The Apostle Paul said in Philippines 4:8-9 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. It was C.S. Its our monthly Audience Question and Answer Episode!   Today’s question comes from one of our amazing listeners Kelsey who asked us, “Can God redeem everything in our world this side of Heaven?”  In other words, can any sin, any issue be healed and redeemed right now before Jesus returns and establishes the Kingdom of God.”  This is a great question because we are seeing a shift in our the US from having a society based on Judeo-Christian values - like the ten commandments - to a more pluralistic society where morality is defined by each individual person.  So we see people making decisions around sexuality, gender, the definition of a family, what are proper business ethics, and individual respect of others changing. Today, John and I sit down to discuss “how to love the church.”  This is a casual conversation examining Paul’s words in 1 Timothy 3:14-16 and we aimed at remaining positive and Biblical and hopeful but when we went to edit, I noticed a subtle cynicism creeping into our conversation.  Even though John and I both have had positive experiences in the church and believe in the work of the local church in our world, we can’t turn a blind eye to the scandals and the difficulties.  So, we ended our conversation by reflecting on the words of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the German Theologian Pastor Spy during World War 2 and how he would advise us on how to love the church in 2022. And whatever we say about loving the church, the Gospel, the good news, is that Jesus still loves the church. In Season 3 we want to answer the question “How to become a resilient disciple of Jesus?”   Our definition of a resilient disciple is, “Someone who effectively becomes more like Jesus in character and lifestyle, does the stuff Jesus did in ministry despite living within and engaging a secular culture that opposes Jesus and his way of life.” We use the word resilience because resilience really means the ability to adapt and respond to set-backs.  And as followers of Jesus, we must be resilient now more than ever and adapt in a culture and world that has become so opposed to Jesus and truth.  But why?  Why do we need to become a resilient disciples? We live in a world of misinformation.  Have you ever heard something that sounded true but you weren’t sure if it was?  How do you determine and test if something is true? Jesus said in John 8:32  Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. Truth can set us free.  The opposite of truth is lies.  Lies don’t let us live the way we were fully meant to by God. If you have ever read Acts 2, you know right away that something important is happening.  But there is also some strange descriptions of the moment when the Holy Spirit was sent by Jesus.  What is Pentecost about and how do we make sense of Acts 2 in light of our Christian experience today?  What about speaking in tongues? Is it for today?  How is it supposed to be practiced in a local church?   I am joined today by Dr. Holly Beers, New Testament Professor of Theology at Westmont College.  Dr. Beers graduated from North Central University in Minneapolis, earned a Master of Arts in Theological Studies at Bethel Seminary in St. Paul, and completed her doctorate at the London School of Theology in England. She specializes in Luke-Acts, the use of the Old Testament in the New Testament, philosophical hermeneutics, and second temple Judaism. Her publications include a monograph, “The Followers of Jesus as the Servant: Luke’s Model from Isaiah for the Disciples in Luke-Acts.” She also writes Greek devotionals for pastors and explores the intersection of the daily lives of women in the Roman Empire during the first century and the ecclesiology of the New Testament church.
