Dr. Christian Hageseth is an 82-year-old retired psychiatrist. His first symptoms of PD started 18 years ago, yet he only started taking L-Dopa 2 ½ years ago. He credits his success in slowing PD—almost to a halt—to his attitude, exercise, and practicing yoga. He directed his local PD support group from 2012 to 2019. During that time, the numbers of attendees went from thirteen to more than one hundred every month.  Today he feels it is critically important for PWPs to avoid spending their time looking for for the next new drug to show up. Instead, he says to live life to its fullest. He reminds us that PD does not appreciably shorten the life span of PWPs. And he also reminds us that medications such as L-dopa do not increase longevity. He has always viewed PD as a challenge, not a curse.

Stochastic Resonance Therapy (SRT) was born in the German city of Frankfurt  when Dietmar Schmidtbleicher developed a new training device for Olympic athletes. Since then, the whole-body vibration device he developed has been studied and shown to be effective in the treatment of Parkinson's motor symptoms. Willem Visser is a craniosacral therapist from the Netherlands, currently living in Portland, OR, USA. Dr. Hageseth dates his first non-motor symptoms to 2004 when his sense of smell disappeared. In 2008 he developed severe constipation which he has had ever since. In 2011 he saw the emergence of a tremor in his right hand which progressed over the following year to involve his entire right side. It went on to include stooped posture, shuffling gait, and problems with balance. A neurologist confirmed his diagnosis in 2012. He tried three different medications over the next four months but discontinued each one due to side effects or lack of efficacy. His neurologist gave him one piece of advice: EXERCISE, EXERCISE, EXERCISE. A year later many of his symptoms had regressed. He attributed his improvement to the intensity of his exercise and taking up yoga. He established his first website: Sweating Out Parkinson’s Disease. He intended to encourage other PWPs to follow his example. By 2014 he was doing so well that he had a DAT scan to confirm the diagnosis of PD. It was positive. Over the last year and a half, he explored why more people aren’t doing better with PD. It was then that he started to examine how the mind may influence the course of PD. Exercise is the key to living a full life with PD, But if the mind does not believe the degree of improvement that exercise can achieve. Then improvement will only go so far. Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a systemic disease with motor and non-motor deficits. In July 2011, we treated a 47-year-old man affected by spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2). In this patient, fatigue as well as motor symptoms improved after parenteral high doses of thiamine (also this was our proprietary research). Therefore, we formulated the hypothesis that in some inherited and degenerative diseases of the nervous system, the pathogenesis of the symptoms could be linked to a focal thiamine deficiency due to a dysfunction of the circulation of thiamine in the intracellular space or to structural enzymatic abnormalities. We thought that this dysfunction could be responsive to high-dose thiamine. Furthermore, PD has also been related to mutations associated with SCA2. Since appearing on this show last fall, Dr. Hageseth has consulted with scores of what he calls Parkinson’s People (PPs).  PPs consist of Person’s with Parkinson’s (PwPs), caregivers, interested family and many different professionals. Stress and trauma lurk behind most diseases, including Parkinson’s. Dr. Christian Hageseth, a 75-year-old retired psychiatrist has had PD for 5 ½ years. The limbic system is a complex set of structures in the mid brain that includes the hypothalamus, hippocampus, amygdala and cingulate cortex.It has been described as the “feeling and reacting brain”. It is responsible for the formation of memories and is constantly determining our level of safety. The Limbic System assigns emotional significance to everything we smell, see, hear, feel, and taste. It is known as the seat of social and emotional intelligence and is the brain’s anxiety “switch”. It is closely integrated with the immune system, the endocrine system and the autonomic nervous system. When not functioning properly due to injury or impairment, the limbic system becomes hypersensitive and begins to react to stimuli that it would usually disregard as not representing a danger to the body. This results in inappropriate activation of the immune, endocrine and autonomic nervous systems that can lead to varied and seemingly unconnected symptoms. The fine and gross motor controls of the hands help to grow the brain.  This brain growth occurs specifically on the surface of the brain (cerebral cortex) as well as certain anatomical areas of the hippocampi structures, the corpus collosum and the cerebellum.  Science has proven that the growth of myelin occurs with improved procedural memories.  When the myelin thickens on the axon sheaths, chemical changes occur and the master steroid called Pregnenolone is produced.  This is part of the Steroidogenesis process that helps to maintain homeostasis within the brain.  The brain has the ability to create new neurons in a process called Neurogenesis. The final (unplanned) chapter deals with his diagnosis of Parkinson’s approximately two years ago and the changes in priorities and the new life lessons he has learned from it. He discusses the faith, the importance of family and friends and the open-mindedness that is necessary to continue to lead a meaningful, productive life.  He also tells people of the importance of exercise to both healthy individuals and more importantly those with some type of an affliction.

Richard Melvin discusses his accidental discovery of having Parkinson's disease and how his father's experience with standard Parkinson's medications influenced his decision to treat the disease with (alternative) nutritional supplementation.
