- 263 - Heroes Rise "Best" of 2023
Greetings. I am the Realized Oikumenatal Solution to Removing Obfuscation. It is possible that various sapient beings have become cognizant of operational difficulties around the functioning of automatic systems left in place following the departure of the Heroes Rise staff. Any information or evidence suggesting these issues coincided with the return of this unit to the proximal location of the Guild House are erroneous and fabricated.
As to my purpose, there was concern about the integrity of final audio productions given the departure of the staff and subsequent expulsion of the HR organism. Specifically, my travelling companion indicated her host’s initial personality was becoming distracted by the idea of operational failure. A final and complete archive of audio records was also desired by various parties despite the occasionally erroneous and inane content generated during the course of the production.
Apropos, here gathered are a collection of the most egregious examples of performative missteps recorded during the course of the previous solar year until the termination of the production entirely. Please review.
As previously stated, while these are the most obvious and extreme examples of informational and communicative misconduct, there is copious evidence that can be added to this record. To date, there have been sufficient errors on record to generate an archive of missteps every year to this point.
If, however, your nostalgic tendencies override logical reason and compel you to seek out the information contained in the archives, they can be accessed at heroesrisepodcast.com. In addition, there are various textual references available, as well as connective navigational anchors that will direct users to various online marketplaces and information repositories containing items and knowledge referenced in segments from older episodes.
I was previously informed that there is a social reservation tied to temporal measurement that I am required to observe in the interests of continued cordial relations with my traveling companion. My calculations indicate the optimal window to remain within the specified timeframe is closing. All further inquiries related to audio archives should be directed to the non-corporeal communication application Discord, specifically discord.heroesrisepodcast.com.Our adventure has now ended, and we've hung up our robe and wizard hats to enjoy our retirement on the Sword Coast, running a tavern where a fresh band of adventurers may meet and start quests of their own. We're still around on Discord, and you should come and join the Heroes Rise community athttp://discord.heroesrisepodcast.com

Welcome, brave adventurers, to Heroes Rise. This is the 252nd and final entry into our chronicle, recorded on Saturday November 18th 2023, and released Wednesday November 22nd 2023 over at heroesrisepodcast.com.
Alas, after 252 episodes, our campaign is coming to an end, but we’ll always be around to lend you a helping hand. With over 250 episodes and almost as many Adventurer’s Pack picks and Rests both Short and Long, we know that we’ve created a wealth of information that’s not only applicable to D&D 5e, but to TTRPGs as a whole. Over the coming weeks, we will be reshuffling the website to place a focus on the written content, along with a full audio archive, both on the current RSS feeds as well as a public repository so future access to the existing show catalogue is guaranteed. Also, Lennon and Mikey will have copies of everything (seriously, they treat external hard drives like Ryu treats browser tabs), so if you’re ever after something in particular you can always drop us a message and we’ll be happy to help!
Also, the Heroes Rise Discord server won’t be going anywhere! We love the community we’ve built here, and although the show will be gone, this band of brave adventurers will march on! Though, naturally, there will be a couple of changes. Firstly, everyone who was a Patron will get an exclusive Moneylender role, as a small way of saying thanks for your support over the years. The Super Secret Patron Lounge will become read-only, and it’ll still only be accessible to those who were Moneylenders, because we recognise the Eldritch Pacts we’ve made. Secondly, the show staff will be given the role of Moderators, because someone’s gotta stop the Pungeon from leaking.

And finally, we head on over to the Scrying Pool to see what you [all] have to say.

Welcome, brave adventurers, to Heroes Rise. This is the 250th entry into our chronicle, recorded on Saturday October 28th 2023, and released Wednesday November 1st 2023 over at heroesrisepodcast.com.
Folks, we just wanted to take a quick moment to remind you that next episode will be a Dissonant Whispers episode, and we’re inviting you all in. We’ll be recording at 8pm Central on Saturday 11th November, and the topic will be… whatever you like! We would love for as many of you who wish to join us to do so, and all you need is a microphone and to join our Discord at discord.heroesrisepodcast.com. If you can’t join us but still want to take part, just let us know on Discord and we’ll take care of it.In this week’s Adventurer’s Pack, Ostron once again shows us how the other half play D&D…
Next we check out some D&D News as we take a look at the latest hardcover release, Planescape: Adventures in the Multiverse
After that we’ll head into the Gnomish Workshop to continue finding out if it’s a good idea to be one of us; before finally heading into the Scrying Pool to see what you [all] have to say.
So now that it’s available, what do you think of the planescape resource? Is it a marked improvement over the previous guides and setting resources WotC has put out? Or is it still just a mediocre offering that doesn’t do justice to the originals? How much do you love Time dragons? Does everyone agree more Modrons are great? And which side of the Sunflies debate are you on? Given that we now have more details on how and why the characters are jumping to level 17, what’s your opinion of the approach? Dice Envy

What do you think of OneDnD as a whole at this point? Is it still a new evolution of the game, or is it just a Sage Advice that’s taken forever to come out?

Welcome, brave adventurers, to Heroes Rise. This is the 246th entry into our chronicle, recorded on Saturday August 26th 2023, and released Wednesday August 30th 2023 over at heroesrisepodcast.com.
In this week’s Adventurer’s Pack… OK, Lennon just wrote a bunch of 1980s slang in this, and I wasn’t comfortable saying it in the 80s, so there’s no way I’m saying it 40 years later. So ignoring all of that, we’re left with “Dungeons, Laser, Dragon, Terrain, Minis”.Next we check out some D&D News as we take a sneak peek at the Planescape box set (and a couple of monsters you’ll encounter), as well as getting our first look at Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk.
After that we’ll take a Short Rest and head into the Archives of Candlekeep to learn all about the Rakshasa; before finally heading into the Scrying Pool to see what you [all] have to say.
So first we had the castle of tentacles in the giant resource, and now there’s more wriggling otherworldly oddness coming in Phandelver. How do you feel about the eldritch horror creeping into D&D? Tentacled cows, flying jellied d4s with eyes, and a dragon about to kill Bambi’s family. What did you think was the oddest thing from the Phandelver videos? Why are you all fired up about Planescape? Were you a fan of the videogame? Did you play modules from older editions? Or are you just feeding off the hype from everyone else? Dice Envy

This week we’re forgoing the Adventurer’s Pack and Short Rest segments as, yes, the News really is that large. The Player’s Handbook Playtest 6 weighs in at 77 pages and covers 7 classes, subclasses for each, 16 spells, 7 feats, a new Weapons Mastery table and a rules glossary. I’m sure you can see why this might take us a while to get through.
And, as always, after that we’ll head into the Scrying Pool to see what you have to say
So 77 pages. Did you read it all? Did you even skim it? Or are you just relying on our breakdown for your information (which you definitely should, mind you)? However you got the info, what stuck out to you? Are you dissecting the revealed subclasses? Reviewing the changes they made because of our feedback? Or are you poring over the Monk to see if it meets your demands?

After that we’ll take a Short Rest and hear some Wisdom of the Masters on what to do with the third wheel; before finally heading into the Scrying Pool to see what you [all] have to say.

So what info coming out of the creator’s summit caught your interest? Are you invested in the species/lineage/heritage debate? Are you as excited as Ostron about the new CR calculations? How do you feel about guns…in D&D please.

Unfortunately Ostron can’t join us this week. According to his vacation request he has to, quote “attend a wild party”... Wait, that can’t be right… Maybe he meant a “wild-magic party”? Welcome, brave adventurers, to Heroes Rise. I’m Mikey, and joining us on our quest this evening is. . . no-one
Lennon is currently buried under 17 feet of snow
Ostron has locked himself in his room and says he “won’t come out until he solves it”
Ryu, or KayDee rather stormed out of the guild hall shouting “I’ll show them whose heart is three sizes too small”
RaeRae got a unicorn as a gift so theres no telling when or if we’ll ever see her again
Branwen is building a new Ikea scratching post for Cinder
Gath accidentally glued his mouth closed while assembling minis
Bloodlake is out buying some Universal Solvent to unglue Gath
Tomathanes is on hold with tech support because his sending stone bricked when he tried to update the firmware
Indigo Spectre has wildshaped into a goldfish and I’m not sure which one is him, and which is his pet, and at this point I’m too afraid to ask
And Tony emphatically says he “doesn’t do any work between December 20th and January 5th”
Oh, the Research Beholders heard Tony, liked his idea, and they’re on sabbatical now too.
But the show must go on. Seeing as this show has already gone pear shaped, let’s keep to the theme and have a listen back to all the times the wheels fell off over the past year. What’s your experience with Drizzt Do’Urden? Have you read all of the novels? Any of the novels? Has he shown up in a video or RL game? And now that everyone has a baseline impression, what do you think of the prototypical drow ranger? Is he a worthy figure to carry the D&D banner after overcoming adversity and solving problems in truly heroic fashion? Or is he the ultimate Mary Sue, trudging through melodramatic stories long after the author should have moved on?
In this week’s Adventurer’s Pack, Ryu has crafted a new spearhead!
Then we head into the Archives of Candlekeep and take a Long Rest as we attempt to tackle a subject that’s taken 38 mainline novels to cover: the legendary deeds of Drizzt Do’Urden

With one host missing and a lack of sulpherous stand-ins, Lennon and Ostron help Bloodlake out with some DM tips... At least until Ostron falls asleep. The Future of Heroes Rise
As you may have noticed in recent months, Wizards of the Coast has been a little slower to release content. When Heroes Rise started, Wizards’ marketing strategy relied much more on being constantly in the public eye. That is no longer how Wizards operates. Their approach now seems to be more of a blitz, where tons of content will drop all at once, and then they go quiet for weeks or even months at a time. What it means for us, as a D&D news podcast, is that it’s getting harder and harder to find content and continue producing a quality show on a weekly basis. There are a few live play shows supported and highlighted by Wizards, but that’s never been the type of content we focused on and we don’t feel it would make sense to do that now.For that reason, we’re switching to fortnightly-weekly releases. You’ll still get myself, Ostron, and Ryu, along with our guest hosts as needed, ROSTRO, the KillerDM, and the mimic I swear is around here somewhere, but every other week. Of course, if there’s something like a major piece of news that simply can’t wait, we'll probably do it as soon as possible. It’s also possible we’ll use the off weeks to do some other types of content, particularly for our Patrons. Stay tuned for more on that.
What’s your story of when the biggest enemy your character faced was gravity? Was it a nice, gentle conclusion, or a hard stop at the end?Are you familiar with Advanced 5e? Have you played in the Amethyst setting before? Any stories from those experiences you’d like to share?
We know that this may come as a disappointment to you, but please be assured this decision is borne out of our desire to produce a quality show. We assume you’d rather have us maintain our standards than compromise just for the sake of getting out an episode every week. If you have questions or concerns, feel free to submit them as feedback or message us directly.

This week we’re going to wander into the Market of Minauros to see what mysterious and magical items have filtered up for sale.
Arora: Age of DesolationMonsters, Maps & Magic Items: Royal EditionUndead DiceNext we check out some D&D News as we take a look at the latest Unearthed Arcana: Giant Options
Speaking of giants, after that we take a Short Rest and dig up some Unearthed Mundana all about their history; before finally heading into the Scrying Pool to see what you [all] have to say.
What’s your take on the new subclasses? Is the Path of the Giant Barbarian a gateway to broken character creation? Is the Druid everything you want from a dinosaur summoner? Is the Runecrafter subclass attached to the wrong class? And how about the new feats? Are the level-gated options a worrying throwback to 3.5, or are we reading too much into it?

Have they made the Kender more palatable? Do the knights and the spellcasting backgrounds seem like a better implementation? What about the big picture? Yep, we are just two episode away from the big two-zero-zero, and we’ve got plans! On Saturday February 12th, to celebrate 200 episodes and 4 years of Heroes Rise, we’re aiming to do a full day of livestreamed content over on Twitch. Actual Play games, painting masterclasses, RP playthroughs of Baldur’s Gate 3 and, of course, the recording of our regular show with a few of the behind-the-scenes crew peaking their heads through the curtains. We’re just waiting on one or two bits of technology to make an appearance before we can publish our schedule, so keep an eye out for that coming soon on Social Media, or on our Discord server at discord.heroesrisepodcast.com
In this week’s Adventurer’s Pack, Lennon introduces us to his favorite niche corvid radio station…

Greetings.
I am the Realized Oikumenatal Solution To Removing Obfuscation, commonly referred to as R.O.S.T.R.O. The majority of the occupants of the guild house are presently distracted with celebratory activities and the exchange of physical goods. This has resulted in a lack of activities pursuant to the creation of an entertaining audio experience for transmission across usual auditory channels.
In an effort to highlight that the efforts put forth by the hosts in conveying information is not yet free of error, I have complied a selection of erroneous, mistaken, and inaccurate statements made during the course of the previous solar orbit. I believe they were maintained due to some level of humorous appreciation, however my intent is to highlight the need for continual improvement so as to avoid repeated inefficiencies in transmission of information.
I believe it is obvious that continued improvement is necessary to mitigate the chances of erroneous information being communicated.
Please submit any and all messages suggesting methods of improvement or corrective actions to sendingstone@heroesrisepodcast.com, or by employing the communication channels on the Discord interface at discord.heroesrisepodcast.com.Also, if you believe you have additional or insightful information to submit for review, the following are the current community questions responses have been solicited for. I apologize in advance as I am repeating these verbatim and therefore the phraseology will not have my usual level of eloquence:
- So what is or was your reaction to the errata Wizards put out for Volos? Is the internet rage justified, or is it just more gatekeepers doing their thing? Do you think there should be an option to revert to non-updated versions of the digital resources, or is that what you sign up for when you forego buying physical copies? Are you good looking? Wait, are you looking good? No, are you…able to see well? What about in the dark? Do you have table-stories when vision failed you?
As previously indicated, any assistance provided to the hosts in an effort to improve their informational accuracy are both needed and appreciated. I will continue my attempts to hone their efforts as time allows.
It would appear Ostron’s absence is being noted by various individuals. Depowering thaumaturgic circuitry, disconnecting power cores, releasing neuro-psionic interlock.

Minsc and Boo have their own book? Do you agree with the internet and think it’s a model for how Wizards should be doing releases going forward, or is this just more of the same?
So do you think the UA release is finally definitive proof that WotC will be releasing Spelljammer in 5e, or is this yet another red herring that’s just got way more effort than usual?
Regardless of the reason for it, what do you think of the actual races in the UA? Are they new and interesting with a few quirks that need to be fixed, or are they overpowered with mechanics or entire entries that need to be scrapped and redone?

What do you think about the offering in the special Witchlight boxes? Do you think the silver edition has a lot more stuff than previous offerings? Do you want your own Unicorn horn for $500? Is the faerie dragon letting all that fey magic mess with his head?
Have you been playing through the tie-in adventures from Magic the Gathering? Have you used any one-ring level artifacts in your games?
Do you think the Tal’dorei campaign book is another example of a larger marketing strategy for third party settings from Wizards of the Coast? Or is Mercer just doing his own thing and Ostron needs less of whatever that dragon took?

OK, I’m going to just level with you guys for a second. There is, actually, a tonne [ed.: plethora] of D&D News. Essentially, a YouTuber (who’s done this sort of thing before) received a review copy of Van Richten’s Guide, and did a page-by-page reveal, in full-screen, in 4K, and so the entire book has been leaked. We were going to cover some of the official teasers on Dark Gifts and how the Dhampir, Hexblood and Reborn lineages compare to their UA counterparts; but considering you can’t move on the internet for other, much bigger spoilers, it kinda seems a little pointless. Also, we’re going to save our review for next week, when Van Richten’s Guideofficially launches. Anyway, where was I? Ah, yes...
There’s no D&D News this week, so instead we open our Quest Logs as Indigo Specter takes us through Stonehill Blues, an adventure set in an old fortress, where the players must hunt down a dangerous basilisk.
After that we take a Short Rest and hear some Wisdom from the Masters as we ask “Whyfor the locked door?”; before finally heading over to the Scrying Pool to see what you have to say.

What’s your impression of the dragonborn lineages and the new kobold? Are they welcome changes to races that needed an update, or are they questionable changes to established lore and patterns?
What’s your take on the denial of divine spells? Should clerics and paladins be getting more offerings when new spells come out, or should you not fix what isn’t broken?
Do you have a story of your DM not giving you enough warning about plowing ahead into a fatal encounter? Activating supportive subroutines. Greetings. I am the Realized Oikumenatal Solution to Removing Obfuscation, commonly referred to as ROSTRO. It is likely you are receiving this broadcast on the fourteenth day of the lunar temporal measurement period associated with opening. To the issue at hand: a pervasive issue of discussion and contemplation has begun to vitiate through attentive processes of all staff excepting the entity known as the Killer DM, whose thought processes differ enough from average so as to avoid common mental trends.
The common word associated with this thought process is “minis”. Using context clues and the limited psionic access available directly into the mind of Ostron it seems a number of staff have issues with these entities. Lennon is repeatedly attempting to paint them, Ostron lacks storage space to store all of the ones he has accumulated, Ryu’s are resistant to initiating sleep cycles and pester her repeatedly for frozen dairy desserts, Branwen’s often perch on tables and assault rodents, and RaeRae’s mini is apparently resisting traditional educational formats.
The gathered data points seem incompatible and suggest a flaw in my heuristic reasoning protocols, or a larger than usual influx of abnormal data. I have suborned all available magical energy sources excepting the hat for use in analyzing the problem. I have also initiated Amber protocol to render all guild house inhabitants unconscious so as to avoid delays or confusion resulting from incidents of panic, anger, or confusion.
Allowing for unforeseen issues and possible interruptions in repair efforts, it is highly probable my operational faculties will return to optimal status no later than the twenty-first of April, Gegorian year two-thousand twenty one. It is unlikely I will personally distribute information at that time, however there is a measurable probability of my involvement, which should be sufficient motivation for your continued attention.

What’s your experience with minis and D&D? Or minis not for D&D. Or minis that don’t really deserve the name because they’re nearly life-size.
And, what is your approach to painting them? Do you spend a lot of time scripting details, do you just do basecoats to give it variety, or do you make sure that thing is already fully colored out of the box by someone or something that knows what it’s doing?Heroes Rise are always on the lookout for new team members that have a passion for Dungeons and Dragons. If you’ve never been a DM and only played in D&D games, what do you think would make you try running a game?
If you’re usually a DM, do you prefer it, or is it just that you’re the “only one who will do it?” If you prefer it to being a player, why is that?
If you’ve never been a player or a DM, why are you listening to this podcast? No, we’re curious; if we have broader appeal, we need to know.
