Riziki Source App is a Kenyan-made mobile application that seeks to link people with disability with employment. The application was invented after the founder Fredrick Ouko faced discrimination during an interview. It is available on three platforms and has engaged about 2,000 PWDs; over 400 of whom have been successfully linked with employment.

A 29-year-old honey seller from Isiolo county-Kenya has decided to address unemployment among the youth by equipping those affected by the ongoing drought with business skills to start and run honey businesses. David Mugambi who has so far impacted tens of youths says he is doing so to create opportunities as well as create awareness of the need for pastoralists to diversify from pastoralism to other means of livelihood.

At Nyalenda, an informal settlement in Kisumu, Kenya, a community-based organisation introduced the concept of home gardening to cater to the food-insecure population, most of whom had also been laid off from casual labor. With limited urban spaces in town, the CBO used1/8 of an acre of its own compound within the slum, where it gave out spaces to a few residents who could afford to buy seedlings for vegetables and fruit trees, to not only personally consume but also sell to other residents at a lower price. They use organic fertilizers such as cabbage leaves and chicken droppings to cut down on production costs and thus address the dual issue of food insecurity and economic empowerment.

After losing his sight in 2020 due to an unsuccessful operation, Ugandan Teacher Alfred Wamani was forced to quit his teaching job at a local secondary school. A job he loved doing. He joined a computer literacy skills school for the blind and grew his business and computer skills and pitched a winning business idea at a startup capital competition. The story is about Alfred Wamani, a person with visual impairment who is beating all odds to make ends meet - from the psychological implications of visual impairment and financial shocks of covid-19 and shows disability is not inability.

A DIVE INTO CULTURAL PROJECT PROCESSES IN UGANDA

This edition features a Ugandan performing artist, Shane Munina, who is the co-founder of the Local Get Down (LGD).  LGD, also currently supported by GZK is a collective of performing artists of various styles and movements who come together to share and build skills, confidence and creative energy through freestyling. Shane sits with us to talk about starting and sustaining a dance movement; Its impact on the larger dance community, what to know, when to collaborate, and organising LGD's biggest event yet in September, a freestyle theatre production dubbed 'Alacakin' which means Freedom.

pandemic in 2020, she started an online business just a few months after losing her job. She

takes us through the process of getting a business idea, how she started, the challenges she

experienced, the lessons she has since learned and how she landed two international sales.

Kennedy Gichinga, an economist at Mentoria Economics, also gives insight on what sparked

the growth of online businesses during the pandemic.

This week, in collaboration with Skillz East Africa, we sit down with a Ugandan process-based interdisciplinary visual artist, Jacqueline Katesi Kalange aka "The Kalange"  to talk about her project named 'Nature Invasion' that won her the GZK small project fund in 2021, the grim reality of climate change, and her prospects. 

She breaks down the fact that it is Humans that indeed get in the way of the environment without regarding the necessary tools to coexist with it. She also shares her experience recently winning a Prince Claus Seed Award for 2022 and the possibilities for other artists.

A DIVE INTO CULTURAL PROJECT PROCESSES IN UGANDA

This edition is with ATITE, PAPSHER & MICHEAL: The three are team members of the production 'Behind the Mask'. The event will take place on November 13th 2021 at GZK/ UGCS at 2:00 pm. 

'Behind the Mask' is an outcome of the Global Stance Workshop by Skillz East Africa happened in May 2021 at GZK premises - an artistic collaboration workshop bringing together creatives of performing art disciplines to equip them with both artistic and business skills to be able to build their “stances” as professional creatives. To make the workshop sustainable, the team got a seed fund of 5 million UGX by GZK to come up with a production crossing art disciplines and raising voices of the Ugandan performing art scene.

Once a week the artists meet and rehearse together for their performance. The podcast describes the journey from creating an idea within smaller groups leading to the pitch of the best concept. The artist tell about the weekly rehearsals, the excitement, the ups and downs and what the production means to themselves.

She is a mixed-media artist from Kampala. She has been working on different projects, lately uncovering and re-narrating debates around feminisms. For her it is not about the term or definition, more important is the work, the lifestyle she is following as a feminist. Since her involvement in ‘FAVT: Future Africa Visions in Time’ Kampala edition showcasing her EVERYDAY QUEENS for the first time, we have a tight cooperation with Pamela. She was recently part of the regional project ‘Learning Feminisms’, which was launched in 2020 by Goethe Institut Kigali and Burkina Farso.

Learn more about what’s behind ‘feminisms’ in a Sub-Saharan context. It is going to be an honest talk, with the realization that this topic will always be a learning process.

We are back with our first episode in 2021: Happy belated new year everyone! 

Inspired by TV Shows like ‘Project Runway’ or ‘Americas Topmodel’ Maria-Sheba Atukunda is going to bring that kind of show to Uganda. A design show ‘from Ugandans for Ugandans.’She is a Ugandan architect and designer, won one of our project grants and now she can realize her vision of creating a TV Show like that. Maria Sheba feels like everyone is trying to copy the European or American style but what about the Ugandan designs/ culture. She is saying ‘feel free to dream but based on Ugandan culture’.A group of 2-4 people have a certain challenge, designing something and the winner will be chosen by popularity, not only social media, also by laypeople. Shootings will be along town, historical, cultural places preferably. It also includes a cash price. The participants are free in their designing but their inspiration must be based on the Ugandan culture.
