Today, John and I sit down to discuss “how to love the church.” This is a casual conversation examining Paul’s words in 1 Timothy 3:14-16 and we aimed at remaining positive and Biblical and hopeful but when we went to edit, I noticed a subtle cynicism creeping into our conversation. Even though John and I both have had positive experiences in the church and believe in the work of the local church in our world, we can’t turn a blind eye to the scandals and the difficulties. So, we ended our conversation by reflecting on the words of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the German Theologian Pastor Spy during World War 2 and how he would advise us on how to love the church in 2022. And whatever we say about loving the church, the Gospel, the good news, is that Jesus still loves the church. He loves the church in its many forms and imperfections. If you have ever read Acts 2, you know right away that something important is happening. But there is also some strange descriptions of the moment when the Holy Spirit was sent by Jesus. What is Pentecost about and how do we make sense of Acts 2 in light of our Christian experience today? What about speaking in tongues? Is it for today? How is it supposed to be practiced in a local church? I am joined today by Dr. Holly Beers, New Testament Professor of Theology at Westmont College. Dr. Beers graduated from North Central University in Minneapolis, earned a Master of Arts in Theological Studies at Bethel Seminary in St. Paul, and completed her doctorate at the London School of Theology in England. She specializes in Luke-Acts, the use of the Old Testament in the New Testament, philosophical hermeneutics, and second temple Judaism. Her publications include a monograph, “The Followers of Jesus as the Servant: Luke’s Model from Isaiah for the Disciples in Luke-Acts.” She also writes Greek devotionals for pastors and explores the intersection of the daily lives of women in the Roman Empire during the first century and the ecclesiology of the New Testament church.
