Artists, skaters, graffiti writers, poets & musicians inhabited the city, organically creating style & culture in a way that permeated into the life of the neighborhood. Common streets became legendary as the 14 block radius of downtown New York housed a thriving underground scene flourishing in a carefree time of unhindered creativity. At this time Alain Levitt was hanging out in the Lower East Side on a daily basis with a small film camera on his person. Spending the early 2000s living amongst the people, Alain shot the downtown New York Scene during an era that laid the foundations for events & people that went on to deeply influence the world of skate, graffiti, art & culture. His debut book 'NYC: 2000-2005' is a collection of these photos.

GKAE SKREW MSK is an internationally acclaimed graffiti writer whose name is synonymous with the title of ‘king’ from New York to Los Angeles. Getting down in MSK during the summer of 1992 when the crew was still an offshoot of AWR, GKAE approached graffiti with relentless will-power matched by few. As one of the early Americans to relocate to Asia, OPTIMIST lived in Taiwan bombing the city for 3 years during a time period when the country had no scene & the public was unaware of graffiti. TRAV MSK is a writer & artist who came up rooted within graffiti & shoplifting. Racking for a living from 7th grade till the age of 25, TRAV explains this as a life of high-highs and low-lows; culminating at age 25 when he sat in Fresno County jail for 6 months, facing 3 years due to priors. The reflection period in jail led to a life-transition, leaning into TRAV’s creativity as a new way of making a living within fine art. His work often reflects the narrative of the brick & mortar store being pushed out by technology. His interest in brick & mortar stores & technology stems from the fact that stores were where he made his money as a booster, while the internet allowed the shoplifting to evolve through various online platforms. Steve ESPO Powers is an artist from Philadelphia who wrote graffiti under the name ESPO. With a distinctive approach to bombing, ESPO would paint high traffic areas in daylight under the ruse of legality, making it appear that what he was doing was legal. Painting gates with a brush, he would write ESPO in large legible letters; telling authorities he represented ESPO "Exterior Surface Painting Outreach" organization. Steve Powers stopped writing in 1999 and began the path of a full time artist. He is a mixed media artist who has shown prowess in printmaking, installation art, murals, sign painting and more. His work has been shown in places ranging from Deitch Projects to the Brooklyn Museum. His work can also been seen at ESPO's Art World, an art studio/gallery located in Brooklyn, New York founded by Steve Powers.

RIME MSK is a graffiti writer & artist from Brooklyn who gained international esteem for his graffiti & art. Representing the great MSK Crew, RIME grew up around people losing themselves to addiction & through the use of psychedelics was able to get past the hindrances present from the cynicism that comes with a broken spirit. SP One is a graffiti writer raised in Queens who has been active since 1981; an era when graffiti was prominent on New York’s subway system and the Vandal Squad’s aim was to uphold the Clean Car Program of 1984. SP began Skills Magazine, featuring the likes of Mobb Deep, DUEL, Black Moon, DESA, amongst others. The magazine was an extension of SP’s interest in collage. SP’s fine art practice developed throughout years of drawing, cut-and-paste projects and painting which led to his eventual life long career and practice of making art. R.B. Umali is a videographer who documented a golden era of New York Skateboarding during the late 90’s, filming the likes of Peter Bici, the late great Harold Hunter, Javier Nunez, amongst others. Matty Matheson is a Canadian chef who grew up immersed in the hardcore scene of the late 90’s / early 2000’s. He would frequent shows in Canada as well the Buffalo, Syracuse and Albany hardcore scenes. He opened his first restaurant at 26 and has since opened over 10 restaurants. At 29 he had a heart attack after some years of substance abuse which began when he was very young. He is nearly 10 years sober now and working on several projects including Rosa Rugosa, a clothing line producing quality garments out of Canada. He speaks on hardcore music, chef culture and drugs, becoming sober, finding peace amongst a busy lifestyle, his family’s work ethic and more.

Stack Aly is a legend within our scene, having deep roots within skateboarding, graffiti, design and music. Originally from Brooklyn, Stack Aly came up writing graffiti with the BYI crew, going to hardcore punk shows and skating. Bear Quitugua is the founder of Shoyoroll, a martial arts lifestyle brand specializing in fight wear for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu; heavily influenced by reggae culture, skating, surfing and Bear's roots in Guam. Chito Vera is a UFC fighter hailing from Ecuador who has dedicated his life to martial arts and family with a never-say-die attitude that is a hallmark of where he comes from. Coming from Ecuador fighting in the streets before UFC, Chito would begin his MMA career in the back of a mechanic shop with only a year of Jiu-Jitsu experience. His drive to fight would lead him to calling promotions to fight for free for exposure which was hard to come by. Through his consistency and work ethic, today Chito made it to his long awaited goal post of UFC fighter. He is currently working on a title shot. He fights this Saturday August 13th.

KR, Craig Costello is the creator of KRINK. KR's roots are planted deep in graffiti culture, having spent time painting in New York & San Francisco. KRINK's origins involved KR racking all of the supplies which allowed for ability to experiment with different inks and materials. He would hand make all of the markers and inks in small batches by his bathroom window and learn photoshop at Alife to make the marker labels. To this day, KRINK is still handmade in small batches. Christian Acker is the author of Flip the Script. He started the Handselecta project back in 2003, documenting handstyles for over 10 years from graffiti writers like Mike Giant, CHINO,  AGUA, ESPO and STAY HIGH 149. Between 2003 and 2013 he assembled over 100 interviews and alphabets by American writers of different cities, spanning from the 1960s to the 2010s. His book, Flip The Scripthelps contextualize American graffiti through those interviews and writing samples placed in a historic context. It was the first to present material like this in a clean, structured layout. It has been out of print and hotly pursued for the last 5 years and it has just been rereleased.
