In This Episode:
Void and BJ discuss Metroid Dread and end up tangenting a bit onto some of the old Metroid games as well. It’s a really good game. You should all team up on BJ to convince him to play it. Yes, this is Void writing the show notes this week. Seriously though, poke him at @professorbeej on twitter and bug him until he plays it
Weekly Geekery
BJ watched a handful of shows and movies while he was sick like Venom, Venom 2, Jupiter's Legacy, and Invincible. Void has mostly just been playing Metroid Dread but also finished Squid Game and got a new garage door opener (it’s more interesting than that sounds… well… I guess that’s subjective. Listen and find out for yourself).

Welcome back to the archives, y'all!
Last time, we dug into the Final Fantasy series, and this is part 3 of that. It is really fun to go back and see how we have changed (or not!) over the past 5 years. So give it a listen, have a laugh or two, and make sure to hit us up at @geektogeekcast on Twitter or on Discord (geektogeekmedia.com/discord) to let us know what you think and what other archive episodes you think are worth bringing to the forefront.
If you are just tuning in, Beej is still out with a jaw injury, so we thought it would be fun to have a few weeks of archive episodes going live. This is for two reasons. 1, we want the feed to be active and you to still get your Void-and-Beej fix so you don't go into withdrawals. 2, a lot of y'all are probably not OG listeners and have heard what we consider the highlights of the show. So we're going back and getting stuff going that you may want to hear.
Thanks for understanding and for being heckin' awesome.

In This Episode:
This week Void and Beej do a full PS5 review based on our first week with the new console. The guys have some radically different experiences and takeaways. It’s an interesting launch to a new console generation.
The main reason being that, as long-time listeners know, Beej and Void have completely different methods of playing video games, so their experiences with the PS5 and its features are equally different. The whole thing is a fantastic discussion, however, and both feel as though the console was worth buying at launch, despite some nits they pick.
Let us know what you think about the new console releases, too!

This week Void and Beej talk about Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian, especially the episode about the new technology that ILM and Unreal made for Disney to use in making The Mandalorian! We’re getting really hyped for Season 2 to kick off so this was the perfect subject to get our heads back into The Mandalorian universe.

For geekery, BJ is back into World of Warcraft and is finding a new community to play with regularly. He also has been dipping back into D&D and has plans for campaigns and one-shots with friends. BJ finished up Sabrina and loved the dark Halloweeny-ness of it. Void tried out the Dungeons & Dragons board game with his kids, has Genshin Impact on farm mode, and has finished the first battle pass of his life due to the Marvel season of Fortnite Chapter 2.

We’ve been playing a bunch of 3D Mario games. Which makes sense because it's the 35th anniversary of the release of Super Mario Bros on NES all the way back in 1985. We even did an issue of PRESS START on Mario at https://patreon.com/geektogeekcast!
Beej has been playing a TON of Mario games, not just 3D ones, either. But he finally beat Super Mario Odyssey and likes it a lot more than he did beforehand. Between Super Mario 3D Land and World, the level-based platforming is covered, the New Wii U Deluxe version is getting some Switch play, and then there's the brand new Super Mario 3D All-Stars that just released that everyone is playing and loving. He's playing that, too! Whew!
And Void is, too! He's focusing more on theSuper Mario 3D All-Stars part of things, but really loves him some Super Mario Galaxy. Enough that he beat it on its own already. He wants Super Mario Galaxy 2 for Switch, and his thinking is that we're going to see it as DLC for the All-Stars collection. Wouldn't that awesome? What do you think?
The guys go into even more depth on all the games in the series, really talking a stroll down memory lane for each and every 3D Mario game (and then some!).

And Void has been watching the Mandalorian with his kids, so they're finally getting into Star Wars from some of the newest and strongest content imaginable. They get to experience it all for the first time, and we're so jealous! Void then goes on about Fortnite and how the new Marvel content is some of the best stuff the game has ever done. Hands down. Action Game Shows are truly amazing. Whether we are kids watching Nickelodeon GUTS and Legends of the Hidden Temple, or we're adults binging Ninja Warrior and The Floor is Lava, these kinds of reality shows are never not fun to geek out about.
What got us thinking about this was watching the Jedi Temple Challenge on YouTube. Think of it like a Star Wars-themed Legends of the Hidden Temple that's Hosted by Ahmed Best (formerly Jar Jar Binks, but now a Jedi Master!). He is joined by a snarky commentator droid, who might be one of the best droids this side of BB-8. It appears as though these characters are canon, too, so Ahmed has finally become something truly awesome in the Star Wars universe.
We also talk a lot about the best ones from our childhoods, including Nick Arcade (watch it here: https://youtu.be/7ST-4I7EYVA), Double Dare (which Beej got to see live), Legends of the Hidden Temple, GUTS, American Gladiators, and more.
Beej also talks about why the Japanese version of Ninja Warrior (Sasuke) is way better than the American one. And Void gives him a lot of reasons why he should watch Ultimate Beastmaster on Netflix.

Our weekly geekery this time revolved around Howard, Forager, the fantastic movie Marriage Story, and Greyhound. I would write up a bunch about them here, but...you should just listen. You'll enjoy it more, haha!

This week we talk DC FanDome and BJ’s surprise full day of watching it when he wasn’t planning on it. Void watched all the trailers after the fact and has some thoughts on the video games that got announced. Much hype ensues.
Beej had planned on watching 1 or 2 sessions about Wonder Woman 1984, but ended up leaving it on all day, just streaming, and maybe missed an hour or two total, but it was so much fun. With the lack of pop culture news and how serious everything has been, it was so nice just to escape into comics and have good news and people loving stuff.
The top things that we talk about this wee are the new Gotham Knightsvideo game and how it seems to change the Arkham games formula up, even though it's not a continuation of that series -- Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League is actually in that universe. Weird, huh?
The Batman trailer has us incredibly excited about what it will be like, and Beej just wishes they'd release Wonder Woman 1984 already. Because they're not even saying the release date they've already announced, he's sure it'll get delayed again. However, the panels were great. The cast played werewolf and it was great. Love seeing them interact because they seem to adore each other. It was all worth it for the convo between Venus Williams and Patty Jenkins.
The Suicide Squad, both the movie and game, look far cooler than Beej would have ever thought, and he's actually excited for it. Plus, there's a giant shark-man called King Shark that you get to go around as and create carnage. And we all know how Void loves that. (I'm talking about Maneater, here, if you didn't realize.)
Beej kind of fanboys out about the Snyder cut, and he didn't mean to. Like at all. Guess that means he's excited for it. Who knew?
Black Adam had a fun panel with The Rock, but instead of a new trailer, they showed a Motion comic, which was honestly cooler. I want more motion comics. Please.
Jim Lee critiquing fan art in real-time was just so cool. Y'all have got to check this out. There are also videos of Batman The Animated Series talking with Batman Beyond while watching the Adam West Batman show from the '60s. It was glorious. Look it up.

In This Episode:
This week we talk Magic: The Gathering Jumpstart, the completely new format that Void loves (link below). MTG Jumpstart is both an online format that Arena uses as special events, but also an in-person, physical format where players can buy booster packs of cards set to a particular theme. These packs have 20 different cards in them, that are (apparently) semi-random. Then, you choose a second theme, shuffle them together, and you have a surprisingly versatile and useful deck -- at least against other Jumpstart decks.
We feel like the format could absolutely be wonderful in tournament form, and it's a great way to spice up home and friendly games, too. Grab a booster box and then go to town making fun themes like Treehugging Mermaids or Walled Lightning. Fun stuff.
Jumpstart really does seem to be a way for Magic: The Gathering to be more of an evergreen game without nearly the investment that keeps people from becoming long-term players. So yeah...we're excited about it. Void is very excited about it.
You can find out more about Magic: The Gathering Jumpstart here: https://magic.wizards.com/en/products/jumpstart
Weekly Geekery
Beej binged both seasons of Umbrella Academy, and is now hankering for more. He even subbed to ComiXology Unlimited to read the graphic novels to see how they compare. The discussion last week on Marvel's Avengers beta made him boot up Batman: Arkham Knight, but the batmobile ruined things for him.
Void spent a whole lot of time with Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, making it through the midpoint of the Desmond arc and getting reacquatinted with the open world feel the game uses. Recursion by Blake Crouch is a crazy good book that is really hard to explain, but deals with real and false memories and how they interact, and EVE Online was released as a mobile game called EVE Echoes, and it is...EVE. Though we're not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

In This Episode:
This week we talk about the recent release of Fall Guys and our experiences with the Marvel’s Avengers beta.
Fall Guys is the newest trend in battle royale gaming, only this time it's not a shooter. It's a floppy platformer! It's taken the world by storm, and the servers for this indie blockbuster were down for most of the weekend while they adjusted for the absurd demand for their title. It's free on PS+ for August 2020, so make sure you grab it if you're a member.
The Marvel's Avengers beta is well under way now, too, giving players a first-hand look at Crystal Dynamics' take on the Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Beej likes it a lot, but Void isn't necessarily sold on it yet. The beta gave them Destiny 2 vibes, some Marvel Ultimate Alliance feels, and juuuuust a dash of PS4 Spider-man. So if any of that sounds good to you, you should absolutely check it out. In fact, you should check it out regardless. The open beta for the software is going to be coming across every weekend until it's release, and you can get in on that on any platform if you check the beta schedule on Square Enix's website.

In This Episode:
This week it’s time to talk about what we’re proud about in our gaming history! After last week’s gaming shames we decided to discuss the opposite.
Beej and Void land in very different places with where they feel proud in gaming accomplishments.
In many ways, Beej's gaming prides are socially based, looking at how he's made various accomplishments with different online communities such as World of Warcraft, Star Wars Galaxies, and all the way back to Ultima Online. Void is impressed that Beej might have been the person who invented Lootboxes, haha.
Void, on the other hand, is proud of more single-player achievements, such as his major playthroughs of the entire Final Fantasy and Zelda series. Plus a lot more, obviously. He plays a lot of games, after all.
We also discuss how these kinds of gaming prides and achievements are related to in-game achievements and trophies that are provided by the developers. Do we feel proud of getting those? Do they affect how we play the game in any meaningful way?
We talk about it, and you'll just have to listen.
Weekly Geekery
BJ finished Avatar: The Last Airbender (which might be one of the best TV shows he's ever seen) and Link’s Awakening (Zelda with training wheels, really, but super fun), as well as sampling some new games like Jump Force, Spongebob Squarepants: The Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated, and Golf Story.
Void watched Hamilton multiple times already even though it only released a few days ago, and he expects it to become even more of a staple in his life, being one of the movies he puts on when there's nothing else that sounds good. He also crit-pathed his way through Assassin’s Creed 3 in record time (well, maybe not record time, but definitely faster than most playthroughs). He talks about what the series looks like when playing it from a returner's perspective.

Thu, 09 Jul 2020 - 54min - 229 - S5E26 - Gaming Shames - “It actually made me think for awhile”
In This Episode:
Gaming shames are an interesting topic. People talk about what games they should have played or things that everyone should have done, and if they haven't, they should be ashamed of themselves. For one reason or another. We wanted to talk about that. Beej got the idea from The RPG After Years podcast's Discord when they were talking about RPG shames. So thanks, y'all!
We talk about various things like Mario games to Assassin's Creed Rogue, all the way down to Beej just giving up on bosses and watching the endings of games on YouTube. But the real question is...are they ashamed of themselves? You'll just have to listen to see!
Weekly Geekery
Void is super happy with the war movie 1917 and discusses how well-made it is, and that it's a must-see for anyone who loves war movies. And he has some really fun geekery that has to do with some gaming shames, too. But why would we spoil that for you here? We want you to listen to the full episode? So press play, you heathen!
Beej got some review copies of comics from TKO Studios, and he's mega impressed by them. They're released in bingeable formats, even as individual issues, and after reading the first issue of Jeff Lemire's Sentient, he just sat there and read all 6. This is exactly what review copies are for because after experiencing that first arc, he's 100% down to buy the rest of that series as it's released. You can check out the first issues of their stuff digitally here and get 20% off your order with code GEEK2GEEK20. We highly recommend it.
They even sent me this cool graphic to use!
All that said...we want to hear from you!
What are some of the shames you feel around gaming? What are your biggest gaming shames? Let us know!

In This Episode:
We talk all about pulling old game concepts and genres up to modern standards and making them feel new! We dig into the idea of taking an old idea lying fallow and make it new and interesting again.
Where’s the line between homage, rip off, just establishing a new genre, ongoing series?
Void playing Valorant is what spawned the idea because it feels so much to him like a Counter-Strike follow-up. Whether that's good or bad, we can't say. But he knows that's how playing it feels. So is that theft of the CS idea? Or is it revitalization of an old formula, giving it new life with a different spin?
We discuss other games like this, too, from Castlevania and Metroid, to Bloodstained, to Overwatch and even JRPGs that have taken their cues from Chrono Trigger over the years.
Plus, there are games that have taken the base engine of a game like WarCraft 3, and then made a new game out of it...like DOTA did. We have Fortnite and PUBG that came from an ARMA mod, and even Counter-Strike itself was a Half-Life 2 mod. Where is the line in here that separates the original idea from the evolution?
There's a lot to this topic, and we aren't 100% sure that we even named it right. But it's one of our favorite discussions we've had in a long time. So join us and let's talk about some games!
Weekly Geekery
We also have all sorts of things in weekly geekery like Dragon Quest IV, Hitman 2, Final Fantasy Lost Stranger, Archero, and some off the cuff PS5 reveal impressions.
And here's the link to the Hitman NoClip documentary that Void talks about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_stW6JvB4SI

In This Episode:
This week it’s the best stuff of the first half of 2020! BJ and Void always take an episode to stop and reflect on all the great geeky stuff that resonated with us in the first half of the year. It lets us touch on all the things that get forgotten by year end! Find out what we enjoyed the most and what may stick with us all the way until our end of the year episode.
We talk about Books, Movies, TV, Video Games, and even Board Games! All kinds of media that we want to call out so that you can get as much enjoyment out of it as we did. Stuff gets lost in the shuffle, and we really think there are some gems here.

In This Episode:
Void and Beej are homebound during the pandemic, just like most people are. We talk about what we’ve been up to, what keeps grabbing our interest, and what has been the best distraction from the news of the world.
For the most part, we figure that social games of some sort work. We highly suggest Mario Kart of any kind. If you have access to anything Mario Kart, its worth playing with others during this time.
You could also play Mario Party, which has been a blast over the internet for Beej. Final Fantasy XIV and World of Warcraft are always good choices, and Beej is on FFXIV Leviathan server as Lesser Wyrmsbane. Joe from Geektitude is on WoW, himself, but you'd have to ask him how to find his character (@epicgrays on Twitter).
We also touch on Luigi's Mansion 3, My Little Scythe (a good intro to Eurogames, apparently), and Knighthood on iOS. Fun stuff, really. I mean, we're all indoors, gotta do something.
Also, Animal Crossing New Horizons is amazing. Really amazing. And Void tries to convince BJ to give it a try. The things you can do on the island are so chill and relaxing, it's a fantastic way to spend a few hours while the outside world is so stressful. Open your gates, have some friends over, and just cross those animals. (Beej wrote this and doesn't understand the game. You cross animals, right? Like Dr. Moreau? Because it's on an Island this time? Get it? The Island of...ahhh, I give up.)

In This Episode:
Void and Beej are here with hard earned tips and tricks for working from home. We’ve done this off and on for years at this point so we wanted to let everyone know some of the things we’ve figured out that a lot of you are dealing with for the first time.
Separate Work Space From Home Space
If you don’t have enough room for that… then you need a “work mode” and “home mode” for your setup.
Void has always had a work desk and a home desk in different areas of the house. His home desk has his gaming PC while the work desk is only set up for a laptop with work stuff on it.
Beej does, this, too. He has both a laptop and a desktop and finds that when he needs to really work, he can get on the laptop to be less distracted from stuff than on the gaming pc. The Macbook is set up solely for work, while the gaming PC can be used for both.
When You're Done, Be Done
No one is watching you as closely as you think they are. Bosses included. You have to work and hit your deadlines, but when your day is supposed to be over, then truly disconnect and let it be over.
If you have a Do Not Disturb function (Slack does, for instance), use it. Some jobs might not have this luxury, but if you do, set a time for DND mode and abide by it.
Beej, for instance, stops working around 5pm but keeps Slack on DND past 7pm. That way, communication can still happen and handled when necessary, but it's on his terms. After 7pm, it can wait until 8am.
Take Breaks From Your Workspace
In the office, this happens organically through a lot of interruptions, casual chats, trips to the water cooler, and things like that. It won’t happen as much at home. Things will distract you, yes, but they won't be "breaks" as often.
We've found that these are the best ways to disconnect for us. But yours might be different. That's okay. Just make sure you're taking breaks and disconnecting from work at regular intervals.
15-minute walk around the block, house, yard
Play a video game for half an hour Take an actual hour break for lunch and make yourself some home-cooked food Beej suggests In The Floor Time with your pets. It really brightens the day.Communication is the Most Important Skill for Remote Work
You need to stay in contact with your co-workers and supervisors. But it doesn't have to be constant. If you’re responding to people in an hour or less, you’re typically doing just fine. Emails can even wait longer because most people don't check them constantly.
Don't be afraid of phone calls. Casual chats can’t happen so sometimes it’s a lot easier to get on the phone instead of sending 15 emails back and forth.
Video chats actually do help, too. One-on-one calls with supervisors or employees with video make you feel much less alone.
Talk to Other Humans. Regularly.
No matter what kind of communication it is, make sure you're talking to other human bei --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/geektogeekcast/support
Wed, 18 Mar 2020 - 42min - 213 - S5E10 - Final Fantasy Extravaganza! FF7 Remake Demo, FF XV DLC, and FFXIV - “It bothered me a little bit”
In This Episode:
We talk about where we stand with the Final Fantasy franchise right now. There's the FFVII Remake Demo on PS4, some FFXIV Shadowbringers talk, and even Void getting to the FFXV DLC that really should have been part of the main game!
FF7 Remake Demo, Misc Thoughts:
Void - Combat is fine. Not the best, not the worst. Curious to dig into the materia system.
Beej - it’s not great, but at least it’s not totally button mashing with no real depth
Void - Likes it better than FFXV. It feels more responsive.
Beej - It feels like Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy XV had a baby, and XV has the dominant genetics
Void really wants to replay it in “classic” mode to see how it feels.
No jump button. Beej hates. You jump like in older 3d Zelda games, by running up to a ledge. It’s awkward. And I want to jump while running around, dangit.
The buttons change their function based on combat, so if you get aggro and expect to dash away, think again. You’ve just opened up your tactics menu for a party member.
The character swapping/menu opening during combat seems counterintuitive. Pressing X to open the menu instead of the D-Pad Up/Down made Beej constantly swap party members back and forth when all he needed was a Potion or to cast Thunder. Other SE games trained us that D-pad was how menus work in real-time ARPGs. Why change it now? WHY?
It’s already obvious that it’s going to be much more fleshed out, both in terms of the world and the story. It will be filling in the gaps between the screens of the original while still making everything logically connect on the map is super impressive.
Our primary concern is making the city of Midgar not seem samey all over. We want diverse locations and neighborhoods.
The voice acting is top-notch -- except for Barrett. If he never speaks again, it will be too soon.
Cloud and the others are all distinct and unique and it never felt out of place the way some voices feel in games.
Talking to you as you move through the levels like in FFXV, getting to know your companions organically.
Hype Level and Final Impressions?
Void - much more excited (and I was already excited)
BJ - I’ll buy it now. (Had cancelled my preorder and was waiting on initial opinions from people I trust)
FFXV DLC
Gladio - What if FFXV was a series of melee battle challenges?
Prompto - What if FFXV was a Third person shooter?
Ignis - What if FFXV was an area control game?
There’s a part of Ignis’ story that should 100% be in the main game and not the DLC. Can’t believe this got cut from the story of the main game. If there’s one DLC that you should play out of all of them… it’s this one.
Ardyn - What if we had more of the background story of the main villain of the game? Makes him even more symp --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/geektogeekcast/support
Thu, 12 Mar 2020 - 42min - 212 - S5E10 - Beejstravaganza (and Altered Carbon, Season 2) - "I've just been fanboying out over here"
In this episode:
Void is gone, Beej now rules the roost Altered Carbon Season 2 Reading the book, too The story takes a lot from the second and third books and mixes them together It’s really a totally new narrative from either of them, which is interesting given how closely the first season kept to the major plot points of the book They did show an Elder (Martians in the books) in one scene, and I thought it was great. But if you weren’t necessarily a fan of the books, it might not have made a lot of sense why there was a winged gargoyle creature jumping at the screen DQ of the Stars Mobile gacha Plays like a normal RPG in some ways, very much like an automated gacha in others It has the same kind of upgrade system as stuff like FF Brave Exvius and FF Record Keeper Support the Podcast patreon.com/geektogeekcast Network Talk! In This Episode:
We both played through Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order and have a ton of thoughts on it. Overall, we liked it a lot!
More Metroid DNA than we expected, and the combat is more Souls like than we thought (but it'sclosest to Sekiro Shadows Die Twice).
The core premise of the game is great, and the world building that goes on is one of its strongest points.
The characters are engaging from the beginning, even the side characters. Prauf, Greez, Cere...the villains, everyone. They’re well-rounded and make for a story that you become emotionally involved in immediately.
Kal, the protagonist, is the weakest link in the story. And he’s not bad. Just...fine. He's the blank slate character. So yeah
BD-1 is an excellent droid. He interacts with Kal in the best ways.
Lightsaber customization is always fun. Took too long to get various lightsaber colors, though.
Force vision and flashback sequences are amazingly well done. Learning new skills and powers really feels like you're learning them.
The Echoes and dialogue they trigger are some of Beej's favorite parts of the game. Some of the most fun I’ve had is piecing together those peripheral stories and reading them in order.
Difficulty level adjustments on the fly. Every game should have this.
Combat got boring until Void cranked it down to storymode and then he felt like a Jedi. The load times on an original PS4 are 3-4 minutes long, and even though the combat is fairly enjoyable on normal difficulties, the load times are not. So Story Mode was a much better option overall.
Lot of slides. They're...not great. Beej didn’t mind most of the slides. But holy crap were there a lot and the clipping on the landings after jumps was really bad.
Interested in the Jedi who rejected the force and the padawan that became the ninth sister. As well as the Fallen Jedi and force users who survived the purge.
Kinda disappointed that more than half of the worlds are ones we know super well in the lore (Ilum, Kashyyyk, Dathomir). I wish it had created more new worlds.
Exploration isn’t super rewarding. It’s almost always just cosmetic things which… Void just kinda shrug at. They’re very meh. Ponchos. So. Many. Ponchos.
Nightsisters were interesting for the first time ever. I liked Merrin’s story because she’s an actual person instead of just an evil force witch (like Nightsiters typically are)
For Geekery this week BJ has been getting back into Star Wars with Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes and Star Wars Rebels. He’s also still hooked on Mario Kart Tour and Luigi’s Mansion 3.
Void watched The Crown Season 3, played around with CarPlay, and watched more of The Mandalorian.
