On the show this time, it’s a stripped down performance from post-garage rockers The Kills.

The Kills met back in the late 90’s when singer Alison Mosshart was staying in London during a tour with a previous band, and met her upstairs neighbor Jamie Hince. She loved his guitar playing and insisted that they be in a band together. That didn’t happen right away, but they kept in touch, and began writing together, and sharing 4 track demos of stuff, from when they were apart. Once her band broke up, Alison moved to London, and the band that would become The Kills formed in 2001, recording as VV and Hotel until they picked the band name. They play hard hitting heavy music, with one foot in bluesy garage rock, the other in epic cinematic noir-pop. It’s glitzy and dirty and always so dang cool. Their latest album is 'God Games' and it is available on Domino.

El Khat is the musical brainchild of Eyal el Wahab, a Yemeni man who grew up in Tel Aviv. He makes his own instruments in the tradition of impoverished people all over the world. The band is named after the drug – Khat – a stimulant chewed like tobacco across the Middle East and in Africa, and you’d better check where you are before partaking. Its legality varies by location, as does the punishment for possession! El Khat’s music is based in the traditional sounds of Yemen, but it is not frozen in amber, this is not anthropology.  This is living modern music for you to listen to now. Their latest is called Albat Alawi Op. 99 and it is available on Glitterbeat.

Drums, bass, dueling guitars, trombone, and flute constitute an impressive sonic palette, but once you throw in traditional Japanese instruments, multilingual poetic lyrics, and a punk rock heart - you'd better hold on because it's gonna be a ride! The addition of one of the world’s most charismatic front-persons, in the form of singer and fashion icon Maya Kuroki pushes the band from brilliant to downright extraordinary. She made her professional debut at thirteen, and over the years she has reinvented sitar music, playing with musicians from various genres, cultures and geographies, looking for new situations and contexts to use its inimitable voice. As she puts it, she “de-exotified” the Sitar. Flamenco, hip hop, jazz, and cinematic scores are all fair game. Her latest record, the first of a trilogy is called 'Chapter 1: FOREVER, FOR NOW.' Featuring production and collaboration from Arooj Aftab and Nils Frahm. It is available through Leiter, and on streaming services.

But - when you have a new full length album, five years in the making, it’s time to dust off the old road boots and get out there. Youth Lagoon returns, renewed and refreshed to the studio and to the road. After the project's debut in 2011, and the following 2 albums, songwriter Trevor Powers announced the end of the band after only 5 years, in 2016. He needed to move on, and released two albums under his own name. Never say never though - after surviving some severe unexpected health problems in 2021 Trevor found himself reconnecting with the parts of himself, he had left behind. Self-acceptance and love brought a new perspective, and he resurrected Youth Lagoon with the release of the latest album 'Heaven Is A Junkyard,' available on Fat Possum Records.

On the show this time it’s Palestinian-Jordanian band 47SOUL. 

47SOUL is named for the year 1947, which was the year before the Palestinian Nakba and the last year people could move freely from place to place in Bilad Al-Sham, or The Levant. The band fuses a traditional Arabic dance form - Dabke - with electronic hip hop, rock, reggae, and reggaeton to create what is known as Shamstep. This is refugee art, this is anti-border music. The band often says - “Every land is a holy land, seeking recognition.”

Their singer Ousman Ag Mosa lives, as he says, “everywhere in the desert” - because he is a nomad. Generally he walks somewhere south of Algeria and north of Mali.  The Tamasheq people want to preserve their culture, their way of life, and their land.  He sings in Tamasheq, to keep their poems, history and the music alive.  Their latest album “Tamotäit” is available on Glitterbeat Records.

These musicians have faced hardship and oppression, and it’s not over. A coup in 2020, another in 2021, the withdrawal of the French military and ongoing messy battles between various factions has made civilian life very dangerous. Their songs call for unity, and bravely run counter to the more fundamentalist groups, some of whom would ban music altogether. This record features playing from Daniel Lanois, banjo player Wes Corbett and fiddler Fats Kaplin, highlighting the band’s Americana influences. It’s called 'Amatssou' and was produced remotely by Lanois. It is available through Wedge.

NONBINARY GIRLFRIEND is the solo project of Portland singer Anaïs, a fresh start after the dissolution of their previous project Cry Babe. Cry Babe had been the inspiration for some characters in the film 'Somebody That I Used to Know' starring Alison Brie and Dave Franco, and when the two writer/actors suggested they would come to see a show, that provided Anaïs the impetus to form this new band. The record is a beautiful combination of sing-along anthems and emotional catharsis.

Their debut as NONBINARY GIRLFRIEND is 'Big And Kind,' available on Bandcamp.

She applies her breathtaking vocal technique to a refreshing blend of 300 year old Kurdish folk-songs, and her own jazz and pop influences. She is not afraid to address the suffering of the Kurdish people, or the struggles facing women - so much so that her music has at times been banned, her life has been threatened, and she has migrated as a result.

Yo-Yo Ma said “To hear Aynur’s voice is to hear the transformation of all the layers of human joy and suffering into one sound. It reaches so deep into our soul, tears into our hearts, and then we are for one moment, joined as one. It is unforgettable!”

Deerhoof has existed in its current incarnation since 2008, a four piece with Greg Saunier on drums, Satomi Matsuzaki on most vocals and bass, John Dieterich and Ed Rodriguez on guitars.  Every member can and does sing, and also write.  The original version of the band started in 1994 in San Francisco! He performed at the World Cup alongside Alicia Keys and Shakira. He’s clearly earned the right to be reviewed without mention of his father. But - he’s got the maturity to enjoy his connection to family and history. His latest album is named “Ali.” It’s another collaboration - this time with Texan psych-rock meets hip-hop trio Khruangbin - all covers of songs by his Dad. It’s available on Dead Oceans.

It’s impossible to overstate the importance of this band - they originate a sound. They are pioneers of psychedelic cumbia and all cumbia music has changed - or more properly all music has changed because of them. The lineup has also changed, but the group is still going. Like a family, they straddle generations. There are more than 30 albums available on vinyl through Infopesa Records, and on streaming services.

They are heavier than the latter, though equally saturnine. They have not released an album or really been performing live in over 12 years, but now that they are playing again - they rocked the 2023 Vive Latino festival - we are holding out hope for a new record. Their most recent full-length is 'Caballeros del Albedrío' available on Terrícolas Imbéciles Records and Bandcamp. They perform in masks - in accordance with the motto - “No importa tu cara, importas tú.” It’s not your face that’s important - it’s you.

Chicago’s KAINA makes dreamy indie R&B songs that serve as affirmations of joy for the Guatamalen-Venezuelan artist. She released her impressive sophomore record It Was a Home back in March, featuring collaborations with Helado Negro, Sleater-Kinney, and Sen Morimoto. She stopped by KEXP over the summer to play a gorgeous set of songs off the record and spoke with Gabriel Teodros about coming up in Chicago’s youth music programs, the role family plays in her new record, and building a home.

Chicago’s KAINA makes dreamy indie R&B songs that serve as affirmations of joy for the Guatamalen-Venezuelan artist. She released her impressive sophomore record It Was a Home back in March, featuring collaborations with Helado Negro, Sleater-Kinney, and Sen Morimoto. She stopped by KEXP over the summer to play a gorgeous set of songs off the record and spoke with Gabriel Teodros about coming up in Chicago’s youth music programs, the role family plays in her new record, and building a home.

As an extra gift, we include a snippet from Sen Morimoto’s KEXP in-studio session from last year featuring KAINA on backing vocals.

On the show this time, it's the avant songwriting of cellist Mabe Fratti. Mabe Fratti is a composer and cellist, born in Guatemala and now living in Mexico City. She is a rare bird - a cello player who also sings, who actually sings while playing the cello.  Her music is harmonically complex, rhythmically intrepid, and doesn’t shy away from dissonance. Against this backdrop she creates out of the ordinary melody - often surprisingly catchy.  She creates honestly, and - very closely with her chosen family of musicians. She would say they work “softly” with lots of room for improvisation and the musical personality of each player, of each friend. Her latest 'Se Ve Desde Aqui' is available on Unheard of Hope records.

They understand that in times when the patriarchal and fascist elements of society rise, it's essential that someone, something, somewhere - rises in opposition. To critique.  To mock. They use exaggerated characters that say outrageous things about the ridiculous and absurd things occurring in this time.  In this way they comment on masculinity, shootings, drug abuse and ADD, crime, the failures of “evolution”, monkeys of course, and for some reason - Shrimp. Their latest, 'Cave World,' is available on Year 0001.

Clinton Fearon is the real deal, an all-killer no-filler Jamaican reggae legend. He built his first guitar himself, at the age of 10, out of a single slab of wood, after seeing a life changing show - the Skatalites live in Kingston. He’s been living in Seattle part time since the late 80’s. He released an EP with his group The Defenders in 1989. Since then, with the Boogie Brown Band and as a solo artist, he’s put out a staggering 14 albums - culminating in his latest "Breaking News” available on the French label Baco Records.

Sofi Tukker is a duo - Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern. They met at an event - he was DJing, she was singing Bossa Nova. Tucker asked if he could remix a song, and they’ve been working together ever since. While they were both attending Brown, Tucker did a DJ set opening for the electro-funk-disco duo The Knocks. They encouraged him and Sophie to move to New York to make music. Good move. Their very first EP 'Soft Animals' opens with the song “Drinkee” which was eventually nominated for a Grammy. Their latest album 'WET TENNIS' (which stands for “When Everyone Tries To Evolve, Nothing Negative Is Safe”) is available on Ultra Music.

On the show this time it’s the Congolese-Canadian electro-pop of Pierre Kwenders

Pierre Kwenders was born in 1985 in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In his teens he emigrated to Canada with his mother. Despite a love for music, It wasn’t until he was coerced into auditioning for a church choir that he really started singing, but once he did, it was apparent to everyone that he should KEEP SINGING.  His latest album “José Louis And The Paradox Of Love” (which features the choir he started out with!) won the Polaris Music prize in 2022.
