Michael D. Beys L. Ac., D.A.C.m. is a graduate of Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. His training consisted of over 3000 hours and holds a doctorate in the study of acupuncture and herbal medicine. He was supervising acupuncturist at RUMC’s substance abuse Detox Center and South Beach Psychiatric Rehab facility. Currently, his practice focuses on fertility and women’s health, pain management, and substance abuse mental health.
In today's episode we talk about different ways we can heal our body naturally, women's health and pain relief with acupuncture.
Studies have shown that with the insertion of acupuncture needles the body responds in certain ways. Once the needle penetrates the skin, the body responds by treating the needle as a foreign invader. This triggers the body’s injury response. Since the needles are so fine and sterile, and the skin is swabbed with alcohol there is no injury or risk of infection. The injury response will divert the blood flow to the needle and increase circulation to the affected area. Today I’m talking to Jessica Salona and Elsa Pine, the creators of ZenPalz.com where they Share Mindfulness for kids through Meditation + Imagination. Together they help to create tools to help children learn to meditate, cope, and use their creative imaginations.
On their website zenpalz.com they have - different meditations for children, healthy tips and meals, bedtime stories, arts and crafts - it’s a really great resource. You can purchase either Rosie the unicorn or Jasper the fox, which come with a meditation mask for the toy and for the child, a rose quartz crystal in a secret pocket and it can sit with legs crossed or place a paw on her heart space.
We have Rosie the unicorn in our home - and my daughter who is 5 absolutely loves her. I share in the episode how we practice meditation and mindfulness and Rosie is such a great tool for kids to do that.
In this episode we share a lot of tips for raising children that are mindful. Studies show that the benefits of mindfulness for kids include: increased focus, attention, self-control, classroom participation, compassion, improved academic performance, ability to resolve conflict and overall well-being. Mindfulness also decreases levels of stress, depression, anxiety, disruptive behavior.

This is a super simple breathing technique (alternate nostril breathing) which helps to integrate the left and the right part of the brain, bringing more balance into your daily life. Other benefits: presence of now. Left brain is in charge of past and future, critical thoughts, language, analytical thought, balancing your checkbook, all important things. RIGHT brain- piece that is in charge of right now, inspiration, creativity and get creative problem solving ideas, and receiving downloads. You want these to work together in harmony. Alternate nostril breathing makes that happen. It also helps to oxygenate the blood and organs.The second part of this meditation is called Come To Your Senses + will truly bring you into the present moment, allowing all peace and happiness enter your state of being. A daily meditation practice is an investment that gets you happiness, quality sleep, creativity, better relationships, high performance and so much more. At age 3, I started singing solos at church and eventually, and in the round about way that is life, I went on to get a degree in Classical Vocal Performance. I performed a bit, but mostly taught. I loved helping people tap into their voice and hear it become the best it could be.Growing up I was the eldest of 4 kids, including one with special needs, and in a family that large, it’s easy for your voice to get overlooked. Add in difficult life situations and trauma, and it’s easy to learn to put aside your dreams for others, hide your true self, and change your voice to suit the needs of others.Over the years, I began to reconnect with my voice on multiple levels – with my inner voice, within my spirituality, and in how I express myself to the world. The past few years since becoming a mother have increased that exponentially. I became more connected to my intuition, and I’ve gained tools to help others connect with their voices.My passion is two-fold: First, to help people connect to themselves by practicing self care, so they can express their innate creativity in whatever form it may be. I thought I could cure it myself, which is really hard. I realized in order for me to be a good mom to start with, I had to know I was never going to be a perfect mom. And I had to have love for myself to give my kids. There’s always something to learn and you have to know that this can happen to you. You can’t do everything and that’s okay. Rob is the wonderful man behind our jingle you hear in the beginning and end of our show. Shownotes:Define happiness for yourself: Getting up everyday knowing I’m going to spend time with my kids. And spending the day creating and music and learning new things whether spiritual or a musical thing. Morning Routine: I get up and do yoga. I’ll try to meditate but if I don’t have time I try to do it later in the day.Spend time playing instruments. It’s all kind of technical, repetitive, and meditative types of things. And then it’s time to get the kids up. Evening Routine: Usually read. And if I haven’t meditated, I’ll do that then. 3 Self Care practices you can’t live without: Yoga Meditation Music How long do you spend doing yoga: Bodyweight training I’ll do less yoga and on the days I don’t do bodyweight training I do more intense yoga. So my practice can range from 20-40 minutes. Some days an hour. Something that wasn’t mentioned in your bio and your journey to becoming a musician: I think one thing that affected my work and my writing was that my mother is Bipolar. So growing up with that I think is unique. And when I look back at certain aspects of my childhood and everything. I didn’t know this was a thing until I witnessed it when I was 16 or 17, I saw her have an episode. From then on it was like a discovery of just learning certain things, as I was growing up, how her bipolarism affected certain things. And even a song on my new album is called “perfect stranger” which is about how we went on a trip to mexico and it was the first time I saw my mom have a breakdown. It was extremely traumatic and I remember being on the plane ride home sitting nest to a woman. She was probably early 20s. And I weirdly felt comfortable telling her everything that happened. And that’s basically the first time I confided in someone I didn’t know and you can hear certain lines in “Perfect Stranger” reflecting that. You go to schools and teach Kindness, Gratitude and Resilience. What Inspired you to start that and what kind of impact does it have on children?: The inspiration came from my friend Michael J. Chase. He wrote a few books: The Radical Practice of Loving Everyone: A Four-Legged Approach to EnlightenmentWhich he based the book on his dog that he recently lost Molly, and she’s on the cover of the book. So he had been doing this already and he loved my children’s CD and felt it went with what he was doing. So he was like, you should go into schools and do this. The vibration of music is really a powerful way to get a message across. I always work on making the program better in hopes to really reach everyone. What was the best decision you’ve made up until this point: There was a time where I took 4 years off from college and I started running a house painting business. I was studying music still in Boston but I was kind of floundering. I decided to sell the business cause I knew I didn’t want to do that. I ended up going back to school at U&H. And I was 25 at the time. And when I finally graduated I finally started working as a musician, which was my dream.Tell us about the most challenging time in your life and how you overcame it: I think it was definitely realizing what was going on with my mom. And how it took me so long to figure that out and make sense of that. And growing compassion towards those with mental illness. Mental illness is so devastating to young people. To overcome that I worked with a counselor and then a year ago I started seeing a therapist. Night Routine: Try to do a yoga class in the late afternoon. Have dinner. Catch up on computer work or watch a movie and hang out with friends. Or I’ll just wait to eat with my son. Evening Routine: Really about getting my son ready for bed, so I can have time with my husband. 7pm is bath and bedtime. He’s usually asleep by 7:30pm. Then I cook dinner for my husband. And I make a fresh dinner every night. What drew you to essential oils: I was blessed to have family members who used them and introduced me to them. What’s important is that there are oils that you can ingest and those that you can’t.
