Everybody on the block knew the tall man in the black cloak who never spoke and shut his eyes whenever a woman passed him on the sidewalk, and nobody thought to wonder why until the morning the janitor came running out of the tenement shouting for help.

Written in 1942, “Mimic” eventually inspired the 1997 horror film of the same name. The short story was written by Martin Pearson, though you may also know him as Donald A. Wollheim or Darrel G. Raynor, as he used many pseudonyms when writing. The story is a simple premise, talking of how some insects disguise themselves as other insects, or some animals disguise themselves as other animals, in order to not be eaten by the creatures above them in the food chain. At the top of the food chain is man – do we have mimics disguised as us – in plain sight?

Few know of the original short story that inspired Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic horror film, “The Birds” - but it’s that story that I’m sharing with you tonight.

THE STORY: On December 3rd the wind turns east and winter lands overnight on a Cornish peninsula, where Nat Hocken, a part-time farm worker living on a wartime disability pension, wakes to something tapping at the bedroom window. By dawn there are fifty dead birds on the floor of his children's room, and out in the bay the gulls are massing by the tens of thousands, riding the swells and waiting on the tide. Nat boards his windows and stuffs his chimneys while the wireless carries a Home Office statement, then a national emergency, then nothing at all; he works out that the attacks rise and fall with the flood tide, and measures his family's odds in bread, candles, and kerosene. Evan Hunter's screenplay moved the story to Bodega Bay and built new characters around du Maurier's title, keeping her unexplained attacks and little else. The original ends with Nat lighting the last cigarette in the packet and throwing the empty one on the fire.

The gruesomeness that took place there still continues today, with the island being illegal to visit – and reportedly, very haunted. (Death By Sweat) *** Most everyone is familiar with the plague in Europe in the early 1400s – but in the early 1900s it struck again. This time in San Francisco. If you’ve not heard that before, it could be because the U.S. government tried to cover it up. (The Plague of San Francisco) *** Of all the imagery that comes to mind when hearing the words “bubonic plague” the most prevalent is most certainly that of the doctors – and the odd, bird-like masks they would wear. Why they dressed that way is interesting – but what the doctors did while wearing those suits and in their labs as they tried to battle the illness is absolutely horrifying. Four thousand light-years from Earth, a survey ship deep inside the Crab Nebula picks up something on its locator that no human built, and within the hour both crews understand the same thing: whichever ship leaves first can be followed home, so neither one can be allowed to leave.

A NOTE FROM YOUR NARRATOR: I’ve been on an old-time radio kick recently, listening to shows like “The Whistler”, “Dimension X”, and “Strange Tales”. One of my favorite shows is called “X-Minus One”.  It was a half-hour science fiction radio drama series that was broadcast from April 24, 1955 to January 9, 1958 in various timeslots on NBC radio. At the end of each episode they tell you where the stories they used came from before they adapted them for radio – and one of those sources was the publication “Astounding Science Fiction Magazine”. I jumped online to see if there were old copies I could look at, and I found a book – an anthology of many of the stories from that magazine. The book was published in 1954. The story was entitled “First Contact”, written by Murray Leinster in 1945. The story is credited as one of the first instances of a universal translator in science fiction. So influential is the story that it won a retro Hugo Award for Best Novelette in 1996.

In London, while the Ripper hunt filled the front pages, someone else was dropping the dismembered pieces of women into the Thames, one of them on the construction site of Scotland Yard itself. A Glasgow socialite stood trial for lacing her lover's cocoa with arsenic, barrister Charles Bravo lingered for days in his Balham mansion with antimony in his body and a household full of suspects, and Adelaide Bartlett walked out of court with liquid chloroform in her dead husband's stomach and no explanation of how it got there. Add a young Bradford boy whose mutilated body drew the Ripper's name north, a murdered London prostitute whose death gave Charles Dickens the killing of Nancy in "Oliver Twist", an actress found on Christmas morning with her throat cut and her door locked from the outside, and three siblings laid out in a Queensland paddock with their feet pointed west, and you have nine cases closed by verdict, by acquittal, or by nobody at all, with the questions still sitting open more than a century later.

This episode of Weird Darkness follows two unsolved campaigns of terror by mail: the Circleville Letters that tormented a small Ohio town beginning in 1976, and The Watcher, an anonymous writer who drove a family out of a $1.3 million house in Westfield, New Jersey.It opens in Circleville, Ohio, where school bus driver Mary Gillespie started receiving block-lettered letters postmarked from Columbus accusing her of an affair with the school superintendent and warning that her house was being watched. Her husband Ron Gillespie got one ordering him to end the affair or die, and on August 19, 1977, after a phone call whose contents Mary never learned, Ron grabbed his pistol, drove off, and struck a tree at a nearby...

This episode of Weird Darkness follows the 1921 murder of an 11-year-old babysitter beside a New Jersey winery, the two suspects tried and acquitted for killing her, and the ghost that motorists still report walking the same street toward a home she never reached.It opens on Fairview Avenue in Madison, New Jersey, on the evening of October 6, 1921, when 11-year-old Janette Lawrence left a babysitting job at the Sandt home and walked past the wooded edge of the Kluxen Winery estate toward her house at 142 Ridgedale Avenue. Two Boy Scouts found her body beside a tree stump in Kluxen's Woods about two hours later, stabbed 23 times, her hands bound behind her with the kind of cord local rose greenhouses used for shipping. The Madison borough council ordered the arrest of 14-year-old Francis Kluxen III, grandson of the winery's founder, the next day, and a judge released him on bail after calling the arrest unjustified. Morris County prosecutor John M. Mills went after a different man, 29-year-old greenhouse worker Frank Jancarek, on the word of Frank McGrory, a fired ex-convict who claimed Jancarek confessed to him the night of the killing. Jancarek's April 1922 trial in Morristown featured a letter opener with blood under its handle, a single hair that "closely resembled" his, a witness who conferred with the sheriff before picking him from a lineup, and a defense that told jurors to disregard the...

THE REAL CASE BEHIND THIS STORY: The story in this episode is a fictionalized dramatization. Invented for it are the detective, his office, the gravedigger, the specific conversations, and the telephone call, and every name of a person or a place has been changed. The case underneath it is real.On the night of Thursday, June 24th, 1948, seventeen-year-old Mary Jane Reed, a switchboard operator, went on a first date with Stanley Skridla, a twenty-eight-year-old Navy veteran and telephone lineman from Rockford. They drank in taverns in Oregon, Illinois, a town on the Rock River in Ogle County, and the last place anyone could name was the Stenhouse, out on Route 2 at the south edge of town. They left around eleven-thirty. Skridla was found the next morning in the ditch along County Farm Road, shot with a .32. Mary Jane was found five days later along Silica Road, now called Devil's Backbone Road, shot once through the head, her slacks off her and her mother's wedding ring still on her hand. Roughly fifty people were questioned within a week. Nobody was ever charged, and the case was off the front pages by autumn.The casings, the photographs and the investigation reports all disappeared in the decades that followed. On November 15th, 1999 – Mary Jane's birthday – an untraceable floral arrangement addressed to her arrived at the old Stenhouse, by then the Road House, on a day the bar was closed. The owner, Mike Arians, had just been elected mayor, and the case has occupied him ever since. Her brother Warren Reed had her exhumed on August 23rd, 2005. Inside the burial vault, beside the casket, investigators found a dress and slip wrapped in newspapers dated June 25th, 1948 – four days before anyone found her. In 2007, forensic anthropologist Linda Klepinger examined the remains released to the family and reported that the skull and one vertebra had come from a different person. The DNA test that would settle it has never been run. Skridla was exhumed in 2015 on Arians's theory that Mary Jane's skull had been hidden in his coffin; it held one man and nothing else, though two .32 slugs came out of the ground with him and neither matched the gun Arians submitted.Warren Reed died on December 23rd, 2023, at eighty-one, without ever learning whose skull was in his sister's grave. The homicides remain open and unsolved.
