Curious about the role of a switch in kink & BDSM? Some say switches are really just confused doms or subs that haven't figured out their true identity yet. Others believe they're less skilled and aren't as dedicated to exclusively topping or bottoming. In this episode, Queen Anas Blue busts these myths and gets deep into the switchy nitty-gritty. Some of the topics we cover:

Switching styles & traits

Switch erasure

Switch drop

Challenges cis men face embracing their switchy side

Overcoming switch imposter syndrome & more

We're excited to introduce you to another show on the Pleasure Podcasts network called, Erotic Short Stories. (Yes, the audio is NSFW so choose your listening time & place accordingly!)

If you're a fan of erotica and looking for a place to indulge in your wildest fantasies, then you need to listen to Erotic Short Stories.

Each week, Mia will tell you a sensual story in a silky-smooth voice that will surely get you in the mood. Check out more Erotic Short Stories wherever you get your podcasts.

Sex-positive psychotherapist, Kate Loree joins us to talk about managing mental health within polyamory and consensual non-monogamy -- specifically how mood and personality disorders like anxiety, depression, BPD, NPD, etc., can impact these relationships. According to NAMI one in five American adults experienced mental illness in 2020. When we combine this with consensual non-monogamy (CNM), things can become even more complex. As Kate points out, CNM tends to poke at unresolved attachment injuries more than is typical in monogamous relationships plus polyamory involves more people which means there's more to navigate. While this conversation is geared toward non-monogamous relationships, the strategies Kate discusses can be adapted to various relationship styles, including kink dynamics and monogamous relationships.

Kate Loree, LMFT, is a sex-positive licensed marriage and family therapist with a specialty in non-monogamous, kink, LGBTQ, and sex worker communities. She is also the author of Open Deeply: A Guide to Building Conscious, Compassionate Open Relationships.

In addition to her master's in marriage and family therapy, she also has an MBA and is a registered art therapist (ATR). As a culture, we've come a long way in our understanding of consent. It's discussed in schools, on TV shows, and in popular media. But through this mainstreaming of consent, we've also lost some important nuance along the way.

This conversation with Kitty Stryker is all about that nuance. From the complexities of consent within various power dynamics to the ways it shows up in every relationship, consent situations seem to be everywhere. Kitty lays down frameworks to help us reevaluate our personal relationships with consent and use what we learn to strengthen our bonds with friends, family, co-workers, romantic partners, and more.

Kitty Stryker Bio

Kitty Stryker is the author of "Ask Yourself: The Consent Culture Workbook" and the editor of "Ask: Building Consent Culture", both from Thornapple Press. She was among the first to coin the term "consent culture", writing in 2010 about the radical act of defining what you want to move towards instead of just what to avoid. A queer nerd, an asexual sex worker, an anarchist journalist; Kitty is often found blurring the edges of communities to forge coalitions and welcome more people in. She aspires to be Baba Yaga when she grows up.

How do you live your authentic kink life when your needs don't match up with the BDSM community status quo? In part 1 (ep 203) Mollena Williams-Haas told us how returning to the leather community after parting ways sparked an unexpected journey of healing and growth. In this discussion, Mollena shares practical advice for digging past the stereotypical BDSM "supposed to's" in order to identify your needs and honor them. D/s relationships are about making life better for both doms and subs -- but how exactly do we go about that? Mollena has some helpful answers …

Mollena is a writer, actress, BDSM Educator, Storyteller, sobriety fiend since March 2007, and Award-Winning Executive Pervert. Owned & collared by renowned contemporary composer Georg Friedrich Haas, she serves as his beloved slave, submissive, wife, servant, and Muse. February 2016 saw a groundbreaking piece about their relationship featured in the New York Times. They are also both the subject of the documentary The Artist and The Pervert.

As a two-time leather title holder and kink educator, Mollena's viewpoints on Kink-related issues are frequently sought after by sources like The New York Times, Newsweek, Essence, Ebony, etc. A frequent guest expert on Dan Savage's "Savage Lovecast," Tristan Taormino's "Sex Out Loud", and Margaret Cho's "Monsters of Talk" podcast, she's even spoken about Kink at Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. Mollena is also the co-author of the "Toybag Guide: Taboo Play" and "Playing Well With Others: Your Guide to Discovering, Exploring and Navigating the Kink, Leather and BDSM Communities".

A professional stage performer since age 5, Mollena's credits include The Wiz and co-starring with Danny Bonaduce in underground cult-classic America's Deadliest Home Video. Her short film, IMPACT, won "Cinekink's Best Experimental Film." Mollena's latest performance piece and movie is Hyena, a collaboration with her husband. Dr. Candice Nicole Hargons joins us for a conversation about the ways racial inequity hurts the sex lives of BIPOC folks. Although many view sex as an escape from the stresses of real-world issues and a common experience we all share -- it's not that simple. Orgasms are not the great equalizer. Political, cultural, and systemic societal forces have everything to do with the ways we experience pleasure. Some of what we unpack in this episode:

Guest Bio – Dr. Candice Nicole Hargons

Dr. Candice Nicole Hargons is an award-winning associate professor of counseling psychology at the University of Kentucky, where she studies sexual wellness and liberation. She is the host of F*ck the System: A Sexual Liberation Podcast and How to Love a Human, a liberation podcast that asks people with multiple marginalized identities what the world would be like if it loved them. Veronika Kestrel joins us for a conversation about creating safe & inclusive kink spaces for everyone across the gender spectrum. Despite the BDSM subculture's roots in the queer community & emphasis on inclusivity, many communities remain steeped in heteronormativity, leading to the fetishization and othering of gender non-conforming and trans people. Some of what we touch on:

Guest Bio – Veronika Kestrel

Veronika Kestrel (She/Her) is a Professional Dominatrix and kink lifestyle educator affiliated with the Los Angeles Sanctuary. A 15-year veteran of the kink lifestyle, she began her kink journey in the Denver community and relocated to Southern California in 2018, where she helped facilitate trans-focused events in the Orange County scene. Since then, she has conducted clinics for the LA Sanctuary, CancerPhase Productions, and at numerous private venues. She was a panelist at DomCon 2022, and has appeared on "Your Kinky Friends", "Pink Kink Podcast", and, of course, "American Sex Podcast"! She prides herself in her efforts to make Kink a friendlier, more ethical, and inclusive community in any way she can. Adult grooming is often misunderstood -- from what it looks like, to who is most vulnerable, what types of people groom, and why -- most assume it can't happen to them. The fact is, grooming comes in many forms and can happen in any type of relationship - including BDSM dynamics. And because kink often involves power imbalances, it can be especially difficult to recognize in this context.

Whether you're new to kink or a seasoned veteran, episode 199 of American Sex will give you the tools to spot unhealthy power dynamics in BDSM and deconstruct preconceived notions of what manipulative abuse looks like, who can do it, and why. You'll also learn:

Midori joins us to discuss Japanese BDSM & why recognizing fundamental differences in various cultures around the world is the key to understanding the how & why behind kink.

We talk about differences in consent & safety, how differing social norms & hierarchies influence our collective play styles, and how these insights can enhance our own relationships.

Most of us aren't great at recognizing our way isn't the only way. But even if you plan on never venturing outside your local BDSM community, a global perspective can broaden your understanding of the psychology behind what we all do, no matter where we do it.

Guest Bio – Midori

"Your Fairy God-Auntie of Kink. Exploding Expectations. Challenging Conventions."

Trailblazing educator, sexologist, artist, and irritant to banality, Midori founded Rope Dojo and ForteFemme: Women's Dominance Intensive. She penned the first English instruction book on Shibari, "Seductive Art of Japanese Bondage" in 2001, paving the way for the popularity of rope. Dan Savage calls her the "Super Nova of Kink," while others affectionately call her Auntie Midori for her cool, tell-it-like-it-is, funny, reality-based teaching. She is also the author of "Wild Side Sex," "Master Han's Daughter," and "Silk Threads."

Fact: The BDSM world has a race problem. Queer, Black, kink educator, Phrygian Monk joins us to talk about it. This conversation stemmed from one of their no-nuance November observations: "Kinktok is heavily segregated and pretty racist – like 1950s level." They bring all the nuance and then some. We discuss why it's essential for everyone to consider how different forms of play relate to POC kinksters, why we should take a pause before condemning all forms of race play, why many kinksters of color never feel fully safe playing with white folks, what those in the community can do to foster genuine inclusivity and be actively anti-racist, and more.

Guest Bio – Phrygian Monk

Phrygian Monk (They/Them) is a BDSM presenter and educator who is bringing diversity and a new outlook to kink education. With a 5-plus year background engaging in the kink and leather communities, Monk has decided to take the education that they have received, and pass that on to their fellow peers. With classes in subjects such as vetting, negotiation, and various forms of play, Monk hopes to connect with fellow younger kinksters and provide a space for peer learning and education. Also an activist in the kinky world, Monk uses their experiences and knowledge as a black queer individual to share about and fight for a more inclusive and safer community for all people. Having hosted and participated in various talks, discussion groups, and panels on the subject of race, racism, and how they impact the kink community, Monk hopes to see change, growth, and diversity flourish in local communities and individuals as they introspect, grow, and become active participants in fighting for a community that is for everyone.

Asexuality and kink?! Isn't that a contradiction?! Nope! Asexual BDSM is quite common. In fact, a significant segment of the kink subculture is on the 'ace' spectrum. On ep 195, Evie Lupine joins to talk about it. A few of the things we discuss:

Are there asexual folks in your community or life that you'd like to understand better? Maybe you've considered this identity for yourself? Does it blow your mind that many ace identified people practice kink & enjoy sex? We cover a lot in this episode that will help you answer those questions!

Evie Lupine Bio

Evie Lupine is an asexual kink educator and YouTuber that first began her journey into the lifestyle about 7 years ago. In that time, she's been a 24/7 collared submissive, a petplayer, a bondage freak, and an occasional sadist. Her passion for learning as well as her diverse interests within kink naturally led her in the direction of helping others with their own discovery processes. She focuses on supporting folks developing happier, healthier relationships while separating the fantasy from the reality of doing BDSM everyday.

Safe words aren't as deep & complicated as we make them out to be. They aren't necessarily as simple as we think either. In kink & sex, safe words are simple communication tools that stop the action & trigger a predetermined protocol. What they mean, how they're used & what you do after is up to you. How do you decide that? Episode 193 of American Sex Podcast will help you figure it out.

This convo was inspired by a listener suggestion to unpack some of the fiercest kink community debates about consent, how BDSM *should* be done, and the customizability of kink. Sunny Megatron explores ways you can evaluate BDSM rules and decide if, when, and how much to customize them to fit your own needs. She does this entirely through the lens of safe words and consent. This is also the first show back from summer hiatus and in the intro, Sunny announces some big changes for the future of both American Sex and their family.

"The BDSM Test" is infamous in the kink community and beyond. Since 2014, thousands have proudly posted results like a badge of honor on FetLife profiles. We use it as a roadmap, educational tool, and kink negotiation starter. It's even gone vanilla as the focus of social media challenges and pop magazine writeups.

But is this kink subculture phenomenon all it's cracked up to be? While some find it helpful & validating, many say it's othering, stigmatizing, and normalizes red-flag behavior disguised as "kink."

Midori & kinky therapist Joe Zarate-Sanderlin join us on ep 192 to deconstruct the BDSM test question by question + explore its wider impact. Why don't we scrutinize it the same way vet other educational sources? Who wrote this kink test, why, and what are they using the massive amount of data they're collecting about our deviant desires for? Turns out, it's a bit of a mystery…

Midori Bio

Being a part of community isn't required to practice BDSM, although it may seem like it due to visibility. What is important is knowing the positive and negative ways community influences the kink subculture. Yes, mainstream myths and stereotypes contribute to BDSM stigma, however, misleading info from the community causes harm too. On ep 188 of American Sex, Sunny Megatron & Kate Loree discuss this plus give advice on verifying the validity of educational info, sniffing out gatekeeping and "one twue wayisms," doing effective gut checks in consent situations, and more. Sunny also discusses the far-reaching implications of overturning Roe vs. Wade & how the Earn It Act ties in.

The kink community has a reputation for being accepting & inclusive. When it comes to race, however, we have some work to do. Recent research published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior found at BDSM events people of color were 16x more likely to feel discriminated against & 17x more likely to feel fetishized than their white counterparts.

On ep 186 of American Sex podcast, Luna Matatas discusses insight she's gleaned from the monthly Race & Kink discussion series she co-hosts with Marla Renee Stewart. What actionable steps can allies and accomplices take to tackle these issues head-on? How can we truly make our communities & events welcoming beyond saying "all are welcome"? What are we doing right? How are we missing the mark?

Guest Bio – Luna Matatas

Luna Matatas is a Sex and Pleasure Educator with over 15 years of experience teaching sex and empowerment workshops. She celebrates body confidence, self-adoration, and building shame-free pleasure in and out of the bedroom. She teaches a wide range of topics; including threesomes, BDSM, and sexual confidence. U.S. law interprets consensual kink activities as harmful, criminal acts. This makes prosecuting sexual assault cases within the context of BDSM difficult. How can you prove non-consensual sex occurred if kink isn't considered sex in the eyes of the law, it's assault? The National Coalition for Sexual Freedom/NCSF worked along with the American Law Institute to establish a legal definition of consent in kink. They just unveiled the New Model Penal Code on Sexual Assault: Affirmative Defense of Explicit Prior Permission for use of force and restraint with sexual contact.

On ep 185 of American Sex Podcast, the NCSF's Susan Wright & BebeBlueEyes explain how this gives legal power to sexual assault survivors, how it'll be adopted state-by-state, about the new consent model EPP/Explicit Prior Permission & why implementing it as community standard is integral to changing case law, what you can do to help, how the NCSF can assist you with criminal sexual assault cases involving consensual kink, and more. If you're kinky this is a MUST LISTEN--you need to know how the legal definition of consent is changing.

Guest Bio – Susan Wright, M.A

Susan Wright, M.A., (she/her) founded the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom in 1997, and currently serves as Executive Director. In addition, she serves on the advocacy and community advisory committees for AASECT, the APA's Division 44: Task Force on Consensual Non-monogamy, Kink Clinician Guidelines, and the Diverse Sexualities Research Education Institute. She chaired the successful DSM-5 Revision Project which helped result in the consensual paraphilias being separated from the APA's Paraphilic Disorders in 2013. She currently chairs the Consent Counts Committee that worked with the American Law Institute on the new Model Penal Code on Sexual Assault to create Section 213:10: Affirmative Defense of Explicit Prior Permission for use of force and restraint with sexual contact. Her research for NCSF focuses on discrimination and violence against alt-sex practitioners; consent practices and attitudes; and the mental and physical health of alt-sex practitioners, with papers published in journals including the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, Psychology & Sexuality, Journal of Trauma and Dissociation, Journal of Interpersonal Violence, Archives of Sexual Behavior, Journal of Sexual Medicine, Journal of Behavioral Health Services & Research, Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology, International Journal of Social Psychiatry, and Journal of Homosexuality.

On episode 184 of American Sex Podcast, Sunny Megatron & sex-positive therapist, Kate Loree, look at BDSM through an atypical lens. We chat about the misconceptions we worked through as people who stumbled upon kink later in life and how that perspective is helpful now in our careers. We discuss the headspace & strategy needed to tap into the customizable nature of BDSM, plus dive into the science & psychology behind kinky play--why do masochists like suffering? What happens to the body & mind during the altered states of consciousness subspace & topspace? How do people use kink to be more grounded, regulate the nervous system, explore intense emotional states with minimal risk, and more? There's a lot more to BDSM than ropes, paddles, and floggers!

What does the Joe Rogan/Spotify controversy have to do with the freaky things you do in the bedroom?

Surprisingly, A LOT!

This situation uncovered bigger issues regarding corporate control of information & influence over censorship. In 2022 posting about sexual health, LGBTQIA+ activism, or thirst traps online is risky due to SESTA FOSTA, bank restrictions, and impending legislation like Earn It. Discussions about structural inequity and/or content made by marginalized creators is suppressed by biased algorithms.

Indie podcasts & audio apps are among the last least censored mediums and a central hub for these kinds of discussions. How could one corporation's aggressive ambition to dominate audio entertainment threaten that & more? How did Spotify become the largest podcast platform & what's next? This episode is a wild ride taking you from Joe Rogansville all the way to your sexual freedom.

Want to be a sex or kink educator? Or become a better one? Maybe you're a student wondering how to better vet the instructors you learn from? Stefanos and Shay join us for ep 171 of American Sex Podcast to talk about pleasure education. During the pandemic, the mainstreaming of virtual classes caused demand for kink and sex ed to skyrocket. The number of brand new "educators" teaching ethically questionable and dangerous techniques has exploded too. We discuss what you can do as a student or instructor to help combat lack of diversity and quality education in kink & sex ed, the ethics of teaching in a sexually charged setting, dos and don'ts for presenters, tips for attendees on mastering challenging material, red and green flags students can look for when vetting educators or online educational content creators, and more. Stefanos and Shay literally wrote the book on this subject – Creating Captivating Classes: A Guide for Kink, Sexuality, and Relationship Presenters, which includes input from more than a dozen well-known educators.

Why are dark, disgusting fantasies that are in direct opposition to our moral beliefs some of our biggest turn-ons? How can what's 'so wrong' be 'so RIGHT'? Mollena Lee Williams-Haas tells us what's behind this on episode 170 of American Sex Podcast. If your porn search history is twisted, you're not alone. Taboo kinks are quite normal. We touch on: why the BDSM community can surprisingly be the most judgmental, how to handle it when people yuck your yum, the right and wrong reasons to explore taboo, how some examine oppressive systems like sexism and racism through taboo play, and why the WHY and intention behind it all is the key to everything. Mollena also breaks down a fear many of us wrestle with--will thinking about extreme fantasies push us to act out dangerous things or lead to the erosion of our personal ethics in real life? How can we determine if others will eventually cross that line? Even though the subject matter is dark, this conversation is lighthearted and hilarious too. Laugh your way to "strange boner town" with us!

On Ep 154 of American Sex Podcast, trans activist & content creator Rosalynne Montoya tells us about her journey of self-discovery. Seeing real LGBTQ+ people sharing their lives on YouTube was a lifeline for Rose coming of age as the child of a pastor in a conservative town. When she started sharing her own transition journey online, she became a role model for so many people with no transgender and queer representation in their lives. When her social media popularity skyrocketed in so did transphobic hate. Targeted by a small group of bigots, Rose was harassed and attacked relentlessly on TikTok. Fighting this intolerance, Rose gave visibility to a huge flaw on social media—a system that allows marginalized voices to be silenced at the hands of intolerant bullies. What she uncovered is mind-blowing.
