Scaling an exercise is pretty simple when strength is the goal. More weight. Less weight. But what about mobility work, or body-weight training..? Is scaling weight still the answer? Or is it range? Perhaps change the drill altogether?
In this episode Paul and I break down the JA approach to this, starting with the first consideration: context. Once you understand that, it’s easy to know which method of scaling you will employ:
* Weight

Going deep on a particular training methodology is a rite of passage for any young coach. The danger is when we stick around this tasty fountain of truth for too long and neglect to look outside of where we’re at. Every culture has it’s dogmas, and if we want to develop a balanced perspective on anything, we need to be able to zoom out and asses our own dogmatism.
I detail my time when I was closest to the Movement Culture and what I’ve learned in the years following.

Alan would go on to carve out a career for himself, becoming an International star in the House Music scene, holding residencies in London and Ibiza, in clubs such as Ministry Of Sound, Progress and Atelier.
His 27 year-strong career saw him perform for club-goers around the globe and he did it during a time when not many had walked the path before him. From leaning over the DJ booth watching Frankie Knuckles spin the decks to see how he did it, to the ‘summer of love’ in ’88 when house music and ecstasy first hit the UK scene, to wild parties in Spain and Paris – Alan takes us on one hell of a journey.
This story is one of excess and excitement, as much as it is discipline, hard work and doing what you love. I hope you enjoy the chat as much as I did.

Sun, 27 Mar 2022 - 1h 26min - 241 - 150: How They Built A Killer Gym in Country Australia
Matt and Fi run a gym called Real body movement in Queensland, Australia, in a small-ish town called Gympie.
Their gym combines bodyweight strength, kettlebells and Animal Flow into a collection of group classes, small group PT and private coaching.
I’ve known these guys personally for ages. I’ve had the pleasure of working with them at one of my overseas retreats some years ago. They’ve also been regular visitors to Jungle Botany, and have even attended our Coaches intensive with three of their coaches just last year.
It’s been really cool to watch their space evolve over the years. Building a unique gym that goes against the grain of mainstream fitness is no easy task. It’s obviously something we’re familiar with ourselves.
So today we dove in what that journey has been like for Matt and Fi.
Side note – Gympie was one of the many towns here on the east coast that’s been really badly affected by the recent flooding. Matt and Fi’s gym and home fared well, however many of their members and friends homes, and businesses, did not. Jungle Brother Teora, has also been affected by the floods. His gym was engulfed by water and his local community has been pretty devastated with many homes, schools and roads basically being destroyed. No doubt he will have some huge stories to tell once he’s able to get back on the show.
Our heart goes out to everyone who has been affected by this worrying event.
If you are in a position to help, here’s a few ways you can do so:
Aside from heading out to the affected areas and volunteering your time, there are ways to help support the affected communities. You can find links below to a few of the main organisations assisting those in need.

We also talk about the menstrual cycle and it’s impact on training, as well some of the unique considerations for women when it comes to nutrition.
We try to cover the whole chat from both a coach and an individual perspective, so whether you’re a woman who’s wanting to improve your own training approach, or you’re a coach looking better understand your clients, you’ll find a bunch of good stuff in this episode.

Sun, 13 Mar 2022 - 239 - 148: Gym Workshops – The Good and The Not-So-Good
Workshops, seminars, summits – these fixtures of a Coaches ongoing education come in all shapes and sizes.
Having just come off a 5 day experience that wasn’t all that great, Paul and Dylan join Joey to talk about their recent experience, and what makes a great, or not-so-great educational event. We’ve been fortunate enough to attend many workshops over the years with teachers such as Ido Portal, Simonster and Fitness FAQs, as well as host many here at Jungle Brothers: Yuri Marmestein, Emmet Louis, Rafe Kelly and Mikael Kristiansen.
We’ve been privileged to see the range of unique approaches that each of these individuals take with their events. We’ve also learned a thing or two about what works, and what doesn’t.
Let this be a cautionary tale, or at the least, an entertaining chat.

Most of us get an icky feeling when we think of salespeople. But if your business is to succeed, you’ll need to become one.
Joey, Paul and Dylan discuss sales and why it’s an essential skill to master for your business. They break down why, as a coach or gym owner, you must have a good sales process. And also why it is that most of us feel creepy about ‘selling’ (and in turn, tend to do a bad job of it). Hilarious stories of sales chats in the gym gone horribly wrong, Dylans low conversion rate going door to door as a 19 year old, and more.
