Restorative circles can be a powerful tool for setting classroom norms, building community, addressing behaviors that are impeding teaching and learning or a way to gather feedback about how students are feeling about learning. In this episode of the Language Lounge, guest Mike Farkas discusses the importance of restorative circles in his teaching and gives tips on how you can get started.

Michael Farkas is a Spanish teacher at Canton High School in Canton, MA. Since 2019, Mike has been a member of the MAFLA Board of Directors. Most recently during his tenure, Mike has co-designed and co-implemented an additional MAFLA offering called MAFLA Meets, which aims to connect MAFLA members and create a social space for fellow world language educators to connect and collaborate. In addition, Mike is an ACTFL LILL (Leadership Initiative for Language Learning) Advocate from Cohort 4. Mike has presented on topics pertaining to social-emotional learning, unit design, and personalized learning in the WL classroom at MAFLA, NHWALT, and ACTFL. Mike is passionate about creating a classroom environment where all learners feel a sense of belonging, empowerment, and a capacity to communicate with others in Spanish.

As French teachers everywhere are gearing up for French week (November 1-8) join guest Terri Hammatt as she talks about the myriad of ways that French teachers can promote their programs and stay connected to the Francophone world, even if they are a department of one.

Terri was a French and French immersion teacher for 20 years in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She then served as supervisor of world languages and immersion programs at the Louisiana Department of Education, supporting Louisiana teachers and numerous international teachers who come to Louisiana to teach their own languages. In addition, Terri currently serves on the CODOFIL board (CODOFIL--the state agency responsible for the ongoing development of French), LFLTA, and the Louisiana Consortium of Immersion Schools. Terri has worked hand-in-hand with France’s Education Nationale and the Ministère des affaires étrangères, Wallonie-Bruxelles (the French-speaking Community of Belgium); le Centre de la francophonie des Amériques and numerous entities as partners to enhance la francophonie internationale. His district was awarded Model School status for New Jersey from 2005-2014. In addition, Matt was honored to receive the 2014 FLENJ Teacher Award, and the 2014 New Jersey Cooperating Teacher Award. Matt currently teaches Spanish I- In Class Resource at Manalapan High School and after school at the RAISE Academy, his district's alternative high school for students temporarily expelled. His school honored him as Teacher of the Year in 2020.

Matt believes student centered learning and giving students agency to their understanding will motivate them to love of languages, understand the perspectives of other cultures, and be proud of who they are as learners and people. He absolutely LOVES collaborating and sharing ideas with educators, talking about bringing out the best in students and using the power of their personalities. Input, TPR, putting students in the driver's seat, spontaneous speech, building a sense of belonging in the classroom, and finding the most efficient ways to understand and reach students are big pieces of his approach to instruction.

She is a frequent presenter at world language conferences at the state, regional, and national levels and has received "Top 10" and "Best of..." accolades for her work there. She is a renewed National Board Certified Teacher and in 2020 was awarded the Jenrette Award for Teaching Excellence & Leadership by her school community. She was named the K12 North Carolina World Languages Teacher of the Year in 2022. When not at school she loves to volunteer and go on amazing adventures with friends, family, and her best pup, Addy.

I was born and raised in Argentina. I loved studying English as a Foreign Language as a kid. I loved it so much that I decided to get my Bachelor's Degree in that subject. I did a post-graduate specialization in English Literature. I will always be grateful to my professors in Argentina. Their brilliance, deep knowledge of Language Acquisition and mentorship guide me until today.

Later on, I came to work in the US, in New Jersey. We decided to Texas and I did my Master of Arts in Spanish Literature and Linguistics. I have been working in Plano ISD for 16 years. I have taught all the levels of Spanish. I have given many professional development trainings. I have been very involved with the Curriculum Development team. I have met and worked with awesome teachers and leaders. The most important and impactful part of my job: my students, their love for learning my language and culture.

Marnina Falk taught Spanish for 9 years at Foreign Language Immersion and Culture Studies, a Detroit Public School. In Detroit, she helped write the Spanish I and II curriculum. She also led training for the district language department. Prior to Detroit public schools, she taught English in Costa Rica for 2 years, where she developed English programs for children and adults. She also discovered her passion for Latin dance.

In 2018, Marnina participated in a Fulbright Hays summer seminar in Brazil, where she returned as a Language Curriculum Coordinator for another cohort in 2022. In 2019, Marnina was a Fund for Teachers Fellow in Cuba. Expanding on her experiences in Costa Rica, Brazil, and Cuba, she has created materials about Afro-Latin culture and heritage. She has also continued to practice Spanish and study Brazilian Portuguese whenever possible.

Trisha J.C-McMurray is a first generation American of Vincentian and Panamanian heritage. Her father is from the British West Indian island of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Her mother is from Panamá. Currently, she teaches first through fourth grade Spanish but has taught middle and high school Spanish and ESL. Trisha was a Teacher of the Year for Berlitz where she worked as a Spanish and English instructor. Trisha loves Spanish language and culture and has a passion to see that first generation Americans of immigrant parents value learning about and maintaining their heritage, language and culture while at the same time appreciating their multicultural identity.

Trisha is very passionate teacher who loves teaching Spanish and exposing her students to the diversity of Latino people and culture as well as the British Caribbean and diverse cultures of the world. She earned her BA in Spanish from Seton Hall University and did a study abroad in Salamanca, Spain at La universidad de Pontificia. She earned her master's degree in Latin American and Caribbean Studies from NYU (New York University) where she specialized in the collective identities of the British West Indies as well as the Spanish-speaking world and cultural pluralism looking specifically at Afro/Caribbean Latino, Chinese Latino, Indo-Caribbean, Chinese West Indians as well as white West Indians.

What Steven Lopez likes about choice and student lead activities is that it allows his students to bring their interests, hobbies, abilities and passions into the classroom and the community. Steven walks us through what he does and shares examples of several units. (See the show notes) While giving choice to students can seem overwhelming, Steven makes it manageable and, bonus points, more interesting to grade.

Bio

I have been teaching Spanish in New York for 14 years. I grew up in NYC and studied at University at Albany (BA in Spanish, MS in Secondary Education) and Middlebury College (MA in Spanish). I have traveled and lived through Spain and Latin America and can also can communicate in Brazilian Portuguese and French (both at the intermediate level). I try to live a very healthy and active lifestyle and have also worked as a fitness instructor for over 11 years. In my free time I often go to the theater and wonderful museums in NYC

Joseph Dunn is well known in regional, national, and international francophone circles. He has presented in English and French at conferences and political and economic trade missions in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, and Europe. He is often featured in Francophone print and broadcast media and documentaries as a leader in the French and Creole language movements in Louisiana. He is regularly quoted in academic journals and publications and is known as an outspoken advocate for the development of educational, professional and economic opportunities for these heritage language communities.  

After three years as Executive Director of the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana (CODOFIL), he began work as an independent tourism & cultural entrepreneur. He has held positions at the Consulate General of France in New Orleans; the Office of the Lieutenant Governor; the Louisiana Office of Cultural Development; the Louisiana Travel Promotion Association; Laura: A Creole Plantation; and the Louisiana Office of Tourism. 

Internationally, Joseph has twice worked as a product development and interpretation consultant with Parks Canada. He participated in the drafting of the dossier that led to Louisiana’s acceptance as an observer member of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, the second-largest international body of nations and regions after the United Nations. Joseph’s primary role today is to oversee the communications, public relations and marketing efforts at Laura: Louisiana's Creole Heritage Site, highlighting the unique history and reality of Louisiana’s diverse mosaic of French and Creole-speaking populations.

Michelle Fournier studied French language and literature at Smith College and spent her junior year abroad in Paris. Following graduation, she was an assistante d’anglais in Clermont-Ferrand, France. She taught high school for 22 years and now teaches at Falmouth Middle School in Falmouth, Maine. She is a teacher leader in the state of Maine for many years, helping to bring proficiency-based teaching to classrooms throughout the state. She is a member of the Alliance Française du Maine, AATF-Maine, and is secretary of EMME (Educators for a Multilingual Maine). She was a Fulbright Exchange teacher in Bayeux, France in 2006-2007. Michelle and Stephanie co-founded Manie Musicale in 2017. Michelle is married and has two adult children, a dog, and a granddog. When not working on Manie, she enjoys making homemade jam, macarons, and other tasty treats. She practices yoga and meditation and loves to read, travel, and play cards with her husband.

Building IPA's is super hard -  

IPAs are hard for teachers and students too - but once students get the hang of it they can show so much more language.  

Teachers- open ended tasks that don't have "correct" answers 

Look at the IPA as a demonstration or celebration of what they can do  

How can teachers lighten their load 

Limit the amount of tasks that you grade - but you don't need to grade all the tasks-  

What do I need to assess the most?  

Cut it down to 1 or 2 modes per assessment  

Look at different tasks for each class 

What does your district require?  You're not going to get paid more for grading more… 

Cheating is a huge issue -  

Our assessments are not the end of the world- it's okay not to put everything in gradebook 

At the end of the unit it is summative - so there's not as much feedback 

Taking away the reason to cheat - don't grade the interpretive task  

Quick way to provide rubric - not error correction-  

Focus on proficiency driven comment - one thing they did well- and something to work on  

You don't have to grade everything 

A good rubric 

Committing to actually grading things - create an environment that allows you to focus and get it done - then it's not hanging over your head anymore.  

Attitude adjustment - stopped talking about tests- stopped talking about anticipating  tests-  

Don't build it up into a big thing - started offering and encouraging retakes - 

This is you demonstrating your learning today-  why can't everyone get a good grade - especially 

Be intentional about your goal - what it is you need to see

Stephanie Carbonneau loves to learn and that's evident in her eclectic approach to teaching.  As the school year gets started, she's been thinking about how she can rely on her strengths so she can focus on learning and growing her teaching. She states, "There is no mold for a perfect teacher. Imposter Syndrome is REAL. Teacher should do more of what they are good at and less of what they are not." Stephanie also talks about her goal for this year: taking time off of presenting in order to focus on learning.  As a result, she is growing as a teacher and accepting only those activities that are authentically her.

Bio: Jenny Delfini has been a French and Spanish teacher for twenty years. For the last fifteen, she has been teaching languages to children in the elementary schools; she works with classroom teachers, special area teachers, and other language teachers to create cross-curricular units that are dynamic and that promote world languages. She is currently the president of NYSAFLT, her state's language teacher organization. 

In this episode Michelle talks with Denise Wagstaff, 20-year veteran French teacher about her journey to teaching for proficiency – what she has learned and is still learning about her students, her profession and herself.  We talk about everything from setting realistic expectations for student language learning to conversations about the role of grammar to Denise’s recent deeper dive into grading practices. 

Denise Wagstaff has been a teacher for over 20 years and has spent almost her entire career at Melrose High School (MA) teaching French and occasionally Spanish.  Her professional interests include teaching for proficiency, using technology in the classroom, grading and feedback practices & UDL.  A Massachusetts native, Denise also enjoys travel, watching professional tennis and is always ready to enjoy a cup of coffee or an ice cream.
