is an important aspect of a firm, poor processes can make efforts useless. You can market your firm to the point where you are getting a lot of calls and interest. But, if your intake process is not good or your staff are not on top of the phone line, you are losing interest from people who are going off of first impressions. It is important to establish good intake processes to ensure your firm can flourish.

They explore how different practice types affect cash flow, the importance of aligning leadership style with firm culture, and strategies for managing employee performance.
Brooke, Pam and Tyson talk about the key characteristics needed for a successful firm. For Brooke, successful firms involve leaders who invest in themselves and elevate their staff. It also involves trusting your team to make good decisions and letting go of the reins so you as a leader can focus on other things. Pam talks about the importance of leaders having the right metrics and tools in place to trust their teams.
Certain leadership styles can affect team culture. Leaders that run their firm like a democracy and everyone has a say will often lose control. This can lead to a culture when there is no direction and staff are not pulling their weight. If a leader leads with an iron fist or is more likely to not listen to anyone, the culture can be toxic. Are you looking for some tips on changing your mindset for the better? In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer Podcast, Tyson interviews John Kormanik, a former trial attorney turned coach, about his journey overcoming limiting beliefs and the power of mindset.
Tyson and John talk about the importance of mindset shifts when it comes to growth and success. For John, this involved thinking about how lucky he was to do certain things and to have a choice in the life he is living. This really shifted his relationships with his family as well as how he viewed himself. Mindset shifts are important for growth and success. Having a negative mindset can affect how your life moves forward. If you want to grow and succeed, you have to have the mindset necessary to reach that.
John shares his insights on self-criticism and the effect it can have on people. Being self-critical and hard on yourself can really affect your mental health. The key is to show up and do the work for yourself. Attorneys in particular are risk averse and learn not to take the leap and keep things safe. Because of this, many are self-critical and don't think they are good enough. To get over this, it is important to think about what will happen if you fail and if you don’t. Are you looking for advice on how to keep a firm running smoothly? In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer Podcast, Tyson interviews Gary Allen, a lawyer-turned-legal tech founder who shares lessons learned from witnessing two law firm collapse. Gary talks about inefficiencies and cultural barriers in traditional firms, then explains how these experiences inspired the creation of Lean Law.Gary shares his thoughts on the issues that can lead to the collapse of a law firm. One big issue is too much overhead in comparison to what a firm is making. In Gary’s experience, his former employer paid too much overhead (i.e. rent, utilities), but the firm did not bring in as many clients which led to a lack of money being generated. There needs to be a formula that is followed to ensure clients are being brought in so a business can sustain itself. Another issue is time overhead, in which lawyers are working but the hours are not billable. This can cause lawyers to put in so much time and energy into work that they cannot be paid for.
Gary delves into the creation of Lean Law, which is a company focused on streamlining law firm financial management through technology. Lean Law is the financial operating system for many law firms and helps firms process legal fees. It integrates Quickbooks, so firms can personalize their financial management to ensure fees flow in and out of the firm. It is a great tool for law firms to have so all finances are streamlined and money is in order.

Are you a law firm owner who is looking for tips on how to run a good business? In this episode of The Guild Live Show, host Tyson Mutrux shares key takeaways from a New York City mastermind event with attorneys from diverse firms and practice areas. Tyson discusses the “identity crisis” firm owners face when delegating, strategies for handling toxic staff, and innovative ways to package premium legal services.
Many law firm owners struggle with identity crises when navigating the legal space, while also being a business owner. This can stem from a range of things. One of the issues is delegation. If a firm owner delegates to many tasks away from themselves, decisions can be made with no input whatsoever, which can make an individual feel like their role at the firm is unimportant. If these feelings persist, it is time to dial things in and take a little more control back. You can also use it as an opportunity to put your focus into other things.Delivering packaged services is a great way to streamline services and provide clients with a great deal. There are a few different ways to do this, such as packaging services that have a flat rate or packaging contingency services. It is important to understand what you provide and what aspects of your firm can be packaged together. Maybe it is best to package together services that are popular for your firm or packaging services for first time clients.

Are you an attorney looking for advice on how to structure your law firm? In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer Podcast, Tyson interviews Jeff Holman, an attorney and entrepreneur. Jeff shares his journey from engineering to law and business, detailing his transition from private practice to in-house counsel and ultimately creating a fractional legal team model.
Jeff shares how to set expectations for clients about the legal team model. Some clients are used to working with an attorney who will be with them from intake to the conclusion of all affairs. A legal team model involves collaboration with different individuals within a firm, which can involve other lawyers working on a case. Jeff emphasizes the need to provide clear communication with clients who might not be used to this model so they know what kind of support they are receiving. With AI growing within many firms, Jeff and Tyson provide insights on how AI affects client interactions. Research shows that AI integration might lead to firms hiring less attorneys since there are tools that can do a lot of the work for you. For Jeff, the use of AI is a great tool, but won’t be useful for certain aspects. For example, if the right questions aren't being asked, AI can help with this. It can also help replace a first year associate that might be too green to work in a specific legal environment.

It is important to understand the active communication piece as many might not be willing to put energy into it. If you are not able to, ensure someone on your team is able to take it on as a task.Tyson delves into the six steps to get a team motivated. It is easy for people to become de-motivated and lose their edge when working in the legal space. There are six things firm owners can do to get people back on track. The first thing is to reassess and diagnose before you act. It is important to understand the issues that exist within a business. The second step is to build trust and create a safe space, especially if team dynamics are not aligned. The third step is to re-envision to determine the purpose of the team. Talk to your team about what their goals are and highlight challenges. The fourth step is to re-contract and clarify the team’s ways of working. The fifth step is to re-energize and build on success. Ensure to highlight the positive things your team is doing to make them feel good about their work. The last step is to re-adjust in order to sustain momentum.

Are you a law firm owner looking for advice on how to make your firm more lucrative? In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer Podcast, Tyson interviews Ted DeBettencourt, a JD/MBA and a business owner. Ted shares his journey from Martha’s Vineyard to legal tech entrepreneurship, discussing the island’s unique culture and his transition from law to business. To run a successful law firm, it is important that certain processes are in place and run efficiently to turn a profit. An important thing to implement is to ensure there are more staff over auto responders and AI for Local Service Ads (LSA). LSA’s will rank firms based on response times and this can affect how people perceive your firm at the first click. If your response time is slow, most people will not call you for help. Using real people to answer leads and call prospective clients will ensure you get off on the right foot with people who are looking for legal support.
Ted and Tyson chat about the three most important marketing metrics for a successful law firm. The first metric is wanted leads. It is important to know how many leads are actually wanted, in which a firm will be interested in taking on. The second metric is signed rates. Out of the wanted leads, how many of them were signed on as actual cases for the firm. This will determine how successful a firm is when it comes to the number of cases that are taken on and it can show value. The third metric is average case value. This can be determined by how much a firm makes in a year based on the type of cases. Ultimately, the average case value will let someone know how successful a firm really is.

Are you looking for some advice for strengthening your skills as a lawyer? In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer Guild Live Show, host Tyson Mutrux leads a dynamic discussion on lost leads in customer service, the top interview question job candidates should ask, and the ethics of employee poaching in tech.
Using a training video of an initial client call, Tyson talks about lost leads in customer service and how firms can improve communication and establish processes with clients. It is important to know when to simply sign up a client as opposed to trying to get every piece of information. For this caller, they just needed help and the employee was focused on typing everything down, pressing for photos and using escalating behaviour. In contentious situations where callers are distressed, it is best to let them speak and provide a comforting environment where the person feels heard and the employee shows empathy.Tyson delves into questions that candidates should ask to uncover real company values. One of the questions is focused on having the manager describe the kind of person that should not work for the firm. For a manager, this will catch you off guard. But for a prospective candidate, this will allow you to understand how the company sees themselves and the kind of traits and attributes they hold close and value. It will also give you clarity on if it is the type of firm you are wanting to work for.

Are you looking for some tips on how to market your firm using Youtube? In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer Podcast, Tyson and guest Ryan Webber explore the challenges and strategies of growing a YouTube channel, especially for small business owners.
Growing a Youtube channel as a business owner can be a difficult feat. Ryan discusses the strategies needed to ensure a business owner can succeed with marketing their firm through Youtube. One of these strategies is to niche down your content. Your content needs to be specific and directed to a certain audience. If you are wanting to make videos about how to grow a firm or want to focus on answering different legal questions, create videos around that topic only and build it up,
Ryan and Tyson talk about the structure needed for video introductions. Ryan uses the Three P’s, which stand for Pain, Proof and Promise. Pain is identifying the pain point you are going to address, proof is showing how you have accomplished it yourself or that you can provide a solution, and promise is what the audience will get out of the video. This will capture the audience’s attention and keep them intrigued to stay until the end.

Are you a business owner looking for tips to create a stronger business? In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer Podcast, host Tyson Mutrux explores essential strategies for entrepreneurs, focusing on copywriting, productivity, and decision-making.
Copywriting can be used as an advertising tool and can reel in business if done right. Using the Copywriting Playbook, Tyson shares some tips on how to use it effectively for a business. First is to make a specific promise, then add a vehicle or method for that promise, move on to including a timeline and then finish by anchoring it with a number. What this does is show the individual looking at your business what you are going to help them achieve or what they will get out of working with you. It is a quick and catchy tagline that will entice the individual.
Tyson also provides some tips on how a business owner can make effective business decisions. One tip is that you only need 51% certainty to make a decision. If you have a bunch of decisions up in the air and you don't know what move to make, if you are more than sure on which direction to go, follow it. Don’t take more than 48 hours to make a decision on anything for your business. Another tip is to hire someone based on 3 questions: What specific result will this person own? How do they move the firm forward? Should this role be done in-house or outsourced? If you can answer these questions, you are ready to hire.Take a listen to learn more!

Are you a law firm owner looking for strategies to build a better business? In this episode of Maximum Lawyer, Tyson interviews Jonathan Hawkins, an attorney specializing in advising law firms on business management and legal strategy. Jonathan shares practical insights on building strong client retainer agreements, protecting against associate turnover, and planning for partnership transitions.
Jonathan shares some strategies law firms need to use to protect themselves when associates leave and take clients with them. One thing to embed in your processes is establishing partnership agreements with lawyers you hire. This is a way to outline stipulations as it relates to a lawyer leaving and taking a client. Though a client has the ultimate choice, it can be included in an agreement that a lawyer should not encourage their client to leave with them. As a firm owner, this protects your downside and provides you with some sort of protection when it comes to losing clients.Tyson and Jonathan chat about value drivers for law firms and how owners can enhance their practice when it comes time to sell. A big value driver for a potential buyer are the employees. If a new owner is looking to take over, having solid employees and a good leadership team will attract someone to jump in. It will make the transition much smoother and leave the buyer feeling confident in their decision. Another value driver are marketing systems. If your firm has great systems to market itself, someone will be more inclined to buy because they see the dedication that exists within the firm and how it presents itself.

The issue with this is owners becoming overwhelmed with so many tasks which leads to things not getting done. Think through the tasks that can be delegated out to different individuals on your team. It is important that you have trust with those in your firm to accomplish tasks.
Kyle provides some strategies on how to integrate core value in the hiring process. It is crucial to hire staff who align with the core values you have for the firm. Are you a lawyer who is looking to become a firm owner in the future? In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer podcast, Tyson engages in a conversation with Jayden Doye, a CPA and business owner, who shares their journey from a financially constrained upbringing to establishing a successful firm.
Transitioning from employee to business owner comes with a lot of hard work and lessons learned. Jayden speaks to the need for coaching when going from working for a firm to owning and operating a firm. Using a sales funnel, Jayden learned through coaching the importance of using social media, like Facebook to market to potential clients. Though coaching takes time and money in investments, it can turn you into a high valued attorney down the line.
Coaching has also helped Jayden change his thinking when transitioning to a business owner. One of the things he changed was the need to niche down to lawyers. It is important to try to understand early on what type of law you want to get into. From that point, you network and talk with lawyers in that space to understand how best to work in that space.

Are you a law firm owner looking for some advice on running a successful firm? In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer podcast, Tyson engages in a conversation with Josh Stein, a personal injury lawyer, about the evolving landscape of personal injury law and the challenges of running a law firm.Running a law firm is a challenging task even for seasoned attorneys. Josh speaks to the benefits of working alongside a mentor to help navigate the journey of firm ownership. Law school will not teach you the business side of things, which is what Josh learned from his mentor. Whether it be learning how to work with a client, going through audits or mastering the art of tax season, a mentor is crucial to learning the ropes and running a successful law firm.
Authenticity is an important trait to have as an attorney. Being true to yourself as a person will translate in how you work with clients. When informing clients about their cases, especially if they are calling to inquire about their situation, be upfront and honest about how you can help (if you can help at all) and let them know how things will play out. This will help the client in the long run and save both of you a lot of time.Listen in to learn more!

Brett shares valuable insights into the risks he took in business, the challenges of leadership, and the importance of fostering a healthy team environment.

A healthy team has good conflict where people can share ideas and there is a sense of security where leaders will appreciate the feedback or thoughts of those under them. Another thing to consider is to establish team roles and who should do what. It is important to understand from the perspective of the owner how you want your team to look. Consult those on the team to get opinions on who should be responsible for what and how the team should function. It is best to do this collaboratively to ensure everyone is happy and knows their roles.
Using EOS systems is an integral part of running a successful firm. It is important to figure out how to use a system to fit your goals, without weakening it. Are you a business owner who is looking to learn about running a more successful firm? In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer Podcast, Tyson interviews Mike Payne, the founder of BOSS Advisors, about his pioneering journey in establishing an alternative business structure (ABS) that combines legal and accounting services.
Mike, a lawyer and CPA, shares his motivations, challenges, and the regulatory landscape in Arizona that allowed him to create this unique firm. Being able to provide clients with multiple services is such a huge benefit to a business owner and can make one look desirable to clients who want more than one thing. Mike shares his insights in marketing to clients who might want multiple services.
For Mike, marketing to these clients involves providing them with services that go hand in hand, like legal and accounting support. Without having to register as a CPA, Mike is able to help business owners with their taxes, provide bookkeeping services and legal services.
For a firm that has 5 different departments all doing different work, it is inevitable that silos will exist. It is easy for people to learn or share knowledge within their own teams. For Mike, it is important to eliminate silos and ensure there is cross collaboration and information sharing. This happens through training that is provided across departments. For example, accountants are provided training from an attorney's perspective on how things work and vice versa. A successful business will ensure to show how all roles affect each other and encourage collaboration.

Are you an attorney who is looking for tips on improving your client intake process? In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer Podcast, CEO Becca Eberhart chats with Vaidas and Steve from RizeUp Media. They discuss common pitfalls in client intake, such as delayed responses and inadequate engagement tools.
Vaidas and Steve share the top mistakes that law firms make during the client intake process. The biggest error is not picking up the phone when clients call. In today's world, no one leaves a message and during that period, most clients would have moved on to the next firm and possibly secured a lawyer. Adding a chat feature or after hours answering service are good features to include in the intake process to ensure people can always access your services.
Most clients are seeking urgent information and usually need support quickly. In urgent situations, client intake needs to be flawless. It is best to create a standard process for urgent matters to ensure someone can get important information and speak to a lawyer quickly.
