The proliferation of many organizations raises many questions prime among them: why? who can we trust? who is legitimate? And how and what works? 

Helping us understand all of this is Dr Kamel Mohanna, a physician and a humanitarian who’s been a beacon in the field. Dr Mohanna is the General Coordinator of the Arab NGOs, and the Founding President of Amel Association International. Amel is one of the largest humanitarian organizations in the Middle East, nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and serving countless needy individuals in Lebanon and abroad.

The global estimated prevalence of CKD is 13.4%, and in the US more than 1 in 7, that is 15% of US adults, are estimated to have CKD. Moreover, as many as 9 in 10 adults with CKD do not know they have the disease. 

When people develop chronic kidney disease, their kidneys become damaged and over time may not clean the blood as well as healthy kidneys. If kidneys do not work well, toxic waste and extra fluid accumulate in the body and may lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and early death.

According to Wikipedia, the Qudoūd Ḥalabīya, literally means “musical measures of Aleppo” and are based on old religious melodies collected mainly by Aleppine musicians. Their themes are most often love, longing and spirituality. The lyrics vary according to the type of event, be it for religious or entertainment purposes. Singers use deep vocals to reach a peak while holding a long note or repeating a phrase, sending their audiences into what is referred to as tarab, or exultation. Qudoud is a vital part of Aleppan culture and is viewed as a source of resilience, particularly during war. 
The UNEESCO inscribed Qudoud in 2021 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Philanthropy is a gift of time, talent, or treasure. While most philanthropy takes place every day by ordinary people, what often gets the attention are mega-donations by “elite” to elite causes. Moreover, the tax incentives and agendas associated with “charitable giving” raises several ethical questions. That said, the act of selfless giving ought to be encouraged and applauded.  The Center for Arab American Philanthropy (CAAP) is a national community foundation focused on uniting and strengthening the collective power of Arab American giving. This institution may prove to be a paradigm shift in the way Arab Americans can practice philanthropy. America has a love affair with firearms. The “gun culture” runs deep in the society going back to the early days of the founding on the country. The right to own a firearm is protected by law in the Bill of Right under the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution. Over the past few decades this has become a hot issue, and part of the political debate. Dr Abouali’s career has spanned higher education, cultural heritage, and museum work. She has held several positions both in academia and on several boards and committees. Diana graduated from Wellesley college and received a PhD in History and Middle Eastern Studies from Harvard University. She is actively engaged with the Arab American community and with numerous academic centers throughout the US.

Across the globe, women’s participation in the workplace has grown significantly. Women have been working longer hours and pursuing higher education in greater numbers. However, despite this progress, significant wage gaps between men and women persist.

The gender wage gap refers to the difference in earnings between women and men. Experts have calculated this gap in a multitude of ways, but the varying calculations point to a consensus: Women consistently earn less than men. In this podcast, we will describe this disparity in wages, try to go over some of the theories and reasons why this gap exists, and talk about its consequences. When it comes to COVID-19, the pandemic has been characterized by a persistent stream of misinformation to the public on everything from the origin of the virus and the use of masks to the utility of social distancing, and even the benefit of vaccines. Domestic Violence, often referred to as Intimate Partner Violence, is a serious preventable public health problem. This can be missed or misidentified especially in ethnic communities, where “the norms” can be misconstrued. COVID-19 incidence is witnessing a surge, Arab Americans like many other ethnic communities have varying levels of understanding of the disease influenced by many factors, ranging from socio-economical to educational and cultural awareness. This episode was inspired by a project planning a series of short educational Arabic videos by Arab American doctors in simple to understand language aimed at raising awareness of the disease. The Biden-Harris campaign has done something unprecedented in the history of US elections, it drafted and announced a plan to address issues of importance to the Arab-American electorate. And while many Arab Americans were behind Bernie Sanders during the primaries, they nevertheless supported Biden in the general election, looking for a new perspective in the post-Trump era.
