Households and businesses across the UK have been paid to cut back on electricity on Monday and Tuesday as part of the National Grid ESO's Demand Flexibility Service (DFS). Although the scheme is believed to have offered much-wanted relief to the strained grid, critics have said that this might be a "sticking plaster" that could not provide a long-term solution to the rising energy needs. Chris Broadhurst, Chief Commercial Officer at Electron, an EnTech company which provides a marketplace platform for flexible electricity grids told ELN: "It is just scratching the surface of what's possible. If we can move to a more local approach to flexibility, then I think we can really start to drive value to customers, not just when they use it, which is how the scheme is currently working, but where they use it and they will get paid real value for that." Mr Broadhurst added that a recent study by Energy Systems Catapult showed that if the UK moves to a much more local approach to matching supply and demand and pricing energy locally, it could unlock more than £30 billion by 2035 - this means that every household could benefit from nearly a thousand of pounds. In a wide-ranging speech to hundreds of industry delegates, he said the UK has already made considerable progress on the journey to net zero – he noted it has already cut carbon dioxide emissions by around 45% since 1990, despite the economy growing by two-thirds over this time.

There are a lot of challenges involved in going green - but how can they be overcome? Kam Singh, Director of Energy at CBRE, told ELN that companies need to understand a significant investment is often required to become more sustainable and reduce their emissions but noted they should see this as an opportunity for long-term growth rather than a barrier.

The current form of capitalism is “almost inevitably going to have to change”. That’s the verdict from Adam Woodhall, spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion, who spoke to ELN during the climate group’s two-week protest at the start of October. He said “people find it easier to see the end of civilisation than they do to see the end of capitalism” and stressed he wanted to avoid a “Mad Max world”. Mr Woodhall told ELN “things can change very rapidly” and noted that even if this transition was uncomfortable, it is necessary to envisage a new future that takes less of a toll on the natural environment. He said: “The current form of capitalism is almost inevitably going to have to change, it’ll either collapse because we get exceptional climate destruction or we change it.” Speaking for the activist group, he suggested that as humanity is already so far along the curve of climate change, disruptive action is now needed to draw attention to the ecological emergency as “everything else has failed to create the level of change that is required”. That's the suggestion from Richard Molloy, Manager of UK Energy Storage at Eaton, who spoke to ELN last week at the firm's London offices. The gas is said to have the highest global warming potential of any known substance – scientists say it is 23,500 times more potent than carbon dioxide and can last in the atmosphere for up to 1,000 years. It is commonly used as an insulating material to prevent short circuits, fires and electrical accidents across the sector – however, SF6 leaks can significantly contribute to the global climate crisis. Mr Molloy talked to ELN about the benefits, the drawbacks and the future of the controversial substance.

Fusion technology will save the world… and soon! That’s according to Nicholas Hawker, CEO of First Light Fusion, who told ELN Reporter Jonny Bairstow about how the clean and unlimited power source will change the world within the next decade. Talking at the company’s headquarters just outside Oxford, Mr Hawker said the emerging technology will prove vital for decarbonisation and stressed batteries, solar and other renewables won’t be able to scale up enough to reach net zero alone. He suggested it would provide a new, clean baseload power source and said it would tackle the issue of intermittency brought on by adding more renewables to the grid.

Pavan is a Sustainability Manager at Multiplex Europe and she has been instrumental in enabling the business to start their journey towards net zero carbon. She has done this through her work in setting a science-based target for Multiplex Europe, and supporting other large businesses to follow suit. Pavan has experience in onsite construction environmental management and has integrated the UN Sustainable Development Goals across the company.

Sarah Jolliffe, Energy Manager at BAM Nuttall (part of the Royal BAM Group) with 4 years experience in energy and sustainability focused roles but has 15 years experience in practical aspects of construction and civil engineering having previously worked as a trade operative in residential house building and site engineering. Currently focussed on achieving carbon and waste reductions in the built environment across the whole of the Royal BAM group with a particular focus on wider impacts of scope 3 carbon emissions.
