How to do it so you don’t look so suspicious! But remember, a handicap does not reflect your average score over par. It reflects your possible BEST score! The USGA has found that if a player plays 50 rounds in a year, he will average scoring what his handicap would dictate only once. That’s right! Only once in 50 rounds. Ultimately, the choice of grass on a golf course depends on factors such as climate, maintenance resources, and golfer preferences. By carefully selecting and maintaining the appropriate grass types, golf course superintendents aim to provide players with a visually appealing and enjoyable playing experience, while also ensuring the long-term health and sustainability of the course.

No actually, we are NOT crazy! A fairway wood or a Hybrid club, with the weight at the bottom and large sole plate, are perfect for scraping along the sand and getting your ball out and advanced from a fairway bunker. This week Jeff Smith, one of Golf Magazines Top 100 Teachers, explains how when and how to use a fairway wood or a Hybrid club out of a fairway bunker. He also explains how to properly use the Hybrid clubs and fairway woods from both the rough and the fairway. He explains proper setup, ball position, club position and all the elements to successfully get your ball further down the fairway. Here’s a hint: the club position for his Hybrid clubs is very similar to the position for his six iron (just a smidge forward of center. Of course these suggestions’ come with the same caveat as all our weekly suggestions: practice the shots to get comfortable with how they work best for you.

Jeff Smith, one of Golf Magazine’s Top 100 teachers, gives you 2 shots to use around the greens today. They are both almost magic when it comes to improving your short game. First is the Hinge & Thump shot, And the second he calls the Firm Handed Scrape. Both of these shots describe the motion used in executing them and both can be used with many different clubs for many different scenarios. But what is for sure is that once you have both of these shots in your arsenal your short game will improve seriously and quickly.

How long does it take for golf clubs to wear out? How can you tell if your clubs are worn out? This week Jeff Smith, a Golf Magazine Top 100 teacher and co-host of Those Weekend Golf Guys show offers some invaluable advice: Play Within Yourself. In short, don’t do more than your abilities, your body, and your equipment can do. For instance, if you are taking your second shot into a par 4 hole with something higher than a 7,8,9, or wedge, you need to move up a tee or two. Don’t let your ego ruin the fun of golf by frustrating you because you are doing stuff you are not capable of doing. Those weekend Golf Guys are here this week with their semi-regular reminder that there is no “right” or “wrong” way to play golf. There are ways to swing the club that are not compatible with your body’s motion. There are ways to move that might be inhibited by your flexibility, or lack thereof. But keep in mind there are myriad ways to be successful at this game. Some have short backswings (like Jon Rahm). Others have long backswings (like Justin Thomas). Jeff Smith, one of Golf Magazines Top 100 Teachers, also describes the transition; that short period of time when the backswing stops and the downswing begins. Get this right for you and your game will improve noticeably. This is one of those programs where a simple listen (OK. Maybe take some notes too) will make you a much better golfer the very next time you head out to the course.

The USGA and The R7A are proposing a new rule that will “Roll Back” the golf ball. They think the ball is too hot and is making some of the golf courses the PGA Tour plays on obsolete. Well, Jeff Smith and John Ashton think that would be a stupid thing for the USGA and the R&A to do and mince no words in a scathing attack on the idea on this week’s Those Weekend Golf Guys Show. As Jeff says, “since you are so good, we have to penalize you”. There is a perfect answer to this problem, and its not to “roll back” the golf ball so it doesn’t fly as far. It sounds like the proposal would reduce a 300 yard drive by about 15 yards. The answer is “agronomy”. Plant some trees, build some bunkers, keep the rough a bit rougher, narrow the fairways. There are lots of things to do to cut back the distance of the world’s “Elite Golfers” without ruining the golf experience for the rest of us.

OK, maybe 107 reasons is a bi9t of an exaggeration. But we do have some great reasons why more women need to play golf and a bunch of ideas on how to make it easy for them to get started with the game. Our guest is Janet Miller, President of the Louisville Chapter of the LPGA Amateur group, formerly know as the EWGA. This week on Those Weekend Golf Guys you will hear three great ways to increase your swing speed. And we all know that sing speed is the best way to assure longer drives and better ball flight. Jeff Smith, one of Golf Magazine’s Top100 Teachers, runs down his 3 techniques to speed up your swing speed. The first way is to make sure your grip is not too tight on the club. He says the grip should be “soft” but not “loose”. Because when your grip Is too tight your rms and wrists do not function correctly and slow down your swing. The second technique to speed up your swing is to learn how to properly use your legs to “push off” the ground. Jeff describes in detail some routines to practice doing that push off sufficiently. And the third technique involves your core muscles. The answer to your putting woes may be the grip of your club! Yup, the flat part may not be best  laying at a 90 degree angle from your putter face. Your arms hand differently from person to person. If You Think – You Stink! Golf isn’t hard to play. It is hard to be good at, but not hard to play. In fact it is so very simple. Hit a ball with a stick, go get the ball, hit it again and again until you get it in the hole. You know why it seems to be so hard? Because we THINK it should be hard and we THINK too much and make it hard. You want to play golf? Here’s all you need to do. Find someone to teach you how to grip the club; how to position the ball; where to put your feet; how to swing the club; how to make center face contact between the club and the ball every time. That’s it! Those are the things you should think about and you should only think about them prior to swinging. When you have all those elements together, simply swing the club without thinking about it and watch how wonderful a shot you can hit. Those Weekend Golf Guys are always up for doing some good for their neighborhood. Back on Father’s day, a local group in Louisville called the 3AGA (African American Amateur Golf Association) held a Father’s day special event at one of Louisville’s outstanding City Owned Golf Courses, Shawnee Golf Course. The idea of the event was, in conjunction with The First Tee of Louisville, was to introduce neighborhood kids to the game of golf. They promoted it as a “Father Figure Day” celebration. Fathers, Uncles, Granddads and even next door neighbors; all father figures in the lives of these kids, brought the kids to the course to introduce them to the fun of the game.
