Espejos de Aztlan

Lunes 10 de agosto, 19hs.: Con el nuevo siglo y con nuevos y viejos desafíos, una nueva generación de músicos y compositores del espectro panamericano refunda y recrea la Nueva Canción latinoamericana del siglo anterior. La revisita incluye una profunda recreación de la música de los años ´60, ´70 u ´80s con nuevos arreglos musicales así como nuevas composiciones que reflejan los reclamos y las complejidades identitarias que salen a la luz en el arte y en los movimientos sociales contemporáneos.

Mon. 8/3, 7p: On Espejos de Aztlán, in a conversation with Dr. Yolanda Chávez Leyva hosted by Cristina Baccin, we talk about the controversial figure of Juan de Oñate y Salazar and the veneration of Spanish conquerors by some in the Southwest: what´s their role in the history of inclusion/exclusion in the Southwest and in the USA as a nation.

Dr. Vanessa Fonseca-Chávez, Inaugural Poet Laureate of New Mexico Levi Romero, and Dr. Spencer R. Herrera talk with host Cristina Baccin about what´s a querencia: is it a place in your heart? a childhood home? Language, sounds, smells or tastes? They´ll share their thoughts and stories around querencia and their inspiration as editors of the recently released book Querencia: Reflections on the New Mexico homeland published by the University of New Mexico Press.

Mon. 7/6, 7p: On Espejos de Aztlán, New Mexican author Dr. Lillian Gorman shares insights from her research on the 4th of July Fiestas in Las Vegas, New Mexico. In a re-evaluation of the Fiestas cultural richness and its deeply rooted anchor as querencia for many northern Nuevomexicanos. We will chat about these Fiestas as a “love of place” and as a "contestatory space" at the same time, hosted by Cristina Baccin.

Mon. 6/8, 7p: Today, on Espejos de Aztlán we have a conversation with Prof. Nancy López hosted by Cristina Baccin regarding the brutality and cruelty of police officers in the murder of Mr. George Floyd. We will discuss how this tragic incident is related with our nation’s history of slavery, intentional segregation and institutionalized racism. Dr. Nancy López, Professor of Sociology is the Director of the Institute for Study of “Race” and Social Justice and an Africana Studies Faculty Affiliate at the University of New Mexico. We will also talk about steps each of us can take to build and establish a just society and secure everyone’s human rights, especially in New Mexico.

Mon. 4/13, 8p: On Espejos de Aztlán, we honor Dr. Mari-Luci Jaramillo´s life and contributions to New Mexico, our nation and the world. A native of Las Vegas, New Mexico, who advocated for civil rights become the first Latina to hold a United States ambassadorship.

Mon. 3/2, 7p: Today, on Espejos de Aztlán we´ll talk about why do we want to be counted and why New Mexico Counts in the 2020 Census in a conversation hosted by Cristina Baccin.

On Espejos de Aztlán, author Dr. Mike Tapia guides us in the examination of gang history and its subcultures in this unique Southwest borderland region, and how promote changes that help youth-at-risk, hosted by Cristina Baccin.

Jennifer sat down with Espejos De Aztlán hosts, Froilan Orozco & Rafael Alejandro to talk about her documentary Eternos Indcocumentados, which captures the stories of recently arrived Central American refugees and explores the root causes of forced migration.

Mon. 10/14 7p: Espejos de Aztlán features an exclusive interview with Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) President, Dr. Thomas A. Saenz. Dr. Saenz sat down with Espejos De Aztlán hosts, Froilan Orozco, Moi Santos, & Rafael Alejandro to talk about important ongoing cases in immigration, education, and labor rights.

Mon. 10/7, 7p: On Espejos de Aztlán, we´ll speak about the EcoLiteracy Project at the University of New Mexico with Dr. Michelle Hall Kells and with Dr. Rachel C. Jackson about her research, “Resisting Relocation: Placing leadership on decolonized Indigenous landscapes”, hosted by Cristina Baccin.

Mon. 9/30, 7p: In Espejos de Aztlán, we speak about the Rudolfo and Patricia Anaya Symposia on the Indigenous Southwest with Dr. Melina Vizcaíno-Alemán, Associate Professor (Department of English, UNM) and Jason Asenap (Comanche and Muscogee Creek) writer and film director, hosted by Cristina Baccin.

Mon. 8/19 7p: This episode will introduce us to the music & educational collective called Las Brujas Jaraneras. This group practices and performs "Son Jarocho" music that is traditional to Veracruz, Mexico. The music collective talks about their educational philosophy and community outreach efforts.

Mon. 07/15/19 7p: This episode will take you through an audio journey into sanctuary. The story of Kadhim Albumohammed's asnctuary is told through his 19-year-old daughter, Courtney Albumohammed.

Mon. 6/18 7p: This episode features the stories of 10 year old BMX phenom, Taio Taylor, and 17 year old singer/songwriter, Santiago Roybal. Taio Taylor just made it to a world competition in Belgium where she will be representing the U.S. and New Mexico. Her family, Chacho Taylor, Robel Taylor, and Tatiana Taylor join us to talk about their experience in BMX bike riding and other projects.

Mon. 5/27 7p: This episode of Espejos de Aztlan features a lecture and reading by Demetria Martinez, who reads from her novel, Mother Tongue, and talks about the 1988 conspiracy in connection with allegedly transporting two Salvadoran refugees into the United States. This show also includes a brief history and and recount of today's Sanctuary Movement with Sanctuary Coordinator, Marian Bock. Recordings were conducted by the Humans of New Mexico collective.Froilan Orozco and Rafael Martinez are members of the Humans of New Mexico collective who produce stories of everyday people in Nuevo Mexico and contributors to the Espejos de Aztlan show.

This episode includes an interview with Albuquerque's very own, The Riddims, who will be talking to us about their "High Desert Reggae" musical fusion. The Riddims also preview songs from their upcoming album "Grounded."Froilan Orozco and Rafael Martinez are members of the Humans of New Mexico collective who produce stories of everyday people in Nuevo Mexico and contributors to the Espejos de Aztlan show.

Mon. 3/18 7p: This show features guests joining us from El Centro de la Raza, Rosa Isela Cervantes (Director), Noemi Gutierrez (Admin Support), Yesenia Ruiz (Student Program Specialist), and Sonia Ramirez and Elizabeth Ruiz (Student Success Leaders), who will talk to us about the legacy of the center in its 50 years of history and the ongoing leadership of women at UNM.
