On Reddit, plenty of people who live in rural areas or make their livelihood there, share their scary stories for the rest of us to freak out over. We know that often strange people linger around woods, parks, and other desolate areas. And we have all heard plenty of the kind of creepy stories that backpackers experience. However, in this episode, the stories are more than a little unpleasant, because the people who suffered them weren't just out and about anywhere; they were at their homes, or doing their jobs. Imagine living in the woods, and looking up from your bathtub to see a face looking back at you. Or imagine you are working as a forest ranger and come across a thumb nailed to a tree. Tonight I will share some of the terrifying real-life stories, stories that are the stuff of nightmares.

In July 1969, six frightened people told Fort Worth police they'd been attacked near Greer Island on Lake Worth by something half-man and half-goat, covered in fur and scales, and within days hundreds of armed hunters were combing the woods for a creature nobody has been able to put a name to in the more than fifty years since.

The story was written as a serial, published one chapter at a time from October 1921 to June 1922 in the amateur publication Home Brew. And because it was written during this time, you will hear language not considered politically correct today – particularly that of words used to describe people of color. But as I have done in the past, I am leaving it all intact to preserve the author’s words in their original form, and so we never forget our sometimes horrible history.

ABOUT THE STORY: It’s a classic tale from H.P. Lovecraft entitled “Herbert West: Reanimator”. Herbert West is perhaps the best-known of Lovecraft’s human characters. Most people upon hearing the word “Reanimator” will automatically think of the film from 1985 of the same name – based upon the story you’re about to hear. But loosely based. Very… loosely… based. They went more in a comedy direction with the film. Some believe Lovecraft did intend his originally story to be a parody of Frankenstein. But it doesn’t really feel like a parody. At least, to the extent that parodies are supposed to be funny. Also, Herbert West is the antithesis of Victor Frankenstein. Whereas Mary Shelley’s scientist is mad only to the extent he is prone to wild flights of passionate emotion and expressing himself in florid romantic speeches, Herbert West is hyper-rational, dispassionate, amoral, and unsentimental. Where Frankenstein is wracked with debilitating guilt, West is a sociopath, driven by a desire to prove his theories correct no matter what the cost. Maybe Lovecraft’s point was that if anyone was going to bring dead bodies back to a kind of “life,” it would be a ruthless and unemotional scientist, not someone who sounds suspiciously like a lovesick poet. And, I guess he’s probably right. Still, if you’re after the big laughs like what was in the movie, “Herbert West: Reanimator” is not the place to find them. It’s a story in six parts, but each part is essentially the same as the others: West reanimates a corpse. Reanimated corpse starts wrecking everything. West and the narrator conceal their involvement. Rinse and repeat. Chew Avenue, Raymond Horsch was trading drugs and cash for access to the Kensington crematorium at the center of Philadelphia's body-parts scandal, where he photographed and filmed the dead and later hung the pictures in a gallery. Everybody on the block knew the tall man in the black cloak who never spoke and shut his eyes whenever a woman passed him on the sidewalk, and nobody thought to wonder why until the morning the janitor came running out of the tenement shouting for help.

Written in 1942, “Mimic” eventually inspired the 1997 horror film of the same name. The short story was written by Martin Pearson, though you may also know him as Donald A. Wollheim or Darrel G. Raynor, as he used many pseudonyms when writing. Few know of the original short story that inspired Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic horror film, “The Birds” - but it’s that story that I’m sharing with you tonight.

THE STORY: On December 3rd the wind turns east and winter lands overnight on a Cornish peninsula, where Nat Hocken, a part-time farm worker living on a wartime disability pension, wakes to something tapping at the bedroom window. By dawn there are fifty dead birds on the floor of his children's room, and out in the bay the gulls are massing by the tens of thousands, riding the swells and waiting on the tide. Nat boards his windows and stuffs his chimneys while the wireless carries a Home Office statement, then a national emergency, then nothing at all; he works out that the attacks rise and fall with the flood tide, and measures his family's odds in bread, candles, and kerosene. Evan Hunter's screenplay moved the story to Bodega Bay and built new characters around du Maurier's title, keeping her unexplained attacks and little else. The original ends with Nat lighting the last cigarette in the packet and throwing the empty one on the fire.

Four thousand light-years from Earth, a survey ship deep inside the Crab Nebula picks up something on its locator that no human built, and within the hour both crews understand the same thing: whichever ship leaves first can be followed home, so neither one can be allowed to leave.

A NOTE FROM YOUR NARRATOR: I’ve been on an old-time radio kick recently, listening to shows like “The Whistler”, “Dimension X”, and “Strange Tales”. One of my favorite shows is called “X-Minus One”.  It was a half-hour science fiction radio drama series that was broadcast from April 24, 1955 to January 9, 1958 in various timeslots on NBC radio. At the end of each episode they tell you where the stories they used came from before they adapted them for radio – and one of those sources was the publication “Astounding Science Fiction Magazine”. I jumped online to see if there were old copies I could look at, and I found a book – an anthology of many of the stories from that magazine. The book was published in 1954. The story was entitled “First Contact”, written by Murray Leinster in 1945. The story is credited as one of the first instances of a universal translator in science fiction. So influential is the story that it won a retro Hugo Award for Best Novelette in 1996.

In London, while the Ripper hunt filled the front pages, someone else was dropping the dismembered pieces of women into the Thames, one of them on the construction site of Scotland Yard itself. A Glasgow socialite stood trial for lacing her lover's cocoa with arsenic, barrister Charles Bravo lingered for days in his Balham mansion with antimony in his body and a household full of suspects, and Adelaide Bartlett walked out of court with liquid chloroform in her dead husband's stomach and no explanation of how it got there. Add a young Bradford boy whose mutilated body drew the Ripper's name north, a murdered London prostitute whose death gave Charles Dickens the killing of Nancy in "Oliver Twist", an actress found on Christmas morning with her throat cut and her door locked from the outside, and three siblings laid out in a Queensland paddock with their feet pointed west, and you have nine cases closed by verdict, by acquittal, or by nobody at all, with the questions still sitting open more than a century later.

Her husband Ron Gillespie got one ordering him to end the affair or die, and on August 19, 1977, after a phone call whose contents Mary never learned, Ron grabbed his pistol, drove off, and struck a tree at a nearby...

This episode of Weird Darkness follows the 1921 murder of an 11-year-old babysitter beside a New Jersey winery, the two suspects tried and acquitted for killing her, and the ghost that motorists still report walking the same street toward a home she never reached.It opens on Fairview Avenue in Madison, New Jersey, on the evening of October 6, 1921, when 11-year-old Janette Lawrence left a babysitting job at the Sandt home and walked past the wooded edge of the Kluxen Winery estate toward her house at 142 Ridgedale Avenue. Two Boy Scouts found her body beside a tree stump in Kluxen's Woods about two hours later, stabbed 23 times, her hands bound behind her with the kind of cord local rose greenhouses used for shipping. The Madison borough council ordered the arrest of 14-year-old Francis Kluxen III, grandson of the winery's founder, the next day, and a judge released him on bail after calling the arrest unjustified. Morris County prosecutor John M. Mills went after a different man, 29-year-old greenhouse worker Frank Jancarek, on the word of Frank McGrory, a fired ex-convict who claimed Jancarek confessed to him the night of the killing. Jancarek's April 1922 trial in Morristown featured a letter opener with blood under its handle, a single hair that "closely resembled" his, a witness who conferred with the sheriff before picking him from a lineup, and a defense that told jurors to disregard the...
