NZ Warriors finished their 2026 season with lots of bad vibes after the NRL team matched the NRLW team's late season slump. Warriors lost their second NRL Finals game in Auckland in a row with the Eden Park defeat to Knights and left a pretty stink taste heading into the summer. Knights had Kalyn Ponga, Phoenix Crossland and Francis Manuleleua showing out on their returns to Aotearoa. NZ Breakers won their first game of the NBL season led by kiwi big man Sam Mennenga and Stipe Ukich is a player to watch out for with All Whites as the prepare for an international football window. Wellington Phoenix made a flurry of signings last week with Milly Clegg the most notable of them, while Chris Greenacre continues to build a solid men's squad. White Ferns need a new coach and Rachin Ravindra got injured, both of which involve some goofy NZ Cricket antics.

This week in the Niche Cache we quickly roll through some Steven Adams, Tim Payne and Super Smash stuff as well as celebrating some awesome New Zealand music from Top Shelf and Caru/Brandn Shiraz. New Zealand Warriors had a win in the NRL and loss in NRLW vs Gold Coast Titans, both of which highlighted fundamental aspects of their footy. Warriors have individual brilliance in NRLW but are struggling to keep up with the speed of the league while Warriors are scoring points all across the park in NRL, can bounce back from losses and had excellent contributions from local juniors vs Titans. Kayliss Fatialofa is also departing Warriors to join Sea Eagles and that leads into an edge forward depth check at Mt Smart. Southland Sharks host Wellington Saints in the NBL final and we chat through some kiwi footballers to watch out for in the Auckland FC Invitational squad, before checking in with Callum McCowatt's situation at Silkeborg and Luke Brooke-Smith at Portsmouth. We finish with a few quick kiwi cricket topics featuring young batters in T20 leagues and Cameron Paul's winter development.

There was also a Kiwi-NRL debut for Francis Manuleleua for Knights vs NZ Warriors. We chat about Charlisse Leger-Walker and kiwis in NCAA March Madness before rolling through the White Ferns and Blackcaps doube header where the women are on track as an impressive T20I outfit. Blackcaps continue to balance older players and youngsters, all of whom deserve opportunities to represent New Zealand and there are even more exciting young talents in Plunket Shield such as Lachlan Stackpole and Thomas O'Connor. This week in the Niche Cache we reflect on the Blackcaps T20 World Cup final loss and flush the dunny to move forward ... with a T20I series vs South Africa right around the corner. White Ferns have named their T20I squad to play South Africa as well and Brett Randell wasn't the only Plunket Shield bowler to take 7 wickets with Otago's Thomas O'Connor showing New Zealand's depth with delightful left-arm swing. NZ Warriors dished out plenty of offloads against Sydney Roosters and we'll have to wait to see if this is a new addition to their footy, while the Jersey Flegg Cup Warriors played their first game of the season so we offer some deep cuts there. Siale Faeamani made his NRL debut for Titans which means two Kiwi-NRL players made debuts in the first round along with Setu Tu. Both Aotearoa A-League men's teams had draws although the vibes are completely different as Auckland FC prepare for a monster battle vs Newcastle Jets and Wellington Phoenix aren't changing much. Phoenix women return to action after an international break and there are plenty of funky Football Ferns angles to discuss, plus Ben Waine is commanding a World Cup spot with his form for Port Vale.

We break down some key points for their semi-final vs South Africa and then highlight Izzy Gaze as the most impressive White Fern after the T20I series win vs Zimbabwe. Plunket Shield rolls along with Northern Districts defeating Auckland and we discuss Simon Keene's sneaky batting ability as well as Zak Gibson's efficient seam bowling for ND this season. Tall Blacks had two wins in Asia over the weekend with New Zealand's basketball depth on show. NRL started over the weekend with the Otahuhu wing combo for Dragons coming close to a win vs Bulldogs and Dylan Brown showing his growth in the halves for Knights. NZ Breakers missed the NBL finals but still have the glorious Ignite Cup to look forward to. NZ Warriors lost their NRL preseason game vs Sea Eagles and didn't show any funky additions to their mediocre attacking movements, while a bunch of Kiwi-NRL juniors caught the eye for Penrith Panthers as they build out their Aotearoa flavour. This week on the Niche Cast we have a minor celebration of Super Smash cricket and Luke Georgeson's mana before checking in with what music we have been jamming. Then we touch on the NZ Breakers before reacting to the Blackcaps squad for the Champions Trophy. Ben Sears was a surprise inclusion and there is plenty of depth throughout New Zealand cricket, leading our conversation into the depths of Super Smash. Otago Volts and Sparks are going well in Super Smash, while Jess Kerr is dominating with Wellington Blaze. It's a busy time for the Flying Kiwis with Moses Dyer and Anna Leat making moves, while Libby Cacace has a funky role with Empoli. Then we try to gather one key point about Wellington Phoenix men and women, as well as Auckland FC as they grind through the summer phase of A-League. We finish with some leftover NZ Warriors thoughts after the retirement of Tohu Harris.

This week on the Niche Cast we start with a few of our favourite stinky Blackcaps nuggets after another Test loss vs England and in New Zealand. Then we chat through a few Kiwi-NRL updates like Lennix Tovo training with Rabbitohs and NZ Warriors storylines such as the young wave, Tohu Harris' role and replacing Shaun Johnson's kicking/Addin Fonua-Blake's run metres. NZ Breakers keep losing but Melbourne United are the best NBL team and have hearty kiwis in Rob Loe, Shea Ili and Flynn Cameron. Auckland FC won the A-League derby vs Wellington Phoenix which means we have plenty to discuss with notes about playing styles, Kosta Barbarouses and the temple of Mt Smart. We finish with more complaining about Blackcaps, because, well they deserve it.

This week on the Niche Cast we roll through Joseph Parker's next fight, Chris Wood's penalty taking excellence and the Freddie Gillespie/Tacko Fall swap for NZ Breakers. Then we go deep into the Blackcaps vs England mangroves with notes about respecting England's domination of Blackcaps, Blackcaps being mediocre in New Zealand, playing styles, form slumps and plenty more. Plunket Shield rolls along so we offer a few of our favourite players (Rhys Mariu, Bevon Jacobs, Brett Hampton, Matt Fisher) and break down Otago's strong start to HBJ Shield. Auckland United and Auckland City won the National League football finals, while Auckland FC continue to own the A-League which includes nifty mahi from Nando Pijnaker. We finish with NZ Warriors depth/contract stuff and Sydney Roosters setting up a base in Christchurch.
(Also, apologies for the audio quality… we had some technical dramas with the upload so it was a low-quality file or nothing - we’ll try fix it later if we can, cheers for understanding)

There are a few Plunket Shield notes such as Rhys Mariu now averaging 60 odd as well. All three kiwi A-League teams had wins over the weekend so we discuss the impressive young Wellington Phoenix players like Isaac Hughes, Corbin Piper and Nathan Walker, Auckland FC's defensive excellence and the first win for Phoenix women. We finish with a few quick Kiwi-NRL nuggets about Te Hurinui Twidle rising with Parramatta Eels and Sosaia Alatini/Cassius Tia rising with Bulldogs.
