Debbie Alamrew is a poet, writer and spoken word performer of Ethiopian descent. She has been writing poetry since the tender age of nine and it was through her words that she discovered the power of her voice. She is also a Communications expert and works with the respected Los Angeles events company Amplify Africa.
Debbie was born in London, and spent her childhood living between England and Nigeria, spending every summer vacation in Ethiopia. At an early age she was exposed to different cultures and lifestyles which played an integral part in shaping her worldview. She credits her ability to relate so strongly with people from all walks of life to her unique upbringing.
She was a student at the Sylvia Young Theatre School, where notable alumni include Amy Winehouse, Emma Bunton, Leona Lewis and many more. She also excelled at LAMDA (London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art) while in high school. She is a graduate of the University of North Texas and recipient of a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Maine School of Law.

Filmmaker David E. Valdez joins Ms. Uduak, host of The Africa Music Law Show, on the 154th episode for a 1:1 interview to discuss his latest project Los Changuitos Feos aka “The Ugly Little Monkeys.” It’s a story about how seven Mexican boys in Tucson, Arizona formed a band that helped take and elevate Mariachi music to a global status.

With a career spanning over 30 years in the field of television and film production, Mr. Valdez’s experience includes cinematography, writing, directing as well as all aspects of production, from creative concept through finished product. As an award-winning short film director/producer/writer, his first short film, “Sin Vergüenza” has been shown at several film festivals throughout the US and Mexico. With powerful vocals that makes heads turn, Adebiyi Oguntimilehin aka Leo Wonder was clearly born a superstar. Hailing from Osun state, (located in Southwestern Nigeria aka the “state of the living spring”), the multi-talented singer, songwriter, and dancer made his foray into music through his local church where he served as a choirmaster and sang lead, alto, tenor, including handling all backup vocals. He subsequently established a band, the Musketeers, which included the now popularly singer Morachi and performed under the stage name B-Flow.

Besides his work in the media, Sheifunmi is passionate about mental health and advocates for the cause through his non-profit, LPM Foundation. He was one of the first few showbiz personalities in Africa to publicly speak out about their lived experience with mental health.

A graduate of the Yale Law School and a U.S Marine veteran, Professor Kevin J. Greene is the John J. Schumacher Chair Professor at Southwestern Law School in Los Angeles, California, where he teaches Contracts, Copyright Law and Entertainment Law.
Professor Greene’s award-winning scholarship explores copyright, trademark and publicity rights issues, and the impact of intellectual property law on African-American creativity.
Professor Greene practiced law in New York at the premier firm of Cravath, Swaine & Moore, representing companies such as Time Warner/HBO, and at a top New York entertainment law boutique firm, where his clients included film production companies, film director Spike Lee, and music artists including Harry Connick, Jr., Bobby Brown, and the seminal rap group Public Enemy.
As an expert witness-consultant in copyright and IP cases, Greene worked with funk music legend George Clinton in a landmark copyright case in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. In 2020, Professor Greene was the lead IP expert in a landmark $9.5 million jury trial on contracts and right of publicity issues.
In 2016, the Intellectual Property Institute of the State Bar of California selected Professor Greene for its highest honor, the Vanguard Award in the category of Academics. In 2018, Professor Greene was elected as a member of the American Bar Foundation (“ABF).
In 2020, Professor Greene was selected by the National Bar Association as one of the top 100 African-American attorneys in California. Also, in 2020, Professor Greene was selected as the Honorary Intellectual Property Law Advisor, and a Fellow (Honors) of the United Sigma Intelligence Association, an international think tank.

THO VINH BANH
Tho Vinh Banh is a Special Counsel for Strategic Partnerships and Community Engagement at Disability Rights California (DRC). In partnership with the Executive Director, she manages strategies for engagement to support DRC’s community goals and represents DRC in strategic partnerships with disability leaders and organizations, disability community members, civil rights leaders, and organizations.
Prior to this current position, Tho Vinh was a Supervising Attorney of the Multicultural Affairs (MCA) Outreach Unit. In this capacity, she oversaw the organization’s outreach efforts to ensure people with disabilities from underserved and language distinct communities know about their rights and receive equitable services and supports.
She’s also engaged in legal and systems to change advocacy through direct representation, legislation, and policy work so that individuals with disabilities, including individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD), receive the services and supports that they need.
As a refugee from Viet Nam and a person with a visual disability, Tho Vinh lives at and cares about the intersection of race, disability, gender, language, and culture, among others, and how it shapes and impacts people’s lives and opportunities.

 Funke Adeoye is a Legal Practitioner, a human rights defender, and Social Justice Advocate with a particular interest in Human Rights, Inclusion, and Sustainable Development. A graduate of law from the University of Benin and called to bar in 2013, Funke has successfully represented several indigent inmates pro bono from the lowest courts to the Appellate Courts. Funke is the Founder and Executive Director of Hope behind Bars Africa, an organization that leverages technology to provide access to justice to indigent and marginalized inmates whilst empowering them for re-integration back to society to avoid recidivism. Her organization has provided access to justice to 67 pretrial detainees within 2 years of commencement of their work. Her organization further works with female prisoners to produce items that are sold outside prison whilst the inmates get paid for their services. In September 2020, they partnered with the German Embassy to make reusable face masks that were distributed to underserved communities to combat COVID -19. 
Funke Adeoye further extends her defense skills as one of the pro bono lawyers for the US-sponsored Reform Pre-Trial Detention in Nigeria Project, a platform that also allows her to take up capital cases for indigent inmates, mentor law students and help shape the criminal justice space in Nigeria for good. 
OSAI OJIGHO
Ms. Osai Ojigho is a lawyer, gender equality advocate, and human rights expert with a special interest in the African Human Rights system. Currently, the Country Director of Amnesty International Nigeria. Prior to joining Amnesty International, she served in various roles with Oxfam including as interim Pan Africa Director of Oxfam GB’s Pan African Programme. She was the Coalition Coordinator for the SOTU (State of the Union) Coalition, a human rights observer to the African Union Mission to Mali, and the Sahel, and Deputy Executive Director of Alliances for Africa. She is well traveled and widely published, contributing to various publications including the Commonwealth Law Journal, The AU ECHO (Newsletter of the African Union Commission), ThisDay Newspapers, The East African and Agenda. She is a member of the Association of Women in Development (AWID), the West African Women Elections Observation (WAWEO) team, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and a life member of the Pan African Lawyers Union (PALU). She is also a consulting editor with Open Global Rights and a mentor to Mandela Washington Fellows. She sits on the Global Advisory Council of Institute For African Women In Law (IAWL). A few months ago, the African Diaspora’s business and entertainment communities were rocked when Black women at Okay Africa and Essence Magazine accused the CEOs, Abiola Oke and Richelieu Dennis, respectively, of inappropriate behavior, and labor and employment law violations including sexual harassment.
The allegations were extensive and went viral, forcing both CEOs to resign from their positions. Since then, in recent times, Dennis claims that the independent law firms hired by Essence Magazine to investigate the allegations, have exonerated him, and found no merits to the harassment claims. Notwithstanding his claim, the alleged victims are yet to recant their stories against both executives.

Last month, the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) announced they were bringing a pro league to Africa, The Basketball African League. According to the duo, the initial plan is for a 12-team league from across the continent to begin playing in January 2020. To create awareness for the new league, the NBA enlisted some of Africa’s top musicians through a partnership with Universal Music Group Brands. The partnership saw the NBA invite and host Nigeria’s Ycee, South Africa’s Cassper Nyovest, Sho Madjoze, Moozlie, and Tanzania’s Vanessa Mdee at the NBA All-Star weekend in Charlotte, North Carolina, held last month.

Beverley Agbakoba-Onyejianya is a Lawyer and Entrepreneur. She is an accredited mediator with the Lagos Multi-Door Court annexed to Nigeria’s High Court. She has over twelve years of professional experience in the banking and capital markets sectors in the United Kingdom and Nigeria. Her broad experience in the compliance industry covers investment banking, brokerage, and fund management sectors. She is currently Head of the Sports, Entertainment and Tech practice at Olisa Agbakoba Legal. She is a member of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group sports thematic industry group on alternative dispute resolution and youth policy development. Her interest in sports and youth development led her to establish the Little Tigers Football Club in 2012, Little Tigers Football Foundation in 2017 and Tiger Active Sports Centre in 2018. She is a sports law writer and facilitator and regularly gives lectures and raises awareness on the development of sports law as an emerging practice area in Nigeria.
Ojonoka Agudah, an intellectual property lawyer in sports and entertainment is passionate about sports, music and image rights. A graduate of law from the University of Lagos called to the Nigerian Bar in 2013, she obtained her postgraduate degree in International Intellectual Property law and commercial practice from Swansea University, where she received the prestigious IP Wales Prize.
She is an in house legal counsel at Integral, a leading Nigerian sports sponsorship, marketing, hospitality and athlete management agency. Her legal experience in sports includes sponsorship, licensing, merchandising, image rights, athlete management and more recently, a focus on legal issues in the Football industry. Ojonoka also plays an important role in managing sponsorship of prestigious sports properties including the Nigeria Olympic Committee and Nigeria Super Falcons. With Integral as the exclusive rights holder in Nigeria, she is currently managing the sales operation of FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019™ Official Hospitality Programme in Nigeria.
